a Saturday whist evening every fortnight for around 20 elderly residents of sheltered housing in Pershore – duties include
organising refreshments, purchasing small prizes, collecting subs, and arranging lifts. This event will sadly close if no-one can be found to run it. Can you help please? Planning this year‘s holidays? Do something different in 2011! Canal camp volunteers Canal Camps are designed to restore the derelict canals of England and Wales, giving volunteers the chance to help the environment whilst having a fun holiday. There are 22 canal camps - some of the tasks include restoring a length of the Montgomery Canal in Shropshire, the continuing excavation, restoration and rebuilding of Elsey Lock on the Cotswold canals, and constructing a slipway on the River Avon in Warwickshire. Volunteers need no previous experience - just willingness to be involved and a good sense of fun! They can learn new skills and be part of a team that makes a huge difference to the waterways. Residential Holiday Helpers Around 1 in 4 families are affected by disability in some way, and the chance of a break, either for respite or refreshment, is really important. Residential centres in Southampton, Chigwell, Southport and Cornwall provide facilities for disabled people and carers, and help disabled guests enjoy their much-needed break. Training and support will be given at the Centre and relevant expenses paid.

Review of the Year Part 2- July to December 2010
July continued as June ended, with hot sunny weather, but by mid-month the weather had broken and thereafter periods of showers and rain interspersed with occasional warm sunny days became the norm till the end of the summer. Blackbirds and robins were feeding second broods, and a party of 10 lesser whitethroats was seen near Egdon. 25 swift over White Ladies Aston was a good record.12 species of butterfly were recorded in the Millennium Wood including common blue and brown argus. Painted ladies continued to be scarce with only singletons seen during the month. A peregrine was noted late month over Stoulton. Large groups of swifts were then seen moving south on the 30th pointing to a major exodus back to their wintering grounds. August An early oak green bush cricket was seen on the 1st and a grass snake at Windmill Hill. A very late beautiful demoiselle was noted on the 6th by the Hawbrook, and a nuthatch was heard briefly in Stoulton (a scarce bird in the village) a coal tit, also a scarce bird, was seen in St Edmunds churchyard. Finally at the month‘s end a willow warbler was heard in the Millennium Wood on its way back south. September started mainly cloudy but, during spells of sunshine brimstones and holly blues were on the wing, these early autumn sightings are normally associated with second hatchings from spring breeders. A hobby was seen on the 4th and regular sightings then continued to the months end, although sadly no young were seen this year. Small numbers of swallows and meadow pipits were moving south from mid month onwards, and a wheatear was in a stubble field at Stoulton on the 16th; there were fewer red admirals on the wing this autumn. On the 17th a tree pipit (3rd parish record) flew over the Millennium Wood, and a garden warbler was seen by the Hawbrook. By the end of the month yellowhammer numbers in the wheat stubbles around Stoulton had increased to over 30 birds and a female merlin overflew Stoulton on the 26th(2nd Parish record).The first hint of winter was the sighting of a redwing on the 28th.October started warm and the nuthatch first noted in Stoulton in July, was joined by a second bird, they then continued to be seen and heard in gardens and on feeders to the end of the year. After heavy rain on the 3rd the flood relief channel at Claverdon saw a record 35 mallard! More redwings were seen on the 4th, together with the first returning siskin. Hornets were regularly seen, particularly in the Millennium Wood. By the 20th the first lesser redpolls were in evidence and a flock of 20 golden plover briefly took up residence close to Stoulton.The first fieldfares

