The Middlesex High varsity girls basketball team is off to a 2-0 start in Tidewater District action with an 88-43 win over visiting Mathews on January 13. “We talked after the West Point game and before the Mathews game and the girls said they wanted to send a message to the teams in the district that we are the team to beat,” said MHS coach William Griffin. “We put the press and the defense to them. Our main goal was to show the district why we are a tough team,” Griffin said. “We’ve been a little lax in some earlier games. “Our press is very successful, especially when Mecca Bowens is in, and Dannie Green plays it well subbing for her.” Griffin added he was “impressed” by the strength of his bench. Cierra Robinson had 10 points and eight rebounds in about nine minutes on the court against Mathews. Patricia Price, who is still recovering from an ankle injury, had 9 points in about 12 minutes. “She’s getting in shape. Hopefully, by Friday, she’ll be up to full speed,” said Griffin. Sharnell Burnett, who has scored more than 1,000 points during her career at MHS, added another 25 points including six 3-pointers. Freshman Sherita Burse tallied 19 points, Ashley Robinson had 8, and Mecca Bowens scored 5 before fouling out. Amber Collier added 4 points, Joy Burrell 3, and De’Nelle Reed 1. Kashae Beverley had about 15 rebounds in 16 minutes of play. “It was a team effort,” said Griffin. The Lady Chargers held Mathews to four points in the first quarter and two of them were on a technicality regarding the scorebook. “We’re looking forward to playing King William (9-4). We feel like they are the team we have to beat in the district,” said Griffin. King William blasted Group AA New Kent 65-42 Monday night. The Lady Chargers (2-0, 10-4) will host King William tonight, January 20, and will host Essex on Friday. JV games begin at 6 p.m. and are followed by the var- sity games at 7:30 p.m. On Monday, January 24, at 6 p.m., only the varsity Lady Char- gers play at King and Queen in their fourth district game of the year. Against West Point, Travis Crump paced MHS with 15 points, Antonio Hodges and Colin McFerrin contributed 6 points apiece, and Michael Bur- nett scored 5. The high scorers in the win over Essex were Burnett with 8 points and Trevin Baylor and Matt Durrette with 6 points each. Crump came alive again in the game against Mathews with 13 points, Burnett and McFerrin scored 8 each, and Baylor had 6. “What pleased me the most was that we won all these games on the road,” said MHS coach George Hutchenson. “Also, for the first time this season, we hit over 50 percent from the free throw line in a game.” Against Mathews, the Char- gers hit 13 out of 20 from the charity strip. The Chargers played King Wil- liam Tuesday night and will take a fairly long break for exams. MHS will host King and Queen on Friday, January 28. MHS JVs up district mark to 2-0 The Middlesex High junior varsity girls basketball team defeated visiting Mathew 42- 17on January 13 to notch its second Tidewater District win. “We had a slow start, but then our shots started to fall,” said MHS coach Stacy Sterne. Ashae Burnett led the JV Lady Chargers with 16 points, Caitlin Groseclose had 7, Oshae Young 5, Nikie Dixon 4, and Tameka White 3. Candyce Davis, Katrina Reed and Ashley Figg each added 2 points, and Tekia Peters had one. K. of C. Council 11210 sponsors this event in coopera-tion with the Middlesex County Department of Recreation and Parks and the Middlesex Youth Basketball League.

On January 11, semifi nalists from Middlesex Elementary School and St. Clare Walker Middle School competed for the school championship slot in the National Geography Bee spon-sored by MCPS Department of Gifted Education.

At 9 a.m. all of the fourth and fi fth grade classes at MES watched eagerly as 10 of their fellow classmates participated in the Geography Bee on the school stage.

Those MES students who competed were: Victor Knez, Sam Hagen, Josh Stallings, Grayson Johnson, Sarah Guill, Morgan Duke, Cullen Johnson, Jeremy Collier, Manuel Balderas and Jordan Walton. Each semifi -nalist earned a place on stage by winning classroom bees held in the social studies classes of Kim Aliff and Vicky Rogers.

Fifth-grader Sam Hagen won the tie-breaker round against Victor Knez. After the contest, Sam remarked with surprise

that he “never thought all those family trips would pay off!” He was wearing a Niagara Falls t-shirt on the morning he won.

