Dr. Ann Cavoukian, Commissioner, Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario, spoke about the absence of transparency and accountability in an environment of mass surveillance and Big Data. She explained how the positive-sum framework of Privacy by Design can address these issues and help protect the rights which are fundamental to our freedom.

Claudiu Popa, CEO, Informatica Corporation, spoke about the factors that are creating suspicion around the altruism of every innovative organization, including governments and their online activities. He spoke about how the Internet has lost its lustre and the steps necessary for remediation and rebuilding trust, the real gold of the digital economy. !

Elizabeth Denham, Information and Privacy Commissioner for British Columbia, asserted that transparency is particularly important as we explore the role of big data in the public sector, and the future of mass internet surveillance by national security agencies both inside and outside Canada. She questioned, when it comes to protection of privacy and personal data, who’s in charge, who benefits, how and where do benefits flow, and who gets a piece of the pie?

Woodrow Hartzog, Assistant Professor, Cumberland School of Law, Samford University, Affiliate Scholar, The Center for Internet & Society at Stanford Law School, spoke about the untapped potential in designing for privacy. He explored alternatives to the concept of privacy, such as the concept of obscurity, as a design goal for semi-public contexts like social media. !
