GEILO all YearGeilo is a travel destination that you can visit the year round. We get snow early, the winter is snow-secure, and in May, you can both ride a bicycle and go cross

country skiing. «The sea-sons» can be a little longer or shorter compared to other places; therefore, we have made this year wheel. It is simply an icon

that is sectioned for each month. January starts «up at 12 o’clock» in the circle. Welcome to the mountains all year long!

Enjoy the surroundings and, by all means, give us some feedback about your experiences.

Welcome to Geilo and Hol Municipality!

In Hol, we are proud to be a tourist municipa-lity, and put a lot of love and commitment into being a host. Wayfarers and guests have visited our municipality through the ages. They have come from both eastern and western Norway to experience all the good things we have here in the municipality, which is beautifully located between the Hardangervidda plateau and the Hallingskarvet National Park. Geilo is a complete destination for those who wish to experience fresh air, like to keep moving, and at the same time enjoy a modern society with all its delights and privileges. Geilo, as an alpine village, is well-known for its alpine slopes and every conceivable element in the

many terrain parks for both big and small. The attractions in the area also include world class cross country tracks. Here in Geilo, new trails are being developed for cycling, and we are continuously improving the signage and the logistics regarding hiking trails, so that it will be easier to make use of everything around us. Geilo has now received the Award for Sustai-nable Destinations. We are proud of that fact and want you to notice that we stand together to create good experiences for you and yours every time you come here, no matter what time of year. We wish you a pleasant and safe stay. Welcome to the mountains.

Page 5: Visit GEILO Year Around

Under the powerful and majestic Hallingskarvet, with the sweeping Hardangervidda plains in the west, you will find the national park village, Geilo.

Geilo received its status as a natio-nal park village because of its proxi-mity to two unique national parks: Hardangervidda and Hallingskar-vet. The national parks were created to take care of large nature areas; for us, for coming generations, and for nature’s sake. That doesn’t mean that the nature shouldn’t be used! Geilo National Park Village is a good starting point for trips in the natio-nal parks all year round. Everything you need of information about the national parks, accommodations, food service, and equipment can be found in Geilo.

The national park villages are a national initiative to increase the value creation in relation to some of the 44 national parks in Norway. Approximately 10% of mainland Norway is protected as national park, and the areas are to be used for recreation and other activities that don’t harm the conservation values. Five villages around Nor-way have received the status of national park village: Lom, Jondal, Vingelen, Storslett and Geilo. All five form good gateways to several of Norway’s beautiful national parks. Welcome!

Camping LifeThe Geilo region has several alternatives if you wish to use camping as an accommodation alternative.

Geilo’s camping areas can offer everything from the simple to complete luxury. Hallingdal Ferie-park is one of Norway’s few 5-star camping areas. This is camping life in a class of its own, real luxury camping. Doesn’t it sound nice to sleep up in the air, in your own cabin on stilts, and wake up with the birds and a panorama view to the sunrise? The children can romp at the playland, visit the animals on the farm, or play Tarzan at the climbing park.

In Geilo, there are two camping areas: Øen Turistsenter and Geilo Hostel as well as Breie Cabins and Camping. In Hovet, there is Birkelund Camping. If you want accommodations for a reasonable price, these are the right alternati-ves for you. These camping areas are marked by tradition and charm, and are a short distance from the area’s delights. By camping, you can steer your vacation just as you wish, and you can enjoy the quietness of the scenic surroundings.

Terms used to describe local food have changed in the last years. Short-travelled, un-travelled, local food, small scale, and other terms are often used.

Our chefs and food producers are extremely proud of the food they produce. We have cheesemakers, meat processing companies, restaurants that use local food, delicatessens and grocery stores who all offer local food. Everything is produced here in this area. The hotels in Geilo also have access to all this, and many are good at putting this on the menu. The farmers and food producers are an unbelievably important part of your total experience in the area. We hope that you will find time to taste our local wares.

At www.geilo.no, you will find an overview over where you can purchase locally-produced food in Hol Municipality.

Food & Pride

Jarle Rueslåtten and his family make cheese and yoghurt at home on their farm. It tastes unbelievably good; and that’s not so strange, since the cows are entwined with beautiful nature, fresh air, and lush grazing lands. From the beginning of time, the local residents have created their own livelihood by selling self-produced wares in order to survive. It was not unusual to travel both westward and east-ward in order to barter wares. The times have changed, but there are still many who produce products that many people want. Especially when we talk about food. Geilo and the surro-unding areas are no exception. We have many exciting and reputable companies that produce and offer locally-produced food.

