As I type this at the beginning of July for publication in August, it still amazes me that as far as Georgia is concerned, the summer will be over in about a month; at least from a school-is-back-in-session point of view. With summer in Georgia, the calendar doesn’t count.

It has been an exciting summer to say the least. Rabbi Lewis is now Emeritus. Heather gave birth to Shira. The Camp Ruach! campers have picked the first peaches off our peach trees near the Sisterhood Outdoor Sanctuary. And Steven has visited our Etz Chaim campers at Camp Ramah Darom, Camp Barney and Camp Judaea.

It has also been the Summer of flexibility. Our summer Sanctuary is the back part of the Hammer-Chotiner-Tritt Social Hall. Our actual kitchen is a kitchen in memory location only; and our make-shift kitchen is a corner of the social hall, with all the fixtures and equipment in three trailers out back. Mah Jongg is being played outside the Allan & Vivian Levine Family Chapel.

We’ve had a great Swim-A-Long Shabbat Event in June. We represented at the Braves/Reds baseball game in early August (I can write that in July because we’ve just about sold all the tickets). We have launched our Mobile App for both iPhone and Android; and High Holiday packets have been mailed and are available online.

Later this month, we will welcome our new Rabbinic Intern for the year, Amalia Mark. We will gather at East Cobb Park for Shabbat In the Park, Woodstock 50th Anniversary Edition, and the first phase of the Renewal2020 renovations will be nearing completion. Even with the renovations going on around us, we look forward to reconnecting after the summer and celebrating the High Holidays together.

It has been an enjoyable summer here at Etz Chaim and the best is yet to come. Exciting things are happening here.

From Our Rabbi I’m not sure what I expected to see the first time I walked into our sanctuary under construction. I anticipated no pews. It was strange seeing the yahrzeit plaques covered. But a somewhat odd feeling overcame me when it dawned on me that the bimah was missing. Then, I noticed that the eternal light was gone: no longer so eternal. The doors of our Aron Kodesh were removed for safe-keeping, allowing me to stare directly into the nakedness of a deeply holy space, sans our Torah scrolls, which were stored safely in other places throughout the building.

I can’t come up with words to describe that experience. However, I was able to glean some significance of that moment from the famous teaching of Rabbi Avraham Isaac Kook HaKohen, who once spoke about the construction of the Mishkan--the tabernacle--and about its most sacred place, the Holy of Holies.

Once the mishkan was constructed, the Torah tells us that the Holy of Holies could only be entered by the Kohen Gadol, the High Priest, on the holiest day of the year: Yom Kippur. Yet, Rav Kook famously argued, there was at least one moment in time when this sense of awe was almost certainly shared by someone else: by the builders, who together, worked to lay the brick and stone to create the holy space.

The builders of the mishkan, like me, saw the sanctuary down to its studs. They were not, as Rav Kook noted, particularly pious. They did not possess a deep understanding of what they were doing. They almost certainly did not wear the fancy vestments of the High Priest. Nonetheless, without this sacred labor, the holiness of the tabernacle would not have been possible.

As we find ourselves now in the middle of the first phase of our construction project, I cannot help but appreciate so many of you whose efforts helped toward enabling this project come to fruition. Without all of your efforts, fundraising, and generosity, our “1980s Indian Hills Fireplace-Style Aron Kodesh” would still be standing in its original place.

However, I hope that we as a community may together also express our appreciation to the folks behind the scenes who have also helped to shape our holy space. Not long ago, I had lunch with our house committee, architects, millwork professionals, contractors, and project managers responsible for shaping our sanctuary. I was able to offer feedback to our artist, David Ascelon, about our gorgeous Jewish holiday-themed and pedagogically friendly stained- glass windows. Without this talented and dedicated crew, like the builders of the mishkan, creating holiness would not be possible.

