    1 Product Overview

This section (Section 1) provides a descriptive overview of the product and may contain referenceto features and functionality available in future system releases.

    1.1 General Overv iew

VoiceMAXe is a standard SIP based solution for VoIP over Mobile WiMAX (16e). VoiceMAXe acts

as a proxy between SIP UA (User Agent) to SSW (Soft Switch) or SBC (Session Border Controller).VoiceMAXe communicates with Airspan Mobile WiMAX Base Station (MacroMAXe) to accomplishthe task of guaranteeing Voice quality as well as managing VoIP bandwidth. It is useful in thefollowing network architectures:

    1) MacroMAXe used in stand alone mode for fixed/nomadic application, with no ASN GW.2) MacroMAXe used in a hybrid network where mobile users are managed via the ASN

GW using IP CS and fixed/nomadic users are managed in a separate path, usingEthernet CS. The VoIP clients served by VoiceMAXe are fixed/nomadic users.

The key features associated with VoiceMAXe are as follows:1. Auto Disco very of SIP User Agents (UA) Upon identifying a registration message,

theVoiceMAXe discovers behind which Base-Station the UA is located.2. Admiss ion Control VoiceMAXe enforces Service Provider Bandwidth Policy and

prioritizeEmergency Services.3. Dynamic UGS or eRTPS VoiceMAXe instructs the Base-Stations to dynamically create

andtear down UGS or ertPS sessions per Voice calls. This mechanism guaranteesoptimized Bandwidth utilization. The operator decides whether the solution is UGS based oreRTPS based.

    1.1.1 VoIP over WiMAX Challenges

    1) VoIP media streams require a constant, uninterrupted data flow. Each UDP packet carriesbetween 10 and 30 milliseconds of voice data. In an ideal world packets never arrive outof sequence or suffer from packet loss.

    2) Wireless environments are not ideal when latency and packet loss is considered.3) Overbooking is widely used to maximise revenues.

1.2 VoiceMAXe Failover RedundancyTo ensure continuous availability of the VoiceMAXe functionality, the VoiceMAXe failoverredundancy solution comprises of two VoiceMAXe servers. One server acting as primary while theother monitors the health and becomes active if the primary has failed. Both servers can act asprimary and secondary and change roles according to their status.

    2 VoiceMAXe functionality

The standalone VoiceMAXe server enables the VoIP over WiMAX service provider to dynamicallyallocate the WiMAX network resources with minimum overhead of pre-assigned bandwidth. The application must deal with 2 challenges:

    Signalling, SIP messages Admission control

Media, RTP media streams Dynamic UGS or eRTPS

    2.2 Auto Discovery

    2.1.1 Overview

To enable dynamic allocation of WiMAX resources for SIP calls the VoiceMAXe must knowwhere each SIP UA (User Agent) is located and communicate with the appropriate BS(Base Station).

    2.1.2 Functionality

One of the fundamental methods of SIP communication is the registration to a registrarserver; the VoiceMAXe acts as a standard SIP proxy listening to all SIP messages. Theregistration packet triggers the Auto Discovery mechanism which gives theVoiceMAXe the ability to determine to which BS a specific SIP UA belongs to.

    2.2 Admiss ion Control

2.2.1 OverviewAn operator must control what type of traffic is allowed on a particular network or segmentof a network. Call Admission Control is a known term in the VoIP world as it preventsoversubscription of VoIP traffic. Essentially, Call Admission Control protects existing voice

traffic from degrading in quality as additional traffic tries to gain access. It preventsnetwork congestion.

2.2.2 FunctionalityAccording to Service Provider defined resources The decision whether to allow a newSIP call establishment has been done on the standalone VoiceMAXe server on a per callbasis. The standalone VoiceMAXe can give precedence to emergency calls and highpriority users.

    2.3 Dynamic UGS / eRTPS

2.3.1 OverviewVoiceMAXe provides the ability to dynamically create and tear down UGS or eRTPS.Using this mechanism guarantees bandwidth utilization per need according the negotiatedCodec selection.

    2.3.2 Functionality

As mentioned before the VoiceMAXe server intercepts all SIP traffic and collects allneeded information. One of the protocols that is being intercepted is the SDP (sessiondescription protocol), from this protocol the VoiceMAXe can predict which Codec will beused during the call conversation and apply a suitable UGS / eRTPS between the BS andthe SS (subscriber station).

    3.2 Local & Remote Management

Standalone VoiceMAXe can be managed using one of the following options:1. Console - the VoiceMAXe hosts SSH server that enables a secure connection

toconfigure and monitor the server.2. WEB the standalone VoiceMAXe hosts a web server for basic monitoring

    andconfiguration via a WEB browser.

    3.3 Standalone VoiceMAXe implementations

This section will contain several network diagram examples for VoiceMAXe deployment.

3.3.1 Standard implementationThis diagram describes a standard WiMAX network with VoIP capabilities, inthis implementation the standalone VoiceMAXe acts as a standard SIP proxy.
