900 Aussteller aus aller Welt zeigen in fünf Hallen Neuheiten aus Analy-

tik, Labortechnik und Biotechnologie. Analytik erleben – dafür steht

auch das abwechslungsreiche Rahmenprogramm mit Foren, Confe-

rence und Live Labs. Ein Blick auf die Schwerpunkte der analytica 2012.

Analytik für alternative EnergienWissenschaft und Industrie arbeitenderzeit mit Hochdruck an der Umstel-

lung von fossilen auf alternative Ener-gieträger. Verfeinerte Untersuchungs-methoden für die Energietechnikziehen sich daher als Trendthemadurch die analytica. In Brennstoffzel-len beispielsweise dienen Edelmetalleals Katalysator, die als Nanoteilchenauf einem Trägermaterial am wirkungs-vollsten sind. Die Technik eignet sich ideal fürdie schnelle, auch produktionsbeglei-tende Untersuchung von Solarzellen.Für Forscher, die den Wirkungsgradvon Solarzellen mit fluoreszierendenBeschichtungen erhöhen möchten,gibt es zudem speziell ausgestatteteFluoreszenz-Spektralphotometer.

Von der Produktentwicklung bis zurQualitätskontrolleVor dem Hintergrund der boomendenNanotechnologie hat sich auch in derPartikelmesstechnik einiges getan,wie mehrere Aussteller zeigen. Nochrelativ unbekannte Methoden wie dieFeldflussfraktionierung stehen dabeiebenso im Fokus wie verbesserteoptische Geräte zur Untersuchung derTeilchen.

Zur Charakterisierung neuer Materi-alien und Produkte hat die analytica2012 noch mehr zu bieten. Für diePharmaindustrie etwa haben Labswissund Pharmatron Geräte im Programm,die den Zerfall, die Bruchfestigkeitoder die Wirkstofffreisetzung vonTabletten bestimmen. JAS wiederumzeigt ein Instrument, das Thermode-sorptionen und Pyrolysen durchführt,aber auch Verwitterungsprozessesimuliert, etwa von Kunststoffen. Mehrzu sehen in Sachen Polymere gibt eszudem in Halle B1 im Live Lab Kunst-stoffanalytik.

Neue Geräte für die industrielleQualitätskontrolle zeigen Aussteller inden Hallen A1 und A2, darunter eintransportables Rasterelektronenmik-roskop von Jeol für den Einsatz direktan der Produktionslinie und ein Online-Instrument am Stand von FMS Jansen,das Farb- und Höhenschwankungenvon Produkten auf dem Förderbandprüft. Zu den Highlights in diesemBereich zählt auch das tragbare,akkubetriebene Ramanspektrometervon analyticon instruments, daschemische und pharmazeutische

Rohstoffe oder Produkte identifiziert.Das Gerät misst durch transparenteVerpackungen hindurch und erkennttausende Substanzen, sogar in Mi-schungen – einfacher geht es nicht.

Sichere LebensmittelEin weiterer Schwerpunkt der analyti-ca 2012 ist die Lebensmittelanalytik.Die Einrichtung des Live Lab Lebens-mittel- und Wasseranalytik in Halle B2und eine eigene Konferenz-Sessionhierzu unterstreichen den Stellenwertdes Themas.Mit neuen Werkzeugen für den schnel-len Vor-Ort-Nachweis von Keimen oderSchimmelpilzgiften sichern innovativeUnternehmen wie 3M oder R-Biopharmdie Lebensmittelqualität. Zudemerweitert sich der Pool an chromato-graphischen, massenspektrometri-schen und anderen instrumentell-analytischen Methoden für die Nah-rungsmittelkontrolle ständig, wie dieUnternehmen Thermo Fisher Scientific,Bruker Optik und andere Branchengrö-ßen zeigen.

Lebensmittelkontrolleure profitie-ren besonders vom branchenübergrei-fenden Charakter der analytica. InHalle A3 etwa, Treffpunkt der Biotech-und Diagnostikindustrie, können siesich über PCR-Techniken und schnelleDNA-Analytik informieren, die Ehec-Keime, gentechnisch veränderteSojabohnen und vieles mehr schon inSpuren identifizieren.

Daneben finden Besucher hierspezielle Methoden wie den neuenEndotoxin-Nachweis von Hyglos oderden Gluten-Test von Transia.

total of five halls, more then 900 exhibitors from around the world will

present the latest developments in the sectors for analysis, laboratory

technology and biotechnology. Experience analysis – that is also the

objective of the diverse program of related events including forums, the

conference and Live Labs. Take a look at the highlights of analytica 2012.

