TIDBITS® PRESENTS SOME INTERESTING
by Kathy Wolfe
Baby, it’s cold outside! As we head into the season of ice, snow and frigid temperatures, Tidbits presents a few informative facts about winter that you should find interesting. And if you’re fortunate enough to be in a warm and sunny climate where cold and wintry weather can be avoided, let this be a good reminder of what you’re missing! • For those of us in the northern hemisphere, the
first day of winter is the day the sun is farthest south, on either December 21 or 22. Also known as the Winter Solstice, it’s the shortest day of the year, with only about 9.5 hours of daylight.
• A snowflake starts out as an ice crystal that freezes around a tiny speck of dust in the air. It can be just one ice crystal, or as it falls, several crystals can join together. There are always six sides to a snowflake, and although they may be similar in appearance, no two are exactly the same. This can be quite mind-boggling when you consider the billions and trillions of snowflakes that exist!
• The shape and form of a snowflake are dependent on the temperature, water vapor in the air, moisture content of the cloud, the wind, and the length of time it takes to reach the ground. Extremely cold weather produces very fine, powdery snowflakes, while temperatures near the freezing point cause

Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula is home to the ancient ruins of the most famous Mayan city, Chichen Itza. Follow along to learn some enlightening facts about this site, named as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. • One of the largest Mayan cities, Chichen Itza
covered an area of at least 1.9 square miles. It was an active urban center of the Mayan empire from 750 to 1200 A.D.
• The ancient Mayan civilization displayed brilliant mathematical and astronomical skills. They were keen observers of the sun, moon, planets, and stars, even predicting solar eclipses from their state-of-the-art observatory, El Caracol, which still stands at the site today.
• The most familiar structure at Chichen Itza is the Kukulkan Pyramid, shown above, also known as El Castillo. This 98-foot tall ceremonial temple is a specimen of this civilization’s development of the 365-day calendar. It has 365 steps rising to the top, with each of its four sides containing 91 steps and the top platform making the 365th.
• Enormous sculptures of serpent heads are at the base of the pyramid on the northern staircase, which is the principal sacred path to the top. The temple is geographically positioned so that twice a year, on the spring and autumn equinoxes, at sunset, a shadow falls on the pyramid that makes it appear that the serpent Kukulkan is slinking its way down the stairway. Seven interlocking triangles form a serrated line that resembles the serpent’s tail.
• Near the pyramid is the ballcourt, a large area 554 feet (168 meters) long and 231 feet (70 meters) wide. It was here that Mayan men played pok

length of time it took to freeze water using the variables of temperature and wind speeds. This was then compared with the rate that the body loses heat. If the temperature is 0° F and the wind is blowing 30 mph, it will feel like the temperature is -26°. Skin exposed to 0° F and only 15 mph will experience a wind chill of -19° F can freeze in as little as 30 minutes.
• Hypothermia is a very real danger in many parts of the country this time of year. It can even effect people in sunny southern states where the days are warm but the nights turn cool. People, especially the elderly, who don’t dress appropriately by changing into warmer evening or bedtime clothing can suffer unhealthy losses in body heat.
• Hypothermia occurs when the body’s temperature drops below 95°F. As the temperature decreases, the body automatically directs blood away from the skin, increasing flow to warm the vital organs. Since the heart and brain are the most sensitive to cold, a slowdown occurs in the electrical activity of these organs. Thinking and reasoning are impaired, and as delirium sets in the person has the desire to fall asleep. When the body’s temperature reduces to about 82°F, the heart rate slows down substantially, and if the temperature drops to 68°F brain function stops. About half of all hypothermia deaths are people over 60 years of age, with 75% of these occurring in men.
• It’s been a long time since the record for a single day’s snowfall was set in the United States. Back in December of 1913, Georgetown, Colorado received 63 inches in one day. Canada’s record is much newer – 57 inches fell in Tahtsa Lake West, British Columbia in 1999. January of 1911 was a record-setting month in Tamarack, California – 390 inches of snow in a single month! Valdez, Alaska is the snowiest place in the U.S., averaging 326 inches a year.
• Canadians are the champions at making snow angels! In 2004, students, parents, and teachers from 60 schools in the London, Ontario district hit the ground to create 15,851 snow angels simultaneously. In 2011, 22,022 folks in 130 separate locations in Nova Scotia produced the most angels in multiple locations.
• Chamonix, France hosted the first Winter Olympics for 11 days in early 1924. Sixteen nations sent a total of 258 athletes to “The International Winter Sports Week” to participate in 16 different events. Finland and Norway took the majority of the 43 medals, Norway with 17
and Finland, 11. The United States took home four medals, and Canada received one, the gold for hockey, the first of a streak. Out of the first seven Olympic winter games, Canada took the gold medal in hockey six times.
• Squaw Valley, California was the site of the 1960 Winter Olympics, and both the skiers and event organizers were more than a little nervous as the opening day approached. The reason? There was no snow! In a desperate effort to save this major Olympic event, a local Native American tribe, the Piute, was

much larger and more complex ones. The average snowflake falls at the rate of about 3.1 mph and it can take several hours for one to reach the ground.
• The Guinness World Book of Records cites the world’s largest snowflake ever recorded as one that fell in Fort Keogh, Montana in January of 1887. This giant was 15 inches wide and 8 inches thick!
• Although you might think every big snowstorm looks like a blizzard, the National Weather Service lists specific characteristics that must occur before it can officially be given that name. The storm must contain “winds reaching sustained speeds or frequent gusts of 35 mph or greater, with visibilities repeatedly reduced to 1/4 mile or less by falling and/or blowing snow for a period of at least three hours.”
• Seasonal Affective Disorder, or S.A.D., is commonly called the “winter blues” and is a type of depression tied to the changes in the amount of sunlight we have. It was officially described and named in 1984 by the National Institute of Mental Health. Geographical locations that are dark or cloudy during the winter have a higher prevalence. For example, Southern California residents experience barely a one percent occurance, whereas the incidence in New Hampshire is almost ten percent.
• Folks who are actually afraid of snow are called chionophobics, and their greatest fear is of being snowbound or stranded. Even the forecast of a winter storm can bring on cold sweats, racing heartbeat, and panic attacks.
• The wind chill factor is the temperature felt on exposed skin due to wind. The wind chill index was developed by two Antarctic explorers in the 1940s, who experimented with the

The first patent for a snowmobile was issued in 1927 to a Wisconsin inventornamed Carl Eliason, who calledhis invention a “snow machine.” Thirteen more patents were granted over the next 35 years. Joseph Bombardier was the designer of the modern snowmobile, and the first to successfully market them with the Ski-Doo in 1959.