In the meanwhile, if you haven’t had a chance to come and stare through the windows into our two projects, don’t miss the opportunity to experience that sense of awe. These plexiglass windows were the brilliant idea of one of our project managers, along with Bob Bachrach, who, as a labor of love, is helping to oversee the construction. Keeping you in the loop this year is our way of saying: “Sanctuary much.”

It has been a great summer so far! I am loving my new role as mom.

Although I am on maternity leave, there are still fabulous programs happening in August. Etz Chaim cheers on the Braves Sunday, August 4, against the Cincinnati Reds! Go Braves! Thank you to everyone who signed up to attend this fun Etz Chaim summer outing. I love seeing so many people sign up for this wonderful multi-generational event. So glad that this has become an annual tradition.

Tisha B’Av is Saturday, August 10, 7:30 p.m., at Etz Chaim. Tisha B’Av commemorates the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem and other tragedies that befell the Jewish people. Tisha B’Av demonstrates the power of Jewish perseverance against all odds. This can feel all too fitting in the current state of rising anti-Semitism, but we will not let this break our spirit. Tisha B’Av will begin with dinner, followed by study from clergy and educators, and then The Book of Lamentations, Megillat Eicha, will be read. This may be a solemn holiday, but we are uplifted by community synagogues coming together to study and learn. It is always refreshing to have the chance to learn from different clergy and educators. I encourage you to join. See more information on page 12.

August also means Shabbat in the Park! Shabbat in the Park takes place on Friday, August 23, at East Cobb Park starting at 5:30 p.m. This is always such a fun kick-off event for Etz Chaim and gives everyone a chance to catch up after summer break. Of course, Men’s Club will be grilling delicious dinner, so you do not want to miss! I will be there and am so excited to introduce you to Shira Blake. See page 9 for more details.

To our families starting back to school, I hope this is a great new year for you!

From Our President From Our Director of Engagement Bit of trivia for you – How many interns has Etz Chaim had in our 44 years as a congregation?

Three!

Believe it or not, Rabbi Lewis was not our first intern; our first intern was actually a classmate of his. Our founding members believed that the original intern was not a good fit for our congregation and chose Rabbi Lewis to be our second intern. We all know that that resulted in a wonderful 42-year relationship.

Last year, Natan Freller became our third intern after 40 years, however we are not waiting another 40 years to bring in a new intern, only about 40 days from the time that I am writing this. Our new Rabbinic Intern, Amalia Mark, will be arriving on August 18. Hopefully you had a chance to read about her in the last edition of the Voice of Chaim. I recently had the opportunity to connect with Amalia on a personal level and get to know her a bit better.

Amalia shared some of her interests with me; she loves baking, reading, and Shabbat. One of her favorite items to bake is coffee muffins; however she is also an avid bread baker. She makes sweet challah woven with jam, multi-grain maple, and Greek bread. She believes that brownies should always be made from scratch as they are easy to make from natural ingredients. Her repertoire also includes cookies and carrot cupcakes with pareve cream cheese lemon mint frosting. As much as Amalia loves to bake, her partner, Louis, whom she met at Pardes, loves to cook. I am hoping that we can convince them to break in our new kitchen by hosting a Shabbat meal one of the weekends when they are both in town.

Celebrating Shabbat by hosting people is one of Amalia’s great pleasures. She relishes singing and eating together and being with others when there are no phones, so she can really connect with them. After shul on Shabbat, she loves to relax with coffee and her cat and read. Every Shabbat she checks out 7 books from the library to read for enjoyment. Amalia’s superpower is her ability to consume books quickly. She finishes 3-4 books on a Saturday afternoon.

When she is not working on a Sunday, Amalia loves to browse Farmer’s Markets. She adores seeing what the local artisans have available in that moment. She also welcomes the opportunity to catch up with people at the market.

Amalia’s energy is contagious, and I love her philosophy on people: “Everyone has a story to tell. If you ask questions you can really get to know people. You can learn Torah from every person.” She sees people as texts - living, breathing texts. “You can learn something from everyone to enhance your life!” I hope that you will all take the time to enhance your lives by getting to know Amalia while she is with us during the year. She will be with us for 2 weeks during her August visit and again with us for the High Holidays and then a series of weekends throughout the year.

