Corrosion resistant powder coated steel frame.
Integrated vibration mounts.
Optional independently controlled vibratory agitator
304 Stainless steel concentric helical overwind auger.
304 Stainless steel, 0.75” to 2.5” diameter solid auger or 1.5” to 2.5” diameter
open helix. (Custom size augers are available upon request)
Water and dust proof variable speed control capable of remote operation..
90 VDC parallel shaft, wash down gear motor.
Optional integrated “Loss in Weight” measurement system.
Expandable accessories and configurations to meet customer’s specific needs.
B. MODEL VMF-15 AND VMF-18 BASIC OVERVIEW
The volumetric screw feeders VMF-15 and VMF-18 from Scaletron Industries Ltd. are automatic
metering screw feeders that dispense powdered, pelletized, or similar material into a secondary
process dictated by the customer. The basic operation of both the VMF-15 and VMF-18 is the
same. The following is a brief step by step description of how the volumetric feeder operates.
STEP 1) The material or chemical that is to be fed at a certain measured rate is first dispensed
into the hopper. The hopper relies on gravity and/or an optional agitation attachment
(see Figure 2) to move the material to the bottom of the hopper.
STEP 2) The material or chemical is dispensed via a horizontally rotating solid auger or open
helix (see Figure 3) which is connected to a parallel shaft gearmotor. The gearmotor’s speed is
electronically controlled by an integrated electronic speed control.
STEP 3) The rotation of the auger or open helix then moves the material along the base of the
hopper towards and into the feeder spout (see Figure 3).
STEP 4) The material then exits the volumetric feeder at the operators chosen rate and is
dispensed into the process or container as determined by the user.

D. AUGER SIZING AND FEED RATE INFORMATION
The type and size of auger used by the volumetric feeder is directly dependent on the type of
material that is going to be fed through the screw feeder. An estimated figure can be determined
by utilizing an approximate material density for the material to be fed and then calculate the
outcome using specific formulas. Scaletron will provide assistance and detailed information on
topics relating to calculating auger sizes and feed rates before the purchase a VMF series
volumetric screw feeder. For further information contact a Scaletron sales representative.
However, even with the proper estimated feed rate calculation the feed rate can be affected by
other outside variables, such as differences in environmental conditions or uniformity of the
material being fed. Therefore, feed rate adjustment is covered in more detail later in this manual.
Prior to any permanent operations the operator must ensure that the screw type and feed rate is
correct, if these steps are overlooked or bypassed the screw feeder may not operate as
anticipated.
**To ensure reliability and longevity of equipment Scaletron recommends that the feeder speed be kept at
roughly 75% of maximum feed rate**
IMPORTANT:
The above approximate volumetric capacities have been calculated using
Scaletron’s standard auger dimensions and maximum rpm of each motor
configuration offered. It is VERY IMPORTANT that this information be
used for REFERENCE ONLY. Variables relating to the material being fed,
such as material density and physical characteristics, coupled with actual
feeding system components, such as the size and shape of the chemical
handling system, will affect the actual volumetric capacity and feed rate.

III. SECTION THREE: COMPONENT DESCRIPTIONS
A. DRIVE UNIT
Scaletron’s VMF series screw feeders are driven by Leeson TENV 90VDC PE350 Series parallel
shaft washdown gearmotors. These gearmotors are designed for environments that would be
subject to frequent wash downs and are inherently water and dust proof. They are also low
maintenance and specifically made to be used with fullwave non-filtered SCR controls. The
gearmotor bypasses the necessity for any extra moving parts, such as, pulleys and/or belts. It also
provides simplified coupling to the drive shaft by allowing the utilization of a single high torque
coupling assembly (see Figure 3). The primary shaft is supported by a bearing assembly made of
UHMW (see Figure 4). The self lubricating material properties of UHMW allow the bearing
assembly to provide rigid support but also allow smooth turning of the auger assembly. Located
inside the bearing assembly is one o-ring. This o-ring provides a leak free seal around the drive
shaft so material in the hopper cannot exit through the bearing assembly.