CHICHEN ITZA (from page 2)
• By now, nearly everyone has heard about the Mayan doomsday prophecy predicting the demise of civilization to occur in December of 2012. The prediction is that the great warrior serpent Kukulkan will rise from the ground under the ballcourt and will bring with it the end the world on the 22nd of the month.
• El Castillo was not the first temple to occupy the site. Built sometime between 1000 and 1200 A.D., it was constructed on the foundation of previous temples. Archaeological digs in the 1930s uncovered another staircase under the north side of the pyramid, and continuing the dig, found another temple buried below.
• It is evident that human sacrifices were a great part of the culture. Chichen Itza, which translates “the mouth of the well at Itza,” was settled around two large open wells, which supplied the population with their only source of water. One well was considered a sacred place, and the other for everyday use. Large amounts of human bones, jewelry and ceremonial objects have been recovered during excavation at the bottom of the sacred well.
• Very large gatherings were held at the Temple of the Warriors, an enormous complex with a large stepped pyramid, four platforms, and 200 carved columns. Thousands of artifacts have been recovered from the area, including gold, carved jade, pottery, obsidian, rubber, flint, and more human skeletons.
• There are many theories about why the Mayan civilization came to such an abrupt end. It is believed that at some period during the 1200s its entire population suddenly abandoned Chichen Itza to the jungle. Though they left behind amazing works of architecture, art and evidence of mathematical and scientific knowledge, the city’s inhabitants left no known record of why they abandoned their homes. While scientists and researchers speculate that droughts, exhausted soils, and quests for conquest and treasure may have contributed to Chichen Itza’s downfall, the facts are unclear and remain a mystery to this day.
• About 1.2 million tourists visit Chichen Itza every year. Visitors were once allowed to walk through the buildings, explore the ruins and climb to the top of the pyramids. However, after a woman fell to her death from El Castillo in 2006, visitors are no longer permitted on the structures. ■
Excavations next to El Castillo began in 2009

● It was revered civil-rights leader Mohandas Gandhi who made the fol-lowing sage observation: “Freedom is not worth having if it does not con-note freedom to err.”
● If you’re afraid of rats and mice, you might not want to read the fol-lowing little tidbit: Those who study such things say that 60 percent of all the mammals on earth are rodents.
● Athletes playing baseball on steroids have frequently been in the news in recent years, but drugs are nothing new in America’s national sport. During the late 1960s and throughout almost all of the ‘70s, Dock Ellis was a valued pitcher who played for several teams, including the Pittsburgh Pirates. On June 12, 1970, Ellis took LSD, under the mis-taken belief that it was an off day for his team. By the time he realized that the Pirates were scheduled to play against the San Diego Padres that evening, it was too late. The drug proved to have no ill effect on Ellis; in fact, he pitched a no-hitter. When he recounted the event to a reporter 12 years later, he said he remembered only bits and pieces of the game, though he felt euphoric. Many years later, after being treated for chronic addiction, Ellis became a coordinator for an anti-drug program in Califor-nia.
● It’s been reported that Albert Einstein did not like to wear socks.
● George W. Church, the founder of Church’s Fried Chicken, didn’t ac-tually enter the restaurant business until after he retired. In his first ca-reer, Church ran a chicken hatchery and sold incubators.
● Historians say that Russia’s Pe-ter the Great was nearly 7 feet tall. *** Thought for the Day: “Sometimes I wonder if men and women really suit each other. Per-haps they should live next door and just visit now and then.” -- Katharine Hepburn

Many people assume that Christmas cards have always been a part of our culture, but such is not the case. The first Christmas cards were actually greetings that were designed to raise awareness of people in need. • In 1843, Sir Henry Cole, in England, wanted
to help those living in desolate conditions. Sir Henry was a writer of children’s books, handbooks for art and design and many more ventures. He was involved in public service for more than 50 years, including assisting with the postal service.
• Being a man with many personal and business friends and acquaintances, and considering that people would hand write their Christmas greetings, Sir Henry felt that he didn’t have the time required to compose his own individually. In 1843, he commissioned artist John Calcott Horsley to design a card he could send that would depict the poor living conditions under which many lived. His idea was to raise awareness and encourage help for the poor, and at the same time offer his Christmas greetings.
• Unexpectedly, the card that Horsley made for Sir Henry Cole caused quite a stir of criticism. The happy family gathered around toasting Christmas cheer on the front of the card included a child sipping wine! As in today’s society, this was not acceptable behavior and critics were aghast. But ironically, and despite the inappropriateness and the outcry, the card drew so much attention that it quickly became a hit.
• Neither Cole nor Horsley had any idea of the impact their Christmas cards would have on Britain. The popularity of the Christmas card later began to grow in America and eventually spread the world over. By 1880 the design and development of Christmas greeting cards would become big business and open up new opportunities for writers, artists, printers and engravers.
• The first Christmas cards were not religious in nature. They usually were quite plain with depictions of animals, quaint winter scenes, girls, dolls and more. A few had drawings depicting angels.
• The first appearance of Christmas cards in the United States was in 1874. Bavarian-born lithographer, Louis Prang, is often referred to as the “Father of the American Christmas card.”
• Prang ran a successful printing company in Boston during the late nineteenth century, producing high quality reproductions of famous art work and greeting cards, using a technique called chromolithography. Prior to his production of cards, Christmas cards were rarely exchanged in America. His were also among the first to depict religious scenes.
• U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower issued the first official Christmas card from the White House in 1953. Now, a common practice, the official White House cards are usually designed
by prominent American artists and depict White House scenes. In 1961 there were just 2000 recipients of the official cards; by 2005 there were over 1.4 million!
• One of the largest greeting card companies in the world, Hallmark, has done remarkably well with Christmas cards, wrapping paper, ornaments and more. All kinds of cards are made by the company started by two brothers in 1910 in Norfolk, Nebraska. They moved to Kansas City, Missouri shortly after to be near a larger, more lucrative market of customers. The slogan, “when you care enough to give the very best,” was adopted in 1944.
• The international headquarters for Hallmark is located at Crown Center in Kansas City. The Mayor’s Christmas Tree, one of the tallest in the nation, is erected at Crown Center Square every year. The Hallmark Visitor Center is fun any time of year, with free admission. There are many great exhibits, including one allowing
visitors to press a button to create a bow that they can keep as a souvenir.
• Another free Christmas idea originated a few years ago in Germany. In 2004, the German post office gave away 20 million scented stickers to place on Christmas cards with fragrances like fir trees, cinnamon, gingerbread, and more. It was a “scent-sational” idea for the holidays! ■

