Local History Group

The History Group met January 19th 2012 and 26 members were in attendance to hear Mr Peter Butler give a fascinating talk about Thomas Saulsbury Wright, whose tombstone on Norfolk Island in the South Pacific claimed he was from North Frodingham and had died aged 105 years! His exploits as a counterfeiter, confidence trickster and generally ‘bad egg’ had us all enthralled. Thomas Wright was sentenced to execution at York Crown Court in the eighteenth century; the sentence was commuted to transportation to Australia, for life. He served his sentence as a baker and was eventually released. Then he began a career in bank note forgery, earning the nickname Tommy the Banker before being finally deported to the penal colony on Norfolk Island, where he served his last few years. Sadly we cannot lay claim to Thomas, it would appear that he originated from the Holderness Frodingham, I think we all wished we could add this colourful rogue to our list of past residents. The next meeting of the History Group will be held in the Village Hall, 7.30pm March 15th, when Tim Ollett will be talking about his research into the Lost Church of St Faiths, Leven. New members will be made most welcome; you do not need to have lived in the Parish for ever.

North Frodingham Primary School 01262 488227 Dear All, Here we are half-way through the school year already, with the signs of spring edging their way through. As always school is busy, with lots of exciting events soon to happen. Our Key Stage 1 infants really enjoyed their visit to ‘Build a Bear’ in Hull and came back proudly with their very own class bear. The bear will be spending weekends with children from Class 1 and may even visit Driffield Show this year. During this term, pupils have already been exploring ‘Number and Pattern’, a theme that will continue for Key Stage 2 with David Mell, an artist in residence. Our younger children will be learning about endangered animals and a ‘zoo’ will be visiting the school later this half-term. The Animal Boogie Down in the jungle in the mid-day heat What can you see without any feet? With a slither, slither here And a slither, slither there. What’s that creature without any feet? IT’S A SNAKE! He goes slither, slither, boogie, woogie, oogie! slither, slither, boogie, woogie, oogie! slither, slither, boogie, woogie, oogie! That’s the creature without any feet. (Class 2 – an excerpt from their patterned book)

Community We need your help. As you know, we are working hard with the PTFA to build up play opportunities for our pupils on the school site. Unfortunately equipment is being damaged on a weekend and during the school holidays by young people, some using skateboards. Please let us know if you see anyone on site when school is not open. The damage will be reported to the police and we will be requesting extra visits from the PCSO.

Climbing or Mountaineering Do you know anyone who is a climber and would be willing to come into school

to talk to Class 2? They are learning about the mountain environment this half term. Forthcoming Events Saturday 17th March PTFA Ceilidh at the Social Centre Wednesday 28th March Egg Rolling and

Easter Bonnet Parade At the school 2.30 pm

Thank you for your continued support of the school. Best wishes for a Happy Easter. Mrs J Moat (Headteacher)

Parish Council

Overall a quiet period for your Parish Council; the Parish Council has met twice since the last Village Voice, on both occasions the Agenda was fairly light. The lack of Planning Applications is particularly apparent.

Of note has been the upsurge in bad behaviour by youngsters in the village, although hopefully not of the village. We have had incidences of disruption affecting the Drum Club and of brown sauce being smeared around the school. Sadly this childish nuisance comes just as the Parish Council extends congratulations to Mrs

Hannah Walker and her team for securing the funds to refurbish the playground at the Village Hall.

The Parish Council has continued to report street lighting failure and deterioration of the verges and highways throughout the Parish, and has achieved some success in getting the problems solved. The area in front of the Cemetery gates is to be repaired by YEB and the slight subsidence of the pipe trench along Grange Road is under careful scrutiny by the ERYC engineer.

North Frodingham Village Playground Contact: Hannah Walker, 49 Main Street, 481799 WE DID IT! We have received notification from Groundworks Community Spaces that we have been awarded a grant for £49935 to install the new playground at the Social Centre. We have also now raised sufficient funds for the new fencing with the help of Lissett Wind Farm Fund, North Frodingham Parish Council, Five Happy Helpers Lifestyle Group and fundraising events. Thank you all for your kind donations and to everyone who has supported the events. The project can now get underway and should be up and running for the children to use this summer! We really could not have got this far without the help of a few village members; sincere thanks. Sarah Mitchell, Irene Benson, Ragan Evans, Jo Fletcher and Elaine Stephenson have all worked extremely hard organising and running the fundraising events. This is more appreciated than they will ever know. Also, thank you to those of you who have helped out at the various events: Ann Cherry very kindly donated her time and expertise so that we could hold two very successful wreath making events which helped us to raise a considerable chunk of the money in a very enjoyable way. Roy and Gemma Edwardson produced a very

thorough (and successful) planning application. A professional service that we would never have been able to afford, and which is greatly appreciated. Things will now start to move quite quickly and work is scheduled to start during the week commencing 26th March. Obviously there will be a lot of equipment and machinery on the site and although it will all be securely fenced we would ask that you make it clear to your children that it will be a dangerous place whilst the work is being carried out and that they should stay away until the playground is finished, especially in the evenings when the workmen have left for the day. Also, in order for the new fence to be installed the existing fence will, at some point, have to be removed, we just ask that you bear with us during all the upheaval! The new fence is being installed by us, dates to be confirmed, and we need help! If you would like to get involved and help with this huge job you would be very welcome, just get in touch and we'll let you know when it's happening. We will keep you informed of what's happening, but in the meantime, watch this space!

