DESCRIPTION
I have been a “geek” for many years, being a fan of multiple genres. I took that passion and after years of finding that right style of art expression, laughingiron.com was born. A webcomic that has been in existence for years. Building in the momentum, I was approached to teach a cartooning class. This has expanded over time. Taking that ideal, I found visual literacy the next step, creating a synergy between the two.

WHAT IS…WHAT IS…
VISUAL LITERACY?
Visual literacy?
The Definition: visual literacy Word Origin noun 1. the ability to apprehend or
interpret pictures or other visual images.
MY Definition: Using the untapped creativity in all of us
to see our world in a different light.
My History I have been a “geek” for many years, being a
fan of multiple genres. I took that passion and after years of finding
that right style of art expression, laughingiron.com was born. A webcomic that has been in existence for years.
Building in the momentum, I was approached to teach a cartooning class. This has expanded over time.
Taking that ideal, I found visual literacy the next step, creating a synergy between the two.

The Program in a day This will not be like the prior Cartooning Classes I’ve been teaching. Rather this
challenges the student to visualize their world and translate those thoughts into images
Before each activity, I will demonstrate the drawing Each activity will last no more than 20 minutes ACTIVITY 1: Squiggle Art-Hold your pencil down, close your eyes, and scribble while
counting to 10. Open your eyes use your imagination and see the images in your doodle.
ACTIVITY 2 Word Doodling—I will call out words throughout this activity and the students
would visualize the word and draw it. An example—I say the word “Big”, the student would artistically interpret this Word
ACTIVITY 3 The Visual Alphabet—a Template I’ve created will be passed out (not earlier) to
the students that, when used, and with practice... they can use these shapes to draw anything.
I’ll call out words and using their Visual Alphabet, the students will be able to interpret that word into an image.
The Program extended WEEK 1: Doodle your day—Put into a picture how your day was. Squiggle Art-Hold your pencil down..close your eyes..scribble while counting to 10. Open your
eyes..Use your imagination and see the images in your doodle. WEEK 2 The Stick Figure: I say an action (ex jump, dance, yell) the student draws a stick figure visualizing
that action. Faces…using the scribble method from week 1.. scribble and find a face in your scribble. Taking these 2 steps—combine into 1 figure. WEEK 3 Word Doodling—I would call out words throughout the session and the kids would visualize the
word and draw it. An example—I say the word “Big”..the student would visually interpret the words in BIG Word
WEEK 4 The Visual Alphabet—I’ve created a Template that will be passed out to the students that, when
used , and with practice.. the student can use these shapes to draw anything. I’ll ask the students to either see something in the classroom or get an image in their heads to
draw. This will be the first half of thr session. The second half will be an exercise on face drawing. WEEK 5 Visualize The Phrase I would call out phrases and the students will draw the phrase—on the lines of Pictionary—but
with phrases. If there is a Week 6—this would take all the exercises in Weeks 1-5 so the kids can experiment
by combining these activities
The Visual Alphabet