Special Meatloaf A meatloaf baking in the oven is one of those very special foods that evoke feelings of “home” and “safe” and “good” -- all synonymous with “love.” Stir up this meatloaf to serve your fam-ily, and maybe they will show their love for you by helping with the dishes!
1 cup fresh shredded spinach leaves, stems removed and discarded 1 cup shredded carrots 6 tablespoons dried fine bread crumbs 1/4 cup grated reduced-fat Parmesan cheese 1 egg beaten, or equivalent in egg substi-tute 1 (10 3/4-ounce) can reduced-fat tomato soup 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce 1/8 teaspoon black pepper 1 pound extra-lean ground turkey or beef
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Spray a 9-by-5-inch loaf pan with butter-flavored cooking spray. 2. In a large bowl, combine spinach, car-rots, bread crumbs, Parmesan cheese, egg, 1/4 cup tomato soup, Worcestershire sauce and black pepper. Add meat. Mix well to combine. Pat mixture into prepared loaf pan. Spoon remaining tomato soup over top. 3. Bake for 55 to 60 minutes. Place loaf pan on a wire rack and let set for 5 minutes. Divide into 6 servings. Freezes well.

Q: I am a big fan of “Sons of Anarchy,” and I was wondering who the pretty blonde is? She was on a couple of episodes and played Karen. I know I’ve seen her on something else prior to this. -- Geri R., via e-mail
A: Tara Sum-mers, who turns 33 in De-cember, plays Dr. Karen Dunhill on FX’s rough-and-tumble, motorcycle-filled crime drama. Tara is a TV and film vet who’s been in lots of series and feature film, including “Alfie,” “Boston Legal,” “Dirt,” “Factory Girl,” “Damages” and “Ring-er.” You can see her this winter in the feature film “Hitchcock,” which stars Anthony Hopkins (as Alfred Hitchcock) and Helen Mirren (as his wife, Alma Reville), with Tara playing Rita Riggs. Tara told me what it was like working with the two legendary actors: “Helen Mirren ... it’s really like her movie. She’s extraordinary. It focuses on the love story between Hitchcock and his wife, and how she was the silent partner in the operation. His wife had a lot more to do with it than we will ever know.
And Anthony Hopkins is one of my heroes, and he was so generous and so kind. He’s always in a good mood, and just so amazing to work with and to watch.” ***
Q: My friend told me that the CW is remaking “Sex and the City.” Is that true? If so, why? It was great as it was on HBO. -- Penny W., Seattle
A: The CW is not remaking the hit HBO series, which starred Sarah Jessica Parker and Kim Cattrall. Rather, they bought the rights to the prequel, “The Carrie Diaries,” based on the book written by “Sex” author Candace Bushnell. “The Carrie Diaries” -- set in the 1980s -- chronicles Carrie Bradshaw’s (played by AnnaSophia Robb) coming-of-age as she navigates her senior year of high school and discov-ers the glittering lights of Manhattan, and lots of shoes. “The Carrie Diaries” premieres on the CW on Monday, Jan. 14, at 8/7c, followed by “90210,” which moves to 9/8c. ***
Q: I was a big fan of “The Cosby Show,” and I wondered whatever happened to the actor who played Rudy’s friend, Stanley, on the show. -- Justin W., via e-mail
A: Merlin Santana, who went on to play Ohagi on “Moesha” and Romeo on “The Steve Har-vey Show,” died on 2002 at the age of 26. Tragically, he was falsely accused of attempted rape of 15-year-old Monique King, so her boyfriend, Brandon Bynes, shot Merlin six times, killing him. Brandon received three consecutive life sentences plus 70 years in pris-on, while Monique received eight years in juvenile custody.

If you need an attorney as a result of a serious personal injury, there are certain things you should consider.
We feel it is inappropriate for a lawyer or representative to contact you as a result of an accident. In fact, unsolicited personal contact is prohibited by the State Bar. The decision to contact an attorney is yours and yours alone.
This means that you pay no attorney’s fees unless your lawyer either negotiates a settlement with your approval or wins a judgement in court. This method of compensation makes legal representation available to many who otherwise could not afford it. It also means that if your case has merit, you can be well represented by a qualifi ed attorney.
Ask friends or attorneys you know for references of personal injury lawyers, or check with the California Bar Association. It’s the best way to fi nd an ethical, competent attorney with the trial experience it takes to bring your case to a fair conclusion. Husband’s Family Over-spends at Christmas DEAR MARY: My husband’s family spends lavishly every Christmas, and it always makes me feel pressured to reciprocate. For example, last Christmas, they bought my 4-year-old daughter a $300 DVD player. And they gave me a $150 gift certificate to my favorite salon. While their generosity is greatly appreciated, my husband and I can’t afford to break the bank Christmas shopping. Plus, I’m worried they’re sending my daugh-ter the wrong message about the meaning of Christmas. How do I make it a nice Christmas for everyone without looking like a cheapskate? -- Shannon, Indiana
Dear Shannon: Could it be you’re putting pressure on yourself to be the Family Christmas Magician? You have my permission to turn in your resignation. You can’t control what other people do. What your daughter learns about the real meaning of Christmas she’ll learn from you and your hus-band, and not just from what you say. She learns from your attitudes and actions, too. Teach her that the gifts we give express what’s in our hearts. We shouldn’t give to get approval or to get something equal in return. How about letting her help you make gifts this year? Here’s an idea: Create a family calendar that highlights all of the important family dates and events for the coming year. Once completed, make a color photocopy for each member of the family. Should she (and you!) receive gifts from others, accept them as the expressions of the giv-ers’ hearts. And don’t miss any opportunity to teach her how to be gracious and genuinely grateful. And hey, enjoy that spa day! * * * DEAR MARY: Recently, my sister and
I spent a day shopping at outlets. I was pretty pleased with some good deals I scored, espe-cially one sweater I found for 50 percent off. But then a couple days later I went to my local mall and saw the same sweater on sale for even less! Needless to say, I was pretty annoyed. Is there any way to guarantee I’m getting the best bargain when shopping at an outlet? -- Sandy, email
Dear Sandy: Outlet shopping can produce some great bargains, but you have to be particu-larly careful. You can find first-quality overruns, seconds, samples, prototypes, discontinued items and even merchandise made to sell in outlets only. Outlets are where retailers send their manufactur-ing goofs. They might look great on the rack, but perhaps the fabric was cut off-grain or they are not true to size. Don’t assume everything is a bargain. Curiously, some retailers have more outlet stores than regular stores. Because there are no guarantees with outlet shopping, make sure you know the store’s return and refund policies before you buy. As with anything, a little research before you head out on your outlet mall adventure will help. Check out OutletBound.com or FactoryOut-letStores.com to find out what stores are located in the outlet malls near you. This will make it easier to contact the stores directly for information.

