ear Fellow Rotarians,I am honoured to serve
as your President for the year 2013-14. I want to thank IPP Nowroze for his stellar leadership for making it a great Rotary Year 2012-13.
The Rotary Club of Bombay is the second oldest club in India, and one of the best Social Service clubs of Bombay. Rotary teaches us a lot of things and to gain this knowledge we need to ‘Engage Rotary, Change Lives’. This is our Rotary International theme for the year. This is possible only with the three Ts of Rotary — Treasure, Time and Talent. By giving our Treasure, Time and Talent to Rotary, each one of us can ‘Make the World a Better Place’. This is the theme for my year for the Rotary Club of Bombay.
I wish to set out a few important and measurable goals in the Rotary’s Six Areas of Focus: Peace and Conflict Prevention
and Resolution Disease Prevention and Treatment Water and Sanitation Maternal and Child Health Basic Education and Literacy Economic and Community
DevelopmentEvery quarter I wish to update the
Club with the progress we make in each area of focus and internal goals, which I have stated above for our Club. Along with my Board, my Chairmen and the Committee members, I wish to set out my vision for the year.
Attendance is critical for a vibrant club. We wish to see a significantincrease in our attendance, whether it is in our regular meetings or Fellowships, or by giving some time for helping in our community services. Our Club runs various projects and
eachoneofthemisaflagshipprojectof our Club. To name a few: our oldest ‘Kohinoor’ projects are The Hasanali Tobaccowala Eye Centre and the outstanding Ajit Deshpande Medical Centre, which offers dental care, a TB unit, path lab and pediatrics department. Both of these are in Talwada. At Bhavishya Yaan, which is one of our prestigious projects, we teach computers, English and Life Skills to 600 underprivileged children of municipal schools. Old-age homes, and many more such projects are praised and have earned laurels for our Club in the Rotary world. We have to
Make the World a Better Place
D
jointly work towards the sustainable and measurable side of these projects.
We should increase women members and new members to make a vibrant club.
I am sure our large-hearted Rotary members will participate in a fundraiser, to help us raise money for sustaining our ongoing and new projects that have an impact and make a difference.
Another very important aspect of our Rotary is the Fellowship. It is a vital part of our Club, keeping the Rotary spirit alive. By getting involved and attending these Fellowships, one
will not only gain in making new friends, but many new ideas can also be created. I plan to have these Fellowships where each one of us enjoys and develops new friends.
Our regular Tuesday meetings have been another big strength of our Club. This year, we encourage members to bring ideas for interesting speakers to make each member get a take home value by attending the meetings. Diversity of speakers in all fieldsisthekeytothesuccessofourregular club meetings.
Measurable impact and keeping costs low are essentials for good governance of projects. The OfficeBearers will keep a check on all the projects quarterly or monthly so that justice is done to the old projects and we can take up new projects and reach out and help others.
Ours is an old, venerable Club. We respect tradition and also welcome change.
Again, I thank the 325 Rotarians for reposing their faith in me. I thank all theOfficeBearers and theBoardof Directors for your support in the coming year.
At the Installation we will showcase an ancient Indian story called Prince Rama’s squirrel. In the story, even a little squirrel with its enthusiasm and dedication helped build a mighty bridge, showing that every person can ‘Make the World a Better Place’.
My dear friends, we can achieve all this and more together. I look forward to the support of each one of you to reach out and ‘Make the world a Better Place’.
JAI HO!
Yours Sincerely, NIRAV SHAHPresident, Rotary Club of Bombay 2013-14

