Welcome to the McCall area, where it is “Always the perfect temperature”—a place where you can find an abundance of entertainment for the whole family, no matter the season. Hot summer days and cool starry nights are what summer in the mountains is all about! Water is the star of the show and whether you are boating on Payette Lake or hitting world class rapids on the river, there is no shortage of opportunities to cool off. On land, five area golf courses, miles of mountain biking and hiking trails, off-road riding and more await. Cap it all off with a fresh scoop of huckleberry ice cream and you have the makings of a fabulous summer day in McCall!
What you may not know is that you are visiting one of the best (and most beautiful) rural communities in the nation. In September 2014, we set out to prove this through our entry into the America’s Best Communities Contest (ABC). And guess what? We have made it through two rounds of competition to become a semi-finalist in the Top 15 (selected from more than 400 communities). This summer we will present our economic development plan to move on to the final round.
It’s summer here in our mountains and we hope you have a safe, relaxing and enjoyable time in one of the best communities in the country…and a soon to be finalist in the ABC Contest!

Its always the perfect temperature in McCall, but there is truly something a little extra-special about summer.Payette Lake comes to life. Restaurant patios open up and recreational activities abound. From water skiing, enjoying the beach, to bike riding, there is something for everyone in McCall. In days gone by Payette Lake provided newcomers in the area food supplies and a means to move goods from one end to the other.
Jim Warren discovered gold in the 1860’s in what would Jim Warren discovered gold in the 1860’s in what would eventually became known as Warren, Idaho. During the gold boom Warren was one of the largest settlements in the Idaho Territory at the time. In those days a wagon trail and pack string trail headed north along the west side of Payette Lake moving supplies to the gold mines and outlying areas. That trail became what we now know today as Warren Wagon Road. today as Warren Wagon Road.
With ever increasing demands for lumber and mining supplies in the back country the lake route offered larger supplies in the back country the lake route offered larger weight haul and shorter haul time. THE LYDA was one of the early work boats powered by steam transporting from what was known as Lake Port, now McCall, to the north end of Payette Lake, reloading here on wagons and pack strings to head for the gold bearing mines farther north.
THE LYDA would haul passengers along the route for site THE LYDA would haul passengers along the route for site seeing to help cover the cost of operations. Life was thriving in the area. THE LYDA could be seen hauling passengers and towing a "dancing barge" for local events. After THE LYDA retired a new vessel, the 60' Winston was built to replace her. The Winston took over the haul route until the demand of freight hauling shifted to more economical motorized means. economical motorized means.
In 2012 THE IDAHO started cruising on beautiful Payette Lake offering luxury cruising with a heated lower cabin, restrooms and a full beverage and snack bar on board. To reduce fossil fuel consumption solar panels have been installed on installed on THE IDAHO for enviro-friendly cruising. THE IDAHO is the perfect venue for private events and public cruising on Payette Lake.
Payette Lake has a long history of work boats gracing its shores. THE IDAHO is looking forward to seeing you on the lake this summer to continue this long tradition and share more bits of history.

It is often easy to forget the work and vision of those who came before us. As we walk through downtown McCall with an ice cream cone in hand, we rarely remember that this vibrant town started as a 160 acre homestead. Posting a picture to Instagram of your hike to Louie Lake doesn’t automatically trigger memories of dog sled teams battling the elements to deliver a few letters to the backcountry. New earrings from McCall Jewelry Company don’t conjure images of rugged miners panning for gold in Kennally Creek.
However distant the past may seem, this history played a vital role in sculpting the culture and amenities we know and enjoy today. We invite you to take a stroll down memory lane as we bridge the divide between the past and present. You may be surprised at the secrets that lay just around the corner!

SMITh’S FERRyCougar Mountain Lodge: Home of the Cougar Mountain Lodge, Smith’s Ferry was the location of the very first ferry across the Payette River. In 1919 the first bridge was completed and became a vital crossing station and popular stopping place. The Lodge was constructed in 1938 and opened for business in 1941. Today, you can stay overnight in the unique log rooms, grab a quick bite at the restaurant or find those last minute items at the general store as you head out to recreate. Stop by this summer as the Cougar Mountain Lodge celebrates its 75th anniversary.

