ABOUT THE DEAFAIDS

“‘I Dig a Pygmy,’ by Charles Hawtrey and the Deaf Aids…” quipped John Lennon as he introduced the first song on The Beatles’ last album, Let It Be. It is from this ad lib that this group of talented Beatlemaniacs in the Washington, DC, area drew the name for their band. While they do not don the boots and suits or grow mop tops, The DeafAids stay true to the music of the Beatles by using vintage Rickenbacker, Gretsch, and Höfner instruments to help capture the classic Beatles sound. The combination of good

musicianship, vintage gear, solid vocals, and irreverent attitude enable The DeafAids to deliver a rockin’ good time to their audiences. The DeafAids are Bob Smarrelli (vocals, rhythm guitar), Randy Janka (vocals, bass, keyboards), Pete Schoenhoff (vocals, lead guitar, harmonica), and Rick Silton (drums and percussion).

PROGRAM NOTES

ACROSS THE UNIVERSE, Lennon and McCartney After having an argument with his wife, Cynthia, John Lennon composed this song. “I was .. irritated. ... she’d gone to sleep and I kept hearing these words over and over, flowing like an endless stream. I went downstairs and it turned into sort of a cosmic song rather than an irritated song.” The refrain “Jai Guru Deva Om” is a mantra learned when the Beatles were studying transcendental meditation with the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. The Beatles recorded this in several versions, and we have combined choral work from various versions in this performance. NOWHERE MAN, Lennon and McCartneyJohn Lennon wrote this piece after struggling to write a song for the album, Rubber Soul. “I thought of myself sitting there, doing nothing and getting nowhere,” he once said. This song begins with a three-part harmony.

I’VE JUST SEEN A FACE, Lennon and McCartney Primarily written by Paul McCartney, this song draws from American country and bluegrass. American country music was an early influence on The Beatles’ sound, and their early albums included several country covers, including “Act Naturally” and “Honey Don’t.”

YELLOW SUBMARINE, Lennon and McCartneyPaul McCartney said of this contemporary sea-chanty, “I just made up a little tune in my head, then started making a story, sort of an ancient mariner, telling the young kids where he’d lived and how there’d been a place where he had a yellow submarine. It’s pretty much my song as I recall, written for Ringo in that little twilight moment.” —Paul McCartney: Many Years from Now by Barry Miles

MARTHA, MY DEAR, Lennon and McCartneyIn 1965, Paul McCartney bought his first pet, an Old English sheepdog puppy that he named Martha, for whom this song is titled. McCartney said of this song, “Whereas it would appear to anybody else to be a song to a girl called Martha, it’s actually a dog, and our relationship was platonic, believe me.” —Paul McCartney: Many Years from Now by Barry Miles

I’LL FOLLOW THE SUN, Lennon and McCartneyPaul McCartney said of this song, “I wrote that in my front parlor in Forthlin Road. I was about 16. ‘I’ll Follow The Sun’ was one of those very early ones. I seem to remember writing it just after I’d had the flu... It wouldn’t have been considered good enough [to be performed by the group]…we had this R&B image in Liverpool, a rock ’n’ roll, R&B, hardish image with the leather.” —Paul McCartney, The Complete Beatles Recording Sessions, by Mark Lewisohn

HERE COMES THE SUN, HarrisonGeorge Harrison wrote this song in Eric Clapton’s garden using one of Clapton’s acoustic guitars. When The Beatles’ manager Brian Epstein died in 1967, the band had to handle more of their accounting and business affairs, which Harrison hated. He wrote this song after attending a round of business meetings. It was inspired by the long winters in England which Harrison thought went on forever. —Songfacts.com

IF I FELL, Lennon and McCartneyJohn Lennon wrote this song, which he called “my first attempt at a ballad... it’s semiautobiographical, but not consciously.” “[The song] opens with an intro that contains no musical elements found in the rest of the song, and the body of this song has no real verse/chorus structure, just 2 verses that each turn halfway through on an unexpected chord. The song is very expressive, with large intervals between the notes in a quasi-modal way.” —Johan Cavalli, Stockholm music historian on Songfacts.com

BECAUSE, Lennon and McCartneyJohn Lennon got the idea for this song when he heard Yoko Ono playing Beethoven’s “Moonlight Sonata” on the piano. He asked her to play it backwards, and came up with “Because” based on what he heard. This is the only Beatles song with three singers in harmony throughout.