How about visiting our 2 cheese factories during your stay? Rueslåtten Cheese Factory in Hagafoss and Hol Cheese Factory along Route 50 (FV 50) in Hol center have both award-win-ning cheeses of a very high quality.

Herlig AS is an offensive company that pro-duces everything from moose burgers, home-baked bread and cakes, to traditional fare

like sour cream porridge, and a distinctive, traditional, savory soup (småmat) with sweet lefsekling. The småmat with lefsekling is party food in Hallingdal, and is recommended as one of many meals during your stay.

Matkrok’n is another, small gastronomical gem, right in the middle of Geilo center. Here you will find most delicacies. They make everything from scratch, and have many of the locally-pro-duced wares in the fresh food counter.

Geilo’s largest grocery store, SPAR, also thinks locally. They have pretty much promised that they will be the best vendor of local food in the region, so they have something for everyone.

We also have bakeries and providers that pro-duce food and baked goods on order. Bardøla Høyfjellshotell is very quality-minded, and they bake and make all of their food from scratch.

Traditionally, Hallingkost is the food they used in Hallingdal, before it became common with «store-bought food.»

In olden times, food was mainly prepared with local ingredients, and the recipes were passed down from mother to daughter. Today, Hallingkost is food for modern people. It is short-travel-led food, mainly produced with local ingredients.

Many of the products are orga-nic, and pure ingredients wit-hout additives are used.

Hallingkost wants to give people experiences with food that they only can get in Hallingdal. Hal-lingkost has, since 2002, built up a network organization over 60 members.

Hallingkost will help improve value-creation for the co-ow-ners, make the locally produced food visible and strengthen Hallingdal as a tourism region. Hallingkost BA will work at the interface between agriculture and tourism. An active and vibrant agriculture is the basis for the future of tourism. Hal-lingkost will facilitate in such a way that you can experience all the fantastic things that are produced and served here in our valley. Here you will find more information regarding the life on summer mountain dairy farms and our food producers.

Pedal ’n’ Roll (Tråkk ’n’ Roll) has as a goal to create growth in Hallingdal through development of the terrain bicycle offer. There are many good reasons to start a regional focus:

The market is growing both in Norway and internationally; and several regi-ons around us are already offensively focusing on developing the terrain bicycle product.

Our network of trails and mountain roads is extensive, the scenery out-

standing, and the infrastructure is good.

Pedal ’n’ Roll is a project by and for terrain cyclists. If you have suggesti-ons or want to contribute to this work, please contact us.

The Navvy Road (Rallarvegen) from Mountain to FjordThe 82 kilometer long Navvy Road is Norway’s most popular bicycle route, and a journey in both majestic scenery and fascinating cultural history.

The Navvy Road is located between Oslo and Bergen. It is possible to bike the entire distance in one day, but calculate two to three days and time for some experiences underway. The most common is to start the journey from Haugastøl, Finse or Myrdal; and the most popular portion of the route is between Finse and Myrdal.

Norway is one of the few countries in the world where one can roam freely in nature. In Hol Municipality, where most of the area is mountainous and uncultivated land, we have a network of passage roads and trails that have existed for several hundred years. A large portion of these are cleared and marked. Here are wide plains and steep, mountain cliffs. Countless possibilities. The choice is yours.

Hallingskarvet / Prestholt Round

At the foot of the mighty Hallingskarvet mountains, and at the entrance to the Hallingskarvet National Park, lies Prestholtseter. The stone steps up Prestholtskaret makes the summit trip a pure joy. The steps are laid with the expert help of Sherpas from Nepal. The Prestholt Round is approximately a 2-hour trip of 6.5 km. This is a great scenic

hike, whether one chooses to experience the sunrise, mor-ning light, dusk, or perhaps the sunset.

A road goes in to the Prestholt-seter from Geilo. The most fit can start the trip from the cen-ter of Geilo, follow the Pilvegen road up to Geilohovda, and further westward passed Gull-steinhovda and Urundberget.

Hiking High and Free

The new stone stairway at Prestholtstien has made it possible for everyone to experience the joy of reaching the top of the Hallingskarvet mountains. It is impressive stonework in real Nepali crafts tradition that was started in 2011 and finished in 2013.