Vet-Friendly Schools G.I. Jobs magazine has released its annual survey and has rated 1,739 schools as being veteran-friendly. The Military Friendly Schools list ranks the top 15 percent of more than 11,000 schools in the country, including universities, colleges and trade schools. It looked at value, flexibility, academic ac-creditation, percentage of students who are veterans, graduation rates, military-spouse policies, tuition dis-counts and support services for veterans. To view the list, go online to the database at www.militaryfriendlyschools.com. The matchmaker program is very well done. Pick a degree program, and a list of possibilities opens on the right. Break it down by location and you have a choice between virtual only (online) or campus schools. For a campus location, you can se-lect either a region of the country or an individual state. Click on Flexibility, and use the slide bars to indicate how important it is to have weekend classes, evening classes or online classes. Use the slide bar to indicate sources of funding. When it comes to Areas of Study, here is where the astonishing breadth of the offerings comes into play. Click on your chosen field, and the program immediately sorts all your school options. Once all your choices are made, look for the red thumbs-up icon, which indicates schools in the top 15 percent category. Click on each school name for particulars and the ratings in the criteria. Be sure to look at Academics, Review and Profile. If you want to alter your choices, flip back through the categories and make changes to the in-formation. The program responds instantly, showing you the options. If you want to save your information, register on the site. I’m not usually a fan of online databases, but this one is outstanding. If school is in your future, use this program to sort through your options.

Sir Barks-a-Lot Barking is as natural as breathing. Triggered by a state of excitement, barking is a dog’s means of communicating anger, loneliness, fear, playfulness or a need for something. Excessive barking is barking’s obnoxious and intolerable cousin. It’s an exaggeration of natu-ral canine behavior that can only be eliminated by either giving in to the dog’s demand or recondition-ing the dog. I’d advise doing the latter -- yesterday. The excessive barking of an overindulged or neglected dog has ruined friendships, destroyed relationships and added to the overwhelm of courts already jammed with frivolous concerns that are largely solvable without the aid of lawyers and judg-es. Time and money are wasted. Friends and cred-ibility are lost. Furthermore, if you’re a renter, you may come home to find yourself staring at a notice to vacate. So don’t ignore your neighbor’s complaints about your dog’s barking. Instead, first find out whether you have a dog problem or a neighbor prob-lem. Do a little sleuthing. Leave the dog with a friend or relative, or board him at a local kennel for a few days. During that time, ask your neighbor whether the barking has been a problem. If he complains even when the dog isn’t there, you have a neighbor problem. But if the dog turns out to be the culprit, there are adjustments that can and should be made to your approach, to the dog’s environment and/or to the dog’s temperament. Possible reasons behind excessive barking are vast but rarely mysterious: tethering, improper confinement (e.g., in a room behind a closed door), outside distractions (e.g., construction, stray ani-mals, lawnmowers, a steady stream of strangers), bad weather, separation anxiety, heightened terri-torialism, lack of exercise, genetics, temperament, hunger... There’s a great cartoon that features an im-patient pup sitting next to an empty food bowl at the feet of his master, an artist consumed with the mas-terpiece-in-the-making on the easel before him. The caption: “And how about some dinner, huh? One of the great masters, indeed.” The cartoon makes it clear that some prob-lems come with simple solutions: --Keep the dog in a fenced backyard or dog run, rather than tethered to a tree out front. --Ensure he gets sufficient exercise -- two or three vigorous walks every day, with some spirited

