y mother passed away when I was just a little girl. I had a twin sister named Mary Cleo, and another sister, two years younger than us, Gladys. We needed somebody to help my daddy with us; he couldn't handle us very well. [I came from a large family.] The ladies at church told him to send us to the Home in Ruston, LA. He did not do it at first; he did not want to give us up. That shows you right there that he loved us-that he was NOT one to run away from trouble. They put us on the train-no buses back then-put us in the cab with the conductor. Rev. Vaughan [Supt. Robert W. Vaughan] had someone there to meet us at the train. The home was a love- ly home-red brick, three stories high, and held about 200 chil- dren. It was pretty crowded, and all three of us slept togeth- er at first-in one big bed. ifferent floors were called "wards". The second floor was for sleeping-boys on one side, girls on the other. We fussed across the hall at each other, and we girls "held our own" against those boys. Two older girls slept with the younger ones-about 22 little ones. There were single beds and 3/4 beds. The 3/4 beds were used in the smaller children's ward where two slept in one bed. The older children had the single beds. T he second floor had a LONG HALL, and it was used as a method of punishment sometimes. (The Home was next to an apple orchard. I climbed over the fence one day, got me a green apple, and ate it.) Somebody told the matron on me. She made me stand in the hall for three hours; before the three hours was up, she gave me a spoonful of castor oil and nothing to wash it down. That was NOT any fun at all! T he Home had matrons that did various jobs-kitchen matrons, dining matrons, etc. All the children who were old enough were assigned monthly duties on a rotating schedule. Through this method, the girls learned all the housekeeping chores. The boys had work to do-to care for the garden and tend and milk the cows. Girls were assigned to the milk house to take care of the milk and butter. The kitchen matron planned the meals, and some girls were assigned to help her serve. in another-by table. One morning I was standing by a good-looking boy. He looked over at me and said, "There's my girl.See the freckles on her face." And I was so thrilled to beclaimed as somebody's girl. (I don't like those freckles. I stillhave them.) We would march in as soon as everyone wasquiet. Of course it did not take you long to eat because weonly had biscuits, butter, and syrup and a tin cup of milk. Tincups were used because glasses would not last long with 200kids. After breakfast, we went back to our rooms and gotready for school.

The school bell rang at 7:00, and YOU BETTER BE READY.Everyone lined up and marched to school. My twin sister andI were in the third grade, and our teacher was Ms. Jewel Bond. One afternoon she called us to her desk after school and saidshe was going to put us back in the 2nd grade since it had beena long time since we had been in school and we had forgottenwhat we had learned in 2nd grade. We shocked her when wesaid, "Oh, please don't put us back. We are already too old tobe in 3rd grade, and we want to do what we can so we won'tbe so far behind." And to our surprise, she said if that waswhat we wanted, then that was what she would do. Wethought that was so sweet of her. She was a music teacher, too, and taught us all kinds of little songs.

Our teacher for the 4th grade was beautiful. Her namewas Agatha Dodson. One day she asked me what I knewabout brushing hair. I stood to answer, and I said, "You shouldbrush your hair thoroughly every day." And I emphasized theword thoroughly. Mrs. Dodson said, "Oh, what a smart girlyou are! I have never had a child before say thoroughly. " Ifelt so smart after that.

Mrs. J. M. Henry was our next teacher. She was a moth-erly teacher, and she was the preacher's wife. She was sosweet. (I can still see her.) She was the one who wrote thesong for the Home.

The grades only went to the sixth grade at the Home. Thethree teachers came out every day to teach us. The seventhgrade was at Eastland Grammar School. At that time, thatwas the last grade before high school. We had to walk, so weleft at 8:00 to get to school by 8:30. We were in school untillunch (noon), and we would walk back to the Home for lunch.(We always ran because we wanted to have plenty of time toeat.) By 1:00 we were back in school. School lasted until 3:00,and we had to be home by 4:00. We did not want to be late, because we would have to stand in THAT HALL-that was aBOOGER! We were allowed to play until 5:00.