Hardangervidda Mountain Guiding

Hardangervidda Mountain Guiding takes you on hiking trips in the mountain areas around Geilo. Experience the Hardangervidda plate-au’s grandness and mysti-que, learn about plants and animal life in the area, and hear the stories about those who lived here in olden times.

Geilo’s nearest neighbor in the west is the Hardangervidda, Northern Europe’s largest high-mountain plateau and Nor-way’s largest national park. The area is an eldorado for mountain hikers with our without a tent and fishing pole. The Norwegian Tourist Association (DNT) offers a network of well-marked trails and many cabin accommoda-tions. Geilo, and several places along the RV7 highway, are great

starting points for a day trip or a week’s trip «from cabin to cabin.» During the summer, there are buses crossing the Hardanger-vidda plateau, and the Tuva bus drives round-trip Geilo—Tuva Tourist Cabin on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The Hardangervidda plateau is espe-cially important as a habitat for the largest wild reindeer herds in Europe. So bring some bino-culars with you in your rucksack!

This is the perfect round-trip (10 km) that is suitable for the family – on foot or bicycle. From Geilojordet (the yard with ancient buildings) the popular nature and culture trail winds itself around the whole Ustedalsfjorden lake. Information boards underway tell the history of Geilo’s plant and wildlife.

Just over 2 km from Geilojordet, is where Geilo Beach is located. Here there is are great conditions for swimming on warm, summer days. The trail continues on pas-sed the Fekjo Cultural Heritage Park, where the landscape instal-lation, «House for wind drawings and color tones» is very popular with the children. Also in the park are the Fekjo Burial Mounds from the Viking era (dated to about the year 900), an old hay barn, a stable, a very old trail, and an old stone wall. Barely 1

km further on westward, the trip goes over Tuftebrua bridge. The bridge is built in a special log construction and is a true copy of the old, protected bridge from 1884. On the south side, the trail winds up a small, birch-covered hill; and then down again to the lake and back to the center of town via the golf course area in Vestlia. Along the way, there are several fishing spots and rest areas with barbeque facilities—and many fine viewpoints..

Havsdalshovda RoundEasiest to park at the Havsdalen Ski Center. From there a nice trail goes up along the Fjell-heisen lift. Cross the road to Prestholt. The trail goes out to the right (eastward) at the upper part of the cabin hamlet. Sign with Havsdals-hovda Rundt (the sign is laying down). Fine, dry trail and great view when the trail rounds Havsdalshovda toward Geilo, the valley below, Vesle-Budalen and Odnakk. Sparse birch wood down toward Budalen. Then the trail turns westward and the Hallingskarvet mountains show up opposite you. Beautiful view out over all of Budalen and Budalsvatnet pond, Belvat-net pond and Reineskarvet in the distance. At the trail crossing at Snøhovda, you will find the trail that goes to Vestreim at Budalen. Take a left here. A little marshy before the trail conti-nues nice and dry back to Havsdalen.

Tuftelia – langs Eima - Prestholt – mot Urundberget - TufteliaThe trail starts from the parking lot west of Tuftelia (see the sign toward the east outskirt of the lot). Starts with a gravel road up to the railroad track. Here there is a clear and OK crossing with gates on both sides. Then the trail goes steeply up a birch hillside. At the top, the trail divides at a small rest area (campfire area). Turn left here. The trail winds westward in easy terrain, rounds Fjellstølhovda and arrives at the Eima tributary, where the river throws itself into a cascading waterfall. Great sight! The trail continues in nice hiking terrain along the Eima until the river turns westward and the trail continues northward toward the Hallingskarvet mountains until it meets Prestholtvegen road, approximately 500 meters before Prestholtseter.

The trip back partly follows Prestholtvegen road and a nice dirt road eastward approxi-mately 1.5 km. At the sign for Urundberget, take a right. Easy, nice and dry trail on the slopes southward. At the trail crossing just before Urundberget, take a right. The trail now meanders down the hills to open terrain with a fantastic view! It is worth taking a short detour (100 meters) up to Fjellstølhovda. Here is the panorama view: Sangefjell, Geilo, Kikut, Ustedalsfjorden, the whole Ustedalen valley toward the Hardangervidda plateau and the Hallingskarvet mountains. Right afterward, you are back at the starting point of the round, the small rest area. Then go down the steep hill to the parking lot at Tuftelia.

