UNDER the leadership of Oliver Cromwell, the English Parliament outlawed celebrat-ing Christmas in 1647. Cromwell, a Puritan, considered feasting and revelry on what was supposed to be a holy day to be immoral. The ban lasted until Cromwell lost power in 1660.

Along Beach Avenue were vintage hotels like the old Lafayette and the Weightman Cottages, then known as the Ocean View Hotel. The name was borrowed from the the building that now houses Cabanas and Martini Beach. – Ben Miller

Holiday Happenings In Cool Cape MayThe Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts offers a packed calender of Christmas events

IT’S beginning to look a lot like Christmas in the nation’s first seaside resort. Thanks to the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities (MAC) and Cape May’s support of

cultural and heritage tourism, our town has become a top Christmastime destination. The city is transformed into an old-fashioned winter wonderland for the holidays and celebrates the season with seven weeks of special events. Victorian homes, hotels, churches and inns are decorated for the season with twinkling lights, boughs of holly and a wreath at every door. The festivities continue all the way through January 2.

Take a trolley ride to see the city’s twinkling lights, tour the Victorian gems decked out for the season, indulge with food and wine events, and celebrate the most wonderful time of the year! There is holiday entertainment for every member of the family. Unless otherwise noted, all events listed below are sponsored by the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities. Cape May’s Designer Show House at Christmas Discover Cape May’s sixth annual Designer Show House, beautifully decorated for the holiday season by some of the region’s top designers. The historic Fairthorne Cottage will be open for self-guided tours daily from 1–4pm, plus Thursday and Friday evenings from 7–9pm. Tours can be combined with lunch and dinner packages. Each visitor will receive a full-color program book with information about the designers, products and vendors. Admission is $10 for adults and $7 for children. The show house will be closed on Christmas Day, so stay home and relax! There will be no evening hours on December 24 and 31.

MY MOTHER went to high school with the co-founder of Apple com-puters. He asked her out, and she turned him

down because he was a geek with bad acne. Then he showed up to the 20–year reunion with a private jet and the homecoming queen. “You never know who somebody might turn out to be,” my mom reminds me.

I think about this often when I’m work-ing. Maybe the guy on table four is the CEO of a Fortune 500 company. Maybe the woman on table two will discover a cure for cancer. Perhaps the man at the bar is wearing women’s underpants. You just never know.

But in the restaurant, who you are is not as important as where you’re sitting. To ensure they get the right food, patrons are referred to by seat number. “Seat one gets the tuna!” the expeditor yells. When things get really busy, though, there’s no time for seat numbers. Orders become something more like: “Fish for the fat guy!” or “Soup for the woman dressed like a hooker!”

I’m often curious about the personal lives of these patrons. I used to play a game with a fellow waiter in which we’d guess the professions of the people we served. Then we’d try coaxing the info out of our guests. Over the course of one conversa-tion, I learned I was serving the parents of a friend I’d made in Thailand three years prior. If anything will make a girl believe in six degrees of separation, it’s waitressing.

The only people I don’t care to know are the ones pretentious enough to assume I already do. Even if a guest is very impor-tant and his server knows very well who he is, it’s probably best not to feed an already inf lated ego. A friend of mine once served a

famous Philadelphia Eagle. “What’s your name?” the football play-

er asked, rubbing my friend’s backside. “Melanie,” she said. “What’s yours?” Other times, in a moment of irrational

anger over a botched order, a guest will ask his server: “Don’t you know who I am?”

“Why?” I feel like saying, “Did you for-get?”

Unfortunately, this happens quite a bit where I work. People who have to wait for a table or receive an undercooked steak want to know if I’m aware of their VIP status. In fact, it happened just yesterday. “I know who you are,” I wanted to say, “You’re the guy who f lips out over a slab of beef.”

