Vol. 18, Issue 4/December 2018 From the Desk of the Director Festive decorations, scrumptious food, and words of cheer fill the air during this special time of year. It takes me right back to the days of baking cut-out Christmas cookies with my momwatching her mix and roll out the dough, using my favorite cut-outs, spreading buttercream frosting, and decorating with colorful sprinkles over the freshly baked cookies. I can almost smell the sweet aroma that only baking can muster while anticipating the taste of the very first cookie. Every one of those moments instilled a love of baking that mom didnt even realize she was inspiring. Because of these stolen moments in the kitchen with mom, baking became a place of calm and a way to show love. I baked for my kidsbirthdays and school events, holidays, and for students in the schools where I taught. In fact, this past September, I ran into two of my former students who are now 24 years old, and during our conversation, one of the young men asked if I still made chocolate chip cookies from scratch like I used to. The smile just grew on my face as I ran back to my car to give them two of those same cookies that I had made the night before for a READ event. And just like that, we were back in time in a classroom eating cookies together. The memories that are created by small gestures last a lifetime. Time spent together, conversations shared, watching and learning, and knowing someone cares are all recognized results of those who work with students in our Mentor Program. Students building multiple skills by reading to seniors in nursing homes creates bonds and relationships that grow stronger with each READing STARS visit. 2 READ Association of Saginaw County________________________________________________________________

Welcome Karen

The READ Association welcomes Karen Weis as our Literacy Support Specialist. She

comes with 10+ years of experience as a classroom teacher as well as 20+ years of serving as a tutor in her own business. Karen has

played a vital role in the development, operation, and instruction of Raising Readers Academy as well as many other essential tasks. You may see her friendly face and positive attitude at trainings, community expos, and helping mentors in the office. Karen practices a “good, better, best” philosophy. The READ Association is very pleased to have her on board and welcomes you to come by to meet her.

Raising Readers Academy began three separate sessions, two at the CAN Council and one at the Boys and Girls Club, in mid-September. This new family literacy program is a unique, twelve-week program designed to mentor and empower parents to see themselves as their child’s first reading teacher by engaging in literacy activities which can be duplicated and expanded upon at home. Both parents/guardians and children have enjoyed learning literacy skills, visiting Hoyt Library, and discovering how reading can be incorporated into everyday activities. The READ Association is grateful for funding provided by Dow Chemical ($10,000); Saginaw Community Foundation ($10,000); Frankenmuth Credit Union ($5,000); Wirt-Rivette Group-through Stevens Worldwide Van Lines ($5,000); Frances Goll Mills Fund ($3,500) Chemical Bank ($2,000); Nickless Memorial Foundation ($1,250); Wickson-Link Memorial Foundation ($1,250); as well as individual donations.

The READing STARS program has been in operation since the beginning of October with five schools traveling to five nursing homes on a weekly basis to read to residents of each location through the month of May. Partnering groups include the following: Stone Elementary to Samaritas Senior Living; Herig Elementary to Hoyt Nursing and Rehab Center; Zilwaukee Elementary to Great Lakes PACE; Weiss Elementary to Saginaw Senior Care & Rehab; and Kempton Elementary to Bickford Senior Living. Students, teachers, residents have enjoyed their visits which are filled with reading stories, conversations, and building intergenerational relationships. The daily

bus trips that occur five days per week are supported substantially by in-kind service from STARS (Saginaw Transit Authority Regional Services). Additional travel and other expenses are generously sponsored by the Dow Corning Donor Advised Fund administered by the

Saginaw Community Foundation ($8,000); Frances Goll Mills Fund ($2,000); as well as individual donors.

The READ Association appreciates the support of local agencies, schools, and donors who have supported our new programs with their generous contributions, time, and cooperation.

READ Office Move

Fall Orientation — Comprehension Tips Nearly 100 volunteers met at the Castle Museum and Peace Lutheran Church for the 2018 Fall Mentor Orientation

to receive a copy of the new training manual and listen to how comprehension can be accessed through conversation. They learned that asking questions and giving students time to answer them after thinking helps the reader to focus on and reinforce what they know. Examples include the following:

What do you know already know about the topic? What else do you want to learn? What would you do next if you were the main character? Why? Try to picture what is going to happen next in the story by closing your eyes. What do you see? How do you think the character felt after that happened? Why?

If you were unable to attend and would like to have a copy of the new manual and hear about new updates, please call the office at 989-755-8402.

Give the Gift of READing this Season

Center Spotlight

Mentors at Westdale Elementary focus on reading fluently with their children. Students are timed for one minute on a first-time or “cold” read and then a second time. Personal graphs are managed by students to show their improvement from one read to the other. Reading text multiple times helps students become familiar and more fluent in their reading.
