Since 2002 we have been pla-ying in Europe and this undou-

btedly reflects the progress the club has made in recent years. Having enjoyed the premiere of Europa League two seasons ago, the team caught on a spectacular campaign in the same competition last year, reaching the semifinals and being eliminated by the tour-nament champion.

Despite being a small town of just 50,000 inhabitants, our rapid rise has already seen us reach the semi-finals of the UEFA cup, the semi and quarter finals

of the Champions League and, three seasons ago we finished as runners-up in the most powerful league in the world, breaking the ‘two-horse race’ normally enjoyed by Real Madrid and Barcelona. Endeavour, hard work and humili-ty, with which we seek to continue to grow, are now bearing fruit and for this reason we do not wish to limit our ambitions.

The success has been achieved as a result of the collaboration of everyone: players, staff, coaches, director and fans. I want to thank all those people who have always

accompanied us. This season we will be competing again in a continental competition and we hope to maintain the high level of performance that we achieved in previous years. Our ambitions are to reach the top, but always on a basis of hard work and humility. Our unfinished business is to win a title, but we should never let our desire to do this become an ob-session. As always we hope that Yellow fans will join us on our jour-ney. We must continue on these lines. We are on the right road.

Desde el año 2002 que estamos disputando competiciones eu-

ropeas y eso refleja, sin duda, el gran progreso que encaminado el Villarreal CF en los últimos años. Después de haber disfrutado del estreno de la Europa League hace dos temporadas, el equipo cuajó una espectacular campaña en la misma competición el pasado año, llegando hasta las semifina-les y siendo eliminado por el que finalmente terminaría siendo cam-peón del torneo.

En nuestro rápido crecimiento, a pesar de ser una localidad de 50.000 habitantes, hemos al-

canzado ya las semifinales de la Copa de la UEFA, las semifinales y los cuartos de final en la Liga de Campeones y, hace tres tem-poradas, fuimos incluso subcam-peones de una de las ligas más poderosas del mundo, cortando con el ‘bipartidismo’ en España de Real Madrid y Barcelona. El esfuerzo, el trabajo de cada día y la humildad con la que buscamos seguir creciendo están dando sus frutos y, por ello, no queremos li-mitar nuestras metas.

Este éxito se corona por la colabo-ración de todos: plantilla, cuerpo técnico, directiva y afición. Quie-

ro agradecer a toda la gente que nos acompañó siempre. Este año volvemos a disputar una compe-tición continental y esperamos poder estar a la altura, tal como venimos realizando los últimos años. Nuestras ambiciones se retroalimentan, queremos llegar a lo más alto, siempre a base de mucho trabajo y humildad. Nues-tra asignatura pendiente es poder conseguir un título, pero eso no debe obsesionarnos. Como siem-pre, esperamos que la afición amarilla nos acompañe en este proyecto. Hay que seguir en esta línea. Vamos por el buen camino.

El Villarreal da la posiblidad al equipo visitante de que pueda adquirir 200 entradas de ‘primera clase’ en un sitio privilegiado para poder seguir el fútbol, ubicado en la Tribuna Lateral Par, destinado a los aficionados VIP, patrocinadores y todo lo que así desee la entidad visitante.

Visiting Clubs are entitled to purchase up to 200 first class tickets (un-less otherwise agreed between the two Clubs in question) for their VIP supporters or sponsors, being on a privilege zone at the Main Stand.

El Villarreal dispone de una zona en el estadio destinada exclusivamente para la afición visitante y con capacidad para 2.424 localidades (1.470 de buena visibilidad y 954 de visibilidad reducida. La grada es muy segura, ya que está totalmente aislada de la afición local y accesos exclusivos, siendo un sistema pionero en España.

El Madrigal es el campo de fút-bol donde el Villarreal disputa

los partidos como local. El feudo amarillo está situado en la Plaza Labrador y desde su inauguración en 1923 ha ocupado la misma lo-

calización. Paralelo al Mediterrá-neo, que está a cinco kilómetros, El Madrigal está a una altura de 50 metros de desnivel respecto del mar. El estadio, en la actua-lidad, tiene una capacidad para 24.890 espectadores, cuenta con una afluencia media de pú-blico de 18.000 aficionados y las dimensiones del terreno de juego son de 105 x 68m.

SU INAUGURACIÓN

Nuestro campo se inauguró el 17 de junio de 1923 con el nombre de Campo del Villarreal, aunque sólo dos años después comenzó a llamarse El Madrigal, para perdu-rar hasta nuestros días. El nombre hace referencia a los terrenos de la partida rural sobre los que se edificó la instalación deportiva,

INAUGURATION

The stadium was inaugurated on June 17, 1923 under the name

of “Campo del Villarreal” befo-re becoming known, as it still is today, as “El Madrigal” two years later. The name refers to the rural area on which the Sports area was built.

The ground was officially opened with a match between CD Cas-tellon and Cervantes, two teams from the province’s capital.

El campo se inauguró con la dis-puta de un partido entre el C.D. Castellón y el Cervantes, dos de los equipos de la capital de nues-tra provincia.

El Madrigal vivió su primera am-pliación durante el verano de 1952, aprovechando el fin de la competición. Aquella remodela-ción sirvió también para que el terreno de juego alcanzase las mismas medidas que el Estadio Olímpico de Helsinki, que ese mismo año acogía los Juegos, y que fue la referencia para los clu-bes. Así, el rectángulo de juego de nuestro campo pasó a tener 104

x 65m. y dejar atrás los 95x50m de antes.

