Five Elements to Steal Your Identity:
Item #2 Contact Info

Make sure email is appropriate
5. Security Question(s)

#3 Summary
Summary vs. Objective
• Objective Statement –Not ATS friendly
• Summary ups skill word count
• Utilize technical vs. soft skills
• Use O*Net description and Talify Interview dashboard to complete
• If your relevant skills, experience or education are hard to find at a glance, your resume might as well be blank. Focus on making your resume easy to read. (maximize the first page of your resume)
• Must include the title of position your are applying for
• When developing a Summary answer these three key components
– What are your key selling points
– What are the critical things you want to accomplish
– What is your end goal
• Craft 4-6 bullet points (paragraph style), shooting for statements that clearly illustrate what you bring to the company over anyone else
#4 - Skills
• Required for ATS
Align skills based on:
• Industry (Entry Level)
• Job Description (Professional)
Rank on Priority
• Technical (hard) skills on left side
• Soft (weaker) skills on right side
• No more than 20 bullets
• Prioritize skills based on job requisition and relevancy
• Do “not” create a laundry list of skills that have no relevancy to the position that you are applying for
• Rank your skills based on relevancy
• Contextualize your skills
– Experience
– Education
– Where you used this skill and how you applied this skill (ups keyword count)
Educational Skills
• If it’s not immediately clear from your skills and experience why you’re applying, the reader will not make the connection between you and the position
• Create a “Relevant Experience” Section– Create sections to highlight your relevant experience based on “titles”
• No more than 3 titles
– Craft 4-6 bullets per title indicating how this experience/education is relevant to the position
– Turn your education/credential into a job
• Projects
• Skills applied
• Presentations
#5 – Experience
Utilize:
Talify
O*Net
MERIC
Indeed.com/resume
10 years on average
• Based on what you accomplished vs. a laundry list of job duties
• Show value, employers are looking for people who can contribute to the companies goals and vision
• No more than 10 bullets per position
• Rank the bullets from most relevant to support you for this position
• Long Term Employed– Where were you 10 years ago
– Start at that point on your resume
– Create “additional experience” section
#6 - Education
• No dates
• No GPA (unless currently enrolled)
• Show how your education applies to transition industry
• No Dates• No GPA unless currently enrolled with
a 3.0 GPA or higher• PhD or Masters only list next lower
degree• Multiple degrees only list degree(s)
relevant to the position • Masters degree and applying for non
Master degree position, list BS/BA first then Masters
• If currently enrolled in a training or educational program “after your Summary” add an additional line (no label) “Pursuing a (degree/certification), (training institution) date (projected)
• Add full certification/degree information under appropriate heading
Veteran Status
• Summary
– US (military branch) Veteran
– Include Security Clearance
• Footer
– MOS/AFSC/Rate/MOC (74D, 88M, etc)
Hiring Dynamics
• Average recruiter / HR / Hiring Manager spends about 31 seconds reviewing your resume (Monster.com 2019)
• 80 percent of jobs are not posted online and 65% of jobs are created for the right hire
• Only about 5 applicants are interviewed for each position (even though 100’s apply)
• Referrals account for about 1/3 of all external hires
Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS)
Note: This information is provided as a general reference and does not apply systemically to all ATS programs or to all
companies as a whole
Questions?
• Have you ever completed an online job application and received “NO” feedback?
• You are asked to upload a resume and you want to attach a cover letter. Does the cover letter become the first page of the resume or the last?
Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS)
• 95% of businesses use this software solution to handle their recruitment process
• The ATS searches resumes for keywords that match the job description
• The ATS sorts through 1,000s of resumes to determine the “best fit” for the position
Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS)
• A Whopping 95% of Resumes Submitted Online Are Never Seen by Human Eyes
• An ATS maps and gathers info from your resume
• The ATS scores each resume based on how well it matches the job description (keywords)
• The ATS ranks the candidates
Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS)
– Potential employees with the highest scores move to the next step in the recruitment process; others are left in the dust
– Your carefully crafted and hand tailored resume is getting reviewed by a “bot”
What are Keywords
• Keywords are words anywhere from one to four words in combination that mean the same thing
– Example
• Resume
• Resume development
• ATS resume development
• Online application resume development
Why Keywords
• Keywords are usually KSA’s companies use to find the ideal candidate
• Most frequently the most important keywords are found within the job description
• Why?
–HR is trained to defer to the job description in determining which candidates are qualified for open positions
Problems With Online Applications
Submitting one can feel like throwing a rock into the middle of the ocean & hoping someone finds it
• Automated response
• No automated response
• Designed to scan 1000’s of resumes per open position based on keywords and criteria
• Not always accurate
• You are eliminated for not having the “right” keywords
ATS: A Weapon of Mass Rejection!
