BRIEF HISTORY

Vodafone Group is a global telecommunications company headquartered inNewbury, United Kingdom.

World's largest mobile telecommunications company measured by revenuesand second largest by subscribers (behind China Mobile) with 347 millionproportionate subscribers as at 30 June 2010.

Operates in 31 countries and has partner networks in a further 44 countries.

It owns 45% of Verizon Wireless, the largest mobile telecommunicationscompany in the United States measured by subscribers.

The name Vodafone comes from voice data fone, chosen by the companyto "reflect the provision of voice and data services over mobile phones".

Vodafone Essar started its operations in India in 1994 and is under theVodafone Group.

In 1982 : Joint venture between Racal Electronics plc's subsidiaryRacal Strategic Radio Ltd along with Millicom and the Hambros

Technology Trust.

1 January 1985: Vodafone was launched and Racal StrategicRadio was renamed Racal Telecommunications GroupLimited in 1985.

29 December 1986: Racal Electronics bought out the minorityshareholders of Vodafone for GB£110 million.

29th June 1999: Vodafone completed its purchase of AirTouchCommunications, Inc. and changed its name to Vodafone

AirTouch plc.

On 21st September 1999 : merger of U.S. wireless assets with BellAtlantic Corp to form Verizon Wireless.

Vodafone in Asia Pacific

Vodafone committed to become a global mobile

communications provider and in the early 1990s the companybegan its move into the Asia-Pacific markets.

In November 1998 : Purchased BellSouth New Zealand whichlater became re-branded as Vodafone New Zealand.

On October 1, 2003 J-Phone (which Vodafone had purchasedin 2002) becomes 'Vodafone¶.

On 28th October 2005 : Acquisition of a 10 per cent stake inIndia's Bharti Televentures, which operates the largest mobilephone network in India under the brand name AirTel.

On 25th January 2006 : Announces that Indonesia, Malaysia andSri Lanka are added to the Vodafone footprint as VodafoneGroup signs a partner network agreement with TelecomMalaysia.

18th September 2002 : Signs a partner agreement with the MTCgroup of Kuwait which is re-branded to MTC-Vodafone.

3rd November 2005 : Increases stake in Vodacom Group bybuying-out the 15% stake held by VenFin. This gives Vodafone a50% stake in Vodacom.

8th November 2006 : Announces a deal with Telecom Egyptresulting in further co-operation in the Egyptian market; andincreasing of stake in Vodafone Egypt.

After the deal, Vodafone Egypt will be 55% owned by the group,while the remaining 45% will be owned by Telecom Egypt.

World of difference (WoD) The aim of the programme is to take corporate philanthropy in a

new direction.

By providing funding to skilled people with a passion to work for charity.

It creates the opportunity for individuals to work for one year for acharitable partner organization, with salary and related supportprovided. The winners are chosen on merit through a publiccompetition.

To date, over 700 individual winners have participated or arecurrently participating.

Disaster relief Aim : develop partnerships to enhance long term disaster responseand preparedness activity, working with organisations such as theUnited Nations Foundation, Telecoms Sans Frontieres, and the WorldFood Programme.

2010 : the network of Foundations have collaborated in a programme

called Vodafone Red Alert, partnership between VodafoneFoundations and Vodafone Companies to engage Vodafoneemployees and customers in giving following emergencies anddisasters.

Vodafone's response to the disaster relief programme in Haiti.Vodafone expands support for the emergency relief effort in Haiti with

cash grants totalling over £250,000

Vodafone foundation contributed £275,000 towards the appeal

and working with 14 Vodafone companies around the world, engaged

in SMS fundraising, enabling Vodafone customer·s to give

in excess of ½5.24 million.

Mobiles for goodSafe taxi system

Contribute to the safety of taxi drivers by preventing or discouragingassaults

Developed by the Vodafone Portugal Foundation in partnership with theMinistry of Internal Affairs and the Public Security Police (PSP)

Covered around 700 taxis operating in the Greater Lisbon area.

Since February 2007, the system operated in the O'Porto Metropolitan Areaand February 2008 in the Lisbon county, in a total of 1,400 taxi vehicles.

Developed by the Vodafone Portugal Foundation in partnership with theMinistry of Internal Affairs and the Public Security Police (PSP), it initiallycovered around 700 taxis operating in the Greater Lisbon area.

Since February 2007, the system has been operating in the O'Porto

Metropolitan Area and also since February 2008 in the Lisbon county, in atotal of 1,400 taxi vehicles.

Integration of GSM, GPS, enabling the police to determine the location ofthe vehicle in real time as soon as the driver gives the alarm, either whenstationary or on the move.

Vodafone donates $1 Million in support of Web Foundation Initiativein Africa

As web penetration rate in Africa is 6.8% so they are creating learningopportunities for local entrepreneurs and support the United Nations·Millennium Development Goals to end poverty by 2015.

As part of its support, Vodafone invited the Web Foundation to join itsresearch panel which looks into the Socio-Economic Impact ofMobile (SIM) in society.

The current SIM project is exploring the impact of mobile broadbandin emerging economies. The results are expected in autumn 2011.

This programme identified a gender gap in mobile phoneusage.

It was realized that women do not own mobile phones.

Do not have access to the potentially life changing toolshealth services, banking, employment opportunities andeducational tools etc.

Key barriers : total cost of ownership, technical literacy andcultural barriers to adoption.