En los años 60 el Villarreal cons-truyó una pequeña tribuna cu-bierta y en la temporada 71/72 se edificó la primitiva grada del gol sur. La tribuna comenzó a derri-barse el 19 de julio de 1988 para dar paso a la construcción de un nuevo graderío, que se inauguró el 8 de marzo de 1989 con un partido amistoso frente al Atlético de Madrid.

Desde el club aprovechamos la celebración de los 75 años de la entidad, para realizar la remo-delación más importante hasta la actualidad y que ha dejado El Madrigal hasta nuestros días. El

gol sur fue derruido el 22 de mayo del 98 y fue el inicio también de la construcción de la nueva tribuna cubierta, el anfiteatro, la grada de preferencia y el gol norte. Tras sufrir varias remodelaciones, el úl-timo ‘retoque’ hasta la fecha llegó hace dos temporadas con la cons-trucción de la zona visitante, justo encima del Gol Norte y que permi-tía a la afición rival ver el partido con toda tranquilidad. Con capa-cidad para 3.000 espectadores fue una remodelación ejemplar. El Madrigal dispone de todo el confort para aquellos aficionados que quieren un plus de servicios a la hora de seguir los partidos que el Villarreal disputa como local. The Madrigal underwent its first extension at the end of the sea-son in the summer of 1952. The pitch was remodelled to the same dimensions as that used in that year’s Olympic Games held in Hel-sinki which increased the playing area from the previous 95 x 50m to 104 x 65m.

In the 60s a small grandstand was built before the 71/72 season saw the first construction of the South End. On July 19, 1988 the gallery was demolished to make way for a new grandstand that was officially opened on March 8, 1989 with a friendly against Atletico Madrid.

The next major renovations came 75 years after the club’s original founding leaving the club much as it is today. On May 22, 1998 the old South End was demolished and work began on a new Tribu-ne section, the Preference seating stand and the North End. The la-test alterations came just two sea-sons ago with the construction of a visitors stand, located just above the North End that allows up to 3000 away supporters to watch the match in peaceful, safe su-rroundings. For home fans that want that something extra when supporting their team the club provide the Yellow Boxes and Blue Boxes where supporters can en-

joy climate control, closed circuit television with simultaneous trans-mission of the game and catering services, providing a luxurious experience for the fans.

FIRST FLOODLIGHTS

The first floodlight installation came in 1973 to permit games to be played in the late afternoon. The town council placed four pylons each with nine spotlights on each corner of the stadium. They were inaugurated on Sept-ember 17, 1973 with a Third Divi-sion match against SD Ibiza which culminated in 0-1 defeat for the home side.

Nuestro campo conoció en 1973 su primera instalación eléctrica para poder jugar los partidos de fútbol a última hora de la tarde. El Ayuntamiento de la ciudad colocó cuatro torres metálicas en cada

esquina del campo, con nueve focos halógenos cada una de ellas. Estrenamos la iluminación eléctrica el 16 de septiembre de 1973 con un partido de Tercera división que enfrentó al Villarreal con la Sociedad Deportiva Ibiza y que finalizó con 0-1 en el mar-cador.

LA UBICACIÓN DE LOS VESTUARIOS

Es curioso, pero hasta cuatro ubi-caciones diferentes han tenido los

vestuarios de nuestro campo des-de que se inauguró el feudo ama-rillo. Hasta la temporada 35/36, es decir, durante doce años, los ves-tuarios ocuparon la zona del án-gulo sureste del terreno de juego. Desde esa fecha y hasta los 60, se situaron en la parte nordeste del campo. Con la inauguración de la nueva tribuna en 1989, ocuparon la parte suroeste para acabar, con la última remodelación, en su ubi-cación actual, justo debajo de la zona central de tribuna.

THE LOCATION OF THE CHANGING ROOMS

There have been no fewer than four locations for the team’s chan-ging rooms since the stadium’s

opening in 1923. Unti l the 1935/36 season, the changing rooms were located on the south east corner of the pitch. From then until 1960 they were situated on the north east section before

being moved to the south west to coincide with the opening of the new grandstand in 1989, before finally moving to their present lo-cation under the tribune section of the stadium.

de El Madrigal, Así, la Ciudad Deportiva se compone de seis campos de césped artificial y tres de césped natural, además del edificio principal de la residencia y del bloque de oficinas. Así mien-

tras que el primero ejerce de base de operaciones de las jóvenes promesas y del primer equipo, el segundo alberga la parte admi-nistrativa y de gestión del club. Pocos clubes de fútbol de Europa pueden presumir de contar con una de las mejores ‘salas de má-quinas’ del Viejo Continente.

No en vano, la Ciudad Deportiva del Villarreal CF es una de las mejores que hoy en día se puede encontrar en cualquier punto y su frenética actividad diaria sirve de muestra del generoso esfuerzo que la entidad realiza en la ver-tiente deportiva y social.

Nuestra Ciudad Deportiva es uno de los complejos deportivos des-tinado al fútbol más importante de Europa. Con una extensión de 70.000 metros cuadrados y nue-ve campos de fútbol, es el lugar habitual de trabajo no sólo de nuestro primer equipo, sino tam-bién de todos los que componen las categorías inferiores del club.

