MULTI USE REC FACILITY #3
WHAT WE LEARNED
FACILITY• Single floor layout is beneficial to accessibility• Consider the path of travel of players from entry to facility• Manager’s office at the entrance to the facility• Clearly associate the lounge with the ice shed for viewing and access.• Generous space on the perimeter of the playing surface and consider
space between sheets• Consider barrier free access for the ice sheets.• Have a separate room to house ice maintenance equipment.• High ceiling height allows for off season use and comfortable curling
environment
WHAT WE LEARNED
FACILITY• Viewing areas should be above ice level, optimally at about one metre
above ice surface.• Viewing areas at end of ice sheets• Limit natural light onto ice sheets• Lounge area should be multi use• Consider a fitness facility• Be generous with the mechanical room and have remote access control• Change rooms should have lockers• Consider “back of house” access for Kitchen and Bar Areas
WHAT WE LEARNED
PROGRAM• Address the demographic of the community. Set the goal to match the
membership demography with the community.• Consider the Kitchen (Orillia) and Bar (King) as distinct business units• Review the ownership of the building – Club or Town ownership• Although 100 members per sheet is optimal, there are other incomes that
help the bottom line
VALUES• Consider a fee to each member that is the same for all, then individual
fees for each event/league.• Separate the capital fee from the membership fee.• Consider the off season use in the business plan. Soccer and Baseball
could use an indoor training facility. The High School could use a volleyballor basketball court.
• Incorporate storage rental space for other sports.• Provide independent access for outside users if in McCulley Robertson
Sports Centre.