The amount of exercise depends on the breed of dog. --When inside, keep him confined to an area of the house with a baby gate so he can see his world, rather than shutting him off from the world in a room behind closed doors. --While you’re gone, close window blinds and drapes, and play soothing music or low-level talk-ra-dio to ease the pain of separation and dull unpleasant exterior distractions. --Give him a Nylabone toy to while away the hours until you return. Boredom can contribute to mindless barking. --Don’t make a big fuss out of every good-bye. This only heightens his anxiety when you leave, which can result in a long tedious barking session on the heels of every departure. --Keep him well fed and thirst quenched. A satisfied dog is a quiet dog. Barking problems that are more a matter of DNA than environment are less likely but more complex, and require a reconditioning of the dog as opposed to a mere adjustment to the dog’s environ-ment. This demands patience and persistence on the part of the dog owner. Considering the problems brought on by excessive barking left unchecked, the effort is worthwhile. Racial, Economic Gaps in Care Need Correcting Black women are dying from breast cancer at a much higher rate than any other racial group. For women over the age of 45, the incidence of breast cancer is more frequently diagnosed in whites. But the percentage of black women surviving breast cancer after five years is 78 percent compared with 90 percent for whites. There are those who believe that black women tend to have a more aggressive form of breast can-cer and are more likely to be diagnosed at a later stage when the chance of cure is smaller. Stud-ies have shown that genetic differences between blacks and whites may lead to a higher risk of more aggressive tumors in blacks. However, this notion was questioned at a recent presentation titled “The Science of Can-cer Health-Care Disparities” at the fifth annual American Association of Cancer Research Con-ference. In this report, the researchers compared breast cancer outcomes in black, white, Hispanic and Asian women, and noted the highest mortal-ity among blacks. However, survival was identical when comparing blacks and whites with similar socioeconomic, reproductive and lifestyle charac-teristics who were also treated identically. This information provides more solid support for the well-recognized fact that financial status, lack of access to health care, lack of insurance and perhaps continued discrimination are key factors contributing to a poorer prognosis in black women. Disparities in outcomes for blacks are not lim-ited to breast cancer. According to the Agency for Health Care Research and Policy, part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the overall survival of black men and women is signifi-cantly lower than whites. According to the agency report: For blacks, virtually every illness is diagnosed at a later stage and prognosis is worse. For heart disease, blacks are 13 percent less likely to undergo coronary angioplasty and 30 per-cent less likely to have bypass surgery than whites. In children diagnosed with severe asthma, 7 percent of blacks are admitted to the hospital com-pared with 21 percent of white children. Blacks with HIV are less likely to receive ad-equate retroviral therapy or preventive therapy to prevent serious infections. In nursing homes, blacks are less likely to have access to glasses and hearing aids, and measures of quality of care are less than for whites. Leaders within the black community are seri-ously concerned that there is a widespread dis-trust of the health care system among blacks. In an interview in The Washington Post, Dr. Regina Hampton of the Capital Breast Care Center says, “there is a historically unhealthy relationship be-tween African Americans and a medical system that is inaccessible.” Clearly addressing health care disparities must be a central goal of health-care reform. This must include more training on the impact of race, so-cioeconomic status and education on the risk of illness, and resources must be targeted directly at communities at high risk of contracting and dying from a serious illness. More health care providers must be willing, and rewarded, to practice in rural and disadvantaged neighborhoods, and there must be a continued commitment to increase the minority healthcare provider work force. We must also take advantage of the strengths and unique characteristics of ethnic communities. Any approach to increase awareness of screening and illness prevention must be pursued. A good
example is the “Witness Program” developed by the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences at Little Rock Here, breast cancer survivors return to their communities and witness to other women in their churches about the importance of mammograms and self breast examinations. This has been made easier by mobile mammogram units that travel the state screening as many women as possible. Hopefully the provision of insurance to those who cannot afford it through the Affordable Care Act will provide better access to care and earlier di-agnosis. Most important are stronger public health programs that reach out to the poor and nonwhites through education. There must be a continued and ongoing commitment to rid our nation of scandal-ous health-care disparities based on race and economic status. As we move toward refining and improving the healthcare system, nothing is more important than reaching out to those who have inadequate access to care and poor outcomes from many illnesses, including cancer. TIDBITS® PRESENTS SOME INTERESTING
WINTRY FACTSby Kathy Wolfe
Baby, it’s cold outside! As we head into the sea-son of cold temperatures, Tidbits presents some interesting and informative facts about winter.
• For those of us in the northern hemisphere, the first day of winter is the day the sun isfarthest south, on either December 21 or 22. Also known as the Winter Solstice, it’s the shortest day of the year, with about 9.5 hours of daylight.
•A snowflake starts out as an ice crystal thatfreezes around a tiny piece of dust in the air. It can be just one ice crystal, or as it falls, several crystals can join together. There are always six sides, andalthoughtwosnowflakesmaybeverysimilar, none are exactly the same. The shape and form are dependent on the temperature, water vapor in the air, moisture content of the cloud, the wind, and the length of time it takes to reach the ground. Extremely cold weather producesveryfine, powderysnowflakes, whiletemperatures near the freezing point cause much larger and more complex ones. The averagesnowflakefallsattherateofabout3.1mph (5 km/hr) and it can take several hours for one to make it to the ground.

No Advantage to Waiting Beyond Age 70 Q: I am close friends with an older woman whom I believe is making a big mistake regarding Social Security. She turned 70 about six months ago. She’s still working and says she plans to keep working as long as possible. But she has yet to sign up for her Social Securi-ty benefits. She says she will keep getting more money the longer she delays applying for her benefits. Also, she believes that there is some limit to the amount of money she can draw off of her account. She thinks that once she gets out all the money she has put into the system, her checks will stop. I’m only in my 40s and don’t know all that much about Social Security. Is any of this true?
A: None of it is true. You should encour-age your friend to apply for Social Security benefits immediately. Each month she waits, she is essential-ly throwing away a full Social Security check. While it is true that someone who puts off signing up for Social Security until age 70 gets a sub-stantial delayed retirement bonus, there is absolute-ly no advantage to waiting beyond age 70. In other words, there are no more bonuses added to Social Security payments after that age. Well, let me clarify. There is a chance that her extra earnings (and corresponding Social Se-curity tax payments) beyond age 70 will increase the amount of her monthly Social Security check. Whether she is due the increase depends on how much money she is making and how it compares to her past earnings that were used to figure the amount of her Social Security check. But, the point is, she gets that annual adjustment to her Social Se-curity checks while she is getting benefits. This is a completely separate procedure from the delayed retirement bonus described above. Finally, your friend is dead wrong about only getting benefits until she draws out all the money she put into the system. Social Security doesn’t work that way. She will get a monthly Social Security check for the rest of her life. * * *
Q: I started my Social Security at age 68. So I have two years worth of delayed retire-ment bonuses added to my Social Security pay-ments. I just turned 69 and I am still working -- and plan to do so as long as I can. I read in one of your past columns that my Social Secu-rity checks should be adjusted upwards each year because of my additional earnings. But a Social Security representative told me that be-cause I got those delayed retirement credits, I cannot get any increases because of my addi-tional earnings. Is this true?
A: It’s absolutely false. As I alluded to in the answer to the previous question, anyone who works after they start getting Social Security checks is potentially due an increase in their monthly ben-efit rate. Without getting into too much detail, I can tell you that you would be due an increase IF your current annual income is higher than the lowest (inflation ad-justed) year of earnings used in your original Social Security computation. If that is the case, the Social Security Administration will drop out that low year, add in the new higher year, and refigure your Social Security benefit. This process is automatic and usually happens by about September of the year following the year in question. In other words, around September 2013, you should see an increase for your 2012 earnings. And that increase would be retroactive to January 2013. The amount of the increase depends entirely on your past earnings history and your current earn-ings. But most people will see about a $20 bump in their monthly Social Security checks. If you don’t get an increase but think you should have been due one, you should take your W-2 form or tax return to your local Social Security office and ask them to check into this. * * *
Q: I want you to know that something you wrote several months ago encouraging people not to gamble with their Social Security has turned out to be sadly true in our case. My husband waited until age 70 to start his Social Security checks. Because both his parents lived until their mid-90s, he was convinced he would live at least as long. But he had a massive heart attack about three months ago and died at age 71. I don’t really have a question. I just want you and other readers to know that sometimes the best laid plans don’t work out.
A: I am so sorry for your loss. And thank you so much for sharing your story with us. As I’ve said many times before, over my 40-year career of work-ing on Social Security issues, I’ve heard from thou-sands of widows just like you. I know it’s now water under the bridge, but your husband would have been much better off taking his benefits at age 66. I hope other readers will consider this before deciding to
gamble with their Social Security. Having said that, there is one bit of good news for you. As I’m sure you’ve already learned, your wid-ow’s benefits are based on your husband’s age 70 retirement benefit, including the delayed retirement bonus he got for waiting so long to start his Social Security checks.