CASCAdE, IdAhoKelly’s Whitewater Park: This premier waterpark is situated on a site that exemplifies the history of Valley County. Starting in the 1920s, the sawmill in Cascade was a vital part of the area economy, responsible not only for helping build the robust timber industry, but also acting as a catalyst to build the railroad to connect Valley County with the Boise area. The Cascade sawmill changed hands multiple times, eventually ending up as part of the Boise Cascade Lumber Company. The mill was closed in 2001 leaving a large area of riverfront vacant. Enter Kelly’s Whitewater Park. With a vision to revitalize Cascade as a tourist destination, community leaders, along with benefactors Mark and Kristina Pickard, turned the idea of Kelly’s into reality. Today, Kelly’s is celebrated as one of the top whitewater parks in the country. Dive into the fun in your kayak or on your stand-up paddle board. You can also take a leisurely stroll along “The Strand,” a 2.5 mile river trail or cast a line from the beautifully landscaped riverbank or from Rock Island.
For more information: www.kellyswhitewaterpark.com/
Roxy Theater: Opening its doors on July 14, 1939, the Roxy was the most advanced theater in the Pacific Northwest at the time. The original building was constructed for $25,000 and blended old Hollywood glamour with small town charm; a mix that is still present today. A recent renovation has given new life to this stunning movie theater. With state-of-the art digital projection, Dolby 7.1 surround sound and interior renovations including brand new seating and an art deco box office and concession stand, the Roxy is still as elegant as ever. Catch the next big blockbuster hit at this landmark movie theater. Tickets are $8 for adults and $6 for children. We also recommend the “date night” concession package…2 large drinks and a large popcorn for $7!

RoSEBERRy, IdAhoRoseberry: In 1888, Howell T. Boydstun and his family came to the Idaho Territory from Missouri to eventually settle in the township of Roseberry, Idaho, one mile east of Donnelly on Roseberry Road. They traveled by railroad car with everything from stock animals to farm implements. By 1905, Roseberry was a growing town complete with a hotel, two blacksmiths, two stores, a restaurant, butcher shop and logging mill. While the town of Roseberry faded into a semi-ghost town by 1915, many of the original structures from the surrounding townsite are still standing. Tour buildings including the Mahala Blacksmith Shop (built in 1904), the Korvola Cabin (built in 1898) and the Carriage House (built in 1910) as part of the Roseberry museum complex. Roseberry is also home to the Summer Music Festival each July. Bring a picnic and your lawn chairs and enjoy three nights of world class music!
For more information: thesummermusicfestival.com or historicroseberry.com/
doNNELLy, IdAhoSilver Tip Hat Company: The Silver Tip Hat Company is located in the First State Bank building. Originally built in 1907 in Roseberry, the building was moved to Donnelly in 1917 when the railroad was built. Here, Randy Priest creates one-of-a-kind hats made from a 50/50 blend of beaver felt and rabbit fur. Each hat is handcrafted using traditional hat blocks in different heights and sizes. The felt is steamed and the hat block set in place. After the size has been set, the hat is transferred to a crown iron to smooth out the contours of the crown and smooth the felt. Priest still uses a crown iron made in 1899. To add creases and contours, the hat is again steamed and hand-molded into shape. Stop in to see new takes on traditional hats including the buckaroo and western fedora or design a custom creation!
For more information: find the Silver Tip Hat Company on Facebook.
Cougar Dave’s: Dave Lewis was a hunter and trapper who homesteaded on the Middle Fork of the Salmon River. Originally from New Orleans, Lewis joined the Union Army and fought at Vicksburg with Wild Bill Hickock. After the war ended, Lewis narrowly escaped Little Big Horn in 1876 where he was a scout. From Montana, he moved to Oregon then Idaho and worked as a civilian packer during the Nez Perce War. Retiring from military life, Cougar Dave (as he would become known) hunted cougars with his contingent of dogs as a means of income. In 1936, Lewis contracted pneumonia and was transported by ambulance from Yellow Pine to Cascade. Enroute, the ambulance was hit head on by a truck. Lewis died the following day. While Cougar Dave may be gone, his legacy lives on at Cougar Dave’s Restaurant in Donnelly. Try the Bison Burger, locally sourced from nearby Northwood Buffalo Ranch, or the always delicious Double R Ranch Prime Rib.