Pilvegen – opp på GeilohovdaOle Slaatta’s road up / Rudolf Olsen’s road down. Pilvegen is no less than a gem that winds itself up to the top of Geilo-hovda (1,080 m. elevation). The trail is well-marked and the sign from the west side of the old Taubane lift building. It follows an old trail upwards until it meets the road to Geilo Panorama apartments. Just before the sloping road, there are some big rocks in the middle of the trail. These could just as well be removed. There is a road that continues on to the yard of the apartments and then meets the trail again at the edge of the birch woods. Here stands the first yellow bench. There are many such benches that have been set out at the best viewpoints. Nice benches, but a little weathered. Follow the signs for Ole Slaatta’s road upward and Rudolf Olsen’s road down again. That makes for a nice round.

By taking the chairlift up from Vestlia, the trip starts already at 1,052 m. elevation. (Outside the chairlift’s opening hours, one can follow the Pariserløypa ski run up to the top.) The trail is well-marked southward to Hakkesetstølen. Nice and dry trail, but quite a lot of rocks; so it smart to wear mountain boots. From Hakkesetstølen, the trail turns westward passed Store Hakke-settjørn pond and Grodalstjørnan pond. Sportfishing is permit-ted here for those who have a fishing license! The terrain is kind of hilly with sometimes a lot of rocks through the sparse birch woods at Grødalen. Then the terrain opens up with a view over many nice ponds. The trail rounds Beinstigtjørn pond before it continues in nice and dry terrain up towards Birgithovda (1,173 m. elevation). Large cairn at the top and view over all the mountains and mountain areas for miles around! Birgitstølen is located just under the top. Further on, in the trail crossing before Øvre Langetjørn pond, the trail turns northward again. Nice trail and easy to walk with the Hallingskarvet mountains right opposite you. Then go down the steep slope toward Tuftebrua and the Ustedalsfjorden Round. Follow this back to Vestlia.

Skurdalsåsen – roundFrom the parking lot opposite the Kikut Fjellstue, follow the cabin road in to the Rundetjørn pond (sportfishing permitted). From here, the trail continues eastward to the trail crossing before Bruslettstølen. Alternativtely, one can park in the center of Geilo, walk over the bridge toward Vestlia, follow Stølsvegen road passed the horse center until the trail takes off to the right (marked with Bruslettstølen). The round at Skurdalsåsen is an easy, nice round just over 1,000 m. elevation. It is recommended to go from Bruslettstølen toward Skurdalen (Skurdals-stølane). The trail turns toward the east and meets the old trail, «Gamle Skurdalsvegen.» This trail is cultural heritage in its own right and a joy to hike! Try a little detour up to the «Soria Moria» cabin by Leirtjørn pond. An idyllic place with a 360-degree view! By the mountain farming hamlet by Nybu, the trail takes off westward where it generally follows the winter route 3.5 km back to Bruslettstølen.

Arctic Fox as Prioritized Species – What Does That Mean?

Alopex Lagopus is the name. How cool is that name? The arctic fox has been critically endangered for many years, and is listed on what we call the Red List over species that can disappear if we don’t take special care of them.

Through a special program, we are working on building up the strain of arctic fox in the Norwegian fauna. In 2015, the arctic fox received a little better protection through a separate regulation as a priority species.

This simply means that we will pay more attention toward it; and we who are respon-sible for the supervision and control, have the

opportunity to show people away if they do anything that might disturb the arctic fox.

Especially during the breeding season, May-J-uly, it is important to leave them alone. If you discover arctic foxes with their young, you are guaranteed close to the den. In that case, you have a duty to leave the area and to minimize any disturbance.

Arctic Fox as Prioritized Species – What Does That Mean?

If the arctic fox is disturbed too much during their most vulnerable period, they might move the kits to a different den. This expo-ses the kits to both danger and unnecessary stress, which negatively affects the number that will survive.

Help us to preserve the arctic fox.

The mother of Arne Næss was one of the first to have a cabin at Ustaoset. Already at a young age, he became strongly attached to the area and the «big» mountain, which seemed to be bigger than anything else—Hallingskarvet. Arne has described the feelings for Hallingskarvet as «overwhel-mingly powerful, towering, solid, stable, basically quiet, self-re-specting—characteristics that I, myself, would very much like to have, but, generally, didn’t.» Even as a 10-year old, Arne was drawn to the large mountain; and as a 25-year old, he realized his dream of living up under the “Skarvet”—in his own cabin, Tvergastein.

