Affordable Fresh Food Initiative

Installation Of Drug-FreeSchool Zone Signs

Recently CM Van Bramer joined representatives of Communities of Maspeth and Elmhurst Together(COMET), Maspeth Town Hall, as well as children, and their parents, from PS 229 to install Drug-FreeSchool Zone signs at the neighborhood school. With the school year approaching, the signs will raiseawareness and prevent the illegal use of alcohol and drugs in the vicinity of the Woodside school.

CM Van Bramer, Roe Daraio, President ofCOMET, Dick Gundlach, Community Board 2Member, Eileen Hagan, President of MaspethTown Hall, and the Haggerty family from the BigSix Towers in Woodside.

On September 3rd, Council MemberJimmy Van Bramer arrived in Charlotte,North Carolina, for the 2012 DemocraticNational Convention. In May, Van Bramerwas selected to be one of 384 delegates torepresent New York State.

Photo Left: CM Van Bramer with fellowSunnyside delegate, Tony Smolenski, ofthe United Scenic Artists Local USA 829.

On August 29th, CM Van Bramer joinedMarcel Van Ooyen, Executive Director ofGrowNYC, Bill Newlin, Executive Direc-tor of the Jacob Riis Settlement House andlocal residents to launch the borough’s firstaffordable farm fresh food program inQueensbridge Houses.

In an effort to address the lack of accessto healthy food options surroundingQueensbridge Houses, Council Member VanBramer has allocated allocated $10,000 toGrowNYC which will bring affordable, lo-cally-grown, organic produce directly to theresidents of Western Queens.

“Access to healthy food options can bedifficult for some residents to access inWestern Queens, especially seniors,” saidCouncil Member Van Bramer. “By bringingfresh fruits and vegetables directly into acommunity that needs, and wants them, ourinitiative is able to address a real need herein Queensbridge.” Some research has shownthat large populations of residents who live inpublic housing developments throughout NewYork City suffer from obesity and diabetes. One factor that contributes to this problem isthe lack of access to affordable, healthy, foodoptions. Produce is often available at areastores but at a higher price which manycannot afford on a regular basis. Many ofthese individuals cannot pay because theirhousehold budgets are stretched thin.

The program works similar to that of a

Community-Supported Agriculture program(CSA) in which individuals pledged to sup-port one or more local farms with a one-timepayment which can be several hundred dol-lars for an entire agricultural grow season.

As opposed to a CSA, the bags of pro-duce GrowNYC will be providing partici-pants are at a fraction of the cost and areavailable at a one-time fee of $10 for eachweek they choose to participate in the pro-gram. Those who choose to participate alsohave the options of paying via electronicbenefit transfers (EBT) and Food Stamps.

The produce bags will contain fruits andvegetables that are currently seasonal onregional farms, with contents changing fromweek to week. In addition to the fresh pro-duce, bags will also come with recipes, andnutritional materials to help participants pre-pare food at home. Currently, Council Mem-ber Van Bramer’s office and GrowNYC aredeveloping nutritional workshops to furthereducate the public about cooking with pro-duce they typical might not already have intheir kitchens.

Currently the program works with anorganic farm in Pennsylvania called GreenPasture Farms who is delivering pre-packedboxes of a few different varieties of producethat they grow on their farm. Other items arebeing added to give value to the box, such ascorn and fruit that GrowNYC purchase fromother regional farmers.

Renovations For Dangerous Roadwayby Rob MacKay

As part of an effort to dissuade motorists from driving into ongoing traffic, the NYC Department of Transportation has agreed to renovate the 39th Street-51st Avenue area.Elected officials and local residents have complained that motorists often cruise against legally proceeding autos on one-way 39th Street to avoid traffic on the Long IslandExpressway. In that vicinity, 51st Avenue is basically a service road to the LIE.

stood united to express their desire to do something and showconsistency in their efforts. This work is in line with the efforts ofothers in their own way to take charge in showing a potential pathto improving the lives of our neighbors, not through sweet words orfancy and expensive schemes, but through hands-on undertakings.Special thanks to Than Htut Phoo and his team from the AsianAmericans for Equality for their work on September 2.

While there are many who must be acknowledged for theircommitment to stand together with these servants of the people, special notes of gratitude are being made here to Gleason’s PaintStore (hat tip to our man Ron and the crew), Sean Ogs (thank youJimmy and Paul for your funding of Phase I and II), the family ofNelson and Elba Rodriguez (great friends, great doers), Joseph andTheresa McGowan (the two most unsung heroes of Woodside),Thomas Ryan (the man who put so many of the ideas that wereimplemented in the mind of David Rosasco in the first place) and ofcourse, the good and strong-willed people of Woodside who gavethe unwavering caring and support underpinning this truly massiveenterprise, one that has verifiably transformed Woodside and broughtmore than a few smiles back onto the faces of our people.

The photos of Phase 3 and 4 speak for themselves about what hasbeen done and who is doing the things that are done, not will be doneor should be done. The key statement of purpose as expressed by theChairman of the WNA to the many hundreds, if not thousands, ofwell-wishers since Year II of the 5-Year Plan for the revitalizationof Woodside commenced on May 16, 2012 was simple: “REMEM-BER. Remember what you saw, and ponder what it was you saw orthink you saw and draw your own conclusions”.

The servants of the community stated time and again to thosewho thought they could not do something “Brothers and sisters, youwill never be forgotten, ignored or abandoned. Your smile and kindwords alone sustain and nourish us.”

Scales, Melodies And Other Harmonious SoundsAre Set To Resonate In Sunnyside!

by Rob MacKay

Local pianist, composer andeducator Evan Mazunik will launchthe Sunnyside Piano Academy, anew group piano program, on Sept.10. Sessions will include structuredpractice, individual instruction, improvisation games andsongwriting tips.

Mazunik, who has more than25 years of musical experience, has taught private students inQueens, Manhattan and Brooklynsince 2007. Now he’s excited touse his unique, improvisation-based approach at the academy, which is based at Sunnyside Re-formed Church, 48-03 SkillmanAve.

“I founded Sunnyside PianoAcademy with the aim to demol-

ish boredom in musical educa-tion,” he said. “I passionately be-lieve that every individual can dis-cover music that speaks to themand inspires them.”

Mazunik, who has taught mas-ter classes at the Royal Academy ofMusic in London, the University ofNorth Texas and the New Schoolfor Jazz and Contemporary Music,is very aware of the all-too-com-mon story of parents forcing theirchildren to practice the piano, whichoften turns a pleasant pastime intodrudgery. That’s why he is alwayslooking for new ways to make pi-ano practice fun.

“I had one student on the vergeof quitting lessons, until we discov-ered that he was obsessed with videogame theme songs. After we startedexploring that repertoire, his enthu-

siasm for playing piano skyrock-eted,” Mazunik said. “As soon asmy students reconnect with thespark of their own creativity, I aminstantly elated and reminded whyI love to teach.”

Classes will take place on week-day afternoons. Enrollment is opento students ages pre-K through highschool (adult students will meet onFridays only). The 12-week fallsemester kicks of the week of Sept.10 and goes through Dec. 20.

For more information and toregister for a free consultation, call347-254-7780 or visitwww.sunnypiano.com. To learnmore about Mazunik, who has abachelor’s degree in piano perfor-mance and a master’s degree in jazzstudies from the University of Iowa, visit www.evanmazunik.com.