The bell rang at 5:00, and we would go to our rooms, cleanup, and get ready for dinner. At 6:00, the bell rang for dinner. After dinner we could do what we wanted in our rooms untilthe bell rang at 7:00. Then we would go to chapel on the thirdfloor. Rev Vaughan and Mrs. Vaughan (we called her SisterVaughan) would have prayer with us. Their house was acrossthe street. Mrs. Bond played the piano, and we sang songs.Rev. Vaughan would walk up and down the aisle so that hecould be with all the children. He was like a father to us. We

A Day in the Life at MCH

Sundays were always myfavorite days at the Children's Home. It always startedwith our getting up and getting ready for church. We gotto sleep in a little bit later than other days due to itbeing Sunday. But at 7 a.m., our individual alarmswould go off and if we chose to ignore the alarms, Ms.Peggy (Peggy Williams, our house-mom) would comeknocking on the door and make sure you were up andabout. Sunday was the day our cook (Ms. Lonnie) had theday off from work, so breakfast was usually cooked byMs. Peggy or by James (a student at LA Tech that lived atthe house with us).

Everyone would gather around the table for breakfast, and I don't remember conversation being too spirited onSunday mornings at the table. Most of us had stayed uplate the night before watching TV or playing games, andwe usually had a hard time waking up! However, after wewere up and about for a while, with breakfast settlingin, we had chores to attend to such as sweeping, dusting, vacuuming, doing our laundry, cleaning the kitchen, etc.Once our chores were through we would get dressed forchurch and load up in the van.

We attended Trinity Methodist off Interstate-10. Ialways liked the Methodist services.I had been rearedCatholic up until the point I'd entered the Children'sHome, and well, I've been Methodist ever since.I obviouslytook a liking to the Methodist theology. After the services,we would always rush home. There was always a con-test between our house and the CB White House as towho could find the quickest route back to the house andpull in the driveway first.

Lunch needed to be prepared, so we all took turnshelping out in the kitchen. If it wasn't my turn, I waseither playing basketball in the driveway (which I reallywas not good at, although I had in my own mind covincedmyself that I was), or watching television, or walkingaround the circle with other kids from the other houses.

Once lunch was eaten and the kitchen was cleaned,we would head to the pool. I loved the pool! I couldn'tswim or dive, but I loved jumping off the diving board andsplashing the lifeguard or whoever was walking around

Update....MCHFormer Lady Techsters coachLeon Barmore thrilled our kidsin early September with aninspiring talk as if they were inhis "locker room." CoachBarmore, who has four hall-of-fame memberships to his credit, held the youngsters' attentionby giving his "connection"to the Homethrough his aunt,a former house-mother. As a 3rd

and 4th grader, he used to spend the night withher in the "cottage," and the children of the cot-tage were his playmates. The three-timenational champion coach who led the Techstersto 13 Final Four invitations intrigued his audi-ence by telling them of his humble beginningsoff the Farmerville Highway in Ruston. He toldthem how basketball became his interest-on theadvice of his Ruston Elementary School principal whenhe was in the 6th grade. He fast-forwarded themthrough the years to his coaching days. They were priv-ileged to see the first sheet in a Lady Techsters' playbook-four words that must be their priorities in the order list-ed: God, Family, Education, and Basketball. He then pre-sented the six MUSTS if the ladies wanted to continue play-ing ball on his team:• Perform (in everything)• Be on time• Be honest• Put team first• Go to class and perform• Christ must have a uniform on the TeamHis final words tothem was that theyshould "thank Goddaily"-that he haddone so since he hadbeen eleven-years-old.

The Kenyan groupMilele gave animpromptu concertone Saturday after-noon in August. Approximately sixty-five of the MCHyouth were in attendance. Many decisions for Christ weremade publicly following a testimony by Christian (far rightin picture) on "second chances." Rev. Mickey Stringfield,MCH chaplain, and Dr. David Wheeler, Director of ClinicalServices, witnessed the public acknowledgments. Thegroup's appearance was arranged by Dr. Bob Flournoy,Director of Development, and his wife, Patricia.

The first annual OWL Day Championships were held onJuly 28-29. These days were designed to reward the youthof Louisiana Methodist Children's Home for their excellentbehavior and participation during the Summer RecreationProgram. The first day honored the Emergency Shelter andCAB youth; the second, the residential young people.Innovative team games like a Bear, Fish, MosquitoTournament and Ski Races (see picture) provided challenging

entertainment for the young people.Competition between houses was alsorallied through Slip-N-Slide races (seepicture), Watermelon Seed Spittingcontests, and Water Relays. The goalof the OWL staff for each day was tooffer the opportunity for youth and

staff to have a fun-filled, ener-gizing day at the OWL, whereteamwork and good sports-manship were lagniappe. Anadditional attribute of thechampionship days was theinadvertent bonding betweenyouth and staff as theyinteracted in a less struc-tured setting. THANKS TO

ALL WHO MADE THIS EVENT SO MEMORABLE!