More and More Children Getting Kidney Stones DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My very healthy, active, 6-year-old grandson was just diagnosed as having kidney stones. His pediatrician said it is mostly genetic, but no one else in the fam-ily has had kidney stones. A friend told us she heard that stones could be caused by drinking Gatorade. My grandson has drunk a lot of Ga-torade. He does not eat processed meat, nor does he have much salt in his diet. From the Internet, I came up with the enclosed article, which linked Gatorade to kidney stones. I feel that someone needs to inform parents that too much Gatorade in children can adversely affect health. -- G.S.
ANSWER: An increase in children having kidney stones has been noticed. Some authorities have speculated that the increase in stones might be linked to children’s greater intake of salty foods like potato chips, french fries and other heavily salt-ed snacks. The sodium in salt leads to a rise in the amount of calcium lost in the urine, and, therefore, an increase in kidney-stone production. Eight ounces of Gatorade has 110 mg of sodi-um. New guidelines for daily sodium intake is 1,500 mg. To reach that limit by drinking Gatorade, one would have to drink 13 8-ounce cans or 9 12-ounce cans. Blaming the surge in the number of children on Gatorade seems iffy to me. Your grandson would be better off substitut-ing some of his consumption of Gatorade with water. He needs to cut back on his consumption of salt from other foods too. Gatorade keeps him hydrated, but he can stay hydrated with water. Dehydration is a proven cause of kidney stones. I welcome other readers’ opinions on this is-sue. The booklet on sodium, potassium and chlo-ride -- electrolytes -- explains the role of these miner-als on health. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 202W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Does it hurt you to exercise if you have a cold? I do it all the time, and I can’t see that it makes anything worse. I’ve been told not to do so. -- B.R.
ANSWER: If you’re coughing, sneezing or
have a dripping nose, others are not going to appreci-ate exercising along with you. A general rule says if your symptoms are above the neck, it’s OK to exercise. Such symptoms would be a stuffy or runny nose, a scratchy throat and an occasional sneeze. If you have an elevated temperature, achy muscles or a persistent cough, don’t exercise. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Since I was a young child, I was told not to use public rest-rooms because I could catch something. What are the chances of catching a disease from them? -- F.N.
ANSWER: Yours is a fear shared by many. If public restrooms were a source of infections, they would be closed. They’re not. As far as sexually transmitted diseases go, I have never seen any in-formation that implicates them in passing such infec-tions to others.
Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer indi-vidual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column when-ever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

Delay Claiming Social Security If you take your Social Security benefits early, you’ll be reducing by a significant margin the total amount you could receive. --The BMO Retirement Institute has pro-duced a report, “Retirees Not Maximizing Social Security Retirement Benefits,” that outlines some of the facts: --For 60 percent of seniors, Social Security will provide the majority of income they’ll have dur-ing retirement. --If you take your benefits early, you’ll re-ceive a reduced amount each month. For example, if you claim at age 62, you might receive $1,500. Wait until age 66 and that amount becomes $2,000. At age 70, it would calculate as $2,640. --If you claim early, that lesser amount stays with you for the rest of your life. (There is a 12-month period when you can pay back all the money you’ve received and start collecting again later, at a higher rate. But if you don’t act within that window of time, you can’t change your mind.) --If you’re married and die first, your spouse will receive a lesser amount each month if you’ve claimed early. While you’re living, your spouse will receive up to 50 percent of the benefit, which will be smaller because you’ve claimed early. --When it comes to asking for advice before collecting Social Security, 62 percent of seniors haven’t done that. --While it’s possible to receive Social Se-curity at age 62, the qualifying age for Medicare is still age 65. You could be stuck trying to pay for expensive health insurance with a reduced Social Security check. Before you apply for Social Security, get advice. Call and ask that the numbers be run for you showing how much you’ll receive at age 62 as opposed to later. You’ll be surprised at the differ-ence.
Matilda Charles regrets that she cannot person-ally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into her column whenever possible. Write to her in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475, or send e-mail to [email protected].

● On Dec. 4, 1872, a British ship spots the Mary Celeste, a 100-foot American brig, sailing erratically but at full sail near the Azores Islands with not a soul on board. The last entry in the captain’s log was dated 11 days earlier, showing that the Mary Celeste had been drifting since then with no one at the wheel. The fate of the crew remains a mystery to this day.
● On Dec. 6, 1884, in Washington, D.C., workers place a 9-inch aluminum pyramid atop a tower of white marble, completing construction of a monument to the city’s namesake and the nation’s first president, George Washington.
● On Dec. 5, 1933, the 21st Amendment to the U.S. Constitution is ratified, repealing the 18th Amendment and bringing an end to the era of national prohibition of alcohol in America. Utah became the 36th state to ratify the amendment, achieving the req-uisite three-fourths majority of states’ ap-proval.
● On Dec. 3, 1947, Marlon Brando’s fa-mous cry of “STELLA!” first booms across a Broadway stage, electrifying the audience at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre during the first-ever performance of Tennessee Wil-liams’ play “A Streetcar Named Desire.”
● On Dec. 9, 1950, Harry Gold -- who had confessed to serving as a courier of top-secret information on the atomic bomb -- is sentenced to 30 years in jail for his crime. Gold implicated his brother-in-law and sister, Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, who were later convicted and executed for espionage.
● On Dec. 5, 1964, the first Medal of Honor awarded for action in Vietnam is presented to Army Special Forces Capt. Roger Donlon of New York for his heroic action at Nam Dong. Donlon was shot in the stomach during an attack by hordes of Viet Cong. He stuffed a handkerchief into the wound, cinched up his belt and kept fighting.
● On Dec. 8, 1982, “Sophie’s Choice,” starring actress Meryl Streep as a Ho-locaust survivor, opens in theaters. The “choice” in the film’s title refers to a terrible decision Streep’s character is forced to make, about which of her two children will live or die while in a concentration camp.

