Happy New Year!I cannot believe we are already in 2015!

I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season. As I wascelebrating Christmas, I reflected on how much love is givenand shared at this time. Wouldn’t it be great if that show oflove and friendship was shared every day of the year with thesame enthusiasm? I feel that we, as Pilots, share our friend-ship and love all year long. The bonds of Pilot friendship canbe felt every time we meet. What a wonderful feeling!

I know many Clubs were busy with activities during the hol-iday season, and we cannot wait to hear all about them. TheNansemond River pilot Club had an auction fundraiser as partof our Christmas party. Marion Ritter did a wonderful job asauctioneer. We always look forward to our Christmas auc-tions. They are so much fun.

We have a big year planned ahead of us, and I look for-ward to getting it started. Our Spring Convention is justaround the corner and will be here before we know it.

I wish each and everyone of you a peaceful, healthy NewYear. Welcome to 2015!

In Pilot love,

—Susan

It’s FriendshipIt’s as old as man himself, yet as new as this moment or the next. It’s ever changing and somehow ever constant. It’s stronger than any wall ever built. It overcomes politics and national barriers. It can’t be blinded by strange customs or blocked by foreign languages. It has been written about and analyzed by wise men;Yet it has never been defined, and never will be.You can’t see it or touch it; yet it’s everywhere. It survives weakness and neglect, thrives on thoughtfulness. Its possibilities are infinite; its strength limitless. It’s what makes man human, what makes life worth living. It’s friendship.

January. The beginning of a new year that holds so much promise. Doyou make resolutions each year?I have made a lot of New Year’s resolutions, only to break them inshort order. There is actually a “holiday” for that; January 17 is “DitchNew Year’s Resolutions Day.” Sometimes I don’t even make it thatfar! Maybe as individuals, we don’t have enough “willpower” to followthrough on things that we really want to accomplish. But in our clubs,we can support each other. So let’s make some resolutions for ourclub. Here are some resolutions to help:

*Putting more fun into our meetings*Making new members feel welcome and valued*Being visible in our communities

If we accomplish these “resolutions,” maybe others will be inspired tojoin. Let’s make 2015 a great year!

HappyValentine’s

Day!

It is always exciting to begin a new year and toplan for the future. Even though our Pilot yeardoes not coincide with the actual calendar year, itfeels like a new Pilot year has begun.

Does your Club have an exciting FUNdraisingevent planned for the months ahead? I hope soand sincerely believe it will be your most successfulevent yet! You should too. Optimism is the bestmotivator. Faith in what you will accomplish, nomatter what your plans may be, is the key to suc-cess.

The most important element in the process issomething that echoes through each of our mindsfrom childhood. “What do you say?” is a phrasethat each of us heard again and again. Rememberto always say “Thank you”. These two words maybe the most important part of FUNdraising. Whenexpressing your appreciation by saying thesewords, please make sure they are coming from theheart.

Valentine’s Day is the perfect time to remem-ber that kind words spoken from the heart are thewarmest gift we can give. There are hundreds ofopportunities to express our thanks during aFUNdraiser.

Thank you for coming, for participating, foroffering, for giving, for volunteering, for caring, forhosting, for buying, for considering, for joining.

Most importantly, “Thank YOU for being aPILOT!” Here’s to successful FUNdraisers andremembering to say “Thank you”!!

Now that the new year is here, Anchors arebusy with activities. The Hickory HS Anchorsare helping with the upcoming school craft fairon April 18 to honor deceased faculty and staffmembers.

On the international level, a new youth coor-dinator has been hired, Jack Henson. Jack is re-vamping the Anchor website with a fresh, ener-getic, “user friendly” look. He is also workingwith PI VP Gwen Yarbrough on a new initiative,an Anchor Advisory Council.

I am honored to have been asked to representour Virginia District. To date, we have had onephone conference and will reconvene nextmonth.

Plans continue for our Virginia District An-chor Convention on Saturday, April 25. Markyour calendars to attend another dynamic day!

How we spend our days is, of course, how we spend our lives.”

As we welcome in 2015, we evaluate the things that are working well and tweak those that need im-provement. Once we have identified what we want to improve, it’s important to consider the possibili-ties, set objectives, and begin working to achieve these goals. The Pilot International Executive Com-mittee and staff are constantly looking for ways to advance our organization, such as refiningcommunications, creating resources, and increasing our membership.

