bumuhay ng isang pamilyaang part-time job.

OK o OKRAY?Ni Lea G. Botones

Sa tatanda na ba naman naming may laban paba kami sa mga humaharang sa amin?,” askedan elderly woman who joined the rally.

She said Arroyo should approve the mea-sure exempting them from 12 percent VATsince the money they could save would beused to buy more medicines and food for theirfamilies. Annette Vergel

Our Daily BreadOur Daily BreadOur Daily BreadOur Daily BreadOur Daily BreadSpiridon Louis isn’t well known around the world,

but he is in Greece. That’s because of what happenedin 1896 when the Olympic Games were revived inAthens.

During the competition that year, the Greeks didquite well—winning the most medals of any nation. But the event that became a source of true Greekpride was the first-ever marathon. Seventeen athletescompeted in this race of 40 kilometers (24.8 miles),but it was won by Louis—a common laborer. For hisefforts, Louis was honored by king and country, andhe became a national hero.

The apostle Paul used running a race as a pictureof the Christian life. In 1 Corinthians 9:24, he chal-lenged us not just to run but to run to win, saying,“Do you not know that those who run in a race allrun, but one receives the prize? Run in such a waythat you may obtain it.” Not only did Paul teach thisbut he lived it out. In his final epistle, he said, “Ihave fought the good fight, I have finished the race,I have kept the faith” (2/Tim. 4:7). Having finishedhis race, Paul joyfully anticipated receiving the vic-tory crown from the King of heaven.

Like Paul, run your earthly race to win—and toplease your King. — Bill Crowder

As we run in this race—As our best effort we bring—We are spurred on by the fact

That we must win for the King. —BranonThe Christian’s race is not a sprint—it’s a mara-

thon.

ELEKSYON 2010Tap idle gov’t assets for public housing – Edu

THE next administration should harness idle governmentassets – from unused lands to vacant office buildings – for pub-lic housing, Lakas Kampi CMD vice presidential candidate EduManzano said.

Housing authorities should produce an inventory of all non-performing government assets, and ascertain those holdings thatcould potentially be developed into community shelters, saidManzano, former national president of the Vice-Mayors Leagueand one-time vice-mayor of Makati City.

“They should come up with exact plans to develop the assetsfor public housing. Congress can then consciously support theplans with ample funding,” Manzano said.

For example, he said an abandoned or unoccupied multi-level government office building could be remodeled at minimalcost into affordable residential apartments for the benefit of in-formal community settlers.

He said the suitable assets could be converted into commu-nity housing by national shelter agencies on their own, or withthe help of provincial, city or municipal governments.

Manzano’s proposal was inspired partly by the UnitedKingdom’s public housing for marginal families.

State-run lenders such as the Development Bank of the Phil-ippines and the Land Bank of the Philippines could also getinvolved, Manzano said.

Boost in RP’s anti-corruption ratingseen with greater public access to info

COTABATO Rep. Emmylou Taliño-Mendoza has expressedconfidence that the country’s anti-corruption rating would get abig boost once the proposed Freedom of Information Act is fi-nally enacted.

“We are counting on the measure to improve considerablythe country’s image in terms of fighting corruption,” said Taliño-Mendoza, one of the key authors of the measure and one-timechairwoman of the House committee on public information.

“What is important is that 23 years after ratification of the1987 Constitution, we will finally have a new law enabling theorderly implementation of provisions on the public’s right togovernment information on matters of civic concern, includingall state contracts,” Taliño-Mendoza said.

Congress is set to ratify this week the bicameral conferencereport on the measure.

Taliño-Mendoza said the measure would “surely give a wholenew meaning to the constitutional right to information, rein-force public accountability and repel malfeasance.”

“We are absolutely certain this will go a long way in promot-ing greater transparency and improving governance,” she said.

The Philippines ranked 139th among 180 countries in the2009 Corruption Perceptions Index of Transparency International(TI). With a score of 2.4 points in 2009, the country’s rankingimproved slightly from 141st in 2008.

Nacionalista Party president and standard-bearer Sen. Manny Villar was wel-comed warmly by young supporters at San Pablo Elementary School. Villarjoined his vice presidential candidate Sen. Loren Legarda, who celebrated herbirthday in the said school recently.

FUELED by the rising costof sugar, the local bakers inthe country will increase theprices of loaf (600 grams) byP2.00 and pandesal (25g in10s) by P1.00 effective thismonth.

The rise in bread pricescame after sugar prices havegone up by 60 percent sinceits last price selling level.

In December, bakers ini-tially absorbed the sugar priceincreases for the benefit of theconsuming public as manybasic commodities had in-creased last holiday season.

Bakers were also optimis-

tic that the government willbe able to do something asthey expressed their intentionto import sugar to contain andbring down sugar prices inthe local market. Unfortu-nately, this did not take place.

With the recent 16 percentincrease in sugar prices justthis January alone, bakerscannot continue to hold-offany longer and are forced toincrease prices by P2.00 for600g white loaf breads andP1.00 for 10pc-pack pandesalwith baked weigh of 25g.

Members the PhilippineBaking Industry Group

(PhilBaking) will adjustprices starting next week af-ter they advised supermarketsand outlets.

Community bakeries, onthe other hand, will also ad-just their prices in the samemanner the major bakeriesadjusted their prices.

Leonardo Figueroa of thePhilippine Federation of Bak-ers Association Inc. (PFBAI)said, “Some of our commu-nity bakery-members havealready started their priceadjustment this week to copewith the spiraling cost of in-gredients particularly sugar.”

FOLLOWING the rollback of fuel pricesby two independent oil players, three moreoil firms have rolled back the prices of theirfuel yesterday.

Raffy Ledesma, public affairs officer of PetronCorp., said his company is slashing by 75centavos per liter the prices of its diesel andkerosene, while Thailand-based PTT Philip-pines said it will only implement a 75 centavosper liter rollback only on their diesel products.

Ledesma attributed the rollback to thedowntrend in international prices.

Flying V, on the other hand, said they arematching the price cut imposed by their ri-val Seaoil and Eastern Petroleum early Mon-day morning of 50 centavos per liter reduc-tion in gasoline and 75 centavos per liter forboth diesel and kerosene.

Araneta Coliseum nung Linggo.

mabigyan ng playing time.

bench.Sayang ang mga talento nila.