In the past, I’ve assumed that any guest who would ask me such a thing must be an utterly obnoxious person, but perhaps this is presumptuous. After all, if waiting tables has taught me anything, it’s that I never can be sure of who I’m dealing with. And the same goes for my angry guest. Don’t you know who I am, dear sir? When dinner is over, I’m the girl who’s writing about you.

Needless to say, that house got no presents from Santa, other than a scorched lounge.

Of course, my role as Santa goes back to the very origins of the story – you might assume that, being a ludicrously rich and generous man, I decided to become a local incarnation of Mr Claus. But the truth, as always, is more intriguing: back in my day, Santa Claus was a bit of a ne’er-do-well whose real name was Sammy Hawse. Sammy liked to gamble, and after a win at Atlantic City he would return to Cape May

I MAY have to change Christmas a little this time around, I’m afraid. Every year, more of you cease to use your fine chimneys and hearths and seal them up, or fill them with

dried f lowers and other tat that makes a descent somewhat tricky for an old chap like myself. And after a few memorable attempts, I will not be trying to navigate any more central heating vents. In the last one, in one of those fancy modern homes that jostle for room on the way to the Point, I was stuck fast and feared my remains would be found in the spring when squir-rels had eaten the f lesh from my bones, and had I not had a hand grenade in the pocket of my fine ermine-lined jacket, I would have surely perished.

As it was, I rolled the grenade (I usu-ally carry one, as they can remedy all sorts of problems, from a nest of North Korean machine-gunners to a roving pack of Wildwooders, to a dispute over a park-ing space on Beach) down the vent and the explosion propelled me out of the side of the building and into the kiddy pool.

and stumble around handing out random gifts and cash. In time, his slurred intro-ductions, his trademark lucky red gambling jacket and his drunken largesse became the basis for a nice little legend of a jolly, red-faced demigod called “Santa” who slipped down chimneys (rather than his real-life habit of slipping off bar stools, senseless).

Sadly, Sammy’s gambling ended badly and he was shot through the heart by an enraged card shark after he made the mis-take of playing no fewer than three aces of hearts in the same hand.

Well then, what could I do except take up the mantle and become Santa himself? I settled on a date, the day before my birth-day, and had one of my finest carriages out-fitted specially. Then I had a snug and star-tling red outfit stitched up. Young Albert was dressed similarly, and from that came, I think, the notion of Santa’s elves, though Young Albert is mightily offended at such a comparison.

So, dear friends, this year, I will be knocking directly on the front door. Be warned: I prefer fine malt and shortbread.

Depending upon the occasion, a card is in order, at the very least a phone call, email, or even a text. To not acknowledge a gift is a crime against civility. Yes, if you have written a check and it goes uncashed for weeks at a time, of course a phone call is in order. And yes, your friends and family may be a bunch of ill-mannered, thought-less boors, but that does not give you license

to be the gift police. Give people a realistic chance to thank you, and if they don’t do so, decide whether you are giving gifts to get something in return, or giving them because you want to.

GIVING gifts and helping the poor are holiday traditions, but few people realize just how long these traditions have been around. Roman pagans

exchanged gifts as they celebrated the feast of Saturnalia at the beginning of winter. Ancient societies supported widows and orphans, and in the Middle Ages distributing alms to the needy was a recognized duty of the wealthy. By the Victorian era, when many modern Christmas traditions began, it was customary to give gifts to the poor on Boxing Day – the day after Christmas.

Historians disagree on the origins of the term “Boxing Day.” Lords traditionally distributed supplies for the new year on the day after Christmas, and often included special treats in the supply boxes. Churches also broke open the Christmas alms boxes on Boxing Day. Charles Dickens advised that in the “spirit of sharing,” postmen, errand boys, snow clearers and servants should receive “a box of contributions from those whom they serve.” While Boxing Day has evolved into a day for sports like football and marathon

shopping, it retains its charitable spirit. Americans don’t celebrate Boxing Day,