• Up to 80% are determined unqualified within the first 10 minutes of the application process
• Up to 75% of the remaining job applicants are unqualified immediately after hitting the submit button
• At least 85% of the resumes are rejected for using the wrong words
• Up to 40% of the resumes are rejected for using the wrong format
The ATS Looks For A Specific Match
• The ATS will rank the resumes with the most keywords higher based on the job description
• The algorithm then will look for qualifications necessary to be able to perform the job
– Experience | Training | Licenses | Certifications
• The ATS scores and ranks the resumes based on the number or percent of matches within the resume and will rank the candidate
Resume Ranking
• Hiring managers can emphasize the order of magnitude for certain KSA’s
– One skill may have greater weight in whether the candidate is a fit for the position
• Some ATS can calculate dates and determine length of experience for each role
– If the role indicates 6 (six) years the ATS could calculate more or less experience for that role based on your resume
How to increase your resume ranking
• Tailor the content to the exact way the job description is written
– Plural words, abbreviations, and numbers
– Nonprofit or non-profit, three years of experience or 3 years of experience
– Number of years of experience
• If you indicate 10+ years and the employer is asking for 3-6 years you may have just been eliminated
How to increase your resume ranking
• Focus on Hard Skills -- ATS primarily searches for hard skills when it scans your resume
• Soft skill terms (i.e. dynamic, team players, critical thinking, etc.) are not quantifiable
• Consider making soft skills an integral part of your cover letter
• Focus on your technical skills, credentials, position titles, software, etc.
Keyword Clues
• Basic (surface level) skills– Education | Licenses | Certifications
– Length of experience
– Software | Hardware
– Usually more observable and measurable
• Background (technical) – Demonstrated abilities
• Baseline (suppose to have)– Read between the lines for phrases that suggest
something ability an ability to execute a task
Resume Optimization
• Each resume must be customized to the job itself
– Must contain keywords based on the job description, specs and competencies (not internet buzz words)
• Describe yourself based on the companies description of the position not past experience
Optimizing ATS Resumes• Avoid placing your contact information in
the header of the resume
• Resume Formatting
–Do not have lines that run across the width of the page
–Do not use borders around your resume
–A one-inch margin top and bottom
Optimizing ATS Resumes• No PDF’S: use a standard Word document
saved in a .doc format, (File/Save As/Word 97-2003)
• Do Not Use Templates: No Word/resume templates
• Use only web fonts: Ariel, Times Roman, Calibri, Helvetica, Garamond
• One Inch Margin: Optimal for the ATS
Optimizing ATS Resumes
• Customize Each Resume: Regardless of how well-qualified you are, if your resume doesn’t contain the words used by the ATS, the system will not find your resume
• Edit Carefully: The ATS will not recognize misspelled words. If your resume survives the ATS screen, it will next be reviewed by human beings, so it must be error-free
Additional Tips
• No punctuation in your name, such as /,()-
• A single column format -- no tables, multiple columns, or text boxes
• Font size is between 10-12 point
• Use month & year when listing dates (e.g., 06/2013-05/2014)
• Proper capitalization and punctuation -- Both can affect how information is parsed and assigned within the ATS database
Additional Tips
• DO remember that the ATS process has become a compliance process and even if you have a personal connection, your resume will typically need to be submitted to the company’s ATS
• DO remember when applying for a specific position, use that exact title on your resume
• If you are working towards a credential/degree that is a requirement for the position, DO include it on the resume – but make sure you include a phrase such as “Pursuing (name of credential)”
Additional Tips
• Don’t list your credentials (MBA, CPA, etc.) next to your name. Include that information on a separate line
• Don’t include skills you don’t possess in an attempt to “trick” the ATS into selecting you. Anything on your resume needs to be substantiated during the interview process
• Don’t feel the need to create a completely stripped down document. Hopefully your resume will eventually be seen by a human being and it needs to be readable and quantifiable
You Can’t Fool the System
• Some ATS rank by how frequently the keyword is used
– Rule of thumb
• Work your keywords into your resume as naturally as possible
• Summary, Skills, Experience
• Don’t hide keywords
• Don’t repeat keywords several times in a row
– Resume must make sense to the recruiter
Additional Tips
• Trigger Points
– Complete each field on the application
– Some required fields may not have an asterisk
• Salary
–Alpha/Numeric or Numeric
• Date of Birth
–Eligibility
• Dates
– Include the 4 digit year (2018)
Purple Squirrel Questions
• Questions the ATS asks that are unique to the position (and only to the position)
– Do you have experience as a purple squirrel marketing specialist within the ATS industry?
• Yes or No
– If you answered “yes” then… How many years of experience ….
Biggest Mistakes
• Generic resumes and cover letters
• Over the top resumes
• TMI
• Ageism
– It’s not how old your are it’s how up to date you appear
Your Résumé
Last NoteThe term “ résumé ” itself is not ATS
friendly. The ATS does not recognize the accented letters and instead reads it as
“ r?sum? ”
You’re Being Thoroughly Researched