Arne Næss was a pioneer and activist in Norwegian nature and environmental protection, as well as a renowned moun-tain climber; who, among other things, lead the first ascent of Tirich Mir in 1950. Through his career as professor of philos-ophy (1939-1969) he contributed to the development of the dis-cipline of philosophy, in general, and the philosophical examina-tion, in particular. Through text books in logic, argumentation theory, scientific philosophy, and the history of philosophy, seve-ral generations of Norwegian students have been influenced

by his ideas.Arne Næss is also regarded as the founder of deep ecology and the eight ecological points. Deep ecology means that man is a part of a whole. All life has an intrinsic value, and not just on the basis of what value it has for man.

What tastes better than self-caught, pan fried mountain trout, simmered in sour cream? Chances are good to get a bite. You can choose between 90 fishing waters and rivers, located from 446 to 1,523 meters elevation.

There are many fishing spots; from small, idyllic ponds to large, open lakes in the mountains, as well as good stretches for fly fishermen at the Holselva river at the very bottom of the municipality. Most waters have trout; but in some cases, there is also char. The fish size is preferably between 100-1,000 grams; but each year, fish up to 3 kg are caught. Fishing is a fine activity for the smallest in the family, and can teach them to appreciate nature. Remember that fishing for children and youths under 16 years is free. More information on fishing can be obtained by contacting the Geilo Tourist

Information or the sports stores in Geilo. The hiking maps over Geilo and Hallingskar-vet mountains show the fishing areas. The sportfishing season starts when the ice melts and goes to September 30th.

Sportfishing is an important part of the Nor-wegian outdoor life culture. In Geilo, you can choose between the fishing possibilities in rivers and mountain lakes.

Fishing is suitable for everyone, and is rela-tively easily accessible—not least here in the mountain municipality in upper Hallingdal.

Happy Fishing!

Fees: Normally, prices for a day-card in the abo-ve-mentioned areas are from NOK 50-70; children under 16 years fish for free.

Fishing Tips

Remember that the ice melts late in the high mountains. Lakes up in the high-alpine areas, like Skorpa and Hallingskarvet, are often not ice-free until way out in July. In addition, if the late summer and autumn have been cold, the fish won’t bite. Concentrate instead on the lakes that are located in more low-lying regions.

Access to nutrients are often limited in the high moun-tains; and, therefore, the water is almost crystal clear. This means that the fish can be easily frightened. Pay attention when you move along the bank (the trout

can be found very close to the shore), and don’t use a heavier line than necessary. If you use a colorful multi-filament, it is a good idea to tie on a leader with a more «invisible» monofilament line.

Lures give consistently the best results, especially in the high mountains. Colors and varieties don’t mean everything—the presen-tations is more important. Herring lures are always effective, because they are long-casting and go deep. In shallower waters, where distance isn’t as important, the traditional spoon lures, wobblers, and spinners are good.

On warm days, with lots of insects on the water surface, the fly imitations could be a good choice. If you aren’t a dedicated fly angler with a fly rod, etc, toss floats and flies work just as well. Variations of the Streaking Caddie almost always work as an all-round fly in most of the lakes in Hol Muni-cipality.

Mild, cloudy weather, with a light breeze, is a good star-ting point for the fish to bite. Don’t be swayed by catego-rical advice and tips. The big ones have a tendency to show up when you least expect them to do so.

A few meters from the edge of a sedge shoal, distinct wake rings are formed. I carefully sneak down to the bank, while the fly rod sweeps back and forth, again and again, swish, swish, swish…

I release the reel, the line shoots faster over the water, while the fly lure falls feather-light down on the shiny membrane. Perfect!

There arises an intense excitement, everything is about the high-flo-ating imitation. I give it a little movement—and then the trout bites! With a reckless behavior, the beast fights around in the free waters. Eventually, the fish finds a place in my landing net, gold-colored with dense, black spots, and with touches of red over the wide body sides.Dette er opplevelser som tilfredsstiller de fleste drømmer en sportsfis-ker måtte ha, opplevelser som prentes så djupt i underbevissthetens

These are experiences that satisfy most of the dreams a sport fisher might have; experiences that impress so deeply in the subconscious archives that we never can separate ourselves from them. The nice thing is that such events don’t necessarily require long journeys to dis-tant skies. It doesn’t have to cost a lot, either.

