How it worksMeasuring principleThe fl uid fl ows through a continuous pipe containing two low pressure drop static mixers.

The sensor device measures the pressure drop at both static mixers by means of two differential pressure measurements: P1 and P2.

Pipe flow rate is required to accurately determine the flow regime to which the viscosity is to be calculated. Pipe fl ow rate can be obtained from either an external data measurement or with a flow meter. Flow rate measurement is not integrated in the Viscoline.

From the two pressure drop measurements and the fl ow rate reading, the fl uid fl ow parameters are processed in the system, and the pipe line viscosity is determined.

A temperature reading can be useful for thermal correc-tion, when a reference measurement is required. Such correction requires laboratory thermal characterization or dual measurement.

Typical real fl uids behavior

The rheological behavior of the processed fluids is described by the Power Law model. According to the model, the process viscosity is defi ned by the following formula:

where: Қ is the consistency index, n is the shear thinning index, γapp is the apparent shear rate, μ is the process viscosity.

Consistency index and shear thinning index are calculated following a method based on mixing principles with static mixers in a pipe. This principle is based on power consumption of a fl ow through two sets of static mixers.

Therefore, no fl uid rheological characterization is required prior to installation.

This unique method has been developed, tested and laboratory certifi ed.
