From the Head of Junior School Dear Parents

Grandparents’ Day was held in the Junior School today. Our youngest boys from Prep through to Year 6 enjoyed hosting their grandparents and sharing a day in the life of our wonderful school. Time was spent in classrooms, followed by music, awards and class presentations at a special assembly. Boys and their grandparents then enjoyed morning tea beneath the Jacarandas around the Pavilion. This was a celebration of education and family.

Ponti and Mrs Cathy Clifford Year 6 Canberra Trip Last week, our Year 6 classes visited Canberra on their annual excursion. The boys stayed at the AIS (Australian Institute of Sport), spent time at Parliament House, the Australian War Memorial, Questacon, the CSIRO and the National Art Gallery, along with visits to a number of other venues. The boys also had the pleasure of meeting with the Governor-General, His Excellency General the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove AK MC (Retd) at Government House. This was a most positive experience for all involved.

Mothers’ Day Our annual Mothers’ Day Breakfast was held recently. This function, coupled with the Mothers’ Day stall, resulted in a special time for boys and their mothers. I thank Mrs Rhonda Wilkie, President of the Junior School Supporters’ Group, for her time and effort co-ordinating the breakfast. In addition, I thank all the parents who were involved in this function. The Mothers’ Day stall was organised and run by Mrs Nikki Marsden, and this provided great joy to the boys, with many making very considered and careful choices about the purchases. I thank Nikki and the army of parents who helped run this special event for the boys. Staff News Mr Rob Jeffries (Years 4 to 6 Co-ordinator and Year 6 teacher) and his wife, Carla celebrated the birth of their third child, Maisie Helen Jeffries, on Monday 8 May. Maisie is a sister to Ted and Douglas. I congratulate Rob and Carla on this happy news. Eisteddfod The Junior School was well represented at the choral section of the Toowoomba Eisteddfod over the past two weeks. Every student in the Junior School sings in non-auditioned choirs, resulting in all 285 students performing at the Eisteddfod. Our non-auditioned choirs (known as Voiceworks or Tribe) achieved two first place trophies, two second place awards, a third place and several highly commended awards.

(L-R) Mitchell, James and Oliver, with Mrs Dixon and the trophy won by Tribe Junior I congratulate the boys and our music staff, Mrs Jayne Davidson, Mrs Kellie Dixon, Ms Mary Lou Fraser and Mrs Melissa Buchholz for their fine performances. I also thank all the parents who made an effort to ensure their boys were at the Thursday evening and Sunday performances. Writing Competition Our annual Writing Competition commenced this week and involves all boys for Prep to Year 6. This is an adjudicated competition with trophies, medallions and book vouchers being awarded as prizes. In an all-boys’ school, trophies for academic excellence are equally important as trophies for sporting achievement. I wish all the boys well for this academic endeavour.

Regards

Scott Campbell Head of Junior School

From the Deputy Head of Junior School

Active Kids are Smarter Kids National Walk Safely to School Day is on Friday 19 May, 2017. Now in its 18th year, it is a campaign and annual event when all primary school children, their parents and carers are encouraged to walk and commute regularly and safely to school. Australian children are becoming less active. Children who are regularly physically active are healthier, perform better academically and less likely to be obese or overweight. Walking regularly is a good exercise because it can be built in to our daily routines. Nude Food Day Nude Food Day occurs each Tuesday in the Junior School. The boys are encouraged to bring to school food that is not prepacked for morning tea and lunch. There are two main reasons for implementing this idea. One is to promote healthy eating, good nutrition and limit the intake of processed foods. The other reason is environmental, where the amount of wrapping (paper/plastic) used is reduced. We hope that parents will continue to support this initiative. Food ideas include pieces of fruit and vegetables, salads, sandwiches, pasta, wraps and ham and cheese roll-ups. Junior School Liaison Group There are a number of Year 12 students visiting the Prep to Year 3 classrooms during the DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) session each day after lunch. It is an opportunity for the older boys to provide encouragement and support for the Junior School boys in their reading program. These Year 12 students have opted to do this in their own time and will assist with the reading programme in the classroom for the year. It involves one-on-one reading with a particular boy or a small group of boys in the class. School Tracksuits The School tracksuit was updated some time ago, from an older, dated version to the new, more contemporary one. The phase out / phase in process has occurred over the past eighteen months. The newer, navy tracksuit is the only one that boys can now wear. Please refer to the photographs below.

From the Head of Teaching and Learning

Under Eights’ Week Next week our Prep to Year 2 boys will be participating in Under Eights’ Week. Under Eights’ Week has been running for 60 years across Queensland. The purpose is to celebrate childhood and promote the importance of the early – years’ education. The theme this year is “Children are playing Country to Coast – Inspiring learning in the early years through play”. On Wednesday, our boys will be involved in activities with students from Fairholme and Glennie. Writing Competition 2017 The 2017 writing competition commenced this week with final submissions due in the second last week of term. Each boy in the Junior School will participate and will earn points for their House. It is important to note that all writing will take place at school. Judging will occur in the last week of term and the results will be announced in the first week of next term. The following prizes will be awarded at the Academic Awards Assembly in week two:

First place from each class will receive a trophy

Second and third place from each class will receive a medallion.

