1. Purpose

The Blue Medora VMware vRealize Operations (vROps) Management Pack for Dell EMC VMAX User Guide describes the primary features of the Management Pack for Dell EMC VMAX, including dashboards, views, reports, alerts, and metrics that allow users to optimize the monitoring and management of VMAX storage system resources from within vRealize Operations.

2. Introduction to the Management Pack

The Management Pack for Dell EMC VMAX is an embedded adapter for vRealize Operations (vROps) that monitors VMAX storage systems remotely. It connects to each supported storage device to retrieve data regarding resources.

2.1 How the Management Pack Collects Data

During each data collection cycle, the Management Pack opens a Unisphere REST API connection to the configured storage array and queries it to retrieve metrics regarding VMAX resources.

The collection interval for the adapter instance resource determines how often the Management Pack collects data. The default collection interval is five minutes.

The Management Pack supports Autodiscovery of resources. When you enable Autodiscovery for an adapter instance, the Management Pack creates resources in vRealize Operations and collects data after the main collection query runs. If a new resource belongs to a resource kind that does not exist in vROps, the Management Pack creates the resource kind.

2.2 Data the Management Pack Collects

The Management Pack can collect performance data, relationships (associations), and events for the following Dell EMC VMAX resources:

2.3 External Relationships

In addition to internal relationships, the Management Pack also includes the following external relationships:

2.4 Inventory Tree (Traversal Spec)

The Inventory Tree (Traversal Spec) feature within vROps allows you to easily navigate your environment. The hierarchical structure implicitly shows relationships among resource kinds and enables quick drill-downs to root-cause issues.

3. Dashboards

Dashboards are the primary user interface that allow users to monitor Dell EMC VMAX resources from within vRealize Operations.

3.1 EMC VMAX Overview

The EMC VMAX Overview dashboard provides at-a-glance heatmaps depicting the overall health of your VMAX resources.

3.2 EMC VMAX Health Investigation

The EMC VMAX Health Investigation dashboard allows you to select a VMAX resource from the Environment Overview widget to view its alerts, scoreboard, and selected metrics charts.

3.3 EMC VMAX IOPS

The EMC VMAX IOPS dashboard allows you to select a volume from the heatmap to view its related datastore and virtual machine as well as KPIs for each resource.

3.4 EMC VMAX Front End Director Detail

The EMC VMAX Front End Director Detail dashboard allows you to select an array, front end director, front end port, and volume to view detailed metrics for each resource.

The EMC VMAX Masking View Detail dashboard allows you to select a masking view, port group, volume, and storage group to view relationships and detailed metrics for each resource.

The EMC VMAX Hosted VMs dashboard allows you to select a virtual machine and related datastore and volume to view KPIs for each resource as well as related alerts.

3.9 EMC VMAX 2 FAST VP Policy

The EMC VMAX 2 FAST VP Policy dashboard allows you to select a FAST VP Policy and related tier, thin pool, volume, and datastore to view details for each resource.

4. Views

The Management Pack for Dell EMC VMAX creates views that allow the user to view statistics of metrics for various Dell EMC VMAX resources. The views help give a broad picture of the entire system, as opposed to a more in depth view.

To access the Management Pack views, go to Environment > All Objects > EMC VMAX Adapter and double-click on the desired Object (resource). Select the Details tab, then Views. The available views for that resource are listed and can be selected.

5. Reports

The Management Pack for Dell EMC VMAX contains seven out-of-the-box custom reports, as listed in the table below. Most reports contain one or more of the views listed in section “4. Views”. These reports can be exported and easily shared with key stakeholders in either .pdf or .csv formats.

EMC VMAX Capacities Shows capacity metrics for every EMC VMAX resource.

EMC VMAX Health and Availability Shows health and availability for every EMC VMAX resource.

EMC VMAX KPIs Shows KPIs for every EMC VMAX resource.

EMC VMAX Properties Shows properties for every EMC VMAX resource.

EMC VMAX Throughput, Latency, and IOPS Shows all throughput, latency, and IOPS for EMC VMAX.

To access the Management Pack reports, go to Environment > All Objects > EMC VMAX Adapter and double-click on the desired Object (resource). Select the Reports tab, then Report Templates.

To run the selected report, click the Run Template icon ( ), then click Generated Reports, to select the report in your preferred format.

6. Tags

To further customize how your Management Pack dashboards are displayed, the following tags (containers) are currently available for filtering:

To select a tag, perform the following steps:

NOTE: Depending on the dashboard, the steps for selecting a tag may vary slightly.

