May 18 Hydrant Flushing week of May 18th - Flush-
ing water hydrants can cause rusty water. This can be an issue
if doing laundry during a flushing period. If you experience rust
in your water let the cold water run for about 5 minutes and it will
clear up. Rusty water during flushing is unavoidable. Malta is
required to flush hydrants by the IEPA 3 times per year. Water
remains safe for consumption during the flushing period.

Animal Ordinance Malta has a leash law that requires animals to be leashed and not allowed to
run at large. Animals picked up are usually held at the Malta Veterinary Hospital 815-825-2077
or contact Animal Control at 815-748-2427. Note: fees are charged for kenneling once your
animal is picked up, avoid problems by following the leash law. Malta Zoning Code allows 3
Animals of the same species if you have more than 3 you are in violation of Malta Zoning Code.
Animals are not allowed to disturb the peace day or night. Animals must be brought in if they
are barking causing a nuisance.
Burning is allowed in the village provided you are burning only yard waste or untreated lumber in a container. Burning is
a luxury not a right if you are causing a nuisance by burning the fire must be put out. Burning is not allowed on streets or
in the public right-of-way, or public property without permission.
Garbage Collection as a reminder household refuse and yard waste will be collected between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. each
Wednesday. Separate trucks on separate schedules pick up refuse, recycling, and yard waste, so each of these may be picked up at
different times of the day. Contact Waste Management at 800-796-9696 for special pick up services of refuse. Contact the Village
Hall to start new service 815-825-2330.
Golf Carts are legal transportation in Malta but must be registered at the police department. Call the Police non-emergency num-
ber 815-825-2200 or 815-825-2330 ext. 4 for registration. You will need to make an appointment with an on duty officer. A fee of
$35.00 is charged for golf cart registration.
Malta Historical Society – Besides housing area artifacts the Historical building is also a great location for private parties. The
building seats approximately 75 persons comfortably and is air conditioned with a full kitchen. Rental is $70.00 for the entire day
plus a deposit. Visit the village website http://www.villageofmalta.net/maltahistorcialsociety.htm or for a rental brochure stop by
the Village Hall .
Mosquito Control is contracted with Clarke Environmental. Spraying takes place in evening hours along with
catch basin treatment. Treatment is based on catch traps and schedules around holidays and special events. If
you would like to be notified of spraying please contact Clarke Environmental at 1-800-942-2555.
Projects Completed: It may have been a 100 years in the making but citizens of the village through hard work
and determination made it happen! The southern west portion of the village is now draining west through a
storm line that is connected to the Harkness Lake at Prairie Springs Subdivision. Which means less standing wa-
ter in the village during rain events and less mosquito breeding grounds. The Harkness Lake Park now officially
belongs to the Village of Malta and although watercrafts have not been addressed as of yet the lake and park
property are available to all Malta residents for enjoyment of the walking path and fishing. A fishing license is
required. Another completed project this spring is replacement of the north drainage tile between the north
retention pond and the outlet at Schaffer Road. This tile had not been functioning at full capacity for many
years. With replacement of the tile we have better flow and better storm water management capabilities. These projects were
paid for by Tax Increment Financing Funds and State of Illinois Grant Funds. Just to note the north water retention project is still
in the works, this project did not qualify for TIF Funds or an Illinois Grant but is being done by volunteer citizens. Since the area is a
construction site public use is not allowed. We are in hope of finishing the project this year which will create another village park
area.
Heads up! From the Property Maintenance Inspectors:
Property Maintenance Inspectors will be out doing inspections throughout the village. Our number
one goal is to keep our curb appeal! In these economic times it is very important that properties are
maintained. Pride in the way we keep our property reflects on our village, our property values, salabil-
ity of our property, and the people who live in this village. As a village we do our best to keep village
properties clean and well maintained. We ask that residents do the same. Currently Malta is 12% vacant which means a lot of
people are looking at properties for sale. Malta is a great little village and we want to entice home sales and welcome new people
to the village.
What is Property Maintenance? It is an adopted International Property Code that sets standards of conduct for property mainte-
nance some examples:
A. Weeds and Grass cannot be over 12” - in this case homeowner is notified when grass/weeds are 10” that the Village will be
mowing the property and placing a tax lien on their property until payment is made for the service. Usually about $70.00.
Fines are also accessed for repeat offenders.
B. Rubbish, Garbage & Storage—sets a standard that all rubbish and garbage must be placed in designated containers.
C. Outside Storage— eliminates using the great outdoors as a storage unit. It is a violation of Malta Zoning Code to use residen-
tial property as an outdoor storage yard. If you are one with excess outside storage items please take care of the situation.
This is just a sampling of the Property Maintenance code the entire code is available on the Village website.
Emergency Service Siren test is the first Tuesday of each month at 10 a.m. In an emergency the siren is activated by the
National Weather Service or local authorities who have spotted an actual tornado. Out Door Warning Si-
rens -Why are they called outdoor warning sirens? The sirens are called outdoor warning sirens because
their primary purpose is to alert people who are outside to severe weather. The system is not designed to
provide notification inside of your home or business. The location, design and performance of the siren sys-
tem is intended to provide a warning to people who are outdoors to take cover. What should I do if I hear
an outdoor warning siren? If you hear an outdoor warning siren you should seek shelter inside immediately.
Once inside, you should turn on a television or radio to learn further information. Local officials will be disseminating information
about the emergency through these outlets. What can I do to be notified of an impending tornado inside my home or business?
Every home or business should be equipped with a NOAA Weather Radio. In the event of a watch or warning, most NOAA Weath-
er Radios sound an alarm and turn on automatically. When they are not dispensing watch and warning information, these valua-
ble tools will provide you with detailed forecast information. Many NOAA Weather Radios are equipped with digital S.A.M.E.
(Specific Area Message Encoding) technology. This allows the radio to be programmed to receive automatic warnings specific to
DeKalb County. For weather safety visit www.noaa.gov
Did you know?
You can set up an account on-line to pay you utility bill or just to review your utility account. By setting up an account you can
view your bill or reprint a bill anytime.
Residents can use Lions Park and Gazebo for events free of charge. The Shelter House has refrigerators and running water. Stop
in the village for the specifics or to reserve.
If you are 55 years old or older you qualify for the Senior Garbage Rate. Give us a call to update your account.
That if you are a landowner and rent your property you need to call us if a tenant moves prior to the end of the billing quarter so
we can get a water reading. Unfortunately we cannot split a bill without a reading.
Did you know the Village of Malta has not asked for a tax increase or raised water/wastewater rates in excess of 10 years. This is
unheard of in these economic times. As a village we strive to make the most out of every dollar.
You can volunteer to help work Malta Days ticket booth or being on a clean up crew for a couple hours by seeing Carrie at the
Malta Post Office she has the sign up sheets.