Manufacturers of equipment for theanalysis, biotechnology and laborato-ry-technology sectors are on the rise.Employment figures and sales aregrowing, and the industry will be at fullstrength when it presents itself atanalytica. These are the best prerequi-sites, not just for everyone attendingthe fair, but also for society. After all, ifthese companies are doing well, theyinvest in new developments – some-thing that we urgently need given thechallenges of the future, like getting agrip on diseases or finally switching toalternative energy sources.

There is no question: Modern analy-sis is what makes technical progresspossible in the first place. Sophisti-cated measuring techniques arebehind every high-tech plastic, everysolar cell and every new medication.This is also how analytica perceivesitself: It showcases solutions, fromproduct development to quality con-trol, and from sample preparation todata evaluation. During the analyticaConference and the forums, the dem-onstrations at the Live Labs and, ofcourse, the exhibitors’ stands, scien-tists, developers and users, equipmentmanufacturers, decision-makers andinvestors from around the world ex-change information and ideas atanalytica.

Analysis for alternative energy sourcesThe scientific and industrial sectorsare currently working hard on switch-

ing from fossil fuels to alternativeenergy sources. That is why elaborateanalysis techniques for power engi-neering are a hot topic at analytica. Infuel cells, for example, precious metalsserve as catalysts that are mosteffective as nanoparticles. Amongother things, scientists look at thesetypes of nanostructured surfaces withthe help of electron microscopes thatare increasingly operator-friendly andeasy to use, as Uwe Binninger, Tescanand other exhibitors will demonstrate.Tescan is even presenting a multi-nanoinstrument that combines elec-tron microscopy, time-of-flight massspectroscopy, x-ray spectroscopy andother techniques. Horiba Jobin Yvon,on the other hand, develops plasmaprofiling mass spectroscopy togetherwith other companies. The technique isideally suited for the high-speedtesting of solar cells, even during themanufacturing process. For research-ers who want to make solar cells withfluorescent coatings more effective,there are also specially equippedfluorescence spectral photometers.

From production to quality controlAgainst the backdrop of boomingnanotechnology, there have also beenplenty of developments in the field ofparticle measuring technology, asseveral exhibitors will demonstrate.The fair also focuses on relativelyunknown methods such as field-flowfractionation as well as improved

optical equipment for examiningparticles. When it comes to character-izing new materials and products,analytica 2012 has even more to offer.For the pharma industry, for example,Labswiss and Pharmatron have equip-ment in their portfolios that can deter-mine the disintegration, breakingstrength and release of active ingredi-ents in tablets. JAS, on the other hand,will have a device on display thatcarries out thermal desorption andpyrolysis, but also simulates weather-ing processes such as on plastics.When it comes to polymers, there willbe even more to see at the Live Lab onPlastics Analysis in Hall B1.

Exhibitors in Halls A1 and A2 willpresent new equipment for industrialquality control including a portablescanning electron microscope fromJeol, which can used directly on theproduction line, and an online instru-ment from FMS Jansen that detectscolor and height discrepancies ofproducts on the conveyor belt. High-lights include a portable, battery-operated Raman spectrometer fromanalyticon that identifies chemical andpharmaceutical raw materials orproducts. The device takes measure-ments through transparent packagingand recognizes thousands of sub-stances, even in mixtures.

Safe foodAnother main theme of analytica 2012is food analysis. Having the Live Lab

for Food and Water Analysis set up inHall B2 and a separate session on foodanalysis underscores the importanceof this topic. Innovative companiessuch as 3M and R-Biopharm are devel-oping new tools for the rapid localdetection of bacteria and mycotoxinsto ensure food quality. In addition, thepool of chromatography, mass spec-trometry and other instrumentalanalysis techniques for testing foodsis constantly growing, as ThermoFisher Scientific, Bruker Optik andother major manufacturers will demon-strate. Food inspectors in particularprofit from the interdisciplinary char-acter of analytica. In Hall A3, where thebiotech and diagnostics industry willbe located, they can gather informa-tion about PCR techniques and rapidDNA analysis that can be used toidentify EHEC bacteria, geneticallymodified soya beans and many othersubstances in traces. Visitors will alsofind information about special meth-ods such as the new endotoxin detec-tion solution from Hyglos or the glutentest from Transia.

As these few examples from theextensive range of exhibits demon-strate, thinking outside the proverbialbox really is worthwhile. analytica willencourage you to do so and featureseverything under a single roof – i.e.know-how for the analysis and biotechindustry, ideas for the laboratory ofthe future and, most importantly,contacts in multiple disciplines.

Premiere: analytica 2012features Live Labs

For the first time ever, analytica invites visitors to enter the real

world of an actual laboratory. On each day of the fair, various Live Labs

in Halls A3, B1 and B2 will host live demonstrations on the topics of

forensics and clinical diagnostics, material analysis with a focus on

plastics, as well as food and water analysis.