From Pippa GRAVIL Special Inspector Recruitment & Marketing Driffield PS Police Report I have been informed by a member of the Parish Council that he had been approached at his farm by a male driving a white small tanker type vehicle advising he would take any waste oil away free of charge. It appears there have been other incidents around our area with this gentleman offering to take away waste oil. Should anyone else be approached by this individual, no waste oil should be handed over to him and he should be sent on his way and the matter reported to the Police (using the non emergency number 101) The vehicle registration number of the tanker is Y183 BOA Another matter has come to my notice, which may/may not arise in the North Frodingham/Brandesburton areas - a large quantity of Snap On tools has been seized by Police at an auction room in Selby, North Yorkshire. These were seized due to numerous reports of the items being high value and are unusual to be sold at auctions. The seller was traced to Driffield. If anyone is approached by persons selling Snap On Tools, please can they contact Humberside Police on telephone number 101 accordingly to report the details which will enable us to update our colleagues in North Yorkshire.

Young Peoples section from Sophie Love is a very important and powerful emotion. As time passes we go through different love from different people, our heart breaking and being restored again. However there are two loves that shouldn’t be lost: our faith in God and love within our family. When you have quarrels be brave and talk. Therein lies the way to contentment and happiness. I’d like to thank everyone who has donated to the Malawi Project - £50 so far. Next – a sponsored silence… eeeek!!! To all school students, please vdo not stand in the road especially at the first stop into Frodingham on the corner at the bottom of Grange Road, someone will get hurt. If you have anything to say, or have a short story, poem etc write to Sophie Watson, Mount Pleasant Farm, Cross roads, NF, YO25 8LP. Have fun writing and have your thoughts published in Village Voice. **************************************

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH, NORTH FRODINGHAM.

Our dates for the meetings in 2012 are as follows: ALL DATES ARE ON A MONDAY. IN THE SOCIAL CENTRE AT 7pm March 19th ,June 18th ,September 17th ,December 17th Please note these are corrections to the dates previously issued in V V Please come along to have your say. Several scams are currently being perpetrated, eg Car jacking where you return to your car in a car park, start up to drive off & then find a piece of paper stuck to the rear windscreen. You are tempted to jump out to remove it, to find that someone has jumped into your car and driven off, possibly with your handbag, wallet etc. They now have your car, house keys, credit cards …

Do you have the correct ‘Buildings sum insured’ on your home Insurance policy? Some policies don’t cover Wedding (or Christmas Presents) left on show in the house, It’s easy to confuse the replacement cost of your property with the market value. The rebuilding cost is not the same as how much you could sell your home for, because the selling price takes into consideration the location of the house and the land it is built upon. Your buildings insurance policy should cover the full cost of rebuilding your home if it were totally destroyed. This includes any outbuildings plus any additional charges which could be incurred in rebuilding, such as demolition costs, architects and surveyors fees and complying with the requirements of local authorities. The value of the land under your home isn’t a factor in the REPLACEMENT part of the policy ALSO, what is classed as ‘contents’ and what’ as buildings’? Imagine turning your house upside down. Now shake it. Everything that falls out is contents and everything that doesn’t is buildings! Buildings covers the home and its permanent fixtures and fittings, which also includes swimming pools, paths, drives, terraces, walls, hedges, gates and fences all contained with the boundaries of the Land. Contents are your household goods or personal property contained in the home or within the boundaries your property; curtains, clothing, furniture, tools and jewellery for example.

SPORT etc Summer is in sight and therefore the cricket season isn’t far away. North Frodingham Cricket Club had a very successful season in 2011 reaching the finals of the divisional cup in the Bridlington evening league only to lose to a strong Sewerby side, containing several first team players, at Dukes Park Bridlington. It was encouraging to see several young players from the village progressing well through the ranks. This season will start in April 2012 and local players and volunteers are always welcome.

We will seek to publish in future editions, fixtures and results so that you are encouraged to participate or at least support your local team.

North Frodingham Playing Fields continues to provide some of the best playing surfaces in the area largely due to the immense efforts of the volunteer groundsman Paul Butler supported by Paul Wylie who did an excellent job in preparing the cricket wickets last term.

AND FINALLY Very many thanks for your support, particularly Joy Harris & Peter Bernard. As a trial run we have increased the size to 16 pages in an attempt to avoid everything seeming to be too cramped. Also, we have tried to catch up with some items that have been outstanding from the beginning. This is an indication that you are actively feeding material in for inclusion. But please remember that we need your continuing inputs for future editions. before 30th April for our next issue, We will generally aim to publish as a 12 page newssheet. Also we are conscious that an occasional error has crept in – sorry. Hope you had a good start to 2012, that winter is behind us and that Spring and summer is kind.