Lilah Alexandra Mott will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on August 3, 2019 - 2 Av 5779. She is the daughter of Kelly and Joshua Mott. While Roswell is her "home," Lilah is truly a "child of the world" as she has lived on four continents in her short (almost)13 years. Currently, she is a rising 7th grader at the International School of Bangkok in Thailand and enjoys soccer, playing the piano, tuba, drums, and hanging out with her friends. Lilah was a student of Etz Chaim's Religious School for two years prior to moving overseas. Lilah's Bat Mitzvah parasha is Matot-Massei. Her D'var Torah will be based on

the following quote: "These are the journeys of the children of Israel who left the land of Egypt in their legions." Lilah is also very passionate about animals. For her Bat Mitzvah project, Lilah is working with the Nonthaburi Animal Welfare Alliance (NAWA) in Thailand by walking “soi” dogs and baking/selling dog treats to help pay for their care and adoption.

Men’s Club Update We hope that everyone is having a great summer and we look forward to a great year of activities.

The first week in July Steve Dix, Mark Isbitts, Henry Levine, Chuck Bernstein and Alan Lightstone attended the FJMC Biennial Convention in Toronto, Canada. There were a number of highlights throughout Convention and I will share some thoughts from some of our attendees.

▪ At convention Mark Isbitts received the Ma’asim Tovim Award for the Anshei Darom Region. This award is the highest award that a Region can give to one of its members. Mark received this award for the work he’s done for our club and in organizing and implementing our Regional retreat each year. Congratulations to Mark.

▪ Steve Dix completed his second year as treasurer for the International FJMC and will now serve as a Vice President of the FJMC for the next two years. We are sure that Steve will continue to be a major contributor to the FJMC and we wish him luck in his new role.

▪ Alan Lightstone accepted the position of Vice President for the Anshei Darom Region.

▪ Chuck Bernstein was reappointed as one of two Anshei Darom representatives on the FJMC International Board of Directors.

Thoughts from convention attendees:

Steve Dix: Magic happens at the biennial FJMC convention. Members and many of their spouses come from all over the world to meet and support the continuance of tradition and camaraderie and learning about our programs. For me, the most significant part of the Convention was the introduction of our newest program, which we are calling “Imagine Life”. This year we were confronted and yes, I mean confronted, with this new program that deals with a major issue - mental health - that challenges all of us, either because we have to deal with issues directly, or because we don’t know how to deal with it if it is impacting our friends. The FJMC is going to take this on as a program to remove the “Shonda Factor,” so that those impacted by it will feel less reluctant to discuss it, and those who are not will understand how to be of comfort to those who are. This is not about trying to make lay people therapists; it’s about making it possible for all of us to deal with it without shame or fear or being judgmental. And because we are a Jewish organization, we can use our spirituality in many ways to make this work for all of us.

Mark Isbitts: I thoroughly enjoyed my experience and took a lot away from the week. The convention is a great way to fully realize the power and size of FJMC, while helping to form a true, international brotherhood of Conservative Jewish men. The comradery, ruach and genuine friendship is truly a sight to behold and nothing like I’ve experienced before. It was pretty amazing to see how close so many men, from across North America, were and the friendships that they have developed thru FJMC, even though for many they only see each other once every two years. Most of the sessions were educational from both a personal perspective as well as presenting many ideas and thoughts that we can take back to Etz Chaim and Anshei Darom for improving our chapter and region, respectively. Perhaps the best part of the week was being able to meet so many new people and share our experiences with Men’s Club, synagogues and Judaism in general. I made several contacts that I expect to keep touch with until the next convention.

Chuck Bernstein: The great programming and camaraderie were the top two takeaways from convention.

