1. They became popular during the centuries they were being conquered by foreign rulers: the Assyrians, Babylonians, Persians, Greeks and Romans

2. Apocalyptic means revelations. They used codes to describe when good will triumph over evil, when suffering under foreign rulers will end

3. Apocalyptic writing developed because they were being conquer and persecuted for their faith and needed to be hopeful
