COMMITTEE REPORTS Marketing Committee Chair is Topher Ruxton

Home Show marketing was great! We had success with each of the marketing categories, and even sold some booths to people who caught the attention of the coffee sleeves we implemented this year!

1. Breaking Skagit is giving us an extra month for free to promote our videos and links. Our next set of videos will focus on some scare tactics (What happens when you hire uninsured, unlicensed workers, etc) We will try to get some quote from folks who have experienced this. We also still need some quotes from members at meetings to use to complete the membership video. If you have a good quote, please email a high quality photo of yourself, as well as the quote, so we can include it in the video.

2. Topher will setup a SICBA Vimeo account, so we can offer custom video players, which would look nice embedded onto websites, plus we can include a call to action button at the end that links to any page we send it too.

3. Getting members to join our Find A Pro Facebook Group, we are holding a contest to win some SICBA Swag! Once we hit the 100 member milestone, we will do a live drawing. Please feel free to share this link: https://www.facebook.com/groups/findapro To get members to join, or have a representative join with prior approval.

4. We have been updating individual pages on the SICBA.org website with Meta tags that help boost SEO (Search Engine Optimization)

5. Next Meeting - May 10th @ 12pm

Membership Committee Chair is Roy Mureno May flowers are on the way! SICBA’s Spring Membership Drive was a success – as of this writing, 3 recruiters have qualified for our Day at the Races reward event by recruiting 2 new members each between January 1st and April 30th of this year. Thank you to all of the members who are actively recruiting and to the sponsors of this event, Builders Insurance Group, No 7 Development, and Generac Power Systems Inc. As part of the Spring Drive, the Membership Committee issued a challenge to the Board of Directors – six teams were formed to compete in the Run For the Roses Challenge to recruit the most members during the month of April. The winners will be announced at SICBA’s annual Awards Banquet. Our retention is over 90% and keeps going up! We still need members to actively recruit, so contact Jonathan or Membership Chair Roy Mureno if you are interested in being a part of our recruitment team – the Membership Committee is here to help!

Home Show committee Co-Chair: Ben Sousa • Attendance was up 300 people from 2017. • Net revenue was over projected goal. • Reviewed vendor/volunteer/attendee feedback and will address for improvements as best we can for

the 2019 Home Show. • Looked at this year’s changes and what was thought to work and what didn’t as well as how to

improve the 2019 Home Show. • Our next meeting will be May 15th at 8am at the SICBA office and I encourage you to attend and help

plan the 2019 Show!

Home Tour Committee Chair is Curtis Banta Things are looking exciting for our annual Home Tour. We set the dates, and the Home Tour will be Sep. 14, 15, 16 this year. We’re hoping for a record number of home entries in the tour this year, so if you are a builder or know a builder encourage them to put their project on the tour this year. We also opened the tour up to commercial projects this year, or anything else you have! Want to help out on the Home tour committee? Our next meeting is May 14th, 3:00 PM at the SICBA Office.

Events Committee

Chair is Kim Piazza The April networking event held on April 17th and hosted by Ferguson and Wolf, at the Ferguson Showroom was a great success. Members were treated to culinary delights from crab cakes and shrimp to brownies and strawberry shortcake. Bertelson Winery provided the tasty beverages. Wolf gave away a beautiful table top convection oven, won by Gary Wray. You never know what kind of goodies will be given away at these great events! You cannot win if you don't attend, so make sure to attend!

Our annual awards banquet is coming up on Thursday, May 17th from 5:30pm-8:30pm, to be held at Greenfield Farms, catered by LaConner Seafood and Prime Rib House. The theme is SICBA does Derby (as in Kentucky Derby) so join the festivities and wear a hat! Make sure to visit the website, SICBAEvents.com and register for this great event. See you there!!

Golf Committee Chair is Scott Rainwater We are less than 3 months away from the SICBA Golf Tournament! Be sure to get your team signed up and your sponsorship locked in before June 22nd! We are always looking to add people to our committee and are in need of volunteers for the day of the tournament. Who wouldn’t want to hang out in the sunshine for the day? Our next committee meeting will be May 3rd at 3pm at the SICBA office! Come join the fun.

New Tax Law May Increase Developers’ Sewer and Water Costs

Even after a significant reduction in their corporate tax rate, some utility companies are interpreting a little-known tax change in a way that is forcing developers to pay substantially more for contributions in aid of construction (CIACs).

Under the old tax law, some CIACs — such as sewage infrastructure or cash payments made to utilities for extending water lines — were not included in the utility’s gross income. This valuable shelter was established for CIACs in legislation enacted in 1996. The tax reform law enacted last year removed this exception, making these contributions taxable to the utility—if the utility is a privately-owned, for-profit entity.

In some states, affected utilities have begun to notify developers that the utility will pass this new tax liability to the builder. In Pennsylvania, for example, some developers have reported that their utility has begun requiring a 40% CIAC surcharge. A utility in South Carolina, meanwhile, is seeking a 31.8% CIAC surcharge.

In other states, the utilities are turning to the relevant public utility commission for guidance on how to implement these tax changes. It is likely that the surcharges seen in Pennsylvania and South Carolina will arise in other states. NAHB urges developers who build in an area served by a private, for-profit water utility to closely monitor their state public utility commission.

The intent of this tax change was not to impose a new fee on development, but rather to put for-profit utilities on parity with any other business. Unfortunately, some utilities are abusing their market power to pass this charge to the developer—despite the fact that the utility received a net tax cut from the new tax law.

NAHB is actively working with affected states and engaged in conversations with Congress to remedy the situation. If left unchecked, this unintended consequence of the new tax law will only put more strain on the housing market and push more and more families further from the dream of homeownership.

While there aren’t many privately owned utility systems in either county, there are a few and this tax could affect them. Please keep close watch on your costs and if they go up because of this new tax, please let me know. [email protected] or phone (360) 488-4078

Dinner at Ferguson Bath, Kitchen and Lighting Gallery was fun and eventful as always. Everyone that attended had a great time and was able to network with their fellow members. I know some business was conducted as a result of the networking so if you are missing our member mixers, you are missing a golden opportunity to network with fellow members and possibly generate some business. Not guaranteed – but it does happen as a result of someone knowing who you are and what you do. The food was prepared in their fabulous demonstration kitchen and was very good. Everyone commented on how good everything was. We were able to introduce a couple of new members and welcome them to the association and we did our normal business that we must conduct each month. We held our drawings and the lucky winner of the Renewal Drawing was The Drain Doctor and they will get a free dinner at our next event. The winner of the Membership Bonus Drawing was Integrity Electric and if they had been present, they would have taken home $950. So, the Membership Bonus Drawing for the May 17th Awards Dinner will be $1000 – but you must be present to win. Make your reservations either online, or by calling the office at (360) 757-6916.