The episode mentioned happened to me at one of the areas belonging to the Geilo Hunting and Fishing Association, but it could just as easily have happened at many of the other fishing waters where the public has access for general sportfishing in Hol Municipality. All you have to do is turn off the TV, get up off the sofa, and go outdoors!

Fishing License Areas for Eastern Hol Hunting and Fishing AssociationMost of the lakes that the association manages are located within the Hallingskarvet National Park, from Ynglesdalen to, among others, Kyrkjedørsvatna. The lakes are stocked with trout regularly, so the popula-tions are generally good and are relative to the food availability. The flesh quality is usually good with a nice red color.

Fisking License: Can be purchased at, among other places, Raggsteindalen Tourist Cabin, Storestølen Mountain Lodge, Myrland Tourist Center, Statoil Hol and Kiwi Hagafoss.

More Information: Check www.njff.no for information about Østre Hol Jeger- og Fiskeforening

Fishing License Areas for Geilo Hunting and Fishing AssociationThe area consists of, among others, Ustedalsvass-draget river course, which passes centrally through Geilo. From Kikut and westward to Grødalen, we find several good lakes; for example, Store Hakke-set. Above the Hallingskarvet Ski Center, Halletjønn should be named. North for Haugastøl are several alternatives; and last, but not least, a 1-hour’s walk from Tuva Tourist Cabin, Skjerja tempts you with trout around one kilo.

Fishing License: Among other places, diverse sports stores, Geilo Tourism Center, diverse accommoda-tion companies.

More information: Under the portal, www.njff.no, you will find information regarding Geilo Jeger- og Fiskerforening.

BudalsvatnetThe lake lies idyllically beside the Budalsvegen road with fantastic view of the Hallingskarvet mountains. Good population with some cases of large fish.

Fishing License: Payment at fishing license box by the eastern parking lot.

SudndalsfjordenMedium population, sometimes big fish. Notice that parts of the lake are excluded to the public (see the map on the fishing license).

Fishing License: Myrland Tourist Center and Store-stølen Mountain Lodge.

Skorpa Common LandsIn Sveingardsbotn, north for FV50, it is possible to gain access to the high-alpine Skorpa. Steep and, at times, tough terrain to hike in, but several exciting lakes, where the mountain administration has stoc-ked with fish in later years.

Fishing License: Free angling.More information: www.hol-fjellstyre.no

Bakkahellern and Surrounding RegionGeiteryggvatna, Bakkahellertjørnane and Omnsvat-net are located in a fantastic, high-mountain lands-cape. Especially the last-named part of the area, in itself, is well worth a visit. The trout population is variable, but big fish can be found in this river system.

HolsfjordenAlthough the Holsfjorden lake is located close to the FV50 throughout the whole Hol village, it can be a little challenging to find good fishing spots from land, if you don’t have local knowledge. Access to a boat is beneficial. Plentiful trout of fine quality from 350 grams to close to 1 kilo. Larger fish of 3-4 kilo have also occurred. Char is frequently among the catch.

Code of Conduct for Being a Good Host

Based on our work to become a more sustainable destination, Visit Geilo has compiled 10 «sustainability commandments»/code of conduct that we hope will inspire both employees and members of our organization. As an employee and/or member of VISIT GEILO, we urge you to be:

V

You shall do your utmost to be a good host for all visitors to our municipality. To be knowledgeable and well-infor-med is one of many duties for a host. It is permitted to communicate with a twinkle in your eye.

Be proud of your surroundings, what you have created, or what you are a part of in everyday life. Show pride for what you are proud, and tell the world.

Be perceived as credible. Fami-liarity and knowledge is often perceived as credible. Be yourself, and take responsibility for those around you. It will help you to cultivate strength.

Show enthusiasm, and practice to inspire and engage others around you. Everyday life is meaningful from commitment from and to other people.

Be loyal to those whom you need and to those who wish you well. Buy what you need at your local store. Make use of those who are loyal to the common good and common challenges.

Keep up to date with what is happening, so that you can inform those who inquire. It is a shared responsibility that everyone is fully knowledgea-ble at all times.

Be an inspiration to those around you, and be inspired by all that the others do for the common good. Inspiration can come from the smallest thing, and result in it becoming really big.

Do more of the things that make you happy, and do even more of what you think can make others happy.