La Ciudad Deportiva cuenta con tres campos de Fútbol-11 de césped natural, todos ellos ilumi-nados: en uno realiza a diario su entrenamiento el primer equipo, mientras que los otros dos los uti-liza el filial, uno para ejercitarse cada día y el otro para disputar sus encuentros.

Villarreal CF’s facilities go far beyond those enjoyed at the

Madrigal. The Sport’s City boasts six artificial turf pitches (two of which were changed this year),

and three natural grass playing surfaces in addition to the two buildings which houses the head-quarters and the offices of one of Europe’s finest ‘engine rooms’.

Not surprisingly the Sports City is one of the best example of its type in Europe and the frenetic activity that occurs on a daily basis is a constant reminder of the work, both sporting and social that goes on at the facility.

With an area of 70,000 square metres and nine football pitches, the Sports City is the place of work, not just for the first team, but also for all those who make up all ranks of the club.

The Sports City has three 11 a side floodlit pitches all laid with natural grass, one for first team training, with the other two being used by the reserves, one for tra-ining, the other for playing their matches.There are in addition two 11 a side pitches with artifi-cialsurfaces measuring 90 x 60 m and 100 x 65 m respectively both floodlit and both with the ability to convert into two seven a side pla-ying areas of 60 x 35 where grass root matches can be played both day and night.

THE RESIDENCE

The Sports City also has a social structure. On the first floor can

LA RESIDENCIA

La Ciudad Deportiva cuenta tam-bién con dos edificios, siendo el de más antigua construcción la

Residencia. En la primera planta de esta instalación se encuentran los vestuarios completos para su uso profesional, una zona desti-nada para los médicos del club, una sala de musculación, un gim-nasio, una sala de hidromasaje y varios despachos para el cuerpo técnico .

En la segunda planta está la cafe-tería con terraza exterior y vistas a los campos de fútbol, una cocina y una residencia –que también alcanza a la tercera planta- con capacidad para más de un cen-tenar de jóvenes futbolistas que

buscan en el Villarreal conseguir ser profesionales del fútbol. La residencia acoge a jóvenes entre 14 y 18 años de todos los puntos de España y también del mundo entero.

Estas jóvenes promesas cuentan con un educador especializado y cursan sus estudios en el instituto de enseñanza media Mircalcamp, que está junto a la Ciudad Depor-tiva. De esta forma, los cerca de cien jóvenes que hay en la resi-dencia del Villarreal CF dedican sus horas al fútbol y también a sus estudios.

ve facilities of the whole Madrigal complex. Classically and tastefully decorated with historical pictures of Villarreal and vintage lamps, the location offers superb comfort and excellent service for those interes-ted in hiring it for occasions such as christenings, first communions, business dinners, product tastings and all manner of business pre-sentations and celebrations.

MINI STADIUM CAPACITY IN-CREASED TO 5.000

The Mini Stadium is located in the Sports City. A stadium with a

capacity of 5,000, it is where Villa-rreal has played its home games since playing in Second Division B. After promotion to the second tier of Spanish football the mini stadium was renovated in the summer of 2009, with a view to

extending its capacity. A new North End was built and an ex-tra three rows of preference seats were added to accommodate more fans. The central tribune are was also altered slightly with padded seats for the improved

comfort of those Villarreal fans, who for just 75 euros extra on their season ticket could watch the second division A from a pri-vileged position.

También cabe destacar la existen-cia de la cafetería de El Madrigal, ‘El Gol’, ubicada en la esquina del estadio amarillo, siendo el lu-gar propicio para vivir en directo todos los partidos que el Villarreal juegue fuera de casa.

EL MINI ESTADI SE AMPLÍA HAS-TA LOS 5.000 ESPECTADORES

Allí, en la Ciudad Deportiva, es donde precisamente se encuen-tra el Mini Estadi. Un estadio con capacidad para 5.000 especta-dores en el que el Villarreal B ha disputado sus partidos como local desde su estreno en Segunda Di-visión. De hecho, para acoger los partidos de la categoría de plata

el Mini Estadi sufrió una remode-lación el pasado verano del 2009 con tal de ampliar su aforo. Así, se construyó el Fondo Norte por completo y además se añadieron tres filas más a la grada de Pre-ferencia con tal de satisfacer la demanda de los aficionados del Villarreal. Por si fuera poco, la zona de trbuna central también sufrió un pequeño cambio con la implantación de asientos acolcha-dos para mejorar la comodidad de los abonados del Submarino, que por tan solo 75 euros más en su carnet podían reservarse un lujar privilegiado para ver el es-pectáculo de Segunda División A.

Villarreal’s growth isn’t limited to the sporting area. In fact, the

Submarine has built a new office building, located next to the first team’s training pitch, that will hou-se the Yellow management and operations office. Everything has

its place in this large, modern and functional building, from Marke-ting, Protocol or Communications departments to the Technical area and Board offices. The building also houses a cafeteria, for the enjoyment of the Yellow fans, and

a travel agency. The residence building, where the offices and cafeteria were formerly located, is now dedicated entirely to the sporting area so that players from the Youth Academy have more privacy.