MCCALL, IdAhoLardo: You may be surprised to learn the place where you are enjoying a delicious hamburger is actually the site of the original settlement of McCall. In 1886, Lardo sprang up as a small gold mining town that boasted two blacksmiths, a stable, a meat market, a restaurant, a harness maker, two hotels and a post office and general store. In addition, the first newspaper in the area, the “Long Valley Advocate,” was located in Lardo. Daily stage service ran between Lardo and Meadows for a fare of $1.75. It is said Lardo got its name when a wagon load of flour and lard overturned and mixed together to create a “lard dough.” While there is no evidence to prove the truth of this event, it does make a great story! Today, the Lardo Grill and Saloon is the perfect stop after a day on the lake. We love the buffalo wings or loaded Lardo fries to start. Choose from a huge menu of burgers and sandwiches then make sure to save room for the hot buttered fudge cake with vanilla ice cream.

Train Depot: The first train arrived in McCall on June 20, 1914. Regular routes between McCall and the Treasure Valley ran Monday, Wednesday and Friday carrying passengers, freight and mail and essentially changing the landscape of McCall. With the ease of train travel, many people from the Boise valley started to make vacation trips to the area. The rail line through the Payette River canyon was well-known as one of the most scenic routes in the United States. The main train depot is still standing today as the last visible evidence of the train service that ran until the 1980s. The historic McCall Depot was moved 100 yards north of Highway 55 and is now home to the Salmon River Brewery and Bistro 45. Hit happy hour at SRB and enjoy a pint of “Buzz Buzz Porter” or the popular “Shiver IPA.” If wine is on your mind, head down to Bistro 45 in the courtyard below and mingle with fellow wine-lovers.

Payette Lake: Hollywood comes to McCall! In the summer of 1939, Spencer Tracy, Robert Young, Walter Brennan and the Metro Golden Mayer crew descended on McCall to film “Northwest Passage” along the shores of Payette Lake. Sylvan Beach Resort, near present day “Charlie’s Garden,” served as headquarters for the film crew while various beaches along the lake and Payette River were transformed into elaborate movie sets. Over 150 movie extras from the local area were cast in the film and paid $5 per day with an extra $5 per day for anyone who had a beard. While little evidence of the movie sets can be seen today, the scenic shores of Payette Lake remain. Spend the day at one of the many public beaches building sand castles, playing Frisbee or enjoying a picnic. We love North Beach off Warren Wagon Road, Ponderosa State Park or Legacy Park right in the heart of downtown McCall.

NEW MEAdoWS, IdAhoPacker John’s Cabin: In 1862, John Welch set out to find a shortcut route between Lewiston and Idaho City to reduce transportation costs. He made it to Little Salmon Meadows as the snow set in. Stranded for the winter, he and his party built a cabin for the winter that would become the mid-point
meeting place for the territorial conventions of 1863 and 1864. By the late 1800s, the site had fallen into disrepair, but continued to be a popular picnic site. The cabin was first restored in 1909 by John Hailey and the Historical Society where it stood until 1920 when a fire swept through the site. It was again rebuilt and Packer John’s Cabin became a state park on March 6, 1951 as part of the Ponderosa State Park system. This historic area now offers camping and biking and hiking trails.

