New: Sunshine Coast Trail Passport Program
Launched in December 2013, the Sunshine Coast Trail (SCT) Passport lets hikers collect unique stamps for each of the 12 huts on the Sunshine Coast Trail that they visit. Here’s how it works:
1. Purchase your SCT Passport at Tourism Powell River or a participating businesses;
2. Go hiking on the Sunshine Coast Trail and visit one of the 12 huts along the trail;
3. Take a “selfie,” or get a friend to snap your photo, with the hut in the background;
4. When you return to Powell River, take your photo and passport to the appropriate business (each hut is linked to a specific business) to receive that hut’s UNIQUE stamp (you can also take your photo and passport to Tourism Powell River for a generic stamp); and
5. Once you’ve visited all the huts and received all your stamps, visit Tourism Powell River to receive your certificate of completion, one final stamp on your passport and entry into a draw for some great local prizes!

Sechelt Literally the “land between two waters,” Sechelt offers a wide variety of outdoor activities including some of the best diving in the world, sailing, golf, mountain biking and great winter sports like cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. FYI1700s: Spanish and British explorers land on the Coast Salish-territory shores of the Sunshine Coast.
1791:Texada Island is discovered by the Spanish and nicknamed “Isla de Texada.”
1889: Thomas William “Will” Roberts stakes his claim of land near the waterway that now bears his name: Roberts Creek.

Halfmoon Bay & Secret Cove This romantic getaway is a haven for those seeking quiet solace. Home to some of B.C.’s finest recreation and sightseeing areas, including nearby Smuggler Cove Marine Provincial Park, Halfmoon Bay and Secret Cove are well-known for a talented pool of artisans and craftspeople. 1913: The Patricia Theatre opens in Powell River; today, it’s Canada’s longest-running movie theatre.
Davis Bay & Wilson CreekFamed for its pebbled coastline, Davis Bay features smooth sandbars at low tide and great crab and salmon fishing as well as windsurfing at high tide. Summer brings the annual Davis Bay Sandcastle Competition while locals flock to the frigid waters of the Georgia Strait for the winter Polar Bear Swim. Looking for some retail therapy? Pender HarbourPender Harbour, which includes the seaside communities of Madeira Park, Garden Bay and Irvine’s Landing, is a hub of marine activity, attracting boat enthusiasts and water lovers who’ve dubbed it the “Venice of the North” for its maze of waterways. 1914: Harry Roberts (son of Will) paints a sign on the side of his company’s freight shed proclaiming the area as the “Sunshine Belt.” Years later, Black Ball Ferries renames it the “Sunshine Coast.”
1930s: The Powell River Paper mill becomes the world’s largest newsprint supplier, employing 2,000 workers and delivering paper worldwide.

Saltery Bay Much more than a ferry landing, this is a favoured destination among scuba divers, who search the local waters for exotic marine life and treasures like Canada’s first underwater statue – the bronze “Emerald Princess” in Mermaid Cove. Families can

Ruby Lake Skirting the eastern shore of Ruby Lake, Highway 101 runs north toward Earls Cove – a great spot to enjoy beaches, wildlife and a diversity of wetland birds. Earls Cove & Egmont Egmont lies at the north tip of the lower Sunshine Coast, a short distance from the Earls Cove ferry landing. Savary IslandAccessible by water taxi from the mainland at Lund just north of Powell River and boasting sunny, sandy beaches and some of the warmest waters north of Mexico, this little island is best explored on foot or bicycle. Public camping is limited, so be sure to book a spot in advance if you plan on staying on Savary overnight. DAKOTA RIDGE: A 1,532-acre plateau featuring, thanks to a new expansion, as many as 20 kilometres (12.4 miles) of world-class
cross-country ski trails (classic and skate). You’ll also find 7 kilometres (4.3 miles) of marked snowshoe trails winding through old-growth forests and open areas in a beautiful, subalpine setting offering breathtaking sunsets. TETRAHEDRON PROVINCIAL PARK: Known as the Tet, this area northeast of Sechelt has ample cross-country ski and winter hiking trails. If you wear yourself out from all your snowy adventures, there’s overnight access at four rustic cabins along the way. Please note that while visitors are encouraged to enjoy the park, Tetrahedron is part of a local watershed and users are advised to read all regulations before heading in. env.gov.bc.ca/bcparks
KNUCKLEHEADS: Upper Sunshine Coasters get their winter exercise at this outdoor recreation area near Powell River. With a snowfall season from November to May, activities include tobogganing, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. Suncoaster Trail: Extends south 37 kilometres (23 miles) from Earls Cove on the Lower Sunshine Coast to Halfmoon Bay. Hikers, bikers, horseback riders and ATVers can easily share this wide, relatively flat trail to enjoy great mountain views close to several communities sunshinecoastcanada.com
Sunshine Coast Trail: Canada’s longest hut-to-hut hiking trail stretches for 180 kilometres (112 miles) from Saltery Bay to Sarah Point near Desolation Sound Marine Park, offering breathtaking views of coastal old-growth forests. Weaving up and over mountains, take your pick of short day trips or longer journeys (it’s estimated to take experienced hikers 10 days to complete the trail end-to-end). There are lots of tenting sites and 12 new huts along the way, plus access to local B&Bs and other Powell River amenities. Highlights include the 13-kilometre (8-mile), wheelchair-accessible loop at Inland Lake, 360-degree vistas from Tin Hat Mountain and the magnificent Douglas fir and yellow cedar trees ringing Elephant Lake and Mount Troubridge – the highest point (1,300 metres/4,265 feet) on the trail. New in 2014: the SCT Passport lets hikers collect unique stamps for each of the 12 huts visited along the trail.