El crecimiento del Villarreal, sin embargo, no se ciñe exclusiva-

mente a la parcela deportiva. De hecho, el Submarino ha construi-do un nuevo edificio de oficinas, situado frente al campo de entre-namiento del primer equipo, que albergará las dependencias de gestión y dirección de los ama-

rillos. Desde el departamento de marketing, protocolo o comuni-cación, a la secretaría técnica o a los despachos de la directiva, todo tiene cabida en una construcción amplia, moderna y funcional que también alberga una cafetería para el disfrute de los aficiona-dos amarillos e incluso hasta una

agencia de viajes. Así, el edificio de la residencia donde anterior-mente estaban las oficinas y la ca-fetería queda totalmente dedicado al área deportiva con tal de que los jóvenes futbolistas de la cantera tengan aún más tranquilidad.

Fully adapted to European football after his six seasons at Udinese and being team captain from 2005-2011, his exceptional conditions have also earned him a spot on the Colombian national team.

The third piece is Madrid’s native midfielder Javier Camuñas who has been specifically requested by coach Juan Carlos Garrido to give a greater versatility to the

El Villarreal volverá por tercera vez a la mejor competición

de clubes del planeta tras una sobresaliente temporada de los hombres dirigidos por Juan Carlos Garrido, que finalizaron cuartos en la Liga BBVA y se plantaron nada

menos que en las semifinales de la Europa League. Y todo con nue-ve canteranos recién incorporados del filial que, junto al resto del equipo, cuajaron una espectacu-lar campaña. El Submarino, pese a su derrota en la primera jornada frente a la Real Sociedad (1-0), comenzó la Liga como una exha-lación y encadenó cinco victorias consecutivas (Espanyol, Levante, Deportivo, Málaga y Racing de Santander), finalizando la primera vuelta en la tercera posición, solo por detrás de Real Madrid y FC Barcelona. Con un fútbol precio-sista, de toque, pero a la vez muy efectivo, los amarillos enamoraron

a media Europa con su juego y superaron la fase de grupos de la Europa League en la primera posición tras quedar emparejados en la fase de grupos con PAOK de Salónica, Dínamo de Zagreb y Brujas.

All these happened with nine newcomers from the second team that, along the rest of the squad, performed an spectacular campaign. Despi-te the Submarine’s defeat in the first game against Real Sociedad (1-0), the team had a great start with five straight victories (Espan-yol, Levante, Deportivo, Málaga and Racing Santander), ending the first round of games in third

position, only behind Real Madrid and FC Barcelona. With a beauti-ful game, based in ball possession but yet very effective, half of Eu-rope is in love with the Yellows as they managed to pass the Europa League’s group stage in first posi-tion after facing PAOK Thessalo-niki, Dinamo Zagreb and Bruges.

Con las piernas cargadas pero lle-no de moral, el Submarino derrotó a dos huesos como eran la Real Sociedad y el Espanyol (2-1 y 0-1 respectivamente), pero aún que-daba el tramo final, en el que los castellonenses se medirían a los ‘grandes’ y, aún más importante, a sus rivales directos por estar en la máxima competición continental. Metidos ya de lleno en la pelea, los amarillos afrontaron también dos durísimas eliminatorias ante el Nápoles y el Bayer Leverkusen en la Europa y de la que, en ambos casos, salieron victoriosos.

Uno de los puntos de inflexión, sin embargo, fue la visita a San Ma-més. Aunque los amarillos conta-ban con nueve puntos de ventaja sobre el Athletic de Bilbao, aún tenían que lidiar con Real Madrid, FC Barcelona y Valencia en la vuelta por lo que un triunfo resul-taba vital. Dicho y hecho, los de Juan Carlos Garrido no dieron tre-gua y, con un brillante partido en defensa, vencieron a los vizcaínos por 0-1. La Champions se acerca-ba más y más y los triunfos frente a Getafe y Zaragoza permitieron al Villarreal administrar su venta-ja para mantenerse en el cuarto puesto y centrarse en la Europa League, en la que finalmente solo el campeón pudo dejar fuera a los castellonenses.

However, one of the turning points was the visit to San Ma-més. Although the Yellows had nine points over Athletic de Bil-bao, they still had to deal with Real Madrid, FC Barcelona and Valencia on the second round of games. A victory was vital. Said and done, Juan Carlos Garrido’s men had no mercy and in a bri-lliant defensive game they were able to defeat the Basque team by 0-1. The Champions League was getting closer and wins over Geta-fe and Zaragoza allowed Villarreal to manage its advantage keeping the fourth place and focusing on the Europa League, in which only the champion could beat the club from Castellón.

tras una excelente actuación en la Europa League en la que tan solo el campeón, el FC Porto, fue capaz de eliminar a los amarillos en semifinales. Una mala segunda

mitad en el partido de ida dispu-tado en el estadio Do Dragao fue una losa demasiada pesada (5-1) como para levantar la eliminatoria en El Madrigal una semana des-pués (3-2).

