Welcome to the May issue of Village View magazine. Thank you to all of you who sent such lovely comments last month about our front cover, a watercolour of Ham Farm painted by local artist Ben Cook. This month we feature the beautiful Bluebell, now in full bloom in our fantastic Chiltern woodlands.

Thank you also to those of you who responded to our request for more local, seasonal photos, we have stored these in our photo bank and hope to use some of them during the coming months in the magazine or on our website (www.chiltern-directories.co.uk).

Here at Village View we are all looking forward to a busy summer of local and national events. We are very pleased to be able to support local celebrations and our village fetes in particular. We offer free space for the promotion of these in the magazine and, if you would like to advertise your business alongside them, why not give us a call on 07712816336 or send an e.mail to [email protected].

We hope you all have a lovely summer.

RecipeAsparagus frittata

Serves 4-6Prep time 10 minutesCooking time 20 minutes

Ingredients275g new potatoes450g asparagus5 large eggs200g buffalo mozzarella50g Parmesan, grated2 tbsp chopped flat leaf parsley2 tbsp olive oilSea salt and freshly ground black pepper

Preheat the oven to 200°C/gas mark 6. Making sure the potatoes are clean first, boil them in salted water. MethodTrim the asparagus, then cut the stems into 1cm slices leaving the spear as a piece about 8cm long. Add this all to the potato pan for the last 5 minutes of the cooking time.

Drain everything and refresh in cold water. Thickly slice the potato.

Whisk together the eggs really well. Dice the mozzarella and add to the eggs along with 40g of the Parmesan, the parsley, potatoes and slices of asparagus. Season generously with sea salt and freshly ground pepper. Stir everything to coat with the egg. Lastly, gently stir through the spears.

Heat a 22cm diameter oven-proof deep frying pan along with the olive oil over a medium heat. Non-stick would be great, otherwise one which is naturally seasoned.

Pour in the egg mixture making sure some of the spears are sitting at the top. Leave to cook for around 10 minutes until the edges are starting to firm up.

Sprinkle over the last 10g of Parmesan and slide the frying pan in to the oven. Bake for 8-10 minutes until the frittata is golden and firm.

Serve straight from the pan with a crisp green salad.

Osteopa+hy

Does back pain slow you down more often than you’d like to admit? Do sore joints

and muscles catch up with you by the end of the day? Many people think aches and pains are inevitable signs of ageing. What would you say if we told you this wasn’t necessarily true?

Our bodies respond wonderfully to gentle treatment. Osteopathy is a practical, hands-on solution to injuries and everyday complaints that focuses on fixing our bodies for the long-term. If you ever suffer with a sore or painful neck, back or hips, Osteopathy could provide you with a solution in just a few treatments. And it’s not just the treatment which is fast. Getting to see your local osteopath can be a rapid path to pain- free living. No more waiting-lists or red-tape referrals. Just genuine, practical, swift assistance which will save you time and money.

Wayne Twitchen, qualified local osteopath, offers treatment with the aim of getting people back on their

feet. “My services are practical and my advice is genuine,” he says. “I want to see patients pain-free and healthy as soon as possible, even though that typically means they only come to see me for two or three treatments - sometimes less! Every treatment is given with the aim of dramatically improving pain levels and their underlying cause.”

Unlike some other methods of treatment, osteopathy is so effective that patients typically see dramatic improvements in a matter of weeks. “Osteopathy patients never end up coming back time and time again for months and years on end,” says Wayne, “unless they want to!” Some of Wayne’s patients choose to see him regularly for ongoing maintenance, warding off aches, pains and injuries.

Using soft tissue work, massage, gentle manipulations, mobilisation, stretching and rehabilitative exercises, Wayne Twitchen works to get you healthy again, so you can work and play without pain.

The National Camp Corporation purchased land at Horsleys Green in

September 1939. On the 24 acre site they built six dormitories, an assembly hall, a dining hall, a small hospital and staff quarters.

London County Council took over from the NCC in November 1939, when about 200 “physically defective” evacuee children were transferred from temporary billets in Lowestoft. Most of the children, whose ages ranged from 15 – 16 years, were originally from Hackney, Hoxton, Lambeth, Barking and Tottenham. Whilst at Horsleys Green they followed an elementary school curriculum and enjoyed varied social activities. On one occasion a dance was organised by Captain Rose for which the admission charge was “an article of clothing”, which brought in nearly 200 parcels.

