In this unit, please show me that you can use the words wear, where, were, and we’re correctly.

Wear, Where, Were, We’re

These four words are often confused.

Wear (verb)—to put clothing on one’s body; to cause to deteriorate• I am going to wear my new jeans to school.• You will wear a hole in your jeans if you keep sliding on the floor.

Where (adverb)—place• Where do you think you are going?

Were (verb/helping verb/linking verb)—plural past tense of be• You were the best singer!• We were going to the play but changed our minds.

We’re (contraction)—we are• We’re going to stop at Tops later today.

1. adequate—satisfactory; acceptable; enough

Is this outfit adequate for me to wear to school?

Where will we find adequate money to pay for the trip?

We were certain our answer was adequate, but I guess we were wrong.

We’re not impressed with your inadequate work and want you to try harder.

2. coherent—logical; consistent;clear

We’re trying to think coherent thoughts, but our brains our frazzled by the shocking news.

The plans for the fundraiser were coherent and made a lot of sense.

The three different patterns you are wearing are not coherent at all!

Where do you think the most coherent solutions can be found?

3. differentiate—to make differentby modification

We’re going to differentiate the lesson in three different ways.

He will differentiate the outfit he wears to the concert by adding a flashy belt buckle.

The teachers were going to differentiate their lessons but changed their minds.

Where do you think the most differentiation takes place in school?

4. entity—something that has areal existence

The children were certain that Santa Claus was an entity and continued to write letters to him.

We’re staring at the nighttime sky hoping to see spaceships carrying extraterrestrial entities.

If ghosts truly are entities, I highly doubt they wear white sheets.

Where do you think the tooth fairy lives if he truly is an entity?

5. fundamental—a foundation orbasis; original or basic

A great pair of shoes is the fundamental item to wear with any outfit.

Our coach told us that dribbling and ball handling were fundamental skills in basketball.

We’re certain that addition and subtraction are fundamental math skills.

I wonder where he learned the fundamentals to soccer so quickly.

6. implicit—implied rather thanexpressly stated

We’re certain that his wink at you is his implicit way of saying he likes you.

The teacher’s directions were not implied; they were clearly stated three times.

Though my mom never said I couldn’t wear her brand new designer jeans, she implicitly let me know how she felt by hiding them.

Since mom implicitly let me know I couldn’t wear her jeans by hiding them, I wondered where they might be.

7. minimal—barely adequate; theleast possible

The students were only putting minimal effort into their work and earned failing grades.

People wear minimal amounts of clothing during the hot summer months.

We’re sure you only put a minimal amount of sugar in the tea; it’s not sweet at all.

Where do you think you’re going with only a minimal amount of cash in your wallet?

8. ongoing—continuing;uninterrupted

My quest to find the cutest shoes and boots to wear is ongoing.

We’re hoping that the heavy rainstorm will not be ongoing for several days and will soon stop.

The police officers’ investigations were ongoing until they were solved.

Where can you find a gym with ongoing hours of being open?

9. passive—not actively participating Two of the friends were passive and would not get involved in the argument.

English Language Arts is a class where you should not be passive since your effort grade is based on how much you participate.

We’re going to remain passive and not actively play dodge ball in gym class today.

When I saw what he was wearing, I could not stay passive. I told him the outfit looked hideous!

10.radical—extreme or drastic in regards to norms

We’re certain that your idea of jumping off the roof with a blanket as a parachute is a bit radical.

The outfit he is wearing is very radical compared to how conservatively everyone else is dressed.

Those were some very radical ideas you shared in social studies class today.