IN MY LIFE, Lennon and McCartneyJohn Lennon wrote most of the lyrics after being asked why a book he wrote, In His Own Write, revealed more about him than his songs did. At the age of just 23, Lennon already had lost many people who were close to him, including his mother Julia and his friend and early Beatle Stu Sutcliffe. One of the most beautiful Beatles songs, John called it “A little piece of artwork.” Many have named this as their favorite of all Beatles compositions.

ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE, Lennon and McCartneyBeginning with the French national anthem and incorporating elements from “La Marseillaise,” Glenn Miller‘s “In the Mood,” and Wayne Shanklin’s “Chanson D’Amour,” it is believed that the piece was written in 1967 as part of Britain’s contribution to Our World, the first worldwide television broadcast, delivering a message that would be universally understood and appreciated by all.

YESTERDAY, Lennon and McCartneyWritten and originally performed by McCartney, it was the first solo performance by the band. The beautiful harmonies and text describes the feelings and emotions of the end of a relationship. McCartney dreamed the melody but thought he heard it before. He spent weeks singing

it for other musicians trying to find out if it was a song already written. Convinced it was an original, he recorded it. According to The Guinness Book of World Records, it is the most covered pop song of all time.

HELLO, GOODBYE, Lennon and McCartneyLennon described the song as “three minutes of contradictions and meaningless juxtapositions.” The song came about as a result of an experiment between McCartney and Alistair Taylor, an assistant of the Beatles’ manager. McCartney asked her to shout out the opposite of anything he said. The song is full of antonyms and as McCartney stated, is “a deep theme in the universe, duality.”

ELEANOR RIGBY, Lennon and McCartneyPaul McCartney liked the name “Eleanor Rigby” because it sounded natural. The Beatles didn’t play any of the instruments on this. All the music came from the string players, who were hired as session musicians. A string section scored by Beatles producer George Martin consisting of four violins, two violas, and two cellos were used in recording.

THE LONG AND WINDING ROAD, Lennon and McCartneyMcCartney originally wrote the song at his farm in Scotland, and was inspired by the growing tension among The Beatles. McCartney said later “I just sat down at my piano in Scotland, started playing and came up with that song, imagining it was going to be done by someone like Ray Charles. I have always found inspiration in the calm beauty of Scotland and again it proved the place where I found inspiration.” The song takes the form of a piano-based ballad, with conventional chord changes.

LET IT BE, Lennon and McCartneyAs Paul McCartney reflected on writing this song, he said, “One night during this tense time I had a dream I saw my mum, who’d been dead (10 years or so. . . . In the dream) she said, ‘It’ll be all right.’ I’m not sure if she used the words ‘let it be’ but that was the gist (of her advice. . . . So that) got me writing the song ‘Let It Be.’ I literally started off ‘Mother Mary,’ which was her name, ‘When I find myself in times of trouble,’ which I certainly found myself in.” —Paul McCartney: Many Years from Now by Barry Miles. This is Guerra’s debut as a pianist and vocalist for SCC.

GOODNIGHT, Lennon and McCartneyJohn Lennon wrote this lullaby for his son, Julian, who did not discover it was written for him until 12 years after its release on the White Album. It is one those rare Beatle songs to be recorded with sweeping orchestral arrangement and chorus.

HEY JUDE, Lennon and McCartneyThis is another song written for John Lennon’s son, Julian, this time by Paul McCartney. He wrote this as “Hey Jules,” a song meant to comfort 5-year-old Julian as his parents were getting a divorce. Paul McCartney once said, “I was going through [Hey Jude] for [John] and Yoko when I was living in London. I had a music room at the top of

the house and I was playing ‘Hey Jude’ when I got to the line ‘The movement you need is on your shoulder’ and I turned round to John and said: ‘I’ll fix that if you want.’ And he said: ‘You won’t, you know, that’s a great line, that’s the best line in it.’ Now that’s the other side of a great collaborator—don’t touch it, man, that’s OK.”