D O N O R R E C O G N I T I O NJuly 1, 2004 - September 30, 2004

Thanks again to our extended family for their contributions as well as for honoring and remembering their loved ones.

Perhaps you have wondered how gifts to Louisiana Methodist Children's Home are processed. All gifts are processed through the Accounting Department. A listing of these gifts along with copies of the

appropriate information (checks, matching gift forms, etc.) plus the colored-business-reply or private-donorenvelopes are then forwarded to the Development Department for acknowledgment. All gifts are acknowledgedwith a letter from Mr. Terrel J. DeVille, President/CEO.

There are several options for gifts. For educational purposes, there are three funds: Amy McGuireScholarship, Glenda Stringfield Rogers Memorial Bible, and William A. and Virginia Lomax Marbury EducationalScholarship. Gifts may also be directed to various programs of our agency through sponsorships, such as theOWL Center, Family Plus, etc. Gifts of items and resources other than monetary (such as bulk food items, fur-niture, clothing, vehicles, etc.) are designated in-kind gifts and are acknowledged with a letter and donation formon which the items are listed. It is the donor's responsibility to provide the approximate value to the IRS for taxpurposes.

Another option for ministering not only to our children, but also to individuals and families is ourhonor/memorial program. The honorarium program is designed to honor individuals or groups of "living" ser-vants, thanking them for their contributions in "making a difference" in the lives of so many. A letter is sent tothe donor for his/her tax purposes, and an additional letter is sent to the honoree(s) to inform him/her of thethoughtful gift by stating the donor's name and address, but WITHOUT the amount of the gift. This programoffers a unique opportunity to pay tribute to a person with a minimal amount of fanfare, yet the benefits ofwhich are reflected in the improved lives of children. So may we paraphrase a popular slogan: SAY IT WITHHONORARIUMS!

Memorial gifts are a wonderful way to insure the legacy of a person who has meant so much to others inthe community in which they lived. These donations for the deceased are acknowledged with a letter to the donor(like an honorarium), but the letter of acknowledgment is sent to the families and friends in an attempt to offercomfort. What better way to express a beautiful sentiment of sympathy than to know the gift will give hopeand healing to a child!

For more information about the specific types of gifts, please contact the Development Department at 866-255-5830 (toll free) or 318-255-5575.

Dr. Robert W. Flournoy,Director of Development

Sometimes when I tell an audience what the average costper day to treat a child, someone always asks, "Why somuch?" We receive as fee for services from the Department ofCorrections and the Office of Community Services approxi-mately two-thirds the cost to care for a child for one day.The remaining one-third has to come from contributionsfrom folks like you. It costs approximately $200 per day tocare for a child; in thirty days that equals $6000--a largesum.

Some of our youth come to us as a last resort beforegoing to a detention center. What are the benefits in living atthe Children's Home as opposed to a detention center? Let melist some:

1) Therapy Our kids usually receive 3-6 hours of groupand individual counseling per week. Those with special needsreceive more.

2) School Our on-site Howard School is state accredited. Many of our youth receive their GED. Education is a vitalpart of every youth's daily regimen.

3) Loving Staff - All of our staff are trained in ways todefuse anger in a loving way. Our youth know they are spe-cial and receive nurturing care.

4) Recreation - We have a full-time recreation departmentto teach our youth how to swim, coach them in many sports, and work with them at the OWL (Outdoor WildernessLearning Center).

5) Attend Athletic Events - We have some donors whofurnish tickets for the youth to attend football and basketballgames at Louisiana Tech University. Our youth are chaper-oned by child care workers when they leave campus.

6) Spiritual Healing - Our youth attend church services inour chapel, have Bible challenges, receive their own Bible andsometimes attend church off campus.

7) Clothes - We furnish new clothes for each child.Sometimes when youth enter the Home they come with onlythe clothes on their backs. A few bring some clothes in a plas-tic bag and they are usually worn and dirty. Have youbought clothes lately for a school aged youngster? Today'sprices will get your attention.