The Live Labs promise to be a specialhighlight at the 2012 fair. Laboratorybenches will be set up in Halls A3, B1and B2 where international manufac-turers can demonstrate their productsin actual operation and in a real labora-tory environment. Each day at 10:30,13:00 and 15:30, well known expertswill make plenary presentations thatgive participants an overview of thevarious topics and insights into theirresearch laboratories.

Besides the speakers, applicationspecialists will conduct experimentsand demonstrate how the productsand equipment systems are used inactual practice. The object is to dem-onstrate the entire analysis processas it occurs in routine laboratorypractice as well as extremely specificissues in high-end analysis. Visitors

can also speak directly with the spe-cialists of various manufacturers,discuss specific application cases andhave innovative methods and tech-niques explained.

Tracking down the culpritAnalysis and molecular-biology meth-ods are in dispensable in criminology.To ultimately catch the culprit, analy-sis is a critical element in the searchfor clues. Analysis techniques andmolecular-biology methods are essen-tial not just in forensics, but in clinicaldiagnostics, as well.

Against the backdrop of the LiveLab, interested visitors will receivevaluable insights into the latest devel-opments in doping and respiratory-gasanalysis, ultratrace analysis, and thedetection of pathogenic organisms.

Theprogram of events in the Live Lab onForensics and Clinical Diagnostics isdiverse. One of the highpoints will bean appearance by Germany’s best-known criminal biologist, Dr. MarkBenecke, on the first day of the fair. Inhis presentations, Benecke will give aspectacular demonstration about howDNA analysis can be used to drawconclusions about fictitious crimesand criminals.

How safe is our food?Whether it comes to dioxin in eggs,chicken meat full of antibiotics orpesticides in strawberries and orangejuice: Food scandals continue toplague us in everyday life. To prove theexistence of toxic substances in foodand test and monitor food quality,analysis techniques have been indis-pensable for quite some time. In addi-tion, when it comes to the question ofsafe water, consumers must be able tocount on reliable testing.

If harmful substances get into ourground and surface water, not onlydoes it have negative consequenceson people, the entire environment isaffected. Furthermore, there is no endin sight when it comes to the problemsassociated with estrogen-mimickingsubstances.

The Live Lab on Food and WaterAnalysis in Hall B2 focuses on thelatest hot topics in the life-sciencessector. Experiment presentations willshed light on the entire analysis chain,from taking samples to chemical andphysical separation techniques,molecular-biology methods and datamanagement. It will examine thedevelopment of innovative equipmentsystems as well as the importance ofallergen and GMO detection, mycotox-ins, pesticide and residue analysis aswell as hygiene for consumer protec-tion.

The Live Lab on Plastics Analysisfocuses on polymer analysis andpresents future-oriented analysis andtesting devices that allow laboratoryworkers to take home important impe-tus for daily laboratory tasks, fromsample preparation to instrumentalanalysis, ways to test the effects ofweathering and evaluation techniques.It also features experiment presenta-tions that examine the latest trendsand developments in the sectors forblend analysis, copolymerization andadditivation as well as damage assess-ments.

analytica Finance Day: Finanzierungs-tipps für UnternehmenDer wirtschaftliche Aufschwung hat2010 auch Teile der deutschen LifeScience-Unternehmen erfasst. Umsät-ze sind gestiegen, Venture Capital-Investitionen haben sich erhöht – al-lerdings basieren die Steigerungsratenauf der schwachen Basis des Krisen-jahres 2009. Unterm Strich bleibt dieFinanzierung schwierig. Einer derGründe, warum es manchen Unterneh-men weiterhin an Kapital fehlt, ist,dass immer weniger deutsche Investo-ren im Biotech-Sektor tätig sind. Außer-dem gehen manche Beteiligungsge-sellschaften neue Wege und unter-stützen nur noch einzelne Projekteanstelle ganzer Unternehmen. Vorallem für kleine und mittlere Biotech-Unternehmen bleibt die Finanzierungdeshalb immer noch extrem schwierig.

New impetus for the industryOnce again, new German companies and companies in the life-

science sector will present their innovations at the joint stands of the

German Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWi) and in the Inno-

vationArea. For biotechnology companies, Finance Day is the perfect

place to collect information about the latest financing trends.

In cooperation with Germany’s FederalMinistry of Economics and Technology(BMWi), this is the third time thatanalytica is promoting select Germanstart-ups. New companies can afford-ably participate in one of the two“Made in Germany” joint exhibits inHalls A3 and B2 and present their newtechnologies and business ideas.