WARREN, IdAhoPolly Bemis: Perhaps one of the most famous names to come from Warren, Idaho is Lalu Nathoy, who would become known as Polly Bemis. She arrived in Warren, a thriving gold mining town at the time, after being sold at the age of 19 to Hong King. There she worked in King’s saloon and dance hall and met her future husband Charlie Bemis. Charlie would later win Polly in a poker game. A consummate gambler, Charlie Bemis was shot in the left cheek during another poker game. When the doctor from Grangeville couldn’t do anything for Charlie, Polly took charge and is said to have cleaned the wound with her crochet hook. After their marriage in 1894, Polly and Charlie moved from Warren to homestead on the Salmon River, which today is known as the Polly Bemis Ranch. Today, Warren is listed as a ghost town although it does have a year-round population. Pick up a walking tour from the Payette National Forest office in McCall and step back in time. The tour will lead you down Warren’s main street, to the Guard Station and school, through the business district, past the Hotel and Dance Hall and more. After the tour, grab lunch at the Baum Shelter (open Thursday – Saturday from noon to early evening).
Head to the Central Idaho Historical Museum in McCall!
Dredge: Warren was one of the first mining settlements in the territory. The first miners came in the 1860s to pan for gold. Underground mines and dredge mining came later, but are the most visible remnants of the booming industry that resided in the area. Today, you can view the steam powered dredge last used in the area in the 1930s. The dredge is partially sunk along Warren Creek, but the old bucket line and upper story can still be seen. The dredge makes for a quick side trip from Warren. Access by car, ATV or UTV.

Step back in time with a short hike to a lost cityBy: McKenzie Christensen
In the early 1900s, the city of Roosevelt, located on Thunder Mountain, was part of one of the largest gold rushes in the country. In 1902, the town boasted a newspaper, two general stores, brothels, a dozen saloons and a post office where more than 5,000 area residents received their mail. One resident described Roosevelt as “a log town with one street and no society.”
On May 30, 1909 heavy spring rains started a slow mudslide that blocked Monumental Creek near the town of Roosevelt. Many residents were unconcerned with the landslide. As the water started to rise, most did not have time to get all of their possessions out. Two days after the initial slide, the blocked Monumental Creek flooded the town forever and created Roosevelt Lake.
Roosevelt Lake
It is said that many residents would go to “fish” in the new lake for their belongings. One story tells of a piano being moved out of a second story window onto a raft. The piano was then moved to higher ground and eventually sold to the Yellow Pine school where it still resides today. For 20 years following the landslide, whole buildings floated around the lake.
Roosevelt Lake is located 18 miles from Stibnite, Idaho. From the town of Stibnite, head northeast on NF-375. Cars are able to make the trip, but ATVs and UTVs also share the road and offer a faster way to access the Roosevelt Lake trail. After traveling 18
miles along NF-375 you will see a trailhead and “River of No Return Wilderness” sign. From here, the hike to Roosevelt Lake is about 1 mile. On a clear day, you can still observe the outlines of buildings and cabins beneath the water and find logs and boards floating at the edge of the lake.

When beach time and your favorite go-to activities start to feel routine, why not try one of these easy, kid-friendly outings for a colorful change of pace?
Parents hear it from their kids all the time, EVEN in a fun-filled place like McCall.
“I’m bored…”
1 . Awaken your Senses at the Farmer’s Market
A stroll through the McCall Farmer’s Market can be a feast for the eyes, nose and of course, your taste buds! Grab a little red wagon to tote the tots and explore the many locally-grown and crafted offerings in this open air market. Open 10 am–2 pm every Wednesday and Saturday from mid-June until mid-October, the Farmer’s Market offers fresh, local produce, flowers and locally produced meats and poultry. The friendly vendors will be happy to talk to your kids and share stories about where and how they grow and raise the food items.
Pro Tip: Have your children ‘ask first’ before touching the vendor’s wares. Many have samples to offer but prefer that little ones look without touching to keep the fresh food clean.
Location: Pine Street, McCall

2 . Catch a True “origin Story” at the McCall Fish hatchery
The McCall Fish Hatchery raises about a million young Chinook salmon annually, which are released into the South Fork of the Salmon River east of Cascade. The fish from the hatchery migrate to the Pacific Ocean and return as adults weighing about 15 pounds and up. You can see the young fish being raised in the hatchery’s raceways, which are located inside and outside, enabling visitors to see the young fish during any weather. From May through September, the hatchery also houses catchable rainbow trout that are stocked in McCall-area waters for anglers. Don’t miss the giant Kodiak brown bear rug in the hatchery’s visitors area.
Pro Tip: The hatchery is open for visitors year round. Catch a self-guided tour from 8 am to 4 pm daily from May through November. During early spring and winter, you’ll want to call (208) 634-2690 to schedule a tour.
Location: 300 Mather Road, McCall

