The word root –spec- means “look”. To inspect is to “look at carefully”. Glasses may be called

spectacles. Even the word spy comes from –spec-. Most English words with this root are taken from the Latin verb specere, “to look.” However, other sources are the Latin verb spectare, meaning “to

watch,” and the Indo-European root –spek-.
