Vocabulary Pumpkin PatchDIRECTIONS:Describe a pumpkin using at least three vocabulary words and at least one simile/metaphor/pun/hyperbole/alliterative phrase or other literary technique. You can refer to a specific holiday, season or simply describe the pumpkin in general. See the example at the right for details.
The pumpkin is a staple in the Thanksgiving meal—most often penetrating the dessert table in the form of pie and creating envy among all the lesser-loved desserts (personification). It is a disaster if pumpkin pie is not at Thanksgiving (hyperbole).

At Halloween, a carved pumpkin might exorcise any irate demons that might try to pilfer the souls in the house (personification). Terminating such terrors with a pumpkin might seem trite (alliteration) but better to surmount the obstacles than be usurped (consonance).
Halloween provides countless images and games that children associate with this fun holiday. The Pin the Part of Speech on the Pumpkin Grammar Game combines learning the parts of speech and a modified
version of the game Pin the Tail on the Donkey.
For each day of the week leading up to Halloween, students can pin the part of speech to the pumpkin. For example:
• Monday:Nouns
• Tuesday:Verbs
• Wednesday:Adjectives
• Thursday:Adverbs
• Friday:Prepositions

For many of us, the onset of Halloween means an end to the first quarter of school. Students might be finishing up projects or taking those first high-stakes tests of the year. Because students work at different speeds, some groups or individuals might be done with a project while others need more time. How do you fill that time with quality and meaningful work?
In grammar instruction, identification of key grammar elements is a part of the learning process. My idea this week: have students identify the correct grammar vocabulary term in the clue then find the word in the word bank that that fits in the boxes on the crossword puzzle. This activity reinforces student’s identification of key grammar elements and fosters recognition to aid in student learning.

FOOD 1: Dinner RollsMoist and warm, these rolls will make you feel faint with hunger. You must be patient when eating your roll because it crumbles quickly, so do not force an entire roll into your mouth at once, even if you would prefer to do so.
FOOD 2: Green SaladCrisp lettuce, firm tomatoes, and sweet cucumbers make your goal of eating all your veggies quite easy. Perhaps a tangy ranch dressing will make your salad even better.
Turkey and Mashed Potatoes
While turkey and mashed potatoes are a common dish at a Thanksgiving meal, they are really delicious. Allow yourself time to savor each bite, until all traces of food are gone.
FOOD 4: Pumpkin PieThis dessert is made with pumpkin puree and a medley of spices , so each bite will taste rich. The warm pie crust and sweetened whipped cream complement the spices in the pumpkin pie filling.