but we do mark tax day, and therefore, year-end charitable giving is a tradition here as well. Locally, there are many opportunities to give. Begin close to home with a gift card to CVS or a grocery store for someone you know is struggling. Support the efforts at your place of worship with the gift of time. Participate in a charity race for Life Rolls On. Ticket sales only cover about half the

cost of a production at Cape May Stage – consider their annual giving campaign. Support Cape May’s Victorian preservation efforts with a donation to MAC’s Legacy Fund. Become a member of NJ Audubon and support the Nature Center. Or visit the Nature Center’s website and check out their wish list to see how you can support this vital center for environmental education as it grows to meet the increasing demands of our community. Sometimes you can give a gift that doubles as a donation – support Cape May County’s food banks with “Have a Heart for Hunger” ornaments, available at Flying Fish for $15. And if your pet charity is pets, consider Animal Outreach. Still having trouble deciding where to give? Ask three of your Cape May friends who they support and you are sure to find a worthy recipient. Sadly, there is no shortage of need.

As American playwright Thornton Wilder said, ”Money is like manure; it’s not worth a thing unless it’s spread around encouraging young things to grow.” Don’t be full of manure – spread it around a little.

MY FRIENDS say that when living in a town as small as Cape May, a girl should always expect to run into her ex. This way, when

she sees him for the first time since being dumped, she’s sporting a fabulous new hairdo and a this-will-make-him-sorry out-fit. It helps if she’s sporting a new man on her arm as well.

It was shortly after Thanksgiving when I ran into my own ex. After four slices of leftover pumpkin pie, the only one feeling sorry was me. Instead of a sexy outfit, I wore my best I’m-so-bloated threads, and hit the Brown Room not with a piece of arm candy, but with Ted, a delinquent family friend. Ted was visiting for the holiday and since I hadn’t seen him in years, I wanted to spend some time with him. I thought we’d get to know each other over a beer, but he wanted to share his recent sexual adventures instead.

“So I get this chick home,” he said, “and she’s growling at me on all fours, you know? So I figured, if she’s going to be a tiger, I’m going to be a –”

“Why,” I interrupted, “would I want to hear this?” I shuffled us away from the bar where my boss was enjoying a cocktail. I pointed the man out to Ted, hoping this would prompt him to behave.

“Which one is he?” Ted asked, “That chump over there?” Then Ted swiped a moz-zarella stick off of a plate of appetizers that had been set up for a private party. I felt like hiding under the covers with yet another slice of pumpkin pie. But before I could tell

Ted to knock it off, he started to cry. Out of nowhere, he’d launched into a heart-to-heart about the importance of friendship.

I was so busy trying to quell Ted’s beer tears out of my boss’ earshot that it took a while to notice my ex and his new girlfriend standing just a foot away. My ex looked from me to the drunken, weepy man spilling marinara sauce beside me, and laughed.

When I pictured running into my ex, I pictured graciously sharing the kind of small talk that always seems inappropriate once you’ve seen each another naked. Or, at the very least, I thought we’d civilly ignore one another. Either way, I’d hoped to appear classy and impossibly together. Getting laughed at while stumbling through an awk-ward social situation in a pair of elastic-waist jeans is not something I’d envisioned.

So running into my ex did not go as I’d hoped. Then again, neither did our relation-ship. This less-than-ideal encounter was the appropriate footnote to a less-than-ideal romance. Now that it’s over, I can move on. But not before crawling under the covers with that last slice of pumpkin pie.

The Movie ColumnTom Sims, Executive Director of the Cape May Film Festival, reviews “Fair Game”

FAIR GAME is a historical narrative set in the not-so-distant past. In 2003, the White House leaked the identity of CIA agent Valerie Plame in an attempt

to discredit her husband Joe Wilson after he wrote a scathing New York Times piece against President Bush. Here, Plame is played by Oscar-nominated Naomi Watts and Wilson by two-time Oscar winner Sean Penn. Can you tell the buzz is starting already for Oscar time? For two free passes to the 2011 Film Festival (October 21-23), be the first to send an email to [email protected] naming one of the films for which Sean Penn won those Oscars.