were quite late arrivals on the 21st. Unprecedented hard frosts on the 24th and the 25th (-3˚C) were an early warning of what was to follow! There was a brief respite in early November a flock of 500+ wood pigeon were around Stoulton, 400 + fieldfare in and around Egdon and 120 starling, with a party of15 greenfinch were seen feeding in the yews in Stoulton churchyard. A remarkable 55 stock doves were in the winter wheat fields east of Stoulton village on the 15th .The onset of foggy, then wet weather led to the start of the great freeze on the 24th .From this point on the weather deteriorated rapidly. Sightings of birds away from feeders and gardens were few in number and mainly confined to siskin, redpolls and groups of winter thrushes. A hard frost (-10˚C) occurred on the 27th and ponds and lakes rapidly froze, coinciding with this a common snipe was seen regularly on the Hawbrook. Despite the weather a mistle thrush was defiantly in song on the 28th! On the 30th an inch of snow settled and a male sparrowhawk terrorised birds around feeders in Stoulton. December started with snow flurries, but no one could have predicted the snow and severe frosts to come. Birds became increasingly frantic to find food, particularly blackbirds and fieldfares, who were grateful for windfall apples in the orchards at Wolverton and in gardens. A reed bunting was seen briefly at Claverdon sewage works on the 6th. The waxwing invasion finally reached our parishes with a single bird on hawthorns in the Millennium Wood on the 10th , 9 were seen briefly in Norton and over 30 birds seen in Station Road, Pershore.19 goosander were seen flying south over Claverdon, (the first parish record), on the 11th. The lapwing flock on Wadborough Road built up to 120 by the 16th, accompanied by over 300 starling and 20 golden plover. These birds rapidly dispersed as snow started falling on the 17th, with temperatures below zero all day. The 18th brought the worst snow in living memory to the area, with an accumulation of 10 inches by the end of the day, garden feeders were inundated with birds with a male brambling being an unusual visitor to our garden, many other birds took the hint and started to leave with parties of skylark, thrushes, lapwing and wood pigeons seen passing over during the brief midday lull. Another merlin, a male this time, was seen harassing a large flock of over 40 skylark between Mucknell Farm and Egdon and Wolverton. Temperatures plummeted to -18˚C on the 19th and -16˚C on the 20th ,when a further 4 inches of snow fell. The Severn was frozen over in the City down to Diglis, and the Hawbrook could be walked over without using the foot bridges! Remarkably, during this intense cold spell a goldcrest, our smallest bird, was heard in Stoulton churchyard. Icicles the size of spears, became a feature, as did buzzards who were reduced to hunting in gardens as the severe weather

continued; generally bird numbers were much reduced. Up to 6 inches of snow again fell on the 22nd; however what was surprising was that moles were working throughout the cold spell throwing up new hills even on the coldest days, you have to respect their resilience. A mealy redpoll was seen briefly on the 26th in the Millennium Wood, and an unusual sighting were the two great black backed gulls a predominantly coastal species, heading south west over Claverdon.
Finally the thaw set in on the 27th which came as a great relief, almost immediately birds returned to fields and wood edges and feeders whilst still busy returned to normal levels. So, a third cold December and this by far the worst, many climate commentators predict this will become the norm, however predicting weather, and natures response to it are thankfully not yet an exact science.

THE DBSO AT NEW YEAR
This year, we sang carols on 4th January in the village hall, instead of the snowed-off, planned event that was to be held on 20th December. We had a wonderful time. We were amazed at the numbers of people who turned up to join in with the spirit of the evening – still within the 12 days of Christmas - and we have £135.30 to pass on to Acorns – making it even more worthwhile that the event was rescheduled. And we had everything: dancers, solo performers, samba drumming, reggae carols and, of course, our resident orchestra.
Thanks to everyone from musicians to wine mullers to audience.

in an excellent evening‘s entertainment, raising £900 plus for Pirton Church funds.