Superada con facilidad la ronda previa ante el Dnper Mogilev bie-lorruso (5-0 y 1-2), los amarillos fueron primeros del Grupo D, donde quedaron encuadrados con el Brujas belga, el Dinamo de Zagreb croata y el PAOK griego. El

El Villarreal tuvo que eliminar a tres potentes rivales con tal de llegar a semifinales de la Europa League: Nápoles, Bayer 04 Le-verkusen y Twente. El conjunto italiano fue el primero en medir sus fuerzas con el equipo de Ga-rrido, empatando en el estadio San Paolo (0-0) y cayendo en El Madrigal por 2-1. In order to reach the semi final stages of the Europa League, Villa-rreal had to see off the challenge of three strong European rivals, namely, Napoli, Bayer Leverkusen and FC Twente. Although second in the Italian League at the time and causing a stir throughout Europe, the Italian’s iron defense was breached twice with goals from Nilmar and Rossi at the Ma-drigal in front of the Yellows’ fans.

Now in the last 16 of the competi-tion, Villarreal now found itself up against Bayer Leverkusen, also curiously enough in second place in one of Europe’s strongest lea-gues, the Bundesliga. The away leg in Germany saw the Subma-rine come from behind twice, before securing victory with a last minute goal from Nilmar following a deadly counter attack. An unfor-gettable strike and one that prepa-red the ground for the Yellows to finish the job with a 2-1 victory at the Madrigal that ensured a place in the quarter-finals.

Waiting for them was Eredivisie Dutch league leaders, FC Twen-te. The first leg was played at the Madrigal and could not have gone better for the home side who thumped the visitors 5-1. But the

Ya en octavos de final, el Villarreal tuvo que enfrentarse con el Ba-yer 04 Leverkusen, curiosamente, otro segundo clasificado de otra de las grandes ligas europeas como es la Bundesliga alemana. El partido de ida, disputado en el estadio BayArena, acabó con 2-3 en el marcador a favor del Submarino, que fue capaz de re-montar por dos veces para llevar-se un importante triunfo con un gol de Nilmar en el último minuto del encuentro tras una mortífera contra. Un tanto inolvidable. En el choque de vuelta, jugado en El Madrigal, los amarillos volvieron a imponerse (2-1) consiguiendo

así su clasificación para cuartos de final de la competición.

Allí le esperaba el líder de la Ere-divisie holandesa, el Twente. El partido de ida se jugaba en el feudo amarillo y el resultado no pudo ser mejor para los intereses del Submarino, ya que el Villarreal goleó 5-1 a su rival. Un encuen-tro en el que la felicidad no fue completa debido a la grave lesión que sufrió Gonzalo Rodríguez por una brutal entrada de Janko ya en los últimos minutos. En tierras holandesas el equipo de Garrido volvió a ganar, esta vez por 1-3 con un marcado protagonismo de la cantera amarilla.

El Villarreal ya estaba a una sola eliminatoria de llegar a su primer

final europea, pero se topó con el que más tarde sería el campeón de la Europa League, el FC Porto. Tras cantar el alirón también en su liga, el conjunto dirigido por André Villas-Boas goleó a los amarillos 5-1 en el partido de ida dispu-tado en el estadio Do Dragao. El Villarreal llegó a adelantarse en el marcador con un gol de cabeza de Cani, pero el Porto reaccionó y castigó con dureza una mala se-gunda mitad del Submarino.

Pese a tener muy cuesta arriba su clasificación, el Villarreal lo intentó en el partido de vuelta e incluso acabó ganando por 3-2 al Porto en un encuentro en el que la comunión con la afición fue perfecta. Era el adiós, pero con la cabeza bien alta.

would see Villarreal come up against FC Porto, the side that would eventually come out as champions. With the domestic league already in the bag, Andre Villas-Boas’ men eventually thum-ped the Yellows 5-1 in the first leg at the Do Dragao stadium. But it was Villarreal that took the lead thanks to a headed goal from Cani, only for the home side to come fighting back and punish a

poor second half display from the Submarine.

Despite having it all to do in the second leg, Villarreal roared on by its fans, went for it from the start and finished up 3-2 winners, sa-ying goodbye to the competition, but leaving it with its head held high.

En una campaña de ratificación en la segunda máxima catego-

ría, el filial consiguió mantenerse en una competitiva Liga Adelante, si bien lo hizo con dos partes bien diferenciadas. Viendo la primera vuelta realizada por el Villarreal B nadie diría que el filial amarillo

tuvo que sufrir hasta la penúltima jornada del campeonato liguero para mantenerse, por segunda temporada consecutiva, en la ca-tegoría de plata del fútbol español.

Los futbolistas dirigidos por el navarro Javi Gracia empezaron muy bien con una sobresaliente primera vuelta e incluso coquetea-ron durante varias jornadas con los puestos de una inalcanzable promoción de ascenso a Prime-ra División, pero poco a poco el equipo fue perdiendo fuelle. Tan-to, que el club decidió rescindir el contrato de Gracia al frente

del filial y colocar en su lugar a José Francisco Molina con tal de revertir la situación en las últimas jornadas del campeonato. Y así fue, la victoria conseguida ante el Recreativo de Huelva por 2-0 en la penúltima cita fue clave para que el Mini Submarino celebrara su permanencia en Segunda Divi-sión A una temporada más.

