SECTION A
READING-20 marks
Q1. Read the given passage carefully (5 marks)
1. At Hardwar, the first thing that hits the eye, is the presence of the Ganga. It
certainly appears to be a big river. But look around and away from the water and
the second thing that will strike the eye, is the amount of constructions on the
riverside and the ghats. There are bridges, pillars, staircases that seem to lead to
nowhere in particular and some of them even seem to stick out of the river water for
no discernible reason! The third thing is the ads for vests and briefs. It seems
almost mandatory, like a dip in the river.
2. To take a dip in the river hang on to the chains that have been fixed to the stairs,
duck and pray that the slush beneath your feet does not make you lose your balance.
That is the holy dip taken by 98% of visitors, in a nutshell.
3. But I am one of the two percent who travel further upriver and camp on white
beaches. I go to sleep in a tent listening to the tinkle of the river. Next morning,
along with a few other campers, we prepare to hand over our lives to rubber
dinghies, paddle muscles and river guides, in a bid to enjoy the white water rafting
sport on the Ganga. White water rafting one of the most religious and extreme
sports around, specially when you encounter one of the rapids on the course. Then it
seems the river wants to convey a message. She does not respect you too much and
seems to tell you that she has complete power over you.

Q. (2) Read the passage carefully [5 marks]
Nobody knows why we sleep, but we all need to. There are no rules about how much sleep
is necessary but the average adult sleeps for 7 hours. About 8% of adults are happy with 5
hours or less and 4% want 10 hours or more. Babies need between 14 to 18 hours whereas
the elderly need less than they did when young but often take a nap during the day.
If you miss a couple of hours of sleep, no harm is done. You may feel tired and
irritable the next day but the body soon makes up for the loss. If you try to stay awake
night after night however, you soon begin to behave strangely. You lose the ability to
concentrate and your judgment is impaired. You begin to imagine strange things and your
behavior becomes deranged.
There are a number of causes for sleeplessness - worry, depression, illness & pain,
noise and light room temperature etc.

SAMPLE QUESTIONS
ENGLISH (COMMUNICATIVE)
READING AND COMPREHENSION
1 Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow:
India has deployed aerial drones over Kaziranga National Park in Assam state in a bid to
protect endangered one-horned rhinos from poachers.
Kaziranga chief NK Vasu said the maiden drone flight on Monday was a “milestone in wildlife
protection”.
The park is home to two-thirds of the world’s one-horned rhino population and also has a large
number of elephants, tigers and other wildlife.
In recent months, rhinos have been killed in large numbers by poachers. Drones and other
successful anti-poaching measures have also been used by the WWF in nearby Chitwan
National Park in Nepal, where the hunting of one-horned rhinos has been drastically reduced.
“The Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) was up in the sky for 15 minutes. It landed safely,” Mr.
Vasu said. “We hope this technology will go a long way in effective surveillance of the park.”
Assam Forest Minister Rockybul Hussain said this was the first time that drones had been used
for wildlife protection anywhere in India.
“The UAVs will deter poachers who will now have to reckon with surveillance from air as well
as on ground,” MrHussain said.
The minister said it would now be possible to keep an eye on the remotest parts of the 480 sq
km (185 sq miles) park.
The drones can fly a pre-programmed route at a maximum elevation of 200m (656ft) for up to
90 minutes, officials say.
They are light enough to be launched by hand and will be able to take images of the ground
below with a still or video camera, they add.
Twenty-two one-horned rhinos were killed in Kaziranga by poachers last year.
In the first three years of this month, 16 rhinos have been killed, triggering a furore in Assam
where the animal is seen as a symbol of regional pride and is also valued for drawing tourists
to the state. A rhino census in Kaziranga last month said that there were about 2,300 of the
animals in Kaziranga. BBC NEWS

From Cocoon Forth a Butterfly
FROM cocoon forth a butterfly
As lady from her door
Emerged—a summer afternoon—
Repairing everywhere,
Without design, that I could trace 5
Except to stray abroad
On miscellaneous enterprise
The clovers understood.
Her pretty parasol was seen
Contracting in a field 10
Where men made hay, then struggling hard
With an opposing cloud,
Where parties, phantom as herself,
To Nowhere seemed to go
In purposeless circumference, 15
As ’t were a tropic show.
And notwithstanding bee that worked,
And flower that zealous blew,
This audience of idleness
Disdained them, from the sky, 20
Till sundown crept, a steady tide,
And men that made the hay,
And afternoon, and butterfly,
Extinguished in its sea.