New Worlds of Communication! Q: Six months ago, my husband and I retired. We finally sold our home, downsized our excess furniture, sold the rest off at a ga-rage sale and moved to a wonderful retirement community where we are happy. Neither of us is computer literate, and we have decided it is time we catch up with the rest of the world. Our family is encouraging us, as well. We want to learn how to email and keep in touch with them. How do we choose the best computer?
A: First, do your homework and make a list of the features you want. Both Microsoft and Apple are the most popular models and have differ-ent software capabilities. Visit both stores for dem-onstrations. Do they offer training? Libraries have computers available for usage and many offer coach-ing. Ask if the model you like best will be upgrad-ed in the near future. This may lower the current model pricing. You may also have a computer club in your new community, which you could join, make new friends and learn that the computer pros are ea-ger to teach you what they know! This year, more than half of seniors over 65 are online. Other advantageous reasons seniors are buying computers includes the willingness and challenge of accepting and learning something new, keeping their minds sharper, being able to share hobbies with new friends and learning that websites offer unlimited information and opinions about the world. This database allows you to play hundreds of games, and perhaps even gives you the ability to find a part- time job, which could help your budget! * * *
Q: Last week my husband got con-fused while attending a convention meeting and misplaced his billfold. The meeting was in a large auditorium, and he had no idea how or where to find it. He called me and did not know what to do. He checked with the conven-tion staff, but they were no help. After returning home, we immediately began canceling the credit cards and feared thieves were charging hundreds of dollars with them. Luckily, two days later, we had a call
from a stranger who said he had found the bill-fold and that several credit cards were in it, but no cash. We arranged to meet and reward him. We were relieved. How can we prepare ourselves as for another occurrence?
A: To avoid repeating your experience, consider purchasing pants with rear button protec-tion or sewing one on. Do not carry unnecessary cards, photos, receipts or other bulging material which can easily fall out, especially during holidays. Some new billfold designs that fit men’s front pock-ets offer greater protection. Always make backup copies of what you car-ry in your billfolds and purses. In an emergency, they can be lifesavers, especially when traveling. Include relatives’ names and cell phone numbers. Friends, while overseas, had thieves grab the lady’s purse and got away. They did not have backup copies, which ruined their entire trip. Remember, thieves prey on seniors because they consider them the easiest targets!

The Smasher and the Simply Smashing
Before he hit the 40-feet hook shot out of the straw to take him to within two putts of the Green Jacket, a little bit of banter in the room turned to what Bubba Watson was wearing.
As most of us know by now, Bub-ba Watson won the Masters, largely due to his monstrous 300-plus yard drives and unorthodox swinging style. But I, too, became curious about Watson’s game and, yes, his style, too.
For the techies out there, Watson uses a PING G20 driver with a cus-tom pink True Temper Grafalloy Bi-Matrix shaft. The same exact driver will be made available to pro shops this year, the company announced after the tournament.
Pink is a color that most sports fans are becoming accustomed to. It appears in splashes on various uni-forms these days to signify the fight against breast cancer, a cause that has successfully managed to co-opt that color and increase awareness. Knowing this, we were all a little leery of making fun of the color.
And we were right: Ping donates $300 to Watson’s charity for every 300-foot drive he makes. His Phoe-nix-based charity aims to donate $1 million to various organizations
during the year, and after this win, it’s a safe bet to say it will do so.
But his manner of dress and that unorthodox swinging style also reminded me of former PGA tour-nament winner from the ‘60s, Doug Sanders.
Known as the “Peacock of the Fairways,” Sanders came out of nowhere to win the Canadian Open as an amateur. His best finish at the Masters was a fourth place tie, and he won 20 events on the Tour, but Sanders was best known for his manner of dress. Sanders was famous for his “Mad Men”-esque devotion to what he wore. He was known to wear golf shoes that looked more like dress shoes, pleated golf plants, button-down cardigans and a golf polo. Each out-fit had complimentary colors of the same shade, and he even made sure his golf bags matched his outfit.
While both Sanders and Watson are philanthropists and champions, they have something else in com-mon — they’re both self-taught golfers. Neither has taken a lesson in his life. Sanders grew up a poor cotton farmer’s son; Watson’s father was a Green Beret Vietnam veteran who gave him a 9-iron once and told him to “beat it down the fairway.”
Well, Watson surely will be beat-ing it down the fairway for a while now, and nobody will make fun of his clothes anymore, but I have one suggestion — and I’m sure Mr. Sanders would agree — you should at least shave before putting on the Green Jacket. Sure he won in a play-off, but this isn’t hockey, you know.
Mark Vasto is a veteran sports-writer who lives in Kansas City.

Figural Powder Boxes Evoke Memories of Time Gone By Q: This is a photo of a porcelain powder box that was given to me as a child in the late 1960s or early 1970s. It was part of a rela-tive’s collection and still is in perfect condition. There are no manufacturer’s marks. I want to pass it along to my daughter and would like to know more about its history and value.
A: You have a figural powder box or jar that was made in the early- to mid-20th century. Just about every dresser top had one along with a mirror, comb, brush, a pin tray, covered trinket dish and per-fume bottle. Many were made in the United States, Europe and Japan. Since so many were not marked or marked with paper labels that disappeared, their origin often remains a mystery. What is important is that they are a charming reminder of the past and are collectible. Your powder jar would probably be worth $25 to $50.
Q: This mark is on the bottom of an iron-stone platter that has been in our family for as far back as I can remember. My grandmother always kept it in the dining room china cabi-net and when my mother inherited it, she kept it on a shelf where we kids couldn’t reach. It measures approximately 11 inches long and is in mint condition. It is decorated with a black and white country scene against a white back-ground. I would not part with it for anything and plan to pass it down to my daughter, but I would like to know who made it, when, where and its value.
A: Charles Meigh joined his father’s pottery at Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, England, in 1834 and operated it under his own name from 1835 to 1949. From 1850 to 1851, the name Charles Meigh and Sons and Pankurst was used. In 1851, the firm dropped the name Pankurst to become Charles Meigh and Sons. Meigh and Sons produced flow blue and mulberry transfer pattern pieces and salt glazed teapots. The pottery closed in 1901. “California” is the name of the pattern and the scene is a transfer print and not hand painted. Your mid-19th century platter would probably be worth $125 to $150.