Hanna who took part in the first part of the show, the village committee and their
helpers who worked throughout the freezing conditions to ensure everything was

MAPS Over the past few months, various people have lent me maps of the area to look at and compare with the modern day landscape. I am always fascinated by what we can learn about a place from maps; I find it interesting to note how some of the place names change. For example: ‘Bridge Furze Farm’ becomes Breach Farm; ‘Muckenhill Farm’ becomes ‘Mucknell Farm’, and if we look for the Berkeley Arms on an 1828 map, we see it marked as ‘Egdon Hall’., meaning, presumably that it did not become an inn and till after that time. The village of Drakes Broughton was mentioned in the Domesday Book in 1086, as Broctune. Although the Drake connection goes right back to the 13th century, when the hamlet was given to Robert Drake of Brocton by Constance de Lega, it is marked only as ‘Broughton’ on the 1828 map of the area, and is not marked as ‘Drakes Broughton’ until the 1899 map. As well as old maps, Google Earth is a useful source of information, with its aerial photographs. I wonder how many people are aware of the historical button on the toolbar? For some places, it is possible to see aerial photographs right back to 1945. Unfortunately, the quality is such that, when you try to zoom in on a place, it loses clarity, but from a distance, it is possible to see, in Drakes Broughton for instance, the large wood that used to lie behind Stonebow Road and Walcot Lane, before the estate was built. Some roads change, too. On the 1828 map the road from Drakes Broughton to Stoulton goes via Hawbridge – the way the bus goes now, and the road is still like this if you study the 1945 aerial photograph. However on the 1828 map there is an additional road leading out from Hawbridge to join up with the Wadborough Road, making a crossroads and continuing on to Abbot‘s Wood. The 1828 map shows no railways, but they are clearly on the 1899 map, so I had to research further to discover that they weren‘t constructed until 1852 (M.R.) and 1853 (G.W.R.). Council. County Councillor Adams offered to speak to landowner in the first instance. The Clerk advised that repairs necessary to street lighting would need to be claimed via the Parish Council Insurance. (Community) Following a request from Wychavon District Council for nominations for Wychavon Bursary 2010/2011 it was proposed by Cllr. R. Reynolds, seconded by Cllr. R. Griffith and agreed for the Clerk to nominate Mrs. Janet Taylor for the award. Cllr. R. Durrant updated members regarding BT Race to Infinity. He advised that current percentage of votes was 21.60% (249 out of 1153), a discussion ensued and Cllr. Durrant advised that the Peopleton exchange needed at least 1000 votes in order to be eligible. It was unclear as to whether Peopleton, Stoulton and Claverton leaflets had been distributed yet. Cllr. Durrant confirmed closing date for votes was 31st December 2010. The Chairman gave a report regarding information received concerning the Adoption of Private Sewers by Water Authorities 2011. It was proposed by Cllr. R. Griffith, seconded by Cllr. J. Rhodes to circulate a letter and information, previously distributed to members, in the New Year to all householders throughout Drakes Broughton to gather information regarding the location of pipe work. A discussion ensued and County Councillor Adams offered advice. INFORMATION AND DATE OF NEXT MEETING The next Parish Council Meeting will be held at 7.30pm on Thursday, 6th January 2011 in Drakes Broughton Village Hall.

MEETING HELD THURSDAY 2ND DECEMBER 2010 REPRESENTATIVES‘ REPORTS County Councillor R. Adams gave his report particularly regarding the changes to Management at Worcester County Council, concessionary travel and the B4084 Speed Limit Review. County Councillor Adams went on to answer members questions. Cllr. M Gardner enquired if an upper age limit for Councillors existed. A discussion ensued and it was concluded that no such age limit existed. Cllr. R. Godfrey report debris at the side of the highway following a road traffic accident. It was agreed for the Clerk to report this to Highways Department. Cllr. R. Durrant enquired as to E-on activity throughout Drakes Broughton recently. It was agreed that the Clerk would enquire as to the purpose of the activity. CORRESPONDENCE (Highways) The Clerk reported that emails had been received from David Lavender detailing remedial and replacement works carried out in Stonebow Road to broken pipe work, Mr Hemmings following Worcester County Councils decision not to pursue a Restriction of Access to the B4084 lay-by and a resident requesting marker posts at Wadborough. Mr Lavenders email was noted and the Clerk advised that she had forwarded emails regarding Restriction of Access and marker posts to the Highways Department. The Clerk reported that following the approval by the Parish Council to Mr. David Lavender of Worcestershire County Council acquiring the £5000 Flood Alleviation Grant award by Wychavon District Council to use on behalf of the Parish Council in facilitating necessary flood alleviation works required at Shrubbery Road and Beech Avenue, Mr. Tony Ford of Wychavon District Council had advised that he had no objection in principle but required further details of proposals from Mr. Lavender. County Councillor Adams agreed to investigate and provide an update at the next meeting. The Clerk reported damage to headwall and streetlight at Stonebow Road. She advised that initial remedial works carried out by the landowner were unsatisfactory and that Land Drainage had suggested a letter from the Parish

