    Visayas selects entries to National Inventors Week

    Publish, Protect and Profit, DG urges Visayan Scientists

    ILOILO CITY, Philippines Intellectual Property Philippines (IP Phils.) Director General (DG)

    Ricardo R. Blancaflor graced the opening ceremony of the 2010 Visayas Island Invention Contests

    and Exhibits (VIICE 2010) last August 12.

    Over 80 scientists and inventors from Regions 6, 7 and 8 joined the contest.

    The Visayas Island invention contest is an elimination/qualifying round for the National Invention

    Contest in November, according to Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Region 6

    Director Rowen Gelonga. Region 6 hosted the event, in collaboration with DOST Regions 7 and 8.

    Todays theme, Filipino Inventions and Innovations: the Way Forward, stands true for our time,

    said IP Phils. Atty. Blancaflor.

    From the creation of an idea, the next step is to protect that idea from unauthorized use or outright

    theft. After protection, commercialization follows, Atty. Blancaflor said.

    Technology Transfer Made Easy

    Atty. Blancaflor pointed out that with the passage of the Philippine Technology Transfer Act of 2009,The transfer of technology or knowledge from the research laboratory to the market will be easily

    facilitated. New technologies developed in research laboratories can now be easily commercialized

    and used by the Filipino public.

    Contest Categories

    The inventions went on exhibit from August 12 to 13 and competed in six categories

    Invention (Tuklas Award); Utility Model; Industrial Design; Creative Research (Likha Award);

    Student Research (Sibol Award) for high school students; and Student Research (Sibol Award) for

    college students.

    and Land Bank Financing

    Sessions

    Technical Sessions on research

    proposal packaging, intellectual

    property rights awareness, patent

    application and procedure,

    DOST-TAPI assistance programs

    for inventors, and Land Bank of

    the Philippines financing program

    for inventors were also conducted.

    The Mindanao invention contest

    was held in Davao City last July

    22-25. Central Luzon and

    National Capital Region will host

    their joint invention contests in Malolos, Bulacan on August 24-26.

    The contest for Southern Luzon will be held in Legazpi City on September 6-8. The Northern Luzon

    cluster will host theirs in San Nicolas, Ilocos Norte on September 14-16. The winners will vie during

    the National Inventors Week in December.