Talk with people and listen to what they have to say. Take seriously about what they are wondering, and include others in what you do. To feel included is both good and safe.

Think outside of the box, as this often is right on target. Finding solutions to challenges is both fun and extremely useful for those who need a solution there and then.

Winter in Geilo-Norway’s Most Complete Winter Destination

Geilo is a classic winter sport resort, and one of the most complete and popular winter destinations.

With a great terrain, an atmosp-heric, city feeling and lots of skiing possibilities, the area is created for many pleasant win-ter vacation days. Few resorts in Norway have so many accommo-

dation alternatives, activities, and service offers--right in the center. In Geilo, you will find real joy of skiing, where the children are the focus.

Geilo devotes considerable resources to pave the way for everyone who uses the ski facilities. Well-groomed slopes in all categories, efficient ski lifts, ski patrol, and separate areas for the small ones, ensures safe and good ski experiences regardless of skill level. The ski slopes are located close to the center. You can ski down the slopes, take off your skis, and walk right into the stores and restaurants.

Children Love GeiloIn Geilo, children get a good ski experience. We have a well-faci-litated offer for families with children. Nice children’s areas with figures and jumps, lifts and slopes customized for children. Here they can have fun in safe surroundings.

Fun activities for the little ones are organized all winter at the ski facility. Join in on the children’s skiing fairytale, slalom compe-tition and sledding. And why is it that only adults get to go to after-ski? In Geilo, the children have their very own after-ski with barbequing of bread twists on a skewer, and many fun activities.

If the children want some time off from skiing, they can play for a few hours at the Trollklubben day-care facility, together with children from the whole world. A stay at the cozy log house in Geilolia is popular for the young, and gives mom and dad an opportunity to enjoy a few hours together on skis.

Both the World Champi-onships and the World Cup have been organized by Haugastøl. Kiting on snow is full action. More and more people like the experience of using wind power, also on skis; and kite-skiing is the

Hallingskarvet lies majestically and guards over everywhere and everyone. Around the mountain are miles and miles of inviting ski tracks. Let the peacefulness and nature envelope you. Several of the cross country tracks are tied to the Norwegian Tourist Association’s (DNT) marked tracks on the Hardangervidda and Skarvheimen area. In addition, there is a 5-km lighted track at the Geilohallen sports arena. The tracks around the Ustedalsfjorden lake is made for families with children, with information boards about the areas nature and culture.

Geilo is known for its many cozy dining offers in the mountains. These can almost be a trip goal in itself. Some of these are located just a short ski trip away, and work well for those with small children. Others again demand a little longer trip. Common for all of them is that you can come in and warm yourselves while you enjoy somet-hing hot in a cup and real home-baked goods. Read more about our food-service cabins on page 48.

The ski trip doesn’t have to be very long, as a short trip can be just as nice. The terrain

under many of the short trips is slightly hilly and fun, without long and exhausting uphill tracks. Recommended short trips include Ustaoset to Åkerstølen.

The ski-track map can be obtained at the tourist information office and at most of the accommodations providers. If you need to rent equipment, you can do this at one of the ski rentals. Here you can also receive help in waxing your skis so that the equipment doesn’t hinder your trip out on the plains.

Cross Country Summit Trip, Vestlia - Ustetind

This is the ultimate good-weather trip! From Usteting, you can gaze toward the Hardangervidda and the Hardangerjøkulen Glacier—and you get a full overview of the Hallingskarvet.

The trip starts in easy tracks for 2 kilometers to Grødalen. From here, there are a little more demanding tracks over Birgit-hovda to Grønebakken Kiosk and the Red Cross Cabin.

The next stage is 4 kilometers westward to the track that comes up from Ustaoset. Take a left here and get ready for a 2-kilometer climb until you reach the top at 1,378 meters elevation. Wonderful views of the Hardangervidda, Hardangerjøkulen Glacier and Hallingskarvet. Remember to take a picture of the cairn, the view, and yourself.

Round-Trip for Big and SmallThis is an appropriate mountain trip if you are lucky to have children or grandchildren with you. Take the ski bus to Havsdalen, 4 km from Geilo, or drive there in your own car. It isn’t always necessary to wear yourselves out on long uphills; with the Fjellheisen up to Havdalshovda, you start at 1,178 m. elevation. From Havsdalshovda, you go westward, in an easy track and fast tempo, with a wonderful view of Hallingskarvet in front of you.