B. FEED SYSTEM
The auger assembly is similar for both the VMF-15 and VMF-18. The diameter of the overwind
auger is the only difference between the two models. There are two basic components of the
auger assembly. The first component is the primary auger helical screw, which can be a solid
auger or an open helix type that provides the movement of the material to be dispensed. The
second component is the overwind auger, which ensures the smooth delivery of materials to the
primary auger. During assembly of the feed system the overwind auger is located over the
threads of the primary auger, using the dowel hole to ensure correct locating. Then the primary
auger is attached to the drive shaft by method of left hand threads making sure that the over wind
auger base plate is correctly seated allowing the helical screw to be thoroughly tightened into
operating position. Once fully assembled the primary auger is surrounded by the concentric
overwind auger, allowing both helical screws to be turned at the same time via the same drive
shaft.
C. ELECTRONIC FEED CONTROL UNIT
Scaletron Industries Ltd. uses a Leeson Speedmaster® Washguard® Model 174102 NEMA 4X
SCR motor controller in the VMF series of volumetric feeders. For a detailed description, please
refer to the Leeson Speedmaster® Washguard® Operating Manual that is supplied with the
purchase of a volumetric screw feeder from Scaletron Industries Ltd.
D. OPTIONAL VIBRATION SYSTEM
The VMF-15 and VMF-18 both have the option of adding a VIBCO Model SPWT-21 electric
vibratory agitator to the exterior of the hopper. Scaletron uses the VIBCO Model SPWT-21
because it is watertight, has an adjustable speed option, and delivers 20 lbs in force. With the
addition of a vibratory agitator to the gravity fed hopper certain materials that normally are
difficult to feed can be more easily moved to the primary auger ensuring positive feed control.

III. SECTION THREE: COMPONENT DESCRIPTIONS (CONTINUED)
E. ADDITIONAL ACCESSORIES AND COMPONENTS
Scaletron Industries Ltd. offers many accessories for the VMF series volumetric feeders. These
accessories allow the customer to design a more specific feeder system to meet their needs.
Accessories include integrated “Loss in Weight” measurement system, lids, hopper extensions,
single bag loader, base stands, adjustable level feet, mixing tanks, and a wetting cone. All of the
accessories offered by Scaletron Industries are described in more detail in the VMF Series
Accessories Manual. If more information is needed please contact your local Scaletron Industries
sales representative.
1. “Loss in Weight” Measurement System: Since Scaletron Industries Ltd. specializes in
chemical scale design they thought it convenient to offer a fully integrated measuring system
on the VMF series volumetric screw feeders. The system utilizes four frame mounted load
cells directly connected to Scaletron’s 1099 indicator. The indicator box can be mounted in
its normal position which is attached to the motor cover box on the screw feeder or it can be
wall mounted in a remote location with an additional length of indicator wire.
2. Lids: The basic volumetric screw feeder from Scaletron Industries Ltd. is NOT supplied
with a lid for the top of the hopper. Scaletron Industries offers three lid configurations. The
first type of lid is a simple, “lift off” type lid which has a handle for griping at its center and
simply lifts vertically from the hopper. The second is a hinged lid that is securable by a
lockable latch. Lastly, is the third lid which is secured via fasteners. This particular cap can
then be customized to accept the cut out or bolt pattern of existing or anticipated feed system
tubing. This accessory is primarily used when extra hopper capacity is required and the load
of that extra capacity exceeds the load limits of the volumetric feeder’s frame.
3. Hopper Extensions: Hopper extensions are offered that range from 2.4 to 13.6 additional
cubic feet. These extensions are specifically designed to mount directly to the VMF series
volumetric feeder. As a precaution relating to designed load capacity and stability
considerations, Scaletron industries only recommends the use of their external hopper
configurations. For more information please contact your Scaletron equipment sales
representative.
4. Single Bag Loader: The single bag feeder allows the operator to safely load standard 50lb
feed material bags into the hopper quickly and efficiently. This loader also can be fitted with
a dust removal fan to keep work areas clean and free of airborne dust produced by unloading
feeding material bags. For more information please contact your Scaletron equipment sales
representative.