Pilots, please take time to check out the newly revised International Website:www.pilotinternational.org! The website is easy to navigate and has plenty of information to help yourdistricts and clubs stay informed. We suggest that each district and club spend time on the site to be-come familiar with what it has to offer. Please contact Paul Karsti, Pilot International Director ofCommunications, at [email protected] with your news, questions, club photos, and/or arti-cles to be placed on the website and in the Pilot Log.

Let’s continue to encourage our Pilot International Youth to “Be More”. We cannot imagine ourPilot world without Anchor! Life is busy, especially for Anchors. It takes a lot of scheduling and greatefficiency to get everything completed. Anchors want to give back by serving their local, regional, andglobal communities; and we’re making it easier than ever before to stay actively involved with Anchorby presenting our brand new Anchor website: www.AnchorClubIntl.org. This easy-to-use site will nowserve as our comprehensive, central hub for information, forms, handbooks, and other essential An-chor information. Not sure how to get involved? Please take time to email Jack Henson, Pilot Inter-national Director of Youth Services at Pilot HQ at [email protected]. He would love to hear your com-ments, questions and ideas!

Please don’t forget February is the time that we begin to nominate officers at the International, Dis-trict, and Local levels for the 2015-2016 year. There are many qualified leaders within our organiza-tion and it’s important for each of us to encourage them. Nomination materials can be found on thePilot International website or by contacting Bonnie Millirans, Pilot International Club Services at [email protected] for more information.

GIVE TO THE GOAL! February is the deadline for Pilot International Founders Fund Goal forGrants and Scholarships. With each club contributing $250 to the Goal for Grants & Scholarshipsfund, Pilot International is able to fund numerous community projects and empower youth to attenduniversities around the world. Please direct your Pilot International Founders Fund inquiries to LiaSmith at [email protected].

The following email came to me from Peggy Lawof Service Dogs of Virginia on January 24, 2015:

“I wanted to let you know that Pilot was just diag-nosed with a heart condition that had not shown up un-til two weeks ago. She has a malformed tricuspid valveand a slightly enlarged heart on the right side. For thisreason, we cannot place her as a service dog. We are allheartbroken.

I assure you that we will still use the money youraised for us to place another dog with a child on theautism spectrum. In fact, we are getting a one and ahalf year old ‘teenager’ who is being given to us fromone of the guide dog schools and I hope he can takePilot’s place.”

We knew that the money raised and the matchinggrant was going to a worthy organization and I am con-fident that Peggy will keep us informed on the progressof a dog placed with a child on the autism spectrum.

I have asked about Pilot's next placement and if shewas going to be adopted. If possible, I am going to ap-ply to adopt her.

Thank you for your support of this project.

Isle of Wight Pilots PromoteSafety during the Holidays

The Pilot Club of Isle of Wight likes topromote Brain Awareness, but it loves

going a bit further in promoting safety during the holi-days. The Club annually puts up a Pilot ChristmasSafety Tree, which they hope will make the citizensmore aware of the importance of driving safely duringthe holidays.

The Town Council gave the Club permission toerect the Safety Tree near its WELCOME TOSMITHFIELD sign at the intersection of High-way 10 Bypass and Church Street. The Club takespride in this Safety Tree; sometimes, we have beenfortunate enough to have one of our merchants do-nate the tree. The tree is put up and lit with largegreen bulbs to represent the safe driving of the citi-zens of Smithfield and Isle of Wight County. If thereis a fatality, a green bulb is removed and replacedwith a red one. For the past two years, there havebeen no fatalities.

The Club puts an article in the local newspaper toremind the residents of the tree, its purpose, and theimportance of being extra careful during the holidays. The Town and County Police Departments haveeven taken part in decorating the tree from time totime. President Inetha Holmes and the members putthe lights on the tree on November 30, turn it on De-cember 1, and leave it there until January 2, when thelights are taken off and the tree discarded.

The Luncheon PC of Chesapeake initiated two of fournew members at their January meeting. District Governor LindaForbes “did the honors.” Pictured left to right are Nadine Scott, sponsor with new member Shirley Edwards, President MartySmith, Governor Linda Forbes, and new member JanetDomazos with her sponsor, President Elect Mindy Ziegenfuss.Other new members are Ginny Hales and Suella Jones.
