These low vision aids serve much like teleprompters. A camera focuses on a printed page, a distant blackboard, or a computer screen and transmits an enlarged image to a closed-circuit television screen. Using hand and foot controls in some cases, the operator scans the material and adjusts the screen at will-magnifying it further, zooming in on one area, or switching the image polarity to produce a black-on­white or white-on-black view.

Several models of TSI CCTVs are available, from which users can choose configurations that best address their specific needs. A schoolchild can carry one model to class, a computer programmer may use one specially geared for a CRT screen, an armchair reader may be happy with a compact device.