The Butler Education Act of 1944 gave local authorities the power to establish boarding

schools wherever these camp schools were situated. Lancashire Education Committee purchased the camp in 1947 and sent boys for a few months at a time to Horsley’s Green. The LEC ran the school until the early 1970’s when it was put up for sale. Interested parties were the government, who planned an open remand centre for young offenders, and The Wycliffe Bible Translators. A meeting was held at the Memorial Hall, Stokenchurch where a Home Office official outlined the government’s proposals. He expressed surprise at the number of local residents who attended the meeting and the depth of local feelings towards the proposed Borstal and that the area was more built up than originally thought. The other party, The Wycliffe, eventually purchased the site in November 1971. Today The Wycliffe Centre is the UK Headquarters of Wycliffe Bible Translators.

On Your PlotCourgettes - sow, grow and harvest

If you’ve lost seedlings or had trouble getting them started with all the cold weather don’t forget that you

can always buy plants that have already been started. Buying young plants in is a great way to experiment with different varieties too - with so many types of tomato available it’s more fun to have several plants, each of different kinds, than half a dozen all the same.

May is the time to start off that wonderfully easy vegetable - the courgette. If you’ve never grown courgettes before then I can highly recommend it as they give such a high yield from even just a couple of plants. In fact that would be my main advice - don’t be tempted to grow too many or you’ll be inundated! Plant the seeds undercover or on a windowsill from the beginning of the month. Put two seeds to a pot, laying them on their sides and covering with about 2cm of compost. They usually germinate in a week to ten days and grow pretty rapidly. Remove the weaker of the seedlings (I always feel guilty when I do this! If it looks good I re-pot it). When the seedlings have four to six leaves start to harden off by placing outside during the day. Plant out after all risk of frost has passed. You can also start courgettes outside, directly into the bed in which they’ll grow but I’d wait until later in the month when the soil is a bit warmer. The plants will grow quickly, producing exotic looking yellow flowers (look out for recipes for the flowers too). For maximum yields the plants should be harvested regularly. Tiny courgettes are very tasty, and don’t be tempted to turn your back on the plants for too long as they grow large at an amazing rate! Be careful with watering when seedlings as the stems can rot, but they’ll need plenty of water once they have grown. If you’re short of space courgettes can be grown in grow bags, planting two to a bag.

With summer in mind, don’t forget to keep planting your salad crops. As well as the traditional lettuce there are a host of other salad

leaves that can be grown, and it’s usually possible to buy packets of mixed salad seeds. Get in the habit of planting some at least once a fortnight - use some of the leaves to cut and come again for tasty fresh salad, transplanting some lettuces outside and allowing them to grow on to full size.

Fancy your own, home grown, Brussels sprouts with Christmas dinner? They need quite a long growing time, so think about starting them around now.

There are not many vegetables that are as rewarding, and easy to grow, as courgettes. Now is a great time to get them started, they’ll pop up quickly and soon be supplying you with more tasty courgettes than you know what to do with!

Jobs for May:-Keep on earthing up your potatoes to prevent the tubers from turning green.

If you’re planted peas don’t forget that they’ll need some support from sticks or netting that they can climb up.

As the risk of frost passes, tender crops such as tomatoes or peppers can either be planted out, or on into grow bags.

Start winter greens such as cabbages, sprouting broccoli and Brussels sprouts in a seedbed for transplanting to their final positions later.

Book ReviewDarling Books for May

It’s time to crown the new May Queen and dance around the

Maypole. Heavily rooted in the pagan and the celtic, celebrations are taking place across the land. This magical time of year is all about nature, fertility, tradition and folklore. Make yourself a daisy crown, sprinkle on some fairy dust and dance barefoot in the moonlight. Or failing that, find a patch of sunlight and let a book lead you on a merry dance…

A Midsummer Night’s Dream, William ShakespeareMischief abounds in one of Shakespeare’s best-loved plays which has three main, interwoven plotlines. The story centres around the marriage of Theseus, The Duke of Athens, and the Amazon queen, Hippolyta and is set in woodland as well as the magical realm of ‘Fairyland’. One of the most memorable characters is undoubtedly the fairy court jester ‘Puck’ who dispenses his magical juice which, when sprinkled on your eyelids, means you fall in love with the next thing you see. This is one dream from which you won’t want to wake.Lob, Linda Newbery

The original inspiration for Newbery’s ‘Lob’ was a stranger she saw on her way to work; ‘the man who walks the roads’. Where was he going and where had he come from? This image, combined with those of the ‘green man’ in English Folklore who appears in carvings as a face amongst leaves and branches, lead to her to create her garden helper ‘Lob’. Lucy ‘s grandfather tells her about Lob and all the ‘Lob-work’ he does around the garden. You can only see him if you believe in him. It’s a beautiful and heart-warming children’s book which has great appeal for adults.

Arthur, High King of Britain, Michael Morpurgo. This is the second children’s book we’ve selected but it’s a wonderful way for kids and grown-ups alike to hear some of the magical stories of King Arthur and his mystical round table. Michael Morpurgo’s tale begins with a boy, marooned on a sandbank with the sea lapping perilously close to him. He wakes up in a strange bed and finds he has a visitor: King Arthur himself. The legendary figure then recounts tales of Camelot, sorcery, knights on mighty steeds and betrayal. Prepare to be transported back in time.

