UVA Scouts Teletandam Program

One of VCU’s most innovative student programsis being looked at by the most famous schools inthe region. On November 12th, language teachersand administrators from UVA will be coming toobserve a Teletandam session with the Universityof Mexico City, to see if there is anything that canthey can use in their own curriculum. As far as what the project does, is this: imagineyou’re in a language class and the day’sassignment is to pick a partner and practice adialogue. Now imagine that the student that youare practicing with is thousands of miles away inanother country. The Teletandam program doesjust that. The program has been expanding sinceits inception in 2013, with partner universities inMexico, Spain, China, and Russia. The program isheaded up by Professor Maria De Panbehchi andDr. Tony Brinkwirth of the School of World Studies, and shows no sign of slowing down in the nearfuture.

Employed by You to Help You

You have a big project due tomorrow morning. You and a partner need to record a four-minutedialogue for your Spanish class and have no ideahow to use the software. Your partner and you arepanicking and by mistake you cancel out of theprogram. That’s when one of the many employeesof the WSMC comes to help, because odds are, they’ve had to use the same software. The WSMC employs both students and teachersfor its staff. Students like Maya Barnes or GillianThrockmorton work all week to help other studentswith assignments and how to use the software inthe lab, because they are things that they havedone and still do in their own classes. Teacherslike Maria De Panbehchi are able to help otherinstructors with scheduling classes and setting upTeletandams because it is what she does for herclasses every week. The WSMC employs peoplelike you, to help you.