Three Highly Commended certificates will be awarded in each class. On Wednesday 24 May, Mrs MacFarlane, Mrs Cantle and Mrs Jones will be accompanying three teams to AB Paterson College, Gold Coast to participate in the Queensland Primary Da Vinci Decathlon. We wish them every success and look forward to hearing about the challenges they had to solve. What is the Da Vinci Decathlon? Leonardo Da Vinci (1452-1519) was one of the world’s greatest thinkers and scholars. His career spanned an enormous range of disciplines: art, architecture, poetry, academics, anatomy, hydrodynamics, mechanical and military engineering, mathematics, and astronomy. He demonstrated a superior ability to perceive the interconnected nature of knowledge and embraced learning with a lifelong passion and determination to uncover what was hitherto unknown by his society. His bold and imaginative intellectual legacy is a permanent challenge for the leaders and thinkers of the twenty-first century. The Da Vinci Decathlon is an academic interschool Gala Day in the spirit of an Olympic Decathlon. Students are required to complete a series of challenging tasks of an academic nature in a timeframe working in teams of eight. Students participate in activities in the following disciplines: Mathematics, English, Science, Code Breaking, Engineering Challenge, Forensic Sleuths, Creative Producers, Art and Poetry, Games of Strategy and General Knowledge. The tasks are exciting and challenging with a particular emphasis on higher order thinking skills. More information can be found at www.davincidecathlon.com. Junior School Supporters’ Group

Parents and Friends’ Association and Junior School Supporters’ Group meeting dates: Term 2 7.00pm Tuesday 30 May Week 7A Parents and Friends’ Association Meeting, Pavilion The Mothers’ Day stall was our first event for Term 2 and was vibrantly co-ordinated by Nikki Marsden and her team of parents. The boys’ smiles really do say it all about this event and it almost sold out of stock making it a very successful day. Sincere thanks to the parents and friends of TGS Junior who donated gifts. Thank you Nikki for your smiling face and hard work to bring this event together. The Mothers’ Day Breakfast was a celebratory beautiful morning for the Junior School mums and sons. The catering by “Impressions on Scott” and the colourful gerbera’s from Steve and Renee Randall really made for a special morning. These events cannot occur without a significant contribution from parents, boys and the committee. Thank you to the dads who assisted with set up the evening before and the parent helpers on the morning and with pack up. In particular, Melissa Buckley and Robyn Dunn deserve special mention. Rhonda Wilkie President, Junior School Supporters' Group

Toowoomba Eisteddfod (Part 1) All boys from Prep – Year 6 sung at the Toowoomba Eisteddfod. We would like to thank Mrs Bucholz for accompanying all of our choral groups this year, and parents and school staff for ensuring the boys were ready to perform. The standard in the choral sections this year was particularly high and we commend the boys for their performances. This year we achieved some very good results, and the boys should be proud of the effort they put in leading up to their performances. None of our groups are auditioned choirs, which makes this a little more special for all boys. Our Voiceworks groups are full cohort groups, and anyone who would like to join the Tribe or Tribe Junior is always welcomed. Of particular mention is the Tribe Junior group, which placed 1st in their section. This is a new choral group for boys in Years 2 and 3. An excellent achievement, congratulations on your fine work boys! 1st – Tribe Junior (Primary School Prep - 4B Grade) 1st – Voiceworks 5 (Primary School B Grade) 2nd – Voiceworks 5 (Primary School Boys’ Choir) 2nd – Voiceworks 2/3 (Primary School Prep - 4 A Grade) 3rd – Voiceworks 4 (Primary School Boys’ Choir) Highly Commended - Tribe (Primary School Gospel or Spiritual Choir) Highly Commended – Voiceworks Prep/1(Primary School Prep - 4 B Grade)

Musicians’ Cup Our annual Junior School Musicians’ Cup will be held on Thursday 20 July (Term 3, week 2). Please note that this date is different to what may appear in the school diary or calendars and has been changed to suit student and music staff availabilities. The Musicians’ Cup is an adjudicated event held in high regard within our Junior School. All instrumental students, from Years 4 to 6, with a minimum of twelve months tuition on their instrument, are welcome to nominate to compete. Boys who are learning more than one instrument are able to nominate to compete on each instrument. It would be advised that musicians who are considering entering the Musicians’ Cup would start to discuss this and their chosen repertoire with their Music Tutor. A letter with more information, as well as nomination form will be sent home in the coming weeks.

Musicians’ Concert Our Term 2 Musicians’ Concert will be held on 25 May, commencing at 2.10pm in the Junior School Hall. Musicians’ Concerts are a wonderful way for boys to enjoy performing music to a supportive audience. Parents, family and friends are most welcome to attend these concerts. Boys who have nominated should check the Music Notice board (between the music room and the hall) to see if they have been included in the concert. Unfortunately, not all nominations can be included due to the large number of nominations received each term. If your son has not been included in the concert we will email through an assembly performance date. Upcoming Performances Part 2 of the Eisteddfod will involve all instrumental ensembles performing. This part of the Eisteddfod will take place in early Term 3. Once dates have been confirmed, these will be conveyed to parents. GPS Music Day of Excellence will be held at Nudgee this year on 1 August. This event is for our musicians from Years 5 – 7. As part of the process, TGS Music staff and Tutors will nominate boys to be included in the GPS Choir, GPS Concert Band and GPS String Ensemble. Boys who are accepted into these ensembles will be notified towards the end of the term.