THE TALE OF THE DOG ( PART 9 ) Our Dog is now feeling ok about walking to heel when required ─ it realises that this is not it's walk, that is something much more exciting, so it doesn't mind walking slowly beside the human. The exciting bit doesn't always have to be out in the countryside (although this is the Dog's favourite ), it can be a park or open space + a game with a ball. The Dog needs to do wees and pooes at some point during the day. This usually tends to happen after exercise. The human is well aware of when the Dog needs to go, and makes sure that this is not going to happen when the Dog is heeling in a built up area. TIP 8 Always carry ‗poo bags‘ at all times and clear up after the dog ─never get caught out! ─ Parks always have bins and if out in fields or woods, move it into a hedge out of the way of other walkers and children. Turn the empty bag inside out, fold it up small and put it in a clean freezer bag kept for the purpose and put it in a pocket for later disposal ─ no problem! There is nothing worse than having to clean up a child that has trodden or even fallen in dog muck, or cleaning it off the wheels of a pram !! As my grandson said ─ ―People should take on board their turdial responsibilities‖ !!!!! Some humans, through no fault of their own, cannot give their dogs the exercise they need. They may have hit hard times and have to work long hours and have no time to walk the dog, or they may have suffered ill health or have become elderly. They love their animals and are well aware of the distress this causes. There are organisations that can help. If elderly, the CINNAMMON TRUST has volunteers for walking, foster carers who will take an animal while the owner is in hospital or ill, or will find a loving home if the owner dies. (I will supply info in next Villager) There is the NATIONAL REGISTER FOR SITTERS AND WALKERS 08703 500 543. Perhaps a neighbour with a dog, would be willing to include an extra one on their walks.----there is always a solution somewhere. The problem that seems to be the most difficult to solve in the Dogs life is the owner who couldn't care less.

Under 12s: We have 2 sides at this level playing in Division 1 and
Division 2 respectively of the Evesham Football League. Both sides
have competed well and have enjoyed a mixed bunch of results.
Under 14s: The Under 14s compete in the Mercian Football League
and play their football on a Sunday . The team is sitting proudly at the
top of Division 1 having won seven out of seven league games. The
most recent win being a 5 – 1 victory over Newtown Sports of
Malvern. An excellent win against very strong opposition and
previous league winners. Congratulations to the whole team.
Under 15s: Our eldest side are riding high in the league which has
been very competitive this season. The lads have also reached the
cup semi final after defeating Littleton 4 – 0. Well done to all
concerned.

An update of our 7 sides as follows:
Under 8s: Our youngest side are enjoying an excellent season. In
the Evesham Football League, Under 8s fixtures are all classified as
Friendlies and no league table is maintained.
However, judging by the lads‘ performances so far this season, they
should be very competitive in the Under 9s league next season.
Under 10s: The team is made up of U9s as well as U10s and the
boys are having a difficult season in a very strong league. However,
they continue to do their best and some promising football is
emerging. Well done to everyone for battling so hard despite the
results not going their way. Also thanks to Jason and Steve for their
continued encouragement. As an extra note, the Under 10s are
looking for a permanent goalkeeper. Are you interested?
Under 11s: The side play in Division 1 of the Evesham Football
League. Despite being a very strong league the team have suffered
just two defeats in eight league games! The boys have also
progressed to the cup semi final after victories over Badsey and
Inkberrow! Well done!
