Art and soulReflection, commentary, expression – art wears many hats and serves society in myriad ways.
But what purpose does it serve in our own private spaces? asks Annemarie Kiely
What role does art play in the home? It plays no role unless you assign it one: to memorialise a face or a place, to semaphore success, to oset tax or a damask-covered couch, to console for the endless pressure to acquire, to politicise, to exhilarate, to amuse,
to agitate, to reflect, to ruminate, to beautify…Or to serve as a reminder of that over-hyped exhibition where
the pinot flowed, the bravura peaked, all reason departed and you purchased a caustically titled bucket and mop and became the patron saint of conceptualism. That is, until a catalogue entry made the work’s intent clear: to clean all idiot art out of contemporary culture. Ah, the gravity of levity when the joke is on you. But hey, Marcel Duchamp changed the entire discourse on art with his porcelain urinal, Fountain (1917), history’s most figurative and famous piss-take.
Yes, conceptualism is the butt of all art jokes as one hapless cleaner gleaned when he binned a Damien Hirst installation featuring cigarette-filled ashtrays after an exhibition launch at
a London gallery. But before you deride such strategies as rubbish perhaps you need to be a bit more Baldessari about it. That’s John Baldessari, the two-metre-tall stretch of an American artist famed for painting colourful dots on appropriated photographs, who philosophised that “conceptual art wasn’t about art that had a concept, but about interrogating the concept of art.”
And that cross-examination, at its most potent and most democratic, posits the questions of what constitutes art, why we make it, why we feel the need to arrange it in salon hangs in our homes, why we institutionalise it and why we classify it. Within closed and codified circles, great art has been decided and displayed according to strict taxonomies that tell of our place in the continuum of culture and society. But whose society is the question increasingly asked of agendas informed by myopic perspectives.
As Helen Molesworth, former chief curator of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (MOCA) recently wrote, “The Museum, the Western institution I have dedicated my life to, with ››

Arent & PykeHOME: FEAST, BATHE, REST
THE CONCEPT A warm, inviting space, removed from the chaos of the world outside — beautiful, lively and poetic.
Our intention is to design an installation that people can
intuitively understand as a space for domestic living, as a home, and to make
it the ultimate physicality of soulful wellbeing. THE INSPIRATION We wanted
to explore our essential needs to replenish (feast), restore (bathe) and
retreat (rest). Each area is articulated by a contemporary Australian artwork and a bespoke furniture piece that speaks to
the archetypal imagery of the space it inhabits. One informs the other and we are reminded that a home is a place in which we find comfort in familiarity, and inspiration and delight in beauty.
THE HIGHLIGHT We’re excited to see how this exhibition will challenge people’s
perception of Australian interior design — in particular, its potential as a mode of exploring cultural values and ideas.
THE F INAL WORD Our work is about telling our clients’ stories and creating a space for that story to continue and
flourish. To convey the idea of storytelling in a space where there was no existing story to work with — the possibilities were endless.

FROM TOP Designer Sibella Court. A moodboard for her installation, Imaginarium.
Sibella Court IMAGINARIUMTHE CONCEPT A celebration of the history of cabinets of curiosity — the original
domestic museum, which was not restricted to a simple cabinet but spilled out to fill a whole room and often the rest of the house. This room has zones that can be
enjoyed by a family and their extended friends — a sofa that is the size of a bed, a home bar, a frippery for dressing up, a 3.4-metre table with one end for dining
and the other for research, and lastly a workshop where mess can be made and left mid-experiment or creation. It’s a space to wonder, imagine, think, read — a place
where you can ultimately disconnect from technology and reconnect through conversation, research and creation. THE INSPIRATION Each and every piece in this
space relates to my history — from a design reference from my 25 years in the industry to a travel souvenir, a go-to material, a past illusion or a time in history that resonates with me. THE FINAL WORD Like all of my interior design jobs, every piece in this project is bespoke. We work hard on creating relationships with our makers and suppliers. By far the loveliest layer of this process was their readiness
to say yes before I even talked them through the concept. VLthesocietyinc.com.au @thesocietyinc

Amber RoadTAKE IT OUTSIDE 2018
THE CONCEPT We’re always exploring the possibilities of inside and outside spaces in our work, so depicting an Australian verandah made sense. This arrests the senses, drawing us in and immersing us in an experience that at first glance is a bit strange and unsettling. Are you inside or outside, or both at the same time? THE INSPIRATION
We [Amber Road’s Yasmine Ghoniem and Katy Svalbe] are sisters. We have the same mother but dierent fathers. Our installation draws on our heritages — Middle Eastern–
Australian [Ghoniem] and Eastern European–Australian [Svalbe] — as well as our travels. It also speaks of time at our grandparents’ and cousins’ farms in Australia — sitting on the porch with family. THE HIGHLIGHT The space is fantastical, like a dream or a sense of déjà vu — Salvador Dalí-like, if you will, where nothing is quite what it seems. THE F INAL WORD Design is a way of exploring the possibility of spaces to take people beyond everyday reality. The real power of an interior is that it can move you
emotionally and intellectually. amberroaddesign.com.au @amberroaddesign

