Wear, Where, Were, We’re

These four words are often confused.

Wear (verb)—to put clothing on one’s body; to cause to deteriorate• I am going to wear my new jeans to school.• You will wear a hole in your jeans if you keep sliding on the floor.

Where (adverb)—place• Where do you think you are going?

Were (verb/helping verb/linking verb)—plural past tense of be• You were the best singer!• We were going to the play but changed our minds.

We’re (contraction)—we are• We’re going to stop at Tops later today.

A great pair of shoes is the fundamental item to wear with any outfit.

Our coach told us that dribbling and ball handling were fundamental skills in basketball.

We’re certain that addition and subtraction are fundamental math skills.

I wonder where he learned the fundamentals to soccer so quickly.

We’re hoping that the heavy rainstorm will not be ongoing for several days and will soon stop.

The police officers’ investigations were ongoing until they were solved.

Where can you find a gym with ongoing hours of being open?

9. passive—not actively participating Two of the friends were passive and would not get involved in the argument.

English Language Arts is a class where you should not be passive since your effort grade is based on how much you participate.

We’re going to remain passive and not actively play dodge ball in gym class today.

When I saw what he was wearing, I could not stay passive. I told him the outfit looked hideous!

10.radical—extreme or drastic in regards to norms

We’re certain that your idea of jumping off the roof with a blanket as a parachute is a bit radical.

The outfit he is wearing is very radical compared to how conservatively everyone else is dressed.

Those were some very radical ideas you shared in social studies class today.

Where did you get those radical thoughts? We did not raise you that way!
