Chinese Curriculum I SY 2017-2018
(Vocabulary and grammar adopted from UVA Startalk 2015) 1
Unit 1 Name, nationality and phone number Essential Knowledge (Facts & Skills)
Students will be able to • Greet people in Chinese • Tell his/her nationality in Chinese • Ask basic questions using the question word 吗 • Count from 0‐10 • Show culturally appropriate hand gestures to indicate numbers 0‐10 • Tell one’s telephone number • Call each other to introduce themselves
Strategies/Activities /Assessments
• Interview: walk along music, stop and interview • Exchanging business cards • Information gap: who he/she is • Review board game *In each unit, students work on listening, speaking, reading, and writing. They have one speaking and one writing
task accompanying a summative assessment (including grammar, listening, and reading) to assess if they have achieved the objectives listed above, through the three communicative modes, at the end of the unit. *The approach of flipped classroom is followed. In that, students are assigned to work on grammars that they will need to learn for the unit and that they are able to learn on their own from home in advance. The class focuses on meaningful communications that need teacher instruction and supervision. 90% of classroom instruction will stay in the target language. Thus, students are provided as much input in the target language and the teacher will push for student output through a variety of learner‐centered activities.