Alan Lightstone: Once again I was amazed by and enjoyed our Friday night services. It was an uplifting experience to be in such a high energy service where all in attendance were participating. Although there were many excellent programs/breakouts and we will attempt to incorporate into our activities throughout the year, there is one that hit home very hard. That was a discussion led by one of our brothers from the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh. To hear firsthand from someone that was directly involved in the tragedy (but fortunately not present that day) and the support their community has received was both sad and refreshing at the same time.

We want to thank everyone who has participated so far in the exciting endeavor we call #renewal2020. If you haven’t been at Etz Chaim recently, construction is well underway in both the kitchen and the Sanctuary. New LED lighting is being installed in the Sanctuary, the bimah is being reconfigured for enhanced accessibility to the lower bimah, the hearing loop will be installed in the Sanctuary and in classrooms 13-16 (which are used when additional seating is required), all of which will also be getting new carpet squares. The pews are being refurbished and reupholstered before they are reinstalled. The stones have been removed from around the ark and new woodwork will be installed to match the aesthetic finishes already present in our Gelernter Lobby and the Levine Family Chapel. And in the kitchen, updates are being done to plumbing, heating and air, cabinetry, and some of the appliances. It is going to be refreshing to work in the remodeled kitchen when this is completed.

With regard to our major fundraising goals, we are at approximately 82% of our $4.3 Million overall goal, with approximately 47% of our congregation (plus some friends of Etz Chaim) participating. We really want to get the participation percentage up and need your support!!! Every dollar counts and we want you to be a part of the many enhancements we are making to our synagogue as we grow stronger for our future generations.

We are so grateful for every contribution, but I must tell you a story about my very favorite pledge received, which recently occurred after Shabbat services. Lauren and Bailey Levetan were standing outside the social hall after services and looking at the architectural rendering boards that are on display. Bailey said to her mom, “Is that what our synagogue is going to look like? When will that happen? It’s so nice.” Lauren’s reply was “Yes, that is what we are hoping to accomplish with the renovations, but it costs money which is why we are fundraising.” Without hesitation, 5 year old Bailey chimed in, “I want to donate my money to help our synagogue make this happen!!! “

Bailey understood that this was an important project for the future generations of our synagogue and she takes pride in her Jewish home here. Do you know what they did after Shabbat, they went to the bank together and Bailey told the teller she wanted to take money from her personal savings account. Bailey filled out her own name on the pledge card, attached a crisp $100 bill – her hard saved money, and proudly delivered it to the shul. Bailey, you are an inspiration – I see a synagogue president in the making!

Let’s all join Bailey in support of #renewal2020. All donations, large and small, are not only welcome but are absolutely necessary to meeting our goals – please be a part of making our synagogue’s future a better place.

Bereavement Services Offered to Congregants

Etz Chaim’s Chesed Committee will offer to provide meals of consolation to members. This meal is traditionally a dairy meal eaten by mourners upon their return home from the funeral. It includes whole hard-boiled eggs, symbolizing the continuity of life. This service provided by the Chesed Committee allows the family and friends who normally provide the meal to attend the funeral themselves and give the emotional support to the bereaved. Members attending out of town funerals, who sit shiva or hold a memorial service in Atlanta, will be offered a fruit tray.

Contributions made to the Chesed Fund will help to fund these services.

Get Your 2019 Torah Fund Pin

The Hebrew word Chesed means kindness. It can also translate into loving kindness, to convey the deep love that comes through Jewish acts of kindness... all done without the thought of reward.

The Torah has many examples of chesed, such as Abraham and Sarah welcoming three strangers into their tent in the heat of the day; Abraham's servant's prayer for a wife for Isaac, which was answered by Rebecca, offers water to him and his camels; and Ruth, who shows loyalty and kindness to Naomi, by adopting her religion and community as she experiences great loss. Our rabbinic tradition has many laws enacted for our commitment of kindness, making chesed one of the three central pillars of Jewish life.

The Torah Fund pin for 5780 depicts a heart surrounded by three circles, one larger than the next. This symbolizes the heart of kindness, from family, to community to the entire world. May we build a world of kindness.
