Dr. Sonia Leziy and Dr. Brahm Miller offer a constantly changing and unique approach to dental

education for established clinicians. Our goal is to educate our colleagues and to assist them in the

development of their skills and knowledge.

Our partnerships with industry co-support our academic agenda, allowing us to provide programs that

can often only be run by large organizations. In this new academic year, our returning and new

membership will be exposed to cutting edge dentistry, health care concepts, treatment planning

sessions, practice management and personal growth programs.

The success of the VIP program is also the result of the contribution of its long-standing mentors: Dr.

Mark Olesen, Dr. Bryan Hicks, Dr. Priscilla Walsh, Dr. Kendall James, Dr. Mathieu Nault, and

technicians Nico Piennaar and Klaas van der Walt.

This study club has become an integral part of the professional lives of our colleagues by fostering the

sharing of clinical and practice management knowledge, treatment planning and discussion, while

offering peer-support in a comfortable and social environment.

SYNOPSISThis presentation will explore how innovations and concept changes shape our skills and treatment planning solutions, while underscoring the importance of collaborative planning between restoring dentist, technician and surgical team members. Surgical concepts that will be reviewed include virtual planning and guided surgery/provisional treatment, immediate implant placement and restoration strategies, and management of bone deficiencies and the gingival phenotype.

Prosthetic concepts that will be touched on include post-surgical implant provisionalization, digital scanning, anatomic abutment design and restorative material selection for esthetics and long-term stability, including different scenarios for the hybrid (screw-retained/cemented) crown.

OBJECTIVES

Soft and hard tissue enhancement procedures used in surgical practice today. Recognize what the surgical team can do, but understand the limitations.

Deciding on immediate, early or delayed implant placement and restoration protocols. Recognize the pros and cons of these decisions. The use and fabrication of customized healing abutments and provisionalization: Why they are important steps in guiding tissue form in both anterior and posterior regions.

Conventional impressions vs. optical scanning. The pros and cons of both procedures.

Review today’s restorative material options; understand the strengths and limitations of our product options.

Recognize why digital workflows are dramatically improving accuracy and practice efficiency, while reducing errors in the treatment planning phase, surgical protocols and restorative design.

The following learning objectives will be explored in this presentation:

Dr. ZINA ALKAFAJITHE RESURGENCE OF SDF

The underworld of subgingival biofilm can be a formidable environment for clinicians. Traditionally, the battle against biofilm communities thriving subgingivally has been fought with a blend of hand and power-driven instruments. In the last few years in North America and for over 10 years in Europe, indications for the use of air-pressured mechanical biofilm disruption technology with the use of low abrasive-based powders for both supragingival and subgingival biofilm has been developed. This evidence-informed review will explore the air-flow mechanism and its clinical application for biofilm management.

SYNOPSISDentistry has not advantaged itself to laser technology as our medical colleagues have for surgical, interventional or preventive therapies. Simply put, physicians can use one laser wavelength for a procedure while the oral cavity has 5 surfaces (enamel, dentin, soft tissue, bone and now implants) we need to treat. The “all tissue laser” designed for dentistry satisfies our need to treat all 5 surfaces.

You will get an evidenced based understanding of an array of marketed lasers with their advantages and disadvantages; clarifying from corporate rhetoric and marketing with clinical results.

The erbium laser is the “dentist’s” laser facilitating the most minimally invasive delivery of restorative and surgical treatment compared to any blade, drill, piezoelectric or surgical elevators, benefiting the patient emotionally and clinically.

OBJECTIVESSOFT TISSUE grafting by tissue ablation vs “cutting” results in less inflammation, pain and sensitivity. Procedures, parameters and techniques will be discussed with respect to FGG & CTG grafting, tunnelling augmentation techniques, with autogenous and allograft donor tissues.

HARD TISSUES also benefit from the usage of the erbium laser compared to the dental drill or curettes. Traditional periodontal flap surgery, sinus lifts, GBR with blocks, ridge splits and tenting and SFOT all benefit from the minimally invasive approach of the erbium laser.

PERIIMPLANTITIS treatment involves the removal of the contaminated oxide layer of the implant surface followed by regeneration. Many mechanical devices on the market are unpredictable and impractical while the erbium lasers leave the implant surface biofilm free to receive the benefits of regeneration.

EXTRACTION SITES: successful socket preservation and immediate implants depend on the buccal plate ensuring bone graft stability. Mechanical forces result in more bone resorption. Erbium lasers ablate without touching the alveolar plate. Socket curettage of pathogens is equally important and only laser energy can reduce microbial levels without mechanical trauma ... reducing the need for antibiotics in the worldwide pandemic of antibiotic resistance

AN UPDATE TO CONTEMPORARY DENTAL CERAMICS

New ceramic materials have changed the way we practice dentistry by offering a strong, esthetic and affordable restorative option for our patients.   But ceramic materials do not handle the same as metal-based restorations and improper selection or handling can lead to premature failure.

This course will teach you how to select and handle different types of  ceramic materials that are currently used in dentistry that will be much less confusing than typical marketing rhetoric.  We will review the best clinical practices based on research studies conducted at the UAB School of Dentistry and provide pearls for you to take back to the office.

AN UPDATE TO DIRECT BONDED RESTORATIONS

Due to our patients esthetic desires and the advantages of minimal tooth preparations, direct bonded restorations are a mainstay of most dental practices.  Although advances in materials have improved the outcome of composite restorations, these restorations can still be accompanied by post-op sensitivity, marginal breakdown and secondary caries.

This course aims to review the techniques for optimal bonding based on evidence as well as highlight the uses of new bonding systems that can simplify your technique while maintaining performance.  We will also look at the clinical applications for emerging materials like bulk fill composites, bioactive materials, universal adhesive, silver diamine fluoride, resin infiltration and microabrasion.