Be a Ranger for a day at Ponderosa State Park
Seek out a hidden Treasure with a Trip to Charlie’s Garden
A family trip to Ponderosa Park is on many visitors’ must-do list, but the park’s Junior Ranger program can bring this special place to life for young people in brand new ways. Offered every Saturday morning from June 18 – September 3, the sessions explore a different outdoor subject each week. Your child will learn about local wildlife, the outdoor environment and can even enjoy a Free Fishing Day June 18. Check the Ponderosa State Park website for a full schedule.
Pro Tip: Children under 6 years of age must be accompanied by an adult, but older kids may enjoy some supervised exploring without mom and dad. Be sure to dress appropriately for the weather, wear closed toe shoes and bring water, sunscreen, insect repellant and a snack!
Location: 1920 N. Davis Avenue, McCall
Location: Finding Charlie’s Garden can be a challenge. From the intersection of Highway 55, head NE on Warren Wagon Road. At approximately 3.7 miles, you will see a wooden sign on the right side of the road.
Tucked in between the hustle of Payette Lake and the bustle of Warren Wagon Road, many visitors have no idea this beautiful garden retreat even exists. High-altitude gardening is a true art form, and this quiet, tranquil spot shows that it’s possible to grow exquisite gardenscapes even a mile above sea level. Created by the famous landscape designer and plantsman, Charlie Davidson, it is maintained by his heirs and offers a colorful refuge from summer crowds.
Pro Tip: Set your odometer and slow down when you get close, the sign can be easy to miss, but this trip is worth the effort!
There is no end to the options when it comes to great hiking in the area, but this hike is a top pick for families because of its easy access and long list of fun ‘distractions’. The hike is labeled as moderate in some hiking books, but many families find it suitable for all but the smallest kids. The hike to the lake is about two miles long with an elevation gain of about 700 feet. The trail climbs slowly until just before the lake where you follow a few steep switchbacks among the rocks. This quick scramble adds to the fun; the stunning alpine lake reveals its beautiful self at the top. Once there, your family can enjoy inspiring views as well as fishing, swimming or poking around in search of small waterfalls, wildflowers, huckleberries and forest critters of all shapes and sizes.
Location: Turn east on Elo Road about three miles south of downtown McCall. Take Elo to Boulder Lake Road. Park your car below Boulder Meadows Reservoir; the trail goes along the north side of Boulder Meadows Reservoir.
Pro Tip: Bring a picnic lunch and a couple of fishing poles. Boulder Lake is open to fishing year-round, limit is six fish per angler. Fishing rules are available where fishing licenses are sold and on-line through Idaho Fish & Game. Local fishing license vendors include Tackle Tom’s in Cascade, The Stinker Station in Donnelly, Ridley’s Market in McCall and Brown’s Mountain Market in New Meadows.

PAyETTE LAKELove AffairWhy our beloved alpine lake leaves a lasting impression . by McKenzie Christensen