Of all the small-ship cruise lines, Silversea is the classic. It’s the cruise line you choose when you want true slow travel, time to read, play cards, listen to jazz or classical music, learn about ancient China or the history of Hollywood movies, and eat exceptionally well — four or five times a day if you wish, with silver service (of course). It’s also one of the cruise lines that keeps many of the traditions of cruising from an earlier era — ‘gentlemen hosts’ employed to dance with single ladies, butlers suited dashingly in tails, and formal evenings during which guests must dress to the nines.
Certain aspects have been brought forward to the 21st century — no set seating assignments or dinnertimes and all-inclusive alcohol, for instance — but the guests on this cruise seem happy to do old-school activities such as rugging up on deckchairs with a good book from the well-stocked library or sipping pre-dinner martinis in the 1930s-feel Art Deco bar. It’s not the sort of cruise for those who need to be entertained every moment and expect Broadway spectaculars and climbing walls. The shore excursions tend to have an emphasis on history and culture.
After sailing for two days, our first port is Tianjin, China. We opt out of the long bus excursion to Beijing but explore the port city of 15 million people, which is still an hour’s ride from the dock. It’s a surprise — gleaming, well-planned, planted with millions of trees and shrubs, and almost entirely modern apart from the ‘concession’ areas of lovely old 19th-century British, German, Italian and French mansions. The Cultural Square has two exceptional museums — an art gallery showcasing Chinese scrolls and other paintings, and the Tianjin Museum, which contains rooms of beautiful porcelains, jade that dates to the Neolithic era, and delicate ink and stone prints. We also stop by a mansion, once owned by the Shi family, where 19th-century life has been preserved. There’s a lot to admire — canopied beds, tearooms, a timber-lined theatre and some pretty wonderful but dusty dioramas.
We cruise through the Yellow Sea, edging around Korea to Hiroshima, situated on Japan’s largest island, Honshu, on the Seto Inland Sea. It’s raining, which seems appropriate for a visit to the famous ‘A-bomb dome’, the Hiroshima Peace Memorial and former government building that took the brunt of the blast on 6 August, 1945, when the American warplane the Enola Gay dropped the first atomic bomb. It’s symbolic for the city that the metal dome and building ruins still stand.
The Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum contains artefacts from the bombing (graphic photographs, burnt clothing) and a gripping visual reconstruction of the bomb drop, showing the devastation of the city that obliterated 400,000 people, many within one minute. Outside the museum, ladies stand with placards reading ‘NO WAR’.
ipping in and out of Asian ports, this spring cruise on the Silver Shadow has culture, chopsticks and even mechanical crabs.
Shanghai looks like a funfair at night, with its madcap skyline, punctuated with buildings that look like robots, pagodas and giant bottle openers. The wide Huangpu River that divides the old town from the new is insanely busy after dark, a trac jam of dark barges, sleek motor cruisers and ferries lit up with fairy lights.
Sitting on our verandah on the sixth deck of Silversea’s Silver Shadow, we feel like we’re right in the river among it. The Silver Shadow is a small ship, so she has been able to dock right in the centre of the city, with views of both Pudong district and the famous riverfront boulevard, The Bund. A slew of shiny new portside skyscrapers flash dazzling neon, colouring our departure. It’s an exhilarating way to start a cruise that will take us to Tianjin (Beijing); the Japanese inland sea; and Hiroshima, Osaka, Kyoto and, finally, Tokyo.

In the 21st century, we don’t need to make long journeys across the world’s oceans to get anywhere, as travellers did in the first half of last century. And yet, ocean cruising has never been more popular, with nearly 27 million passengers cruising the globe last year. So, just what is it about cruising that its devotees love?
The secret lies in the definiton of the word cruise: ‘to sail about in an area without a precise destination, especially for pleasure’. A cruise is not just where you go, but the way you get there. It’s as much about the onboard experience — the food, the entertainment, the friendships made
— as it is about the destinations. These days, there’s a cruise for just about every taste, from those whose idea of heaven is simply cosying up on a deckchair with waiter service on hand to those who love the nightlife or thrillseekers looking for challenging expeditions.
Some cruise lines proudly replicate the romantic experience of yesteryear, complete with white-gloved stewards, butlers, formal dinners, high teas and even gentlemen-host programs to make sure single ladies have dance partners and cocktail companions. On the other hand, many gleaming new megaships featuring an artillery of amazing facilities are purely of this era, with everything from laser-tag ranges to fully equipped TV studios. The trick is finding the right cruise for you, because there is one.
In this guide, we’ve concentrated on the small, luxury ships that carry only a few hundred passengers — floating five-star hotels that oer exemplary cosseting. These vessels can sail up rivers and into ports where the mammoth ships can’t go; plus, they leave a gentler environmental footprint on fragile shores. We think a boutique ship is the best way to take the plunge if you’ve never cruised before. Bon voyage. VL
