given the complexity of today’s it environments and the business risks of downtime, data loss, and failure, no one can afford to operate without a robust and well-tested disaster recovery (dR) plan for critical systems. However, maintaining an idle data center is not an economically viable option. Further, testing of the dR plan can be costly, complex, and disruptive. now, VMware® and netapp® have teamed up with SaP to take the risk, worry, and complexity out of dR for your SaP® software landscape by providing a solution that makes disaster recovery manageable, reliable, repeatable, and cost effective.

Site Recovery Manager is a ground-breaking product for disaster recovery that uses virtualization to provide pioneering dR management and auto-mation for the virtual data center. it leverages storage replication software and VMware® infrastructure, which virtualizes your SaP software land-scape to increase flexibility, availability, utilization, and service levels for all of your SaP software environments. netapp SnapMirror replicates your VMware-virtualized SaP software land-scape to your dR site, providing the highest possible data availability. By replicating data at high speeds over a lan or a Wan, SnapMirror soft-ware provides the highest possible data availability and fastest recovery for SaP applications. SnapMirror also facilitates reverse synchronization, so that you can get back to your primary site easily after disaster recovery.

SnapMirror continually updates the mirrored data to keep it current. When used in conjunction with netapp Flexclone® copies, your dR hardware can be used for remote tape backup, read-only data distribution, testing on

traditional dR solutions leave many organizations unable to meet recovery time and recovery point objectives. the slow and often manual recovery pro-cesses common in traditional dR solu-tions are prone to errors and result in frequent failures. Site Recovery Man-ager automates the recovery process to enable it to be executed rapidly and accurately. centralized dR plans simplify the creation and ongoing management of the dR framework. they are easy to manage, store, and document and can be executed with a mouse click. addi-tionally, Site Recovery Manager is tightly integrated with VMware infrastructure, so you can create, manage, and update your recovery plans for your SaP software landscape from the same place that you manage your virtual infrastructure.

Enable Reliable Recovery with Easier Testing

testing disaster recovery plans for your SaP software landscape and helping to enable them to be executed correctly are critical to making recovery reliable. However, testing is difficult with tradi-tional solutions because of the high cost, complexity, and disruption associ-ated with the process. another challenge is helping to enable staff to be trained and prepared to execute the complex and often manual process of recovery. Site Recovery Manager helps you over-come these obstacles by enabling real-istic, frequent tests of recovery plans and eliminating common causes of fail-ures during recovery.

Figure 2 shows the testing of a recovery plan. the upper left screen displays the status of the primary site and a view of one SaP application. While the primary site is active, a dR test is executed in the secondary site (shown in the lower right screen). critical steps are auto-mated, greatly simplifying test execution and improving reliability in the case of an actual disaster.

Figure 3 shows the result of the recov-ery test provided in Figure 2. the replicated virtual machines with their respective SaP applications have been recovered, and the recovered SaP software landscape is available for tests in an isolated network, shielded from the production site.

the lower right screen now shows the recovered ideS application – the dR plan has been successfully tested. note that in this example no data was lost. the sales orders in the recovered SaP application match those of the production system, shown in the upper left window, since no sales orders were entered since the last replication.

Since Site Recovery Manager leverages VMware infrastructure, hardware inde-pendence is built in, helping enable successful recovery even when recovery hardware is not identical to production hardware. this is illustrated by the fact that the production systems in the prim-ary site, ideS-prd and ScM-prd, are distributed across two physical servers but are colocated in the dR site (see right-hand screen in Figure 3). also, in the dR site one still sees an ScM sandbox (ScM-sbx) system running, which illustrates that the dR site can be efficiently made use of in standard operation.