Psychologists have long studied the human attraction to water. Studies have shown that exposure to environments with water can improve our mental wellbeing and even improve physical health. But the question remains: why? What makes water, and in McCall’s case, Payette Lake, such an attraction?
While we are not able to tackle the universal “why,” we do have a few ideas about what makes Payette Lake so special.
First and foremost, Payette Lake is the centerpiece of activity in McCall. Whether you are swimming, sailing, waterskiing, jet skiing, canoeing, kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding or boating, the lake offers endless activities to keep the family entertained.
Yet despite the limitless recreation offered by the lake, the most memorable attribute of Payette Lake seems to be its beauty. Ray Dupree, long-time owner of former Payette Lake Cruises says, “I have toured people from all over the world and the one thing that they remember from their vacation is the beauty of Payette Lake.”
Dupree grew up in Houston, Texas and after graduating from college, spent time in the Marines as a pilot. From there, he transitioned to commercial airlines, flying the Seattle to Tokyo route for American Airlines for many years. Fifteen years ago, he made McCall his home and dedicated his summers to taking tourists and locals alike on scenic cruises around Payette Lake.
During his time on the water, Dupree, an avid historian, gathered stories, tid-bits and local gossip about some of the unique features around the lake to share with his guests. “Everybody loves the lake and the more I can tell them about the history, the more they appreciate it,” says Dupree.
Dupree graciously shared some of his favorite Payette Lake lore and landmarks, laughing as he confesses poetic license may have been used in the telling.
35
Statue of Liberty: Yard art can be seen at many of the homes that border Payette Lake; however, one of the most-loved is the Statue of Liberty. During the Fourth of July, the lakeside home where the statue resides is trimmed with American flags and decorated to the nines in red, white and blue. It has become customary for boats passing by the statue to slow and salute Lady Liberty. – photo courtesy of Ray Dupree
Payette Lake Little Mermaid: Peter Johnson, considered by many to be the “steward of Payette Lake,” was one of the engineers in charge of the Bonneville Dam system. He also happened to be a world-class sculptor. This statue is of his granddaughter when she was eight years old and placed in the exact spot she would stop right before jumping into the water. Johnson created the statue as a tribute to all of the women in his life. – photo courtesy of Ray Dupree
Petrified Crocodile: One of the most shocking finds in Payette Lake! This petrified crocodile defied nature and made its home in our high altitude alpine lake where water temperatures rarely reach over 70 degrees in the summer and freezes over in the winter. Apparently we aren’t the only ones who can resist Payette Lake’s beauty. – photo courtesy of Ray Dupree
– courtesy McKenzie Christensen
36
Wildlife: The crystal clear waters of the lake are a haven for wildlife. It is common to see deer, elk and even moose (along the Upper Payette River near North Beach) by the water’s edge. On one boat tour, Dupree and his guests even spotted a black bear swimming in the water by Ponderosa State Park. But perhaps the most common animal to see on Payette Lake is an osprey. These birds of prey mate for life and typically have two chicks per year. If one mate dies, the lone bird does not mate again. Unlike eagles, osprey only eat fresh kill and find most of their food by diving up to three feet into the water.
Bell Point: In the heyday of the gold rush, gold ore from Warren was loaded by wagon and transported back to McCall to catch the train, giving the route its name, “Warren Wagon Road.” Rumor has it that when the railroad shut down, the president of the railroad took the bell off of the steam engine during its last run. That bell now calls a small point near the Simplot estate home. – photo courtesy of Ray Dupree
Sperm Whale Rock: Named for its shape, Sperm Whale Rock is a great place to stop and sunbathe or jump into the water on a hot summer day. Find this small island off the tip of Paradise Point near Shellworth Island in Tamarack Bay. – photo courtesy of Ray Dupree
While last year marked Mr. Dupree’s final lake tour, these special places and stories remain. Coupled with the lake’s beauty and recreational amenities, these unique histories, legends and landmarks are the essence of what keeps Payette Lake in our hearts.

With so many ways to enjoy the water, it’s time to jump in, wade in or dive in!

ThE LEGENd oF
Sharlie, Payette Lake’s resident monster, dates back to the early 1900s. The first reported sighting described a scaly, cylindrical body attached to a stumpy cow-like head hurtling through the frigid waters of Payette Lake. In 1954 after many reports of this mysterious lake creature, The Star-News held a naming contest with a $40 grand prize. Suggestions came in from across the country and a panel of eight judges, including then-governor Len Jordan, selected “Sharlie.”
Regular sightings of Sharlie have been reported over the years, but no official evidence of Sharlie’s existence has been offered up. Regardless, the residents of McCall need no proof to know she (yes, Sharlie is a she) is real. Her legend continues to grow, adding imagination and mystery to the area folklore, as an unofficial symbol of McCall.
Have you been lucky enough to see Sharlie?
Payette Lake is just one way to enjoy the water this summer. The area is home to more than 300 alpine lakes, most accessible by hiking or mountain bike.
ShARLIE
Quick Tip: Find our favorite alpine lake trails in the “Hiker’s Paradise” and “Mountain Biking Trail Tour” Itineraries at visitmccall.org
Want to get out on the water? Rent jet skis, boats and more
from Cheap Thrills Rentals or Mile High Marina. Find a kayak, canoe or SUP for rent at Backwoods Adventures or Gravity Sports (you can also rent SUPs from McCall Sports
Exchange). Home Town Sports also rents skis,
wakeboards, tubes and more to make your afternoon of boating
even better.
Quick Tip: If you are looking for a leisurely cruise around Payette Lake, McCall Lake Cruises is a must! Tour the lake aboard “The Idaho” and sip on a signature “Huckleberry Cruiser” or “Sharlie Temple” (see Sip & Savor on page 16).
Looking to drop a line? We love fishing at Lake Cascade, the fourth largest lake in Idaho. Catch rainbow trout, salmon or small mouth bass. Get the inside scoop on what’s biting at Tackle Toms in Cascade.
Quick Tip: Lake Cascade isn’t just for fishing. We love Tamarack Resort’s waterfront cabana at the Poison Creek recreational unit. Rent a kayak, SUP or boat and enjoy a day on the water.

