FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear Vintage Affaire Guests,

Welcome to the 36th annual Vintage Affaire! Each year the proceeds from this wonderful event benefit the clients of Vista Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired by providing funds for our services for individuals threatened by loss of independence due to moderate or severe vision impairment. CHEF & PARTNERPETER ARMELLINO

Plumed Horse Restaurant14555 Big Basin Way,Saratoga, CA. 95070408.867.4711

This well-traveled and highly regarded chef is the proud recipient of the Michelin Star designation as one of the area’s finest places to dine. Chef Armellino presents elegant, modern ‘cutting edge’ California Cuisine emphasizing the highest quality ingredients, including sustainably sourced fish and shellfish as well as local and organic produce.

The original Plumed Horse in Saratoga opened in 1952, but new owners, a multimillion-dollar facelift and the addition of Chef/Partner Peter Armellino, have made this into an entirely new restaurant. Its cutting-edge design, with a barrel ceiling, blown-glass chandeliers that change colors, and a three-story glass wine cellar, creates a modern stage for Peter Armellino’s contemporary California-inspired menu.

Named the Best New Restaurant in 2008 by Esquire, Plumed Horse is a culinary standout in a region that boasts its fair share of culinary masters. Having worked alongside many of California’s most notable chefs including: Laurent Manrique at Campton Place and more.

CHEFANTHONY RUTH

The Village Bakery in Woodside3052 Woodside Road,Woodside, CA 94062650.851.5555The Village Bakery

While The Village Bakery in Woodside has only been around for one year, Chef Anthony Ruth’s history with Bacchus Management Group (The Village Bakery’s owner) dates back over seven years.

With no formal culinary training, Ruth worked his way up in the ranks while cooking in a few Bacchus Management Group’s kitchens. He got his start at The Village Pub in Woodside, and then eventually made his way to San Francisco to work at Spruce (both of which are Michelin one-star restaurants). When the opportunity arose to be the opening chef de cuisine at The Village Bakery, Ruth packed up and returned to Woodside where it all began.

Ruth oversees the bustling bakery and restaurant, offering classic California-inspired cuisine. His dishes reflect the seasons and change often incorporating ingredients from SMIP Ranch, a private farm in Woodside that grows ingredients exclusively for Bacchus. His simple, delicious dishes allow his culinary creativity to take center stage. A lover of Italian cooking, Ruth’s homemade pasta dishes and pizzas are a highlight.

Phifer Pavitt Winery in Calistoga is owned by the husband and wife team of Suzanne Phifer Pavitt and Shane Pavitt.  Their debut vintage was the 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon.  The reference to Date Night on their wines is a tribute to Suzanne’s and Shane’s date nights where some of their biggest decisions were made, including the decision to start the winery. The winning bidder will enjoy a tour and tasting for 4 at the Phifer Pavitt Winery.  This lot also includes a magnum of Phifer Pavitt 2017 Date Night Sauvignon Blanc, a rich, exuberant wine with aromas of lemon custard, fruit cocktail, lime sherbet and fresh peaches.  The palate features silky tangerine, honeycomb, lemon popsicle, tangy nectarine and a long, thirst-quenching finish.

The Council, an exceptional Pinot Noir, was created in July of 2005 in the caves of Santa Lucia Highlands’ Pisoni Vineyard.  The wine represents the collective efforts of renowned winemakers and winegrowers, Jim and Bob Varner, Gary Pisoni, Gary Franscioni, Jerry Yang, Kyle Ditzler and Paul Brown.  The wine is a blend of Pisoni clones from the vineyards of Pisoni, Garys’ and Rosella’s.  The Council’s handcrafted wines show ripe, supple, engaging fruit, edged with spice, cedar and oak and are complex, concentrated, balanced and long.  The Council decides the final blend and the Anti-Council works its magic with the rest.  Varner’s Hidden Block Pinot Noir is a very pretty, lifted wine with aromas and flavors of sweet, red cherry, mint, kirsch, toasted spice, earth and floral notes.  This is an understated, gracious Pinot from the Varner Bros, one of their more delicate, acid-driven, expressive wines.  According to Robert Parker, few winemakers do Chardonnay and Pinot Noir better than Jim and Bob Varner.  This estate will continue to be one of the stars of the Central Coast.

Sea Smoke’s Pinot Noirs, a hit since their inception in 1999, have become one of California’s greatest cult Pinots.   The Southings are a delectable mix of red and black fruits commingled with underlying floral notes and a hint of toasty oak on the finish.  The core of the succulent fruit is etched with spice, fine tannins, minerality and a well-integrated acidity.  Sea Smoke Tens show a nose of baked red cherry and red plum dusted with nutmeg, clove and a slate minerality, followed by dried herbs, an earthy mintiness with an underlying base of raspberries, delicious and deeply layered.Landmark Pinots, from a vineyard planted by Richard Sanford in 2001, showcase a fresh, cool-climate character, with a complexity of sweet and savory notes of bright red cherry and currant, spice, tobacco and coffee. Landmark Chardonnays are bright and aromatic, with a complex medley of citrus, apple, toast, oak and mineral notes, with vibrant acidity for a refreshing libation. All of these wines from the Santa Rita Hills are aromatic, rich, balanced, complex, long and very age-worthy.

Napa’s most celebrated mountain appellations, Mt. Veeder, Howell Mountain, Spring Mountain and Diamond Mountain. The limited production wines are 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, fermented with native yeast, bottled unfined and unfiltered for purest expression of place. With minimal intervention in both the vineyard and the cellar, the fruit is left to express itself as normally and eloquently as possible. Lokoya’s Howell Mountain Cabernet is powerful, with explosive dark blue and black fruit, herbs, mint, licorice and firm tannins, in a vibrant, full bodied package. The wines offer lovely drinking now but can age beautifully until about 2030. Duckhorn has been crafting distinctive varietals since the 70s and this Merlot is velvety, soft, rich, round and fruity, with excellent length.

Sojourn 2011 Pinot Noir Ridgetop Sonoma (1) 24 bottles in allDonated by David Wollenberg, an Anonymous Donor, Serl Zimmerman and Steven Lipson and Vintage Affaire

A.P. Vin specializes in handcrafted, vineyard-designate, limited production wines that are packed with deep, rich fruit. Aubert is considered one of California’s cult Pinot producers, making full-blown, hedonistic wines. Freeman has notes of cherry, berry, flowers and spice, in a long, pure juicy package. Fulcrum is a very small operation in Napa, making wines in Anderson Valley, Carneros, Sonoma Coast, Russian River Valley and Chalone. Kutch, a boutique winery, produces balanced and restrained Pinots from the Sonoma Coast, gorgeous, layered, deeply rich and fruity with an exotic character. Kutch has been compared to France’s famed Burgundy producer, Domaine Dujac. Kanzler, located in Sebastopol, makes wines from 20-year-old vines based on Pommard Pinot clones. MacPhail wines are traditional with Old World winemaking techniques and minimal intervention. The wines are bright, structured, deep and concentrated with very forward red fruit. Martinelli has grown grapes in Sonoma County since the 1880s making wines from their family owned and operated estate that are noted for being rich, racy, exotic and flamboyant with intense black fruit. Rivers Marie wines, very limited in production, are hand harvested, never fined or filtered. Fruit takes center stage in these wines, with cherry, berry, black pepper, cranberry, tea and smoke. Peay’s Pinot, a light, sweet, nuanced and gorgeous cool climate wine reveals red cherry, rose petal, mint and kitsch. Sojourn, an artisan winery, makes Pinots in a natural winemaking style that are delicious, full of fresh fruit and flavor.