At St. Clare Walker Middle School, winners from the social studies classes of Bonita Bruce, Suzanne Smith and Jessica White met in the teacher’s lunchroom to vie for the championship slot.

Scott Payne narrowly defeated Parker Ward (runner-up) for the championship that same after-noon.

Other students who par-ticipated included Casey Davis, Lindsay Matthews, Charley Riley, Hunter Banks, Bailey Hall, Leah Therrien and Timmy Coker. Results of a written exam taken after the bee may qualify both Sam and Scott to represent Middlesex at the state fi nals in April. The overall winners from the State Geography Bee then will compete for a $25,000 col-lege scholarship in the national round at the end of May in Wash-ington, D.C.

The Aylett Country Day School Student Council Association is a student-run organization of elected representatives from the middle school, grades 6-8. In addition to charity drives and social functions such as dances and Spirit Week, the students are involved in school and community service. Recently, the group helped to update the address database for the alumni offi ce and completed a canned food drive for King and Queen County for Thanksgiving. Over 100 stockings were prepared for donation to The Salvation Army. The student council also sponsors the Aylett Big Brother/Big Sister Program, which is an opportunity for all students to interact with one another help-ing to maintain the family environment while allowing older students to serve as mentors for younger ones. The SCA consists of, front from left, Gene McCarthy, George Michos and Martin Dille; back row, Mary Carol Davis, Meredith Trible, Corbin Brooks and Ryan Martin.

Robert Walker of Deltaville will attend the Presidential Classroom program, March 5-12, in Washington, D.C.

Presidential Classroom (PC), the leader in civic education, provides the best and brightest high school juniors and seniors unprecedented access to the lead-ers who shape America’s public policy. Participants explore the role the government, military and private sector play in plan-ning and executing defense and homeland security policy.

During the week-long pro-gram, PC scholars interact with Washington insiders, including members of Congress, presiden-tial appointees, senior military

offi cials, top business leaders and journalists. Students observe the U.S. Congress in action, visit congressional offi ces and debate current issues with peers from the United States and abroad.

They also visit the renowned sites of our nation’s capital such as the White House (by special invitation), the U.S. Department of State and Arlington National Cemetery.

Additional program high-lights include a seminar on the fl oor of the U.S. House of Representatives, an exclusive tour of the Pentagon and visits to the Federal Bureau of Inves-tigation Training Academy and Manassas National Battlefi eld in Virginia.

Eighth grade students in Brandon Smith’s Techno-Systems Technology class at St. Clare Walker Middle School pose just before racing the CO2 powered dragsters built by students Trey Johnson and Jake Fletcher. Johnson and Fletcher just completed Surface Transportation Level 2, which gives them a hands-on experience using hand and power tools. It also gives them the chance to design, produce and test their dragsters. The students spent three weeks sketching and designing, making revisions and eventually completing a pair of fi nal working drawings. They then moved into the production process and fi nished off their learning experiences with a testing phase as well as head to head racing. Fletcher edged Johnson’s dragster by less than .2 seconds for the win. The aerodynamic effi ciency of their race cars was tested in the class’s wind tunnel. The test revealed the overall drag of their car as well as the axle lift/down force that was produced. Pictured above are, Fletcher, (center, left) with Johnson (center, right) and the rest of Smith’s class. (Photo by Brandon Smith)

TOWN OF URBANNAIMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT

YOUR DRINKING WATER

Tests Showed Coliform Bacteria in the Town of Urbanna Water System

Our water system recently violated a drinking water standard. Although this incident was not an emergency, as our customers, you have a right to know what happened and what we did to correct this situation.

We routinely monitor for drinking water contaminants. We took fi ve distribution samples to test for the presence of total coliform bacteria for the month of November 2004 monitoring period. All fi ve samples showed the presence of total coliform bacteria. The standard is that no more than one sample per month may do so.

What should I do?

You do not need to boil your water or take other corrective ac-tions. However, if you have specifi c health concerns, consult your doctor.

People with severely compromised immune systems, infants, and some elderly may be at increased risk. These people should seek advice about drinking water from their health care provid-ers. General guidelines on ways to lessen the risk of infection by microbes are available from EPA’s Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 1 (800) 426-4791.

What does this mean?