The Most Amazing Places of Folklore and Legend in Britain: Where to Discover Our Living Heritage and Traditions, Readers Digest. If you’ve ever thought that Britain is lacking in tradition and folklore in comparison with our European neighbours, think again! This is a travel guide that will take you deep into the heart of the countryside and the legends that abound. From the solstice celebrations at Stone Henge to the yeti-like Beast of Bolam in the wilds of Northumberland, this is a land that’s teeming with folklore. Use this modern guidebook to take a step back in time and into a land that you may not recognise.

The Heart of Robin Hood, David Farr. This is a brilliant reworking of the classic tale of the outlaw and his band of merry men. This time though, Robinand his men have grasped the idea of stealing from the rich, but have not yet signed-up to the principle of then giving it to the poor. It isn’t going down well with the poverty-stricken around Nottingham Forest. In David Farr’s adaptation, it’s Maid Marion who has to blaze the trail and convince Robin to follow his heart and not hold onto his swag, for the sake of the country.

A Queen By Any Other Name

There won’t be many republicans in evidence in London this summer. Even non-royalists will be caught up

in the pageantry of Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations; an event guaranteed, even more so than the Olympics, to lift the nation’s spirits at a time of general despondency. As part of the celebrations The Queen has granted city status to four UK towns: Perth in Scotland; St Asaph in Wales; Chelmsford in England and Armagh in Northern Ireland.

There was another time in history when the country’s collective spirits needed lifting – sixty years ago. Residential streets were closed to traffic so that local communities could hold street parties. Bunting and Union flags hung from lines strung from upstairs windows on either side of the streets. Makeshift tables sagged under the weight of sandwiches, jelly and custard and bottles of Tizer.

Games were organized, one of which consisted of the father of a family threading a needle and cotton which he then handed to his impatiently waiting offspring who would sprint down the road to the mother. The mother would sew a button onto a square of material which the offspring would then rush to the referee. Not all the families could participate in this game; some of the fathers had not returned home eight years previously.

In the evening we sat round our wireless sets to listen to our new Queen’s speech: “…Throughout all my life I shall strive to be worthy of your trust…”

In this speech the Queen also paid tribute to the support of her husband, the Duke of Edinburgh, and the speech is as valid and as relevant today as it was sixty years ago.

Times changed. Britain changed; in some cases beyond recognition. But there has been one constant: a tower of strength whose influence will not be fully appreciated until she is no longer with us.

In a much earlier speech, made in Cape Town on her twenty-first birthday, 21 April 1947, the then Princess Elizabeth declared “… my whole life whether it be long or short shall be devoted to your service…” Well, we all know now that it was to be long. We also know that she meant every word she said.

How differently history would have read had her would-be assassin, Marcus Sarjeant, succeeded in acquiring a real gun and live ammunition. The mentally disturbed teenager fired six blank shots at the Queen as she rode in the Trooping the Colour ceremony on 13 June 1981. He was quickly overpowered by Police Sergeant John

Woodcock and St John Ambulance man John Heaseman. He told them “I wanted to be famous. I wanted to be a somebody.” And he had written a diary entry: ‘I am going to stun and mystify the world. I will become the most famous teenager in the world.’

Fortunate not to have been shot on the spot he escaped with five years imprisonment. But most notable was Elizabeth II’s majestic reaction to the incident. As her horse, nineteen-year-old Burmese, panicked and reared she calmly brought him under control and continued with the scheduled ride to Horseguards Parade, comforting him with a few pats on the neck while turning to smile at the cheering crowd.

This was, allegedly, the second attempt on the Monarch’s life. According to a retired senior police officer in Australia he was in charge of an investigation in 1981 after a train carrying the Queen and Prince Philip collided with a large log which had been placed on the track after police and a pilot train had passed along the route. The retired officer, Mr McHardy, who claims to have interviewed suspects including IRA sympathisers says the Australian government issued a suppression order to avoid embarrassment. There has so far been no comment from Buckingham Palace on the validity of these claims.

True or false I doubt that the Queen loses much sleep over these stories. She has, over the past eight decades, proved herself indomitable.

It was the Queen’s consort, HRH Prince Philip, who pointed out that sometimes a position is more important than the person who occupies that position. With typical clarity he had put the concept in a nutshell: if a nation chooses to have a figurehead then there must be a human to give that position substance, but the human is secondary to the position, not vice versa. For the past sixty years we have been fortunate in having a person worthy of that position; a person of supreme dignity and dedication the like of which this country may never see again. God Save the Queen.