After around 3 km, the track turns northwest and tips down toward Vestreim Mountain Lodge, innermost in Budalen. Here there is a ski café! Ready to go after a good rest, you just have to follow the Budals track at the north side of the Budalsvatnet Lake, to Vesle- Budalen. Here, the track winds southward toward Havsdalen again. A few kilometers with nice downhills in a light birch forests, the trip ends. Those who count kilometers, can note all of 17 km today!

Winter Joy for Everyone

Have you had enough of ski slopes, or are most happy without skis on your feet, as we Norwegians are reported to have on when we are born? Geilo has lots of other fun and exciting things to offer. You just have to decide what you prefer.

Dive onto one of Geilo’s sledding hills, try fatbike cycling on snow, or drive your own dog sled over glistening white plains. The climbing park is open every Thursday during the win-ter, and if you like motor action, you can try snowmobiling or drive on an ice track with rally cars.

What about a kicksled or snowshoe trip? Both can be rented at the Tourist Information Office. Guided snowshoe trips can also be organized.

When the evening decends upon Geilo, there isn’t anything nicer than going on a sleigh ride. Snuggle under warm pelts and enjoy the experience and the view. If you would like even more of horse activities, you can go horseback riding in the winter woods.

These are the experiences that can give you great joy by just sitting and reading a good book. Or perhaps charge your batteries with a spa experience that gives you energy for a hectic schedule.

For groups and company events, Geilo has several good event providers that deliver everyt-hing you need.

Contact us at [email protected], and we will put you in touch.

SnowshoeingGo on a different kind of trip in the woods, or to a great viewpoint. Snowshoeing has been a beloved mode of trans-portation in Norway. You get totally special experience in fairyta-le-like winter landscape. You can either go alone (several places rent showshoes), or you can go on a guided trip and get new knowledge about the landscape around you, and of what might show up.

SnowmobilesWhether you are very careful or looking for real action, there is a snowmobile activity to suit you. You can join in on tranquil moose safaris, where the nature experience is the focus; or drive on long snow-mobile tracks, where you can really give gas. For those who still haven’t had enough, you can cap it off with drag racing.

Sleigh RidesSleigh rides are the win-ter mountain’s answer to a limousine. You sit under warm duvets and pelts, and experience the winter evening with the sound of sleigh bells, the glow of the torches, and steaming horses. You can, of course, order a mulled-wine stop underway.

Are you looking for speed and excitement, Norway’s longest sledding track at Dagali Mountain Park is an excellent playground. The track is 1,850 meters long and consists of straight speed legs, turns and moguls. Under good conditions, the sleds can get up to a speed of 70 km/h, so you really zoom. In Havsdalen, there is also a sledding slope that is almost as long as the one in Dagali. Here you join in on sled-ding competitions and you and your friends can see who is the fastest.

DogsleddingDrive your own dogsled over glistening white plains. Experience the speed and excitement, in harmony with nature. Dogsledding is an experience that you just have to try. Experienced guides take you on a trip you won’t forget. You can choose whether you drive your own dogsled, or just sit good and warm in the sled. Drive a short or long trip. You can even go on a multi-day trip where you sleep outdoors.

Hivjufossen waterfall is a slightly hidden gem on FV50, which is worth visiting.

Storåne is the name of the river that runs from Strandavatnet and down through the valley along FV50, creating Sudndalsfjorden, Hovsfjorden, and Holsfjorden. Even though the watercourse is regulated, there are some places that are quite nice. Especially wild is where Storåne meets the tributary Hivju by the road, a couple of kilometers before Sudndalsfjorden. There you will find a parking area. Use this to see the river, and go up along the tributary to Hivjufossen waterfall, which you can’t see from the road. It cascades out from the mountain in 2 stages, is a total of 250 meters high, and a wonderful sight, especially during spring flooding. The falls are 1 kilometer from the parking area, but there is a well-marked trail up to a viewpoint close by.

Route 50 is a development project, where we want to lift forward, and make visible, all the fantastic things that you can experience along the FV50 road between Hagafoss and all the way until Western Norway welcomes you. On the way to Aurland and Flåm, there are many great places to stop. You will find eateries, attractions, and many good trip possibilities, both summer and winter. We recommend that you check www.geilo.no or one of our Tourist Informations for an updated map with complete information. In the meantime, we recommend that you take advantage of the nice possibilities that are found along Route 50.