1. Navigate to the dashboard you want to filter.2. Select Edit ( ) on the dashboard widget you want to filter.3. In the Edit window, under Filter, expand the EMC VMAX Tags or EMC VMAX Related Objects option.4. Select the desired tag and click Save.

7. Alerts

The Management Pack for Dell EMC VMAX pulls health status, notifications, and events from VMAX storage system resources and displays them in vRealize Operations as alerts.

8. Analysis Badges

Using the predictive analytics capabilities of the vROps Analysis Badges through capacity definitions, the Management Pack for Dell EMC VMAX populates capacity and utilization breakdowns for several VMAX resource kinds. Refer to section “12. Appendix III: Capacity Definitions” for the full list of resource kinds and capacity definitions.

9. Troubleshooting the Management Pack

Known troubleshooting information can help you diagnose and correct common problems with the Management Pack for Dell EMC VMAX.

9.1 Troubleshooting an Adapter Instance

Perform these general troubleshooting steps to diagnose and correct problems with an adapter instance:• Edit the adapter instance and click Test Connection to verify the connection to vROps. Refer to

section “9.2 Testing Connection Failures”.• View the collection status and collection state for the adapter instance resource on the Inventory

Explorer page in vROps.• Check the adapter and collector logs for errors. Refer to section “9.3 Viewing System Log Files”, for

details.

9.2 Testing Connection Failures

When clicking Test Connection in the Manage Solution window when adding an adapter instance, the following connection errors are possible.

9.2.1 Incorrect username or password

Error: “Username or password is incorrect.”Action: Ensure the Unisphere for VMAX username and password are correct.

9.2.2 Trust Store path is invalid

Error: “Trust store [$optional_user_specified_path] is invalid: No trusted certificate found.”Action: Ensure you have added the VMAX host server’s SSL certificate to the vROps Truststore (refer to section “5.2 Adding an SSL Certificate to the vROps Truststore” in the accompanying Installation & Configuration Guide) and have copied the correct path into the Trust Store configuration window.

9.2.3 Network is unreachable

Error: “Network is unreachable, or connection timed out. Ensure host and port are correct.”Action: Ensure the hostname or IP address of your VMAX system is correct. Only IPv4 is supported.

9.2.4 Unable to find enable SSL protocol

Error: “Unable to successfully find an enabled SSL protocol to use. We attempted to use the following: [$list_of_ssl_protocols_we_attempted_to_use]”Action: Determine the SSL protocol enabled on the specified host system, then enable that protocol on the vROps system from which the instance is run.


9.2.5 Checking credentials against a GET request to endpoint

Error: “Checking credentials against a GET request to endpoint [performance/Array/keys]”“GET request to endpoint [performance/Array/keys] unsuccessful”“GET request to endpoint [performance/Array/keys] unsuccessful: $some_message”Action: The endpoint returned an empty response. Verify that the Unisphere system is up and responding.

9.2.6 Checking credentials against a POST request to endpoint

Error: “Checking credentials against a POST request to endpoint [performance/Array/metrics]”“POST request to endpoint [performance/Array/metrics] unsuccessful”“POST request to endpoint [performance/Array/metrics] unsuccessful: $some_message”Action: The message string could be any of the first four error messages. Refer to their suggested actions.

9.2.7 Symmetrix ID is not valid

Error: If entries were supplied to the optional “Symmetrix ID Whitelist” configuration field, “Checking that provided Symmetrix IDs are valid.” If one of the Symmetrix IDs was invalid, “Symmetrix ID [$id] is not a valid ID to collect against.”Action: Ensure the Symmetrix IDs entered into the configuration window are correct.

9.3 Viewing System Log Files

You can view adapter errors in the adapter and collector log files. You can view the adapter and collector log files in the vROps user interface or in an external log viewer.• The adapter log files are in the $VCOPS_BASE/user/log/adapters/EMCVMAXAdapter/ folder.• The collector log files are in the $VCOPS_BASE/user/log/ folder.

The logging level is set to WARNING by default. To troubleshoot issues, set the logging level to INFO. To view detailed messages, including micro steps, queries, and returned results, set the logging level to DEBUG.

You can set the base log level for the collector via Administration ( ) > Support > Logs > Select COLLECTOR folder > Select Edit Properties icon ( ) > Edit Root logger level.

NOTE: If you set the logging level to DEBUG, log files can become large very quickly. Set the logging level to DEBUG only for short periods of time.