8) Medicines - Most of our youth are on some type ofmedication. The cost is spiraling for all of us, youth included. We require three full-time nurses to dispense their daily med-ications.

I could list other benefits, such as friendships, better diet, etc. However, I hope you can see from this article that somethings you cannot put a price on. Remember the children oftoday are our future leaders. Let's give them all a chance to beall they can be.

THEBUZZFROM DR. BOB

Several Ways toRemember LMCHost of us do not want to think about dying,

but guess what? We will die eventually.Remember the old cliché, "death and taxes." Wehave to pay taxes, and we have to die. As the yearcomes to a close, why not consider putting in placeone or more of the following options to rememberthe Louisiana Methodist Children's Home. "I wishI could do more." Those are words that accompa-ny many of the gifts we receive. The truth is thatthere are dozens of ways for friends to "do more"for our future, often at little or no cost to you.

• Have your attorney prepare or update anexisting will to add LMCH as a benefactor.

• Deed your home to LMCH and continue tolive in it.

• Donate other real estate such as a vacationhome, commercial property or a farm to LMCH.

• Give appreciated securities instead of cash.Gifts of appreciated stocks are almost always moretax-wise to contribute than cash. This is becausea gift of appreciated stock generally offers a two-fold tax savings. (See your financial advisor).

• Remember Life Insurance and RetirementPlans. Many individuals have substantial lifeinsurance or retirement plan balances. In somecases these assets total more than is needed for acomfortable retirement, and could eventuallyresult in estate taxes. Consider using these assetsto make charitable gifts after first providing forloved ones using assets that would be taxed morefavorably.

• Gifts of Cash. Tax Wise and Easy. If youitemize, you can probably lower your 2004income taxes simply by writing us a check byDecember 31, 2004. Make sure your envelope ispostmarked by December 31, which will qualifyyour contribution as a 2004 gift even if it is notreceived by us until the first week of 2005. Also, some employers will match your charitable gifts, meaning your gifts are worth even more.

The whole purpose of a gift is a win-win situ-ation for the donor and LMCH.

Great Day in the Morning! What a Great Day! Thank you, Shreveport-Bossier and surround-ing area, for welcoming Louisiana Methodist Children's Home so warm-ly! September 28 is a day we of the staff and children of the Home willnot soon forget.

O ver five hundred early-risers attended a breakfast at The ClarionHotel designed to raise awareness of the plight of children, especiallyLouisiana's children, in today's challenging world. This assembly wastreated to the voices of one of the finest children's choirs around-the RedRiver Children's Choir, under the able direction of Ms. Betty Adkins. These young people presented a moving program despite the earliness ofthe hour.

The gathering was emceed by Randy Ewing, who ably paced thespeakers in respect to the business obligations of those in attendance.Chair

of the LMCH Board, Byrum Teekell, welcomed each and every one, whileRev. William Peeples, Shreveport District Superintendent, reminded thosepresent of the multiplicity of children's situations in his moving invoca-tion. The audience heard remembrances from an alumnus of the Home,"Chick" Childress," as well as stories of some of our children today as toldby Gary Rambin, Director of Residential Services, and Phillip McMillan,Admissions Director, both from the Children's Home. The vision for thefuture was presented by Mr. Terrel DeVille, President/CEO, calling on histhirty-six years tenure at the Ruston Home. Dr. Robert W. Flournoy,Development Director, outlined opportunities for helping children, andRev. Steve Spurlock of Broadmoor UMC, Shreveport, dismissed the gath-ering with a blessing for the day.

Part of the Christmas tradition here at Louisiana Methodist Children'sHome is the service we offer at this special time of the Christian year-a

personally addressed Christmas card from the Children's Home and YOU.We think it part of our ministry to display the contest-winning artwork

of our youth on this annual honorary card. Perhaps you want to pay tribute to business contacts and associates.

What a perfect way to enlighten them to your passion for our children! Some of you may find addressing cards by hand a physical challenge, yet you realize the personal touch is so important. Let us take care of

this duty for you. We would be honored to do so.Send your list of honorees, complete with full addresses and the exact

name(s) you want to appear on the signature line to:

Enclose an appropriate donation to cover the cost of printing and postage. (We purchase Christmasstamps for this mailing, rather than metering the envelopes.)

Make sure your list arrives by November 15. For further information, call the Development Department at 866-255-5830 -or-318-255-5575.

all loved him. He would tell us whatever he needed to say. As hewalked, he would hit the heel of his shoe on the other shoe. (I canhear him now.)

