From the Desk of Father Michael Dear Parishioners, On the Solemnity of Corpus Christi, June 3, 2018, Archbishop Sample issued the Archdiocese of Portland Liturgical Handbook. In anticipation of this official handbook, we had begun during the Season of Lent 2018 some changes such as kneeling after the Lamb of God, ringing the bell once at Epiclesis, reminders of how to receive holy communion on either the hands or tongue to name a few. As we near the beginning of the Lenten Season 2019 on Ash Wednesday, March 6, I would like to address another round of liturgical adjustments: The reader will no longer join the procession with the priest and altar servers entering or exiting. Within the Church’s Tradition, candidates preparing for priesthood are instituted as lectors. This office was one of the minor orders. The candidate was entrusted with the special role of assisting in the proclamation of the Word. Furthermore, at Diaconate Ordination, one of the sacred items that are entrusted to the Deacon is the Book of the Gospel. For this reason, the Liturgy envisions that the instituted Lector or clergy (ordained deacon or priest) be part of the procession. During the recitation of the Our Father, holding hands with others or individuals with hands extended out-wardly will be replaced with the posture of standing upright with hands folded. The priest presider repre-senting the Spiritual Leader of Prayer with arms extended in the orans position leads the congregation in prayer and as a sign of unity the faithful join in prayer with hands folded. During the Sign of Peace, it is appropriate to make a gesture of charity with a handshake or embrace to the person next to you. It is not time to socialize or make small talk with the people near you or across another pew. This gesture traces back to the Early Church who was inspired by the words of St Paul to the Corinthians: “Greet one another with a holy kiss” (1 Corinthians 16:20). The exchange of peace was more than a warm, benevolent feeling towards our neighbor, but rather the peace that comes to us through Christ and the unity and harmony that derives from sharing the Eucharist which we are about to receive in Holy Communion. Much like the changes implemented last Lent 2018, I am sure that it will go smoothly and we continue to gain a greater appreciation and the how, the why, and the what we do to offer God our praise, adoration, reverence, and worship. Blessings. Fr. Michael

Be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him,

we humbly pray; and do Thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host by the Divine

Power of God - thrust into hell, satan and all the evil spirits,

Neighborly Health Notice With the flu and cold season starting, a friendly and neighborly reminder from the Office of Di-vine Worship: If you are feeling ill or suspect that you are ill with a contagious disease, you are not bound by the Sunday Mass obligation, but instead are advised to stay at home and return to church when you are well. If you are not feeling well, please consider: 1) not holding hands during the Our Father, 2) not shaking hands for the Sign of Peace as

a smile, nod of the head or bow will suffice, and

3) refrain from receiving from the chalice and receive the host during Holy Commun-ion
