Virtual Tape Library (VTL) Enterprise EditionThe new generation VTL with clustered deduplication architecture

FalconStor® Virtual Tape Library (VTL) provides high-performance enterprise-level disk-based data protection and integrated global data deduplication to optimize storage and bandwidth utilization. Robust media management simplifies tape management and enhances tape security. Offering multi-node scalability, FalconStor VTL emulates vast arrays of tape libraries, drives, and cartridges, ensuring complete backup transparency. By enabling companies to keep backup data on disk, FalconStor VTL significantly improves the speed and dependability of recovery.

Today’s enterprise data centers manage large heterogeneous environments, often with hundreds of servers running various operating systems and applications, driving several petabytes of data. This makes crucial backup and recovery operations very complex and time-consuming, to the point where some organizations cannot complete backup in the necessary time.

Since 2003, FalconStor Software has been helping organizations address this business challenge with what has become the #1 virtual tape library on the market, proven by major OEMs such as EMC, IBM, Sun, and COPAN, and used by thousands of customers worldwide. With FalconStor VTL, IT professionals are leveraging their original investments in backup infrastructure while improving the quality of their data protection.

High-performance backup and recoveryFalconStor VTL delivers unparalleled performance in the virtual tape storage industry. Using a variety of protocols including Fibre Channel (FC), iSCSI, and NDMP, FalconStor VTL transfers data to and from disk-based virtual tapes at ultra-high speeds for fast backup and reliable recovery. FalconStor VTL supports end-to-end high-speed connections and provides multi-streaming, multi-session backup capabilities. FalconStor VTL connects to multiple backup servers and executes multiple backup jobs simultaneously. FalconStor VTL Gateway Appliances with FalconStor VTL Enterprise Edition software allow IT to use high-performance external storage that can process up to 2,400 MB/second per high availability (HA) pair. Even with compression, each node can sustain more than 2TB/hour. FalconStor VTL has the broadest certification with leading backup applications and tape libraries to maximize compatibility and reliability – enabling true flexible heterogeneous support.

Comprehensive disk and tape solutionToday, many data centers use both disk and tape for tiered storage, driving the need for VTL solutions, as well as better disk and tape media management. FalconStor VTL is a comprehensive solution that not only optimizes backup and restore, it provides data deduplication to maximize resources, data replication from one disk to another, and data export from virtual to physical tape for onsite tape duplication and offsite tape vaulting. Additionally, FalconStor VTL delivers best-of-breed tape management capabilities.

Advanced tape managementTape caching. Set up policies that will trigger the export to physical tape automatically. Files can be restored from either the virtual or physical tape copy. The operation is totally transparent to the backup software so there is no impact to existing policies.

Tape consolidation. Write multiple virtual tapes to a single physical tape of greater capacity. Tape consolidation effectively reduces IT management costs and tape capacity requirements, eliminating wasteful space consumption on new, higher-capacity tapes.

Multi-tape export. Make multiple physical copies of virtual tapes (up to five) for offsite disaster recovery (DR) and/or to meet regulatory requirements. Multi-tape export may be set as part of automated tape caching or auto archive policy; or it can occur during manual export of a single tape. Multi-tape export increases IT productivity, eliminating the need for manual tape duplication or scripting.

Secure by designSince data security is only as good as its weakest link, securing data both on backup media and during any replication process is critical to the integrity of companies’ IT and business infrastructures. FalconStor VTL delivers unique features that provide comprehensive data integrity for securing data storage and migration.

Secure tape export. Secures exported data based on the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES), which allows VTL to export data from virtual to physical tapes in an encrypted format. This prevents unauthorized access to data on the physical tapes.

Tape shredding. Helps IT managers meet security and regulatory compliance requirements. Tape shredding enables users to “destroy” a virtual tape so that it cannot be accessed, even when using disk forensics. Shredding performs a three-pass wipe of the selected virtual tapes using an algorithm specified by the U.S. Department of Defense (Standard 5220.22-M).