Un partido inolvidable en el que valieron los golazos de Airam en la primera parte y del ghanés Waka-so Mubarak ya en el tiempo de descuento del segundo acto. El centrocampista supuso, junto a

differently on both rounds of the season, nobody that had seen Vi-llarreal B play at the beginning of the year could have thought that it would struggle until the penul-timate game to keep its place, for the second consecutive season, at Spanish football’s silver league.

losing steam. Therefore the club decided to terminate Gracia’s contract as the B-team coach and replace him with José Francisco Molina, looking to reverse the si-tuation of the last couple of ga-mes in the tournament. A victory over Recreativo de Huelva by 2-0 in the penultimate game made it possible and the Mini Submarine celebrated its “Segunda” status for another year.

This game was unforgettable with amazing goals by Airam in the first half and Ghanaian Wakaso Muba-

su compañero Mario Gaspar, unos refuerzos de lujo llegados desde el primer equipo. Ambos jugaron muchos minutos con el Villarreal, pero tras finalizar la temporada en Primera División prefirieron ayu-dar al filial amarillo con tal de que se salvara. Un gran gesto.

Pese a los altibajos, a lo largo de la temporada el Villarreal B cuajó

espectaculares encuentros. Por ejemplo, el que le midió al cam-peón, el Real Betis, en el Mini Es-tadi de la Ciudad Deportiva y que acabó en victoria para los amari-llos gracias a un solitario gol de penalti anotado por el gallego Iago Falqué antes de que se cumplira el minuto 5. O el triunfo consegui-do por 2-1 en casa ante el Gra-

nada, otro de los equipos que al final de la temporada consiguió el soñado ascenso a Primera.

Mención especial merece la ac-tuación de Falqué, que fue el máximo goleador del filial amari-llo con 11 tantos en 36 encuen-tros disputados con la camiseta amarilla.

Despite the ups and downs throughout the season, Villarreal B played some very spectacular games. For example, against di-vision champion Real Betis at the Mini Stadium in the training grounds. This game ended with a victory for the Yellows with a lonely goal by Galicia native Iago Falqué, scored before the fifth minute. Or

the home victory by 2-1 against Granada, that also achieved the dream of the “Primera” promotion at the end of the season.

Special mention to Falqué’s performance, being the second team’s top scorer with 11 goals in 36 games played with the yellow jersey.

El Villarreal Juvenil A se proclamó campeón del Grupo VII de Divi-sión de Honor con toda la épica posible. Los amarillos golearon sin piedad al Alicante en la última jor-nada y acabaron consiguiendo un ‘set’ en blanco (6-0) para cantar el alirón bajo la atenta mirada del presidente del Villarreal, Fernando Roig. Al juvenil dirigido por Juan-vi Peinado tan solo le hacía falta sumar un punto para proclamarse campeón por delante del Valencia y no solo sumó tres, sino que lo

hizo como solo los grandes cam-peones saben hacerlo.

Villarreal’s Juvenile-A became Group VII of the Honor Division champion with all the epic pos-sible. The Yellows had no mercy against Alicante during the last game of the season and mana-ged to score a brilliant 6-0, ce-lebrating the title under the wat-chful eye of Villarreal’s President, Fernando Roig. The team led by Juanvi Peinado only needed one

point in order to win the title over Valencia, but won three like only champions do.

RODA REMAINS IN THE ELITE

It didn’t seem like an easy season for CD Roda on its début among the elite on the Honor Division (playing against historic teams like Valencia, Murcia, Hercules or Levante). El Villarreal C.F. nace el 10 de marzo de 1923, “para fomen-

tar todos los deportes y en es-pecial el del fútbol”, tal y como especifica su carta fundacional. La primera junta del club estuvo formada por el farmacéutico José

Calduch Almela, como presidente, el empleado de banco José Mar-tínez Aguilar, como secretario, el administrador de correos Carlos Calatayud Jordá, como tesorero, y los vocales Juan Nebot, Alfonso Saera, Manuel Calduch, Pascual Arrufat Catalá, Vicente Cabedo Meseguery Manuel Amorós For-tuño.

PRIMERAS DECISIONES: CAMPO, ENTRADAS E INDUMENTARIA

Una de las primeras decisiones de la primera junta directiva del club (24/05/23) fue la de alquilar el campo del Villarreal por 60 pe-setas el mes y establecer también el precio de las localidades. Así, se determina que la entrada para los adultos sería de 0’5 pesetas,

mientras que para los niños sería de la mitad. Las mujeres entrarían gratis al campo. En esa misma reunión se decidió comprar las primeras doce equipaciones, que serían blancas en la parte superior y negras en la inferior. Esos fueron los primeros colores del Villarreal C.F. y se mantuvieron así hasta 1946, año en el que cambiarían a los actuales amarillo y azul.

LOS ESTRENOS

El campo del Villarreal se inaugu-ra el 17/06/1923 con la disputa de un encuentro entre el C.D. Castellón y el Cervantes, dos de los equipos más importantes de la capital. Pasarían cuatro meses para que el Villarreal disputase su primer partido amistoso. De esta

FIRST DECISIONS: STADIUM, TIC-KETS AND EQUI P MENT

One of the first decisions under-taken by the club directors on 24th April 1923 was to rent the stadium for the price of 60 pe-setas per month (approximately 0.36 Euro). Once the stadium

was acquired ticket prices could be set. It was de ter mi ned that the adult entrance would be 0, 5 pesetas (0,005 Euro), and half price for children. Women would receive free entrance. At the same meeting it was decided to buy the first kit, which would be white shirts and black shorts. These were the first colours of Villarreal C.F. and they remained so un-til1946, when they switched to the current yellow and blue colours.