100 years of our community’s history are vibrantly displayed in 100 different colors of Italian glass in the art wall in McCall’s Centennial Plaza.
Local artist Debra Facchin was commissioned to interpret and feature 32 key events. The result? A curving wall of artwork that flows like a river toward Payette Lake. After nearly 40 years in McCall, she remembers many of the events and called her work on the wall, “a labor of love.”
The events were selected by the McCall City Council with the assistance of the McCall Historical Preservation Commission, City of McCall staff and long-time residents.
Nearly every 1/2 inch mosaic tile on the 100 foot long wall was meticulously installed by hand. After transferring the design in chalk to the wall surface, Ms. Facchin found numerous community volunteers and visitors were eager to help with the mosaic installation over the course of three summer seasons.
McCall Mayor Jackie Aymon’s favorite art wall rendering is Ms. Facchin’s Y2K bug which celebrates the new millennium dawning in 2000. We also love the smokejumpers parachuting into the Frank Church Wilderness area and ‘found objects’ incorporated into the mosaic. These found objects include marbles, a 1936 silver dollar and several horseshoes which came from the excavation of the Centennial Plaza site (which used to be a livery stable). Many objects, like a child’s metal charm, were donated and installed by people who wanted to be included in McCall’s history.
We invite you to spend time as a family in Centennial Plaza, taking a few moments to discuss the historical events on the wall as an engaging multi-generational experience. What will your favorite part of the art wall be?

dININGGet cozy! Our eateries and bistros offer a haven from the brisk weather. Enjoy everything from fresh pastries to locally sourced venison. Cuddle up and sip a hot toddy by the fire or gather your friends at one of our local breweries for some après ski pints. From tasty take-out to casual fine dining, we have something for everyone.
At the end of a hot summer day, we start dreaming of the crisp winter adventures ahead. See what’s in store when the snow flies…
PLAN AHEAD
– courtesy Mallory Haynes
SNoWMoBILERiders of all abilities can find open play areas offering everything from gentle slopes to challenging hillsides that tempt even the most adventurous of the “high-markers.” 544 miles of groomed trails are maintained throughout Valley County making it nearly impossible to take the same route twice.
ALPINE SKIThe hunt for a fresh powder stash becomes a full-time job for many in the winter. With three alpine ski areas, McCall is home to some of the finest Alpine skiing and snowboarding in the Northwest. Want to venture beyond the boundaries? Access over 20,000 acres of snow with a cat ski trip.
NoRdIC & SNoWShoEWhen the sun shines in the winter, powder can play second fiddle to a fresh groomer…a staple for Nordic skiers and something McCall has plenty of. The rolling meadows and challenging hills winding through the trees offers unparalleled options. Want to trek into a winter wonderland? Snowshoes are a great way to blaze your own trail!
WINTER EVENTSThe entertainment heats up in the winter! Start with the Festival of Trees Thanksgiving weekend then cruise right into the holiday season with “Mountain Hollydays.” This two month extravaganza offers everything from wine tastings to shop local deals. In January, celebrate all things winter with the 10-day Winter Carnival.
FAMILy FUNIf cabin fever threatens, get the entire family out to play! Strap on the ice skates and hit up open skate at the Manchester Ice Center or ride up the magic carpet at the Activity Barn to fly down the hill on a snow tube. For a quick sledding adventure, try Legacy Park in downtown McCall. The gentle slope is perfect for the little ones!