Why I Can’t Shoot the Jump Shot I can’t shoot a jump shot because of mint chocolate-chip ice cream. This is all because my basketball-clinic coach -- an otherwise good man -- had minty breath. And not the “curiously strong” or Lifesavers “Pep-o-Mint” variety of minty breath ... his was minty in the way that broadcast a love for mint chocolate-chip ice cream. Anecdotally speaking, mint chocolate chip as an ice-cream flavor has fallen out of favor. It was pretty big in the ‘70s, though. Presented as a card-board block in your grocer’s freezer, mint chocolate-chip ice cream held the distinction of possessing a particular color of green not found in nature ... a pretty neat trick. (Also, the chips weren’t really chocolate ... they were something like carob-flavored palm oil or caramel-colored yak fat.) To the point, when I was supposed to be listening to my coach -- a saint of a guy blessed with patience unlike any other -- I couldn’t concen-trate because when he tried to instruct me, as soon as he got near my grill with the basketball, the minty aroma was just too distracting for my attention defi-cit. I was reminded of this particular shortcom-ing of mine the other night as I shared an early evening snack with Jay McMillen. McMillen was the Maryland Terrapins’ power forward in the late ‘60s, a very good player who left the school as the sec-ond all-time scorer with 1,300 points. Years later, his brother Tom would play for the Terps, and their record combined adds up to the most points by a brotherly tandem in ACC history. Tom went on to various Sports Illustrated covers, became a Rhodes Scholar and later in life he served as a congressman for a district gerry-mandered out of existence in Maryland. Today, Jay is a doctor in Missouri and he is still married to Gail, the pretty Terrapin cheerleader and former home-coming queen. Now, I promised that most of what we said was off the record, but I can’t resist giving up a few details: Jay and Gail are in the market for a new home and may become neighbors of mine. They want to cut down on space ... their kids are all grown and they’re eager to lose even more bag-gage. Gail points out the fact that they will have to get rid of some memorabilia. I scoff at that notion and share a story about a sled that was discarded by elders in my family years ago. When it snowed during a holiday, the absence of the sled led to great consternation ... if only out of nostalgia. “Don’t get rid of the basketball stuff,” I tell her. “Pass it down to your grandchildren and great-grandchildren.” She nodded in agreement, but had to laugh a bit. “You have to see the cover (of the media guide) ... those shorts ... and that jump shot! They don’t shoot like that anymore.” Yeah, well ... at least he had one. In today’s game a good jump shot is as rare as mint choco-late-chip ice cream. Either way, I’ve got neither to speak for.

Improve Impact with More Leverage
Many times golfers have made what they have felt to be a good backswing only to have it all fall apart by the time theyreturn back to the ball at impact. If you are experiencingsome inconsistencies through impact where you are contacting the ball thin on one shot and than fat on the next, than you will want to provide more leverage in your forwardswing to support the hands / clubface to make good contactwith the ball consistently. When I teach, I often see new students struggle their waythrough impact. They tell me that they feel stuck and cannotget through. The sign to this problem is in the lower body. They are swinging the club and failing to use the strength of the lower body to provide leverage in the forward swing.Notice in the picture as I go through impact, how my rightfoot has pushed off from the ground which sends a chainreaction up my leg into my knee. The knee, having supportfrom the foot can now provide support for the rotation of the right hip. A sign of a good swing is that the right hip rotatesthrough to the target. Most higher handicappers have a difficult time with the hip rotation because they do not provideenough support from the right foot and knee.Teaching with Motion Analysis Technology, as seen in the photo with the sensors on my body and image on the screenin the background, gives me the exact data to measure the body movements in the swing. This exact data gives me andthe student greater clarity and precision in making the necessary adjustments to create a faster more effective result.

Improve impact with moreleverage Many times golfers will make what they feel is a good backswing only to have it all fall apart at the point of impact. If you experience the incon- sistency of making thin, then fat ball contact, you probably need more leverage in your swing. I often see new students struggle their way through impact, saying they feel stuck and can’t get through. The key to this problem is in the lower body. They are failing to use the strength of their legs for the leverage they need in the forward swing. Notice in the photo how my right foot has pushed up giving sup-port to my knee, which now provides support for the rotation of the right hip. The sign of a good swing is that the right hip rotates through to the target. Most high handicappers have a difficult time with hip rotation because they simply don’t provide the leverage that’s needed from both the right foot and knee. Teaching with Motion Analysis Technology, as shown in the photo, uses body sensors and an animated image display to provide precise data for the instructor to analyze. By measuring exact body movements during the swing, it is easy to identify and correct improper movements quickly and with considerable accuracy.

recruited to perform a tribal “snow dance” to induce the clouds to precipitate. As the world waited and the opening day approached, the tribe proceeded with their ritual dances until a miraculous winter storm gathered and produced the snow needed to save the Olympic event!
• More than 150 people are killed every year in avalanches around the world. Many avalanches are small slides of dry powdery snow that don’t create much damage. But when massive slabs of snow, several acres in area and weighing thousands of tons, suddenly loosen from a mountainside, they slide down steep slopes reaching speeds of 80 mph in only seconds, instantly covering and flattening anything and everything in their path. Even the fastest skier can’t outrun the rushing advance of an avalanche.
• About 93% of those caught beneath a slide can survive if rescued within 15 minutes. Just 15 minutes later, the survival rate drops to 20%-30%. After an hour under the weight of the heavy snow and lack of oxygen, the survival rate is practically nil.
• Rescued victims of avalanches have compared their terrifying experience to having their entire body instantly encased in cement, while being unable to move their head, arms or legs. Attempting to dig themselves free was utterly impossible. ■
