Virtual Private Networking
• Allows any internet enabled computer to connect to STI network.
• Runs at your local connection speed.
• Must have username and password.
• Becomes primary internet connection.

5. ‘Add’ Button

Select ‘Adapter’ and ‘Add’ button

1. Under ‘Manufacturers’ select ‘Microsoft’
2. Under ‘Network Adapters’ select VPN Adapter and ‘Ok’

2. Select ‘Ok’
3. Insert CD if necessary
4. Expect a reboot

Create a Dial-up Connection
1. Start Menu
2. Programs
3. Accessories
4. Communications
5. Dial-up Networking
6. Make New Connection
7. Select VPN Adapter device and connection name

First time modem setup
1. You may see an area code dialog
2. Enter information and press ‘Close’

1. Enter IP number as shown
2. Select ‘Next’

1. First connect to internet

7. Select VPN connection
8. Enter login name and password
9. Select ‘Connect’
10. Ignore warning messages if present

1. Start Menu
2. Find
3. Computer
4. Enter computer name
5. Open computer when found

1. To activate connection, first connect to internet, then select VPN shortcut
2. Ignore warning messages if present

2. Search
3. For files or folders
4. Search for Computers
5. Enter computer name
6. Open computer when found
VPN Issues
• VPN connections are slow
• May lose net browsing and email while connection is open
• VPN packet protocols must be supported by your ISP
• Must use login name and password while at STI office
• Don’t expect it to work first time