THE BEGINNING

The Villarreal pitch was inau-gurated June 17th 1923 with a match between C.D. Castellón and Cervantes, two of the most important teams of the provincial

ACABA LA GUERRA; REGRESA EL FÚTBOL

Con el fin de la Guerra Civil Espa-ñola, regresa el fútbol al campo de

THE TEAM BEGINS TO WALK

The first important date for Villa-rreal C.F. took place during the 1934-1935 season, when Villa-rreal C.F. had the chance to gain promotion to the 2nd Division against Cartagena (at that time the current 2nd Division B and 3rd Division did not exist). Sadly, Villarreal C.F. failed to gain promo-

tion. However a year later Villarreal C.F. came first in the 1st Regional Division Championship, but the unfortunate breakout of the Spa-nish Civil War ended all sporting competitions.

WAR ENDS; FOOTBALL RETURNS

After the end of the Spanish Civil War football returned to El Ma-drigal stadium (named in 1925). Between 1939 and 1950, Villa-rreal C.F. played in the 2nd Re-gional category, which com pri sed of three different groups I, IV, V. At the end of the 1950-1951 season Villarreal C.F. gained pro mo tion

to the 1º Regional category after winning the 2º Regional.

THE 1950’S

Villarreal played in the 1st Regio-nal category from 1952 to 1956. During those seasons the team won the Championship, finished 4th twice and 7th. The success of the last campaign, finishing as Cham pio ns, saw the team promo-ted to the Na tio nal 3rd Division where they remained until the 1960-1961 season whereby after finishing 14th they were relegated.

LOS AÑOS 60

El Villarreal comenzó, por lo tanto, la década de los sesenta en Pri-mera Regional. Los dos primeros

años, el equipo deambuló lejos de los puestos de ascenso, pero des-pués de dos años finalizando ter-ceros, lograron subir en la 66/67, tras quedar clasificados como los primeros. Desde entonces y hasta el 1970, el conjunto amarillo mi-litó en Tercera División. Ese año, el Villarreal finalizó la temporada primero del grupo V y, por lo tan-to, consiguió su primer ascenso a Segunda División.

LA GRIS DÉCADA DE LOS 70

THE 1970’S

The 1970’s was a poor decade for Vi lla rreal C.F. In their first season in the National 2nd Division the “yellow team” avoided the drop by the skin of their teeth, something

Spain was getting ready to host the football World Cup in1982, and during that time, Villarreal

was trying to achieve stability. From the beginning of the 1980’s they remained in the National 3rd Division until the 1986-1987 sea-son whereby they were promoted to the National 2nd Division B. The following two years saw Villa-rreal C.F. occupy positions in the upper part of the table but in the 1989-1990 season they finished

The “yellow team” began the 1992-1993 season in the silver division of the Spanish football league from which they would not descend again. Since then, and until they reached their first pro-motion to the elite category, Villa-rreal C.F. occupied the middle to lower part of the table. However, in the 1997-1998 season Villarreal C.F. finished the league in fourth place and entered a play-off with

the chance to gain promotion to the National 1st Division. The opponents were Sociedad Depor-tiva Compostela. The first match was played at El Madrigal and en-ded 0-0 with the return leg at the Multiusos de San Lázaro on 24th May 1998. This historic game en-ded 1-1 with Alberto getting the all important goal. After 65 years Villarreal C.F. were promoted for the first time to the best category.We make it: one team more in ‘Primera División’

A NEW TEAM IN THE ‘LIGA DE LAS ESTRELLAS’

Villarreal C.F. proudly played their first National 1st Division match on 31st August 1998, against the mighty Real Madrid in the world famous Santiago Bernabeu sta-dium. A week later, El Madrigal opened its doors to the Liga de las estrellas with the visit of Cel-

ta de Vigo. During that historical season even though the team had a fantastic start the “yellow team” were relegated to the National 2nd division. However, the stay in se-cond would be short lived.

In the 1999-2000 season they finished in 3rd position and were promoted to the National 1st Di-vision, a place where they remain to this day. Incredibly the following year Villarreal finished an ama-zing 7th. Villarreal C.F. ended the 2001-2002 and 2002-2003 sea-sons in 15th place. In the summer of 2003 Villarreal C.F. won their first European trophy beating Hee-renven in the final of the Intertoto Cup. This fantastic achievement allowed them to play in the pres-tigious UEFA Cup where they as to-nis hingly reached the semi-finals. It goes without saying that the ap-pea rance in an UEFA Cup semi-final was one of the greatest suc-

UNO MÁS DE LA LIGA DE LAS ESTRELLAS

El Villarreal debutaba en Primera el 31/08/98, en un partido que se disputó en el Santiago Bernabéu contra el Real Madrid. Siete días después, el 12/09/98, El Madrigal abría sus puertas a la Liga de las Estrellas con un Villarreal-Celta de Vigo. Esa campaña, y pese a realizar una muy buena primera vuelta del cam peonato, el conjun-to amarillo descendió a Se gun da, categoría en la que tan sólo per-manecería un año. En la 99/00,

y después de quedar terceros en Segunda, el equipo regresaba a Primera División, que ya no ha vuelto a abandonar.