5. Base Stands: Although stands are not supplied with the basic volumetric screw feeder
package, Scaletron Industries does and will fabricate custom stands to meet the customer’s
requirements. For more information please contact your Scaletron equipment sales
representative.
6. Adjustable Level Feet: If a need for leveling the volumetric feeder is foreseen Scaletron
offers adjustable level feet. There are two types of leveling feet offered. One is a standard
stainless steel foot with rubber pad that has the ability to raise and lower the height of the
feeder. The second foot is a stainless steel bolt down swivel foot which allows for an
adjustable height permanent mounting position. This type of foot is suited for situations
where mounting surfaces are not level but the feeder must be securely bolted down.
Adjustable level feet are already included with the “Loss of Weight” measurement system
option.
7. Mixing Tank: Mixing tanks in various capacities, as well as, custom designed
configurations are available from Scaletron Industries. These tanks are designed to be
capable of accepting the VMF series volumetric feeders in a direct mounting location atop of
the tanks. This location allows the customer to free up spatial resources by subtracting the
need for a base stand or other mounting configurations. For more information please contact
your Scaletron equipment sales representative.
8. Wetting Cone: Scaletron manufactures a wetting cone that is specially designed to be
compatible with the VMF series of volumetric feeders. Scaletron’s wetting cone allows the
customer to ensure proper water to material mixture, while providing a dust free work
environment. For more information please contact your Scaletron equipment sales
representative.
IV. SECTION FOUR: INSTALLATION AND SET UP
A. UNPACKING THE FEEDER
After the volumetric screw feeder is unpacked, check all items against packing list to confirm that
all parts described or required are present. This ensures that all parts have been received from
Scaletron’s manufacturing facility and also confirms that no parts were accidently discarded
during the unpacking process.
Note:
If possible, all equipment should be unpacked at the location where the
assembly and installation is to be conducted.
11
Model VMF-15 and VMF-18 Operating Manual REV2015.001
IV. SECTION FOUR: INSTALLATION AND SETUP (CONT.)
B. CHOOSING A LOCATION
The location for the volumetric feeder is completely decided upon by the owner of the equipment.
However, Scaletron would like to make it clear that installing the volumetric feeder in locations
that are primarily damp or subject to fluctuating environmental conditions may have an adverse
effect on the material density and flow rate of the material to be fed. Also, locations that are
subject to strong air currents should be avoided, so that dry powdered chemicals will not become
airborne creating dust that may cause property damage and/or personal injury.
C. MOUNTING THE FEEDER
The VMF series is designed to be mounted in various configurations and it is the decision of the
equipment owner to decide on mounting locations. However, Scaletron does recommend the
following when considering mounting location priorities:
When possible use the correct stand accessories and/or mixing tank provided by
Scaletron Industries, this will ensure that the volumetric feeder is properly secured
per the factory requirements.
If no standard Scaletron support equipment is purchased, then ensure the structure
that is to support the volumetric feeder is level and has a mounting surface that is
equal to or larger than dimensions “I” and “J”. These dimension represent the
distance between the 0.75” diameter mounting holes located in the base assembly of
the feeder.(see Figure 1 )
Always make sure all fasteners used to permanently locate the volumetric feeder and
any connecting components are correctly installed and completely tightened and
secured.
WARNING!!
Failure to correctly secure all fasteners used in installation of volumetric
feeder may result in personal injury and/or property damage.
NOTE:
Scaletron Industries recommends that there should be 36” of clearance
around the perimeter of the volumetric feeder after proper installation in its
permanent location. Maintaining adequate clearance room will allow much
easier maintenance inspections and servicing in the future.
12
Model VMF-15 and VMF-18 Operating Manual REV2015.001
IV. SECTION FOUR: INSTALLATION AND SETUP (CONT.)
D. MOUNTING THE SCR CONTROL BOX
Scaletron VMF series volumetric feeders come standard with their SCR control boxes and
optional scale indicator boxes mounted directly to the motor mount box (see Figure 2) At the
request of the customer, Scaletron will furnish the required extra components and accessories if
the control box and/or optional scale indicator boxes must me mounted in a remote location
separate from the feeder itself. Contact a Scaletron sales representative for more information.