This is not an emergency. If it had been, you would have been notifi ed immediately. Coliform bacteria are generally not harm-ful themselves. Coliforms are bacteria which are naturally present in the environment and are used as an indicator that other, potentially-harmful, bacteria may be present. Coliforms were found in more samples than allowed and this was a warning of potential problems.

Usually, coliforms are a sign that there could be a problem with the system’s treatment or distribution system (pipes). Whenever we detect coliform bacteria in any sample, we do follow-up testing to see if other bacteria of greater concern, such as fecal coliform or E. coli, are present. We did not fi nd any of these bacteria in our subsequent testing.

What happened?

During the month of November 2004, the routine sample col-lected on November 22nd tested positive for total coliform bacteria. Four repeat samples were collected on December 1, 2004 and all tested positive for total coliform bacteria.

What has been done?

A chlorination system was installed on December 10, 2004. Chlorine solution is being injected in the water line going to the elevated storage tank from Well #5. On December 21, 2004 one routine sample was collected from the distribution system and tested negative for total coliform bacteria. Four more routine samples were collected from the distribution system on December 27, 2004, in accordance with the approved Bac-teriological Sample Siting Plan and Section 12 VAC 5-590-380 D5 of the Waterworks Regulations and all tested negative for total coliform bacteria. On January 10th, one routine sample was collected from the distribution system and tested negative for total coliform bacteria.

She also noted the contribution of the program sponsors—Riverside Health-care System, Virginia Health Services, Cumberland Hospital, and Rappahannock General Hospital—at whose facilities the

practical nursing students had the opportunity to gain valuable clinical experience.

“Without their help, we could not have implemented the pro-gram,” said Lucy. “This expan-sion of the practical nursing program to the Warsaw Campus is part of RCC’s commitment to meeting the critical shortage of trained nurses in the area.”

Speakers at the ceremony included Janice Pierson, general supervisor for the Essex County Public School System; LPN class representative Joan Alford; and Nuala Glennon, dean of the Glenns Campus.

Recalling the practical nurse’s pledge to “devote my life to service, and to the high ideals of the nursing profession,” Glennon stated, “There is no more noble endeavor than to care for the sick.” She added words of praise for the families of the graduating class, without whose support these students would not have been able to achieve this out-standing success.

RCC’s new Warsaw Campus practical nursing program graduates include, front row from left, Tyanthia Doggett, Sharon Jones, Sabrina Rich and Lori Rice; second row, Renarda Newton, Danielle Lee, Joan Alford, Maureen Carter, Betsy Chinn, Lori Williams, Bonnie Saunders and Regina Long; third row, Glenns program coordinator Dianne Lucy, Kamilah Shabazz, Monica Ward, Stephanie Francis, Amanda Thornton, Shereeta Taylor and Warsaw program coordinator Marlene Howard.

Deltaville Boatyard is pleased to announce that Caleb Thomp-son and Jim Rice recently completed the Standards Accreditation course offered by the American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC).

The 3-day course is one that provides marine services, man-agement and senior level marine executives a basic understanding of core ABYC standards. ABYC has been developing, writing and updating the voluntary safety standards for boat building and repair in the United States for nearly 90 years and is actively involved with the development of international standards as well as certifi cation programs for marine technicians.

Having completed the course and having passed the exam, Thompson and Jim are now two of a growing group of special-ists in the country whose com-mitment to service excellence means better customer service for the recreational boaters.

“At Deltaville Boatyard, we believe that enrolling our managers as well as our marine technicians in ABYC’s training programs means that our cus-tomers will enjoy an even higher degree of satisfaction,” said

owner Keith Ruse. “But, what it really takes is the commitment of our employees to be able to advance their own knowledge by attending an ABYC program. We’re proud of Mr. Thompson and Mr. Rice and what it means to Deltaville Boatyard.”

ABYC’s Standards Accredita-tion Course is part of ABYC’s “Convenience Learning” cur-riculum, an expanding group of courses presented on-site to all types of companies and all levels of personnel. “What we offer is basically a comprehen-sive course of study and a chal-lenging accreditation test,” says Skip Burdon, ABYC’s president. “When people like Mr. Thomp-son and Mr. Rice complete the process and become accredited, they can feel confi dent in their ability to apply their understand-ing of the approach ABYC has taken in standards development as a management and even prob-lem solving tool.”