hey say that an ocean is made because of each drop of water. In the same way, you don’t need to be a big name to do some good in the world. Even the smallest of the lot can make a difference that can change the world. I know many of you are
wondering why my logo is designed using two squirrels. The squirrels are the perfect example of how even a small living being can play an essential role in the bigger things of life. I found the story very inspiring, and hope you do too.
Once Sita had been abducted, one could say that almost the entire forest came to Rama’s aid. On and on they marched, till they reached a great barrier that could almost thwart their mission—theocean.Angerfillinghismindatthisbarrier,Lord Rama threatened to dry up the ocean with the bow that Lord Brahma had given him. Afraid of what his wrath would do to her kingdom, the goddess of the ocean spoke to Rama, advising him that he ask Nala (son of Vishwakarma) to build a bridge across the ocean to reach Lanka.
Thus began the relentless work of the vanar sena (and other animals that came to his aid) in building the colossal bridge that would take Rama across the ocean to rescue Sita. In the midst of all the (organised) commotion, no one (human or monkey) seemed to notice something rather odd. A tiny squirrel was rolling in the sand and shaking it off her body so that the sand particles deposited themselves in the crevices between the rocks. However, when she was noticed and questioned, she responded, “I am doing what I can to
Make the World a Better Place — The inspiration
behind the logohelpMasterRamafindhisSita.”Onhearingthisresponse, the vanar sena laughed, not quite understanding how that would help.
Hurt, she ran with tears in her eyes. Seeing this, Rama said, “Bless the little squirrel. She is doing all she can, to the best of her ability, making her quite as great as any of you. It is not right to despise someone who isn’t as strong as you. Strength doesn’t quite matter as much as love and devotion.” Hethen gently picked the squirrel up in his hands and stroked herback.Whenhisfingersleftherfur, theycouldseethreewhite stripes across the squirrel’s back. She then called to her friends in a voice that was higher than what the sena could hear, and hundreds of squirrels came to her aid.
Slowly, along with those she had thought big and mighty, the squirrel and her friends worked hard with the sena to create the bridge. When the army had started the long walk, the squirrels stood at the shore to watch them go. At the time of their parting, Rama saw Hanuman looking at the squirrels, with a look which clearly showed his question: “Who would havethoughtwecouldn’thavefinishedthisbridgewithouttheirhelp?”Understandingwhatwasgoingthroughhismind,Rama answered, “If the cause is noble, even the smallest can makeabigdifference.”
Just as the squirrels did their bit to aid Rama in his mission, I hope that all of us are able to do all that we can to support the mission that Rotary has taken on itself, to ‘Make the world a better place’.

DG Lata Subraidu will be the Chief Guest at the first Rotarymeeting of the new Rotary Year 2013-14. President Nirav Shah will chair the meeting, to be held in the Crystal Room at the Taj Mahal Hotel. A unique fellowship will begin at 11am using storytelling, art, music and interactive sculpture.

Bombay Times called her ‘A Singing Beauty’. Times of In-dia tagged her as the ‘Indian Madonna’ and according to Film-fare, she had a voice that could move mountains. A woman who gave the female fraternity the dream of the perfect man made in india, Alisha Chinai ignited the pop revolution for over a decade. The sensual voice can rock every song from ‘Kate nahi katte’ (mr india) to ‘Bebo main Bebo’ (Kambakht ishq). Recently starring as a judge in indian idol, the gorgeous diva continues to be the undisputed queen of Indian pop music.
Our website, www.rotaryclubofbombay.org has been an integral part of our Club. But now, while the whole world is more open to accepting change, it is time that we pitch in our bit, too. We proudly present our website, with a new wrapper! Not only has the look been changed completely, it also has many functional advantages.1) Mobile savvy — The website has
been created in such a way that it is not just computer-laptop friendly, but also mobile-friendly.
2) what’s important — It’s easy to navigate and focuses on (your) highly visited sections (example: forthcoming speakers and events) and project highlights. These are some of the main features of the new website.
3) Something new — In addition
to The Gateway, there will be an e-newsletter (which will lead to the website), which will be emailed to the members.
4) Meeting online — There is a new addition to the website — the Online Attendance checker. This will enable the members to log in and check their attendance statistics immediately, on a real-time basis. It also allows the members to download the ‘Make up attendance’ form in a PDF format.
5) Archives — The content and data of the past three or four years will be carried forward to the new website, with an improved ‘search functionality’.