After the prayer time, we had a study hall. Chapel was held in aschool room, and you brought your books to study. Many a night Iwould put my head on my book like I was reading, and I would gosound asleep. By 9:00, the bell would ring. We could go to ourrooms and get ready for bed. Someone was assigned to close thechapel doors at 9:00 so that nothing would be disturbed. This certainyoung man who had claimed me as his girlfriend was to close thedoors one night and turn out the lights. As he did so, he grabbed meand gave me a kiss. That was my first kiss. I was so shocked I couldhardly sleep that night. He SURE ENOUGH was my boyfriend afterthat.

On Saturdays we could play, read, or go to the sewing room andlearn how to sew. Ms. Everett helped me make a striped dress onetime. She helped me get it "just so", and I wore it to school. Ithought I was the "most dressed up" girl in school. Sunday was theonly day you could wear your nice dress. All the clothes were keptin the sewing room except what you had for that week. On Mondayafter breakfast, you went by the sewing room and got a school dress. You wore that dress to school every day that week. On Fridays, youturned in your school dress to the sewing room so it could be laun-dered.

When I was around 12 years old, I got my hand caught in themangle of the laundry. I couldn't get my hand out. Rev. Vaughanheard the screaming and came running. He put his arms around me,and I was begging him to not let them cut my hand off. He assuredme I would keep my hand. The guys had to take tools and pry themangle open. My hand was white, and I knew it was cooked. I lostthe use of my hand.

I graduated from Ruston High and went four years to LouisianaPolytechnic Institute to get my teacher's training. I wanted to be anurse, but could not do that with one hand. By the time I was readyto graduate, my dad had sold our farm and had gone to live with oneof my brothers. I did not know where I was going to live when Igraduated, so I wrote one of my married sisters (who had been niceabout coming to see us), asking if I could stay with her until I founda teaching position. On the day of my graduation, she and her hus-band drove up in a new car. For a person who had had to walkeverywhere, I thought I had "gone to heaven." I did not have any-thing but a box to put my clothes in, what clothes I had. The otherkids at the Home were hanging out of every window as I walkeddown the steps. They would call "goodbye" to me, and I would waveand strut a little like a rooster. Then we drove away. It was not longthat I realized how lonesome I was. We had all been like family, andI missed them terribly.

This tribute to Ms. Erwin emanates from the "rosebud" of herpresence two years ago at the Centennial Celebration for the

Ruston Home. Since that time, Ms. Erwin has continued to commu-nicate with the Development Department and has been an inspira-tion to us all. The poet, Robert Herrick, who penned the opening lineof his classic poem, must have known about "rosebuds" like Ms.Clotele who would grace the lives in future generations.

the pool at the time. I could have spent hours in that pool, butthen again, I DID spend hours in that pool! By 5 o'clock, it wastime to get back to the house because study hour was from 6 to 7. Ienjoyed school, so I liked study hour. Once study hour was over, wewere able to walk around the circle until dusk and visit witheveryone. After dusk, we would go inside and get ready for bed andthen come out and watch television, play games, or listen to music.Bedtime came at different times for us, based on our ages. Ten o'clockwas my time to go to bed on a school night.

Although this was a typical Sunday for us, there was moregoing on than just 'going to church' or 'making lunch' or 'playingbasketball'. It was learning to cook (something I don't think manypeople really know how to do in today's world); it was listening toMs. Peggy talk about how she learned to cook; or Mr. Doug (DougWilliams) talk about playing the piano; or James talk about whathe was doing in college. It was about the experience of growing up.

I was living in a situation that allowed me to see and hear andlearn from so many other people and their experiences in life.Getting to know what other kids had gone through, to see whatthey had endured to get to this point in their life was inspirational.Knowing that through the power of God, and the love of my Mom(my Mom passed away when I was 3), I was safe at the Children'sHome.

S ometimes, as kids, we make things up in our minds because itmakes us feel better. I did that when it came to my Mom. I alwaysthought that she, because she was in heaven and could walk over andsee God, had gone up to God and asked him to guide me away fromwhere I was and get me into the Children's Home. She was obviouslyvery persuasive. I was able to land on my feet and to survivebecause of the Children's Home. If only that same opportunity couldbe given to all those that need it.
