2020 KEYNOTE SPEAKERS
Walmart’s Response to 2020: COVID-19, Civil Unrest and CyclonesLucas McDonald, Director of Walmart Emergency Operations, will share a behind the scenes look at Walmart’s response to COVID-19, Civil Unrest, and the other events that unfolded this year. Lucas will walk through the initial EOC activation as the COVID-19 outbreak began in China and the transition to a fully virtual response that continued through the Civil Unrest and tropical cyclones. He will share what worked well virtually and what they learned, along with the strategy going forward. Lucas will also share Walmart EOC’s unique Emergency Support Function structure and some of the non-traditional ways the ESFs communicate during a crisis. Through this talk delegates should gain a better understanding of corporate crisis management and what opportunities exists outside of traditional emergency management.
LUCAS MCDONALD, Director, Emergency Operations, Walmart Stores, Inc.
Fierce Emergency Management: Navigating the Coronavirus Pandemic in New York CityJune 16th marked the 141st day of activation for NYU Langone Health, a large hospital system in New York City. As NYU Langone’s director of emergency management, McKinney will take you into the epicenter of the recent coronavirus outbreak in the US. He will talk about a never-ending flow of sick patients into his hospitals - “A trickle that turned into a river, the floodwaters rising all though March and April – we didn’t know if we were going to drown.” He will talk about a city inundated with the dead. McKinney and his team had to go back to first principles. They focused on what they were doing and, more importantly, why they were doing it. McKinney will describe his process and the outcomes it enabled as the river of coronavirus patients became a flood. Because the job of emergency managers is to own the disaster, they had to be fierce. They showed a ferocity, a powerful intensity in everything they did. Because everybody always wants us to be nice. But that’s in the normal world. In the normal world, everybody loves the nice emergency manager. But in the parallel universe, they need the fierce one.
KELLY MCKINNEY, Certified Business Continuity Professional Engineer,Assistant Vice President, NYU Langone Health
MAGDA SULZYCKI, MDEM, CEM, ABCP, Supervisor, Grid Emergency Management, Toronto Hydro Electric System Limited (THESL)
Make Lasting ChangeAs Emergency Managers and Continuity Management professionals, we are called upon to promote and implement change that makes our organizations and communities more resilient. But, making meaningful and long-lasting change is challenging. How do we convince our stakeholders to change the status quo? Equally importantly, how do we ensure that the changes we make last? In this session, we will explore the change-making process as it relates to emergency and continuity management with a view to understanding: 1. The obstacles stand in the way of imparting meaningful change; and 2. What we can do as industry professionals to promote necessary change and, ultimately, organizational/community resiliency
It is now more vital than ever before to take a pause from your day-to-day operations and plan 2-days over October 7-8 to keep yourself up to date on the latest best practices, to share your stories with peers and bring that new knowledge into play as the pandemic fight continues. The DEMCON Planning Committee has developed a fantastic Program that includes three renowned Keynotes, 18 diverse concurrent sessions and an interactive Closing Panel with a focus on how the pandemic has changed your profession. Conference Management brings to you super low registration fees with a superior easy-to-use interactive online platform for live access to all Sessions, Networking, Round Table Forums, Demo Stage, Vendor products/services and a fun Happy Hour to close out the first day.