At the exhibits of some 20 innova-tive new companies such as Dr. Diet-mar Glindemann, glyxera, inSCREENex,new diagnostics, M2 Automation orPAS-Analytik, visitors can gatherinformation about new cell-screeningtechnologies, innovative gas-analyz-ers that employs a measuring tech-nique that makes extremely highdetection sensitivity and selectivity

analytica Finance Day: Financing tipsfor biotech companiesIn 2010, the economic upswing alsoaffected portions of Germany’s life-science sector. Sales were up, andventure-capital investments increased– although the growth rates were theresult of weak performance during thecrisis in 2009. The bottom line is thatfinancing is difficult. One of the rea-sons why some companies continue tolack capital is that fewer and fewerGerman investors are active in thebiotech sector.

Furthermore, some investmentcompanies are taking a differentapproach and are only supportingindividual projects instead of entirecompanies. That is why financingremains extremely difficult, especiallyfor small and medium-sized biotechcompanies. One way to get out of thered is to collaborate with large pharmacompanies, which continue to search

for partnerships with innovativelife-science companies.

Organized by Going Public Media,the third Finance Day gives an in-depth look at current challenges andsolutions. Practical tips for the life sciencesBecause it was such a great success during analytica 2010, now it

is entering Round 2: the Biotech Forum in Hall A3. The first three days of

the fair will feature exhibitor presentations, and Friday is Finance Day

(see Page 32).

Bioscientists are using refined meth-ods to complete the puzzle of life moreand more, although in many cases, allthey have for their measurements area few cells or a few microliters ofsample. At the Biotech Forum in hall 3,equipment manufacturers will reporton how they deal with these and manyother challenges in the field of bio-analysis.

The Forum actually has severalinnovations in store for protein re-searchers. New England Biolabs, forexample, is presenting the PTMScan, amass-spectrometry technique foridentifying post-translational modifi-cations (PTM) of proteins. ForteBio, onthe other hand, is introducing biolayerinterferometry, an optical biosensortechnique that measures proteins andother biomolecules in just a few micro-liters of sample.

Naturally, rapid improvements inperformance in genetic analysis willalso be a topic at the Biotech Forum,among other things in a presentationby LGC Genomics on high-throughputtechniques for sequencing, SNP geno-

typing and PCR analyses. In addition,bioreagent specialist Bioline willintroduce new monitoring tools for thequality assurance of real-time PCRassays.

Analyzing proteins and nucleic acidsprimarily has one objective: to developnew medicines and diagnostics. That iswhy the Biotech Forum will featureseveral lectures that specificallyaddress the pharma industry. Theprogram of events will cover topicssuch as in-vivo imaging of living cellsand small animals in cancer researchas well as the use of chromatographyto purify therapeutic proteins andantibodies.

Incidentally, analysts who don’twork in the biotech industry will alsofind that taking a look at the BiotechForum program is worthwhile. Two companies, i.e. Post-nova Analytics and Wyatt TechnologyEurope, will report on progress infield-flow fractionation, which sepa-rates and measures both small par-ticles and biopolymers. Tescan isintroducing a multi-nano-instrumentthat combines imaging, analysis and

nanostructuring. Thanks to new devel-opments such as the microliter mea-suring cell for conventional fluores-cence spectrometers or UV/Vis spec-troscopy in microplates being pre-sented at the Forum, even minimumsample quantities are no longer aproblem. The field of instrumentalanalysis is also becoming more effi-cient. EMD Millipore has combined IRspectroscopy with a membrane tech-nology that can be used to detectbiopolymers. In liquid chromatogra-phy, transferring from HPLC to themore efficient UPLC is getting easierand easier, as Waters and Dichrom willexplain. Thermo Fisher Scientific, onthe other hand, will report on high-resolution mass spectrometry tech-niques for food analysis.

However, even high-tech analysiscan only deliver reliable results ifsample preparation and the quality ofthe reagents are right. Nanoparticles in the environmentViewed from the perspective of envi-ronmental analysis, the much-dis-cussed topic of nanotechnology willalso be covered by the analyticaConference. Industrially manufacturednanoparticles are already being usedin dirt-resistant wall paints and manyother everyday products. But whathappens if the tiny particles end up inthe water, soil or air? Do they harm theenvironment? And how can we detectthem there? These questions will beanswered by renowned speakers fromSwitzerland, Austria, Great Britain andGermany in a session on Thursdayafternoon.

It is difficult to find a topic that theconference overlooks: Modern aspectsof food analysis – such as detectingeverything from steroids in pork toodorous substances – will also beexplained in Munich, as will new meth-ods of testing for doping agents andillegal drugs. The perennial issue ofminiaturizing analysis equipment will

be the focus of its own session, as willthe topics of multiplexing techniquesin bioanalysis and powder diffractom-etry in the pharma industry.