Tan sólo un año después, el Villa-rreal finalizaba séptimo en la Liga, la que hasta entonces fue su me-jor clasificación en el cam peo nato regular. Los amarillos acabaron de ci mo quin tos en la 01/ 02 y en la 02/03. En verano de 2003 (el 27.08.03), el conjunto amarillo lograba su primer título europeo al derrotar en la final de la Copa Intertoto al Hee r enven, por 1-2 en

That unbe-lievable triumph was rewarded with qualification to the esteemed Champions following year Villa-rreal C.F. finished League, the

most important club competition in world football. Automatic quali-fication was assured after Villarreal C.F. beat the English team Ever-ton. Villarreal C.F. were not in the Champions League just to make up the numbers and qualified for the knock-out stages by finishing top of their group, a group which included the mighty Manchester United. Astoundingly this small team in Spain whom 16 years be-fore were playing in the 4th “di-vision” of Spanish football, beat Glasgow Rangers and Inter Milan

El gran rendimiento que el Villa-rreal fue demostrando en Prime-ra con el pasar de los años hacía presagiar un salto de calidad. Y así fue. El Submarino amarillo lo-gró una campaña histórica, que-dando en la tercera posición en la Liga 2004/2005 con 65 puntos -detrás del Barcelona y el Real Madrid-, con un brillante fútbol desplegado en todas las líneas y, además, con un Diego Forlán que se consagró ‘pichichi’ de España y de Europa con 25 goles.

Después de haber llegado a la cima de la cla si ficación, el Villa-rreal se ganó el derecho de so-ñar en la primera aventura por la Liga de Campeones 2005-2006, la competición de clubes más importante del planeta. Una tra-vesía en la que, finalmente, el Submarino causó sensación en Europa: superó con facilidad la previa frente al Everton inglés, luego lideró invicto su grupo en la primera fase y fue pasando uno a uno los obstáculos hasta que –con muy mala fortuna- se quedó en las puertas de la final, ante un

It was also the ‘Gunners’ that proved to be the scourge of the Yellows in their previous Champions’ League campaign, although defeat could not cast a cloud over a brilliant performan-ce on the European stage. In a difficult group consisting of Man-chester United, Glasgow Celtic and Aalborg Villarreal started its campaign with a well-earned draw at Old Trafford against Cristiano

Ronaldo’s Manchester United in a game that could have gone done in the history books had Guille Franco’s back heel crept into the net instead of hitting the post. Alex Ferguson’s outfit was also unable to win at the Madrigal (0-0) where Celtic went down (1-0) and Aalborg was beaten 6-3 in a goalfest. Away from home the Yellows drew 2-2 on Danish soil before losing 2-0 in Glasgow once they had already qualified for the knock out stages.

Un lugar en la clasificación que el Subma-rino se ganó gracias a una gran reacción en la segunda vuelta. Al final y tras la negativa de la UEFA a admitir al Real Mallorca en la Europa League, que acabó quinto el torneo liguero, debido a sus problemas econó micos, el Villarreal fue invitado a ocupar su plaza por méritos deportivos. Un premio bien merecido por los amarillos. El Villarreal no empezó nada bien la Liga. Tanto es así

que en la séptima jornada del campeonato llegó a ser el faro-lillo rojo de la clasificación justo después de perder injustamente en casa del Xerez por 2-1. El con-junto dirigido por aquel entonces por Ernesto Valverde combinaba grandes actuaciones, como en la goleada ante el Tenerife en El Madrigal, con otros partidos en los que el equipo mostraba su peor versión. Debido a ello, la directiva del club decidió dar un cambio de rumbo en el equipo y sustituir al entrenador vasco cuando se cum-plía la vigésimo cita liguera y el Submarino cayó ante el Osasuna en casa por 0-2.

Su relevo en el banquillo del Sub-marino lo tomó Juan Carlos Ga-rrido. Un hombre de la casa que conocía a la perfección todos los entresijos de la nave amarilla. La primera victoria con el valenciano

El Club Groguet es el único Club Infantil creado por un equipo

de fútbol de Primera División. Se trata de un club gratuito para todos sus socios y trabaja con fi-nes educativos, no competitivos, voluntarios, familiares e integra-dores. Los valores que este club comunica son el compañerismo, el compromiso, el deporte, la sa-lud, la amistad y la diversión.

Desde marzo de 2007, el Club Groguet se dirige tanto a público infantil como juvenil, haciendo partícipes también a los padres en los actos en los que interac-túan sus hijos.

Los socios del Club Groguet son niños y niñas de entre 5 y 16 años de dentro y fuera de la provincia de Castellón. Actualmente ya son más de 8.000 los socios que disponen de su carnet del Club Groguet y participan en todas las actividades deportivas, culturales y sociales que este club infantil les ofrece.

‘TORNEO INTERESCOLAR’: FÚT-BOL 7 ENTRE 80 COLEGIOS

Más de 1.700 niños y niñas de diferentes colegios de la provin-cia de Castellón participan en el torneo Interescolar que se juega,

de manera íntegra, cada semana durante todo el curso escolar en los terrenos de juego de la Ciudad Deportiva del Villarreal CF.

Desde octubre hasta junio, niños y niñas de más de 80 centros es-colares de toda la provincia han disfrutado del campeonato que organiza el Club Groguet, en el que no sólo hay en juego un títu-lo, sino que también es una gran oportunidad de hacer amistades.
