a message -
to the man
who is
“thinking ”
for Christmas
. . . because we believe in ourselves and our fine furs, we feel free to offer you this bit of advice:
don’t just come to BON-TON, happily make your selection
and go home satisfied— that would be by far the easiest,
wisest thing to do but it wouldn’t prove our point. No. Go,
first, to our competitors, here, there, anywhere. Look at their
furs, ask them questions, note the prices— THEN come to
BON-TON. Do the same here— look, ask, note prices. You’ll
be absolutely amazed. Truly, you'll wonder how we can do it—
and here’s the reason: we are our own pelt buyers, designers,
craftsmen and merchandisers. We pay not one extra cent
for these middle-man operations and consequently, neither
do you. It’s an old, old story with BON-TON customers but
If you’re new to us, follow the above suggestion— make the
rounds, then come to BON-TON for the “buy” of your life!

GARDEN COLUMNLAST CHANCE FOR PLANTING SPRING FLOWERING BULBS
Is it too la te to p la n t sprin- flow ering bulbs? This question often arises du rin g D ecem ber, especially w hen the first snow or cold snap rem inds us th a t w in te r is alm ost here.
You can p la n t spring-flow ering bulbs, such as daffodills, tu lips, crocus and o ther sm all bulbs, any tim e the ground is no t frozen in D ecem ber or even J a n u a ry and still get flowers n ex t spring. They m ay not be as large as those p lan ted earlier, how ever.
L ate bulb p lan tings should be i m ulched w ith several inches of leaves or sa lt hay to encourage root g row th and p rev en t heav ing du ring the w inter.
If the soil freezes solid and the I bulbs still a re no t p lan ted , you s till have a chance to save face. P o t them in large flow er pots, then sto re the pots in w ooden boxes in an unheated garage.
S urround the pots w ith leaves in the boxes to p rev en t them from freezing and d ry ing out. You can use som e of these pots ! fo r indoor forcing in M arch or A pril, o r p lunge the pots in soil i outdoors du rin g March.
H ardy sp ring bulbs req u ire several m onths of low te m p era tu res fo r root g row th and bud developm ent. They w ill not flower indoors or out w ith o u t th is low- te m p era tu re trea tm en t.
PROTECT PERENNIALSFROM WINTER DAMAGE
L ast W in ter w as a severe one for peren n ia l gardens in m any p arts of N ew Jersey. C h ry san th em um s, gaillard ias, delph in ium s and o ther perenn ials w ere heaved from the soil by a lte rn a te freezing and thaw ing.
These looses can be g rea tly r e duced th is w in te r by m ulching you r flower garden in la te Decem ber. The soil tem p era tu re should be low enough by th en so th a t g row th w ill have hardened fo r the w in ter. M ulching too early m akes p lan ts tender.
Christmas tree boughs, s a l t ! hay, or straw are good w inter mulches for the flower garden. Work salt hay or straw around the crowns of the plants and a little over the top.
Leaves should no t be used because they pack, exclude air, and cause p lan ts to rot.
Rose bushes should be p ro tected by m ounding soil over the crow ns of the p lan ts to a dep th of 6 to 8 inches. This can be done now before the soil freezes. I t is b e tte r to b ring in ex tra soil for th is purpose ra th e r th a n expose' the roots by scooping soil from around each plant.
P ru n e back any long canes on bush roses to about 2 feet to p re ven t th e ir being buffeted by w in te r w inds. W ait u n til about A pril 1 for a general p ru n in g of roses, since canes w ill p robab ly freeze back several inches du ring the w in ter. The m ounds of soil from roses and the p ren n ia l garden m ulch can laso be rem oved about A pril 1.PRUNING ONLY TREATMENT
FOR SPRUCE. FOR CANKERIf you r sp ruce trees o r o ther
everg reens have been tra n s p lan ted w ith in the p ast 4 o r 5 years, they m ay look p re tty m o th -ea ten rig h t now. B u t the chances are th a t poor root system s, w rong p lan tin g site, or
som ething o ther than d isease is the cause o f d isappoin ting grow th.
O n the o ther hand, if you have ; old, well estab lished spruce or fir trees, they m ay have canker ' disease. As you look up th rough j the tree, are th e re dead branches scattered th rough the low er and m iddle p a rts o f the tree?
The chances are th a t canker d isease is the cause.
B ranches covered w ith brow n, dead needles m ay possibly be the resu lt of shed ing-out by the branches above. B ut if can k er is the cause of death , the re w ill be a definite, sunken canker in the branch.
Also, resin or p itch w ill be qu ite ev iden t on the cankered area. Som etim es the re is so m uch resin it 'drips to branches below.
T here is no sp ray and no chem ical to control the diseae or p ro tec t you r tree. The only th ing you can do is p ru n e or cu t the diseased b ranches from the tree. And to help p rev e n t spread ing the d isease to o the r b ranches d u ring the p ru n in g operation, you should p ru n e du rin g D ecem ber, Ja n u a ry , o r F ebruary .
Rem ove the branches by cu tting flush w ith the m ain trunk , even though th e re is still som e life in the sick branch. If th e re is a good flow of resin from the cu t surface on the trunk , no w ound-dressing is necessary. On the o ther hand, if the cu t is fa irly dry, cover it w ith orange shellac or tree w ound paint.
INSECTS MAY MOVE INWITH FIREPLACE WOOD
Several d iffe ren t types of in sects m ay en te r y o u r hom e in fireplace wood th ro u g h o u t the w in te r season.
These insects can be nuisance pests b u t they are not likely to becom e estab lished as dam aging pests in y o u r hom e as a resu lt of b ring ing in fireplace wood.
B ark beetles are ap t to em erge from sm alle r pieces of logs. These beetles m ay ap p ear in ra th e r la rg e r num bers and fly abou t the home, if in fested wood has been in the room fo r several w eeks.
V arious long-horned beetles m ight appear in the hom e and w ill p robab ly be noticed around w indow s, w hich they are a t trac ted to.
C a rp en te r an ts and te rm ites also appear around y o u r firewood. T erm ites m ust m a in ta in a contact w ith the g round to ob ta in m oisture. U nless the w ood is sto red on a d ir t floor in a basem ent the term ites will soon die.
To p rev en t th e -a p p e a ra n c e of these u n in v ited guests in you r hom e it is best not to b ring th e firewood in to the h ea ted room m ore than several days before it is to be burned .
My God shall supply every need of yours.— (P h il. 4 :19).
As we a ttu n e ou rse lv es to th e w isdom of the C h ris t, as b a lan ce is b ro u g h t ab o u t in o u r a ffa irs , we find th a t our needs a re m et in a p e rfe c t way.