E. MOUNTING THE HOPPER
Many times the built in standard hopper on a volumetric feeder simply does not provide enough
volume for the demand of material to be dispensed. For this reason Scaletron provides optional
hopper extensions. These extensions are the only accessories recommended for use on the VMF
series volumetric feeders. Please refer to the “Additional Accessories and Components” section
of this manual located on page 10. If the customer knows the volumetric feeder is or will be
installed in a location where the built in hopper will be fed from a separately supported primary
hopper, then Scaletron also provides a customizable hopper connection lid accessory which can
utilize a flexible mount connection for the transfer of the material from the primary hopper to the
built in hopper on the VMF series volumetric feeder.
WARNING!!
Scaletron strongly advises against the utilization of any other directly
mounted primary hopper extensions. The use of which may cause premature
equipment failure and/or damage to property and personnel.
WARNING!!
Serious injury or death may occur if proper and current electrical codes and
procedures are not strictly adhered to during the installation, operation, and
maintenance of this volumetric screw feeder.
F. CONNECTING THE POWER
Power and other electrical connections to the feeder are customizable to meet the owner’s specific
needs. However, the correct procedures must be followed for safe and efficient operation.
Scaletron insists that the customer refers to the electrical diagrams and procedure instructions in
the digital copies of the Leeson and Vibco operating manuals provided in conjunction with this
manual upon the purchase of a VMF series volumetric feeder from Scaletron Industires.
13

H. ADJUSTING THE CURRENT SET POINTS
In an effort to speed up the installation and operation of the volumetric feeder, Scaletron ships each VMF
series volumetric feeder from the factory pre-calibrated. The customer’s desired specifications are taken
into consideration and then calculated with standard theoretical loads, environment, and dimensions. The
resulting calibration is as close to the customer’s desired specifications as possible and may need no extra
calibrating. However, volumetric feeders rely on other variables that can only be ascertained by real
world “on site” experimentation. It is highly recommended that verification of the pre-calibration be
made in the field at the installation site to establish the correct operating and calibration settings. Please
refer the “Calibrating” starting section on page 10 of the Leeson Speedmaster® Washguard®
Operational Manual for the Leeson Model 174102 SCR Motor Control Unit. (A provided in electronic
copy is furnished with the purchase of a VMF Series volumetric feeder from Scaletron Industries)
IMPORTANT:
Scaletron strongly insists that “on site” test readings be performed to
correctly verify the calibration of the VMF series volumetric feeder. DO NOT
solely rely on factory calibration settings, variables such as material
characteristics, environment, and hopper feeding equipment WILL BE
different at the installation site.
I. ADJUSTING THE VIBRATORY AGITATION CYCLE
The optional vibratory agitator is directly mounted to the built in hopper on the VMF series feeder. Like
SCR controls, the settings for the vibratory agitator are set to a factory standard obtained by calculating
data supplied by customer’s requirements and optimal theoretical operating conditions. The standard
vibratory agitator is offered in a simple “on/off “ configuration and will need expandable circuitry if
feeding applications dictate a more complex vibrating cycle. Because, finding the correct vibration
setting in “real world” operating conditions can be difficult and most likely will be determined by trial
and error experimentation. To shorten the process and length of agitation experiments, Scaletron does
offer adjustable variable controls which allows vibration cycles to be set and executed automatically. For
more information contact your Scaleton Industries sales representative.
NOTE:
Running the optional Vibco agitator constantly will have negative affects
regarding, material federates and equipment longevity. It is highly
recommended by Scaletron that the use of an automated vibratory agitation
cycle be adopted.
V. SECTION FIVE: MAINTENANCE
16
Model VMF-15 and VMF-18 Operating Manual REV2015.001
A. RECOMMENDED PROCEDURES
The VMF-15 and VMF-18 have been designed to be as maintenance free as possible. However,