Clustered deduplication with linear performance aggregationTypically, more than 80% of the data in a full backup contains duplicate files and folders, especially if protecting the host operating system and applications. This leads to multiple copies of the same

data, taking up valuable disk and tape capacity. The same applies to duplicate data and files across servers and backup jobs (full and incremental) over time. For this reason, FalconStor VTL offers a fully-integrated option for next-generation data deduplication, called FalconStor Single Instance Repository (SIR).

Integrated data deduplication. Deduplication via FalconStor SIR dramatically reduces the storage footprint required for a given amount of data. FalconStor SIR reads the virtual tape cartridges, determines their format, calculates a unique data identifier for each piece of data, and stores a single copy of each unique piece. The original virtual tape cartridge is replaced by a virtual index tape containing the backup metadata and pointers to the unique pieces of data that comprised the original. The virtual index tape is typically only 1/100 the size of the original virtual tape cartridge. Deduplication can be performed concurrently with backup or post-process, after backup completes, to optimize storage efficiency without affecting the backup window.

Clustered architecture. The FalconStor SIR deduplication engine offers 4-node clustering with N+1 failover architecture. Multiple deduplication appliances can be virtualized as one, providing linearly scalable throughput and processing power. If one fails, the standby system (+1) automatically takes over its workload to ensure continuity. The cluster maintains a single hash table, so it does not compromise deduplication ratios.

Global deduplication optimizes bandwidth utilization and DR. Since identical data often exists at multiple sites, FalconStor VTL Storage Appliances offer global deduplication to further reduce network traffic and DR costs. For large organizations with multiple remote sites, FalconStor VTL enables global deduplication for

efficient centralized data consolidation and remote replication for DR through an existing WAN. By replacing traditional manual tape transportation with network transfer and data encryption, FalconStor VTL lowers tape management costs and the risk of data loss. In the process of remote replication, only unique data blocks are replicated to the remote site, reducing network traffic by as much as 95% based on a 20:1 deduplication ratio.

To reduce tape infrastructure costs, many organizations consolidate data from various distributed sites to a central data center. FalconStor VTL supports both one-to-one and many-to-one replication configurations to enable tape infrastructure consolidation at a centralized data site. With standalone FalconStor VTL Storage Appliances deployed at each site, virtual tapes in remote locations can be replicated via WAN to the data center, where FalconStor VTL Enterprise Edition aggregates the data into a clustered repository of globally unique data.

At each site, FalconStor VTL Storage Appliances perform deduplication by checking if the same data blocks already exist at the data center, replicating only unique data. As the centralized data repository grows, FalconStor SIR continually scans for redundant data across all sites. Only unique data is replicated from remote sites to the the data center. Once data is stored at the data center, FalconStor VTL Storage Appliances can then migrate it to physical tape for archival or compliance purposes.

Optional advanced features

Hardware compression Compresses data with add-in hardware card so that more data can be stored on a virtual tape cartridge, saving disk space without adversely impacting VTL performance. Uses high-speed PCI-Express technology.

Host backup support Allows certified backup applications to be installed directly onto the VTL server, increasing performance and eliminating the need for a separate backup server.

NDMP v4 backup support Allows certified backup applications and industry-standard NAS appliances to perform backup to, and restore from the VTL using NDMP v4 protocol over an IP network for both command and data flow.

Replication with encryption Protects against theft of data traveling from one location to another through digital space, encrypts the data stream so that it cannot be deciphered and read by unauthorized persons.

ACSLS shared library support Enables VTL to work with ACSLS-managed tape libraries, allowing the system to share ACSLS-managed libraries between the VTL appliance and backup servers for physical tape operations.

IBM 3494 library support Enables a VTL server to connect to and manage IBM 3494 tape libraries for export and import of virtual tapes to and from physical tapes.

IBM iSeries support (AS/400) Allows IBM iSeries and AS/400 systems to connect to a VTL server.

Tape duplication (multi-tape export)

Allows administrators to make multiple physical copies (up to 5) of virtual tapes simultaneously for offsite storage. This can be part of an automated tape caching, auto-archive policy, or a manual export.

Tape consolidation Allows multiple virtual tapes to be exported to a single physical tape in a physical tape library, minimizing tape usage and enabling the conversion of virtual media with a smaller capacity to physical media with a higher capacity (i.e. DLT to LTO).