Long story short (or perhaps better stated, “Story that was too long shortened”) this film was watchable (I know, not a word) and Sean Penn was excellent as always. But you don’t have to sit on any side of the aisle to get the feeling you’re seeing one side of the story. And it’s not even anything egregious in the telling of the story. You get into the characters and plot deeply enough, but some scenes are clearly politically charged and

others simply don’t ring true. All that said, it was interesting to watch, it just didn’t leave a lasting impression.

Let’s take a brief rundown of some movies in theaters that you might want to see and others you might want to put on your Netflix cue and “fuhgeddaboudit” ( yes, I looked it up — this is the most proper spelling out there). Tron Legacy, the Disney

animated gaming film is getting fair reviews; even better reviews are being tossed in the ring for The Fighter, a boxing drama starring Mark Wahlberg as a young “Irish” Mickey Ward.

The latest installment in the Chronicles of Narnia series has mixed reviews, although even its critics say it doesn’t outright suck (my word, not theirs). Same is true for The Tourist, a seemingly suspenseful cat-and-mouse game starring Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie, though critics are calling it “soulless” and asking that you check your intellect at the door.

But the final word this week is “Thanks!” The Cape May Film Festival cannot thank our supporters enough (especially those at Exit Zero) for all the help provided throughout what has turned out to be a great year! We visited more high schools than ever to show films and talk filmmaking, hosted more film camps than ever this summer, and had one of the best film festivals to date! And we now have 13,000 views on our YouTube channel (www.youtube.com/user/capemayfilm). We are truly looking forward to a fantastic 2011.

An exception to this auditory splendor is the Sedge Wren. Their bare-bones song sounds like a cricket with a stutter.

And my point is? I just love Sedge Wrens. Why? Because they are just great little birds who never get a fair shake. In the eyes of most people, even birders,

ONLY the other day, yester-day in fact, I was walking along my favorite stretch of universe when I heard the unmistakable sound of a

bird going “chap chap.”“Ahhhhh!” I said, which was the audi-

ble expression of the visceral pleasure I was experiencing. A pleasure directly related, as you might suspect, to the aforemen-tioned “chap chap.” “Chap chap,” for those of you not in the know, is a common vocal-ization of the Sedge Wren.

And a Sedge Wren, for those of you even less in the know, is a little, bitty, buff-and-taffy-colored mote of energy wrapped first in feathers and then in dense grass, reeds or (as the name implies) sedge. There are several wren species found in New Jersey. Among them the Carolina Wren, House Wren, Marsh Wren, Winter Wren...

And the Sedge Wren. The thing about the Sedge Wren is that it is much less com-mon than those other wrens. Generally harder to find. Harder to see. In fact, wrens as a rule are drab and skulking and avoid

Sedge Wrens just don’t have the pizazz that propels birds to the top of the popularity charts.

Nobody will ever put a Sedge Wren on a f lag or use it as the centerpiece of the national emblem – with arrows in one talon; an olive branch in the other.

Nobody will ever write an Ode to a Sedge Wren. Nobody will ever note (or care) whether a Sedge Wren utters, or does not utter, the fateful pronouncement “nev-ermore.”

Except in the case of a Sedge Wren, it would come out “Never, never, never, never moremoremoremoremoremoremore.”

Nobody will ever bake four and twenty Sedge Wrens in a pie. Fact is, four and twenty Sedge Wrens would hardly make enough filling for a mid-sized Pop-Tart.

And almost nobody (except for a fairly serious and accomplished birder) would even care to see a Sedge Wren. The reason they want to see one is because they’ve already seen the birds that sit on f lags,

Plans for next season are already in place. Say Goodnight Gracie will be returning to start the season. Two comedies will follow: The Understudy and Steel Magnolias. Continuing the tradition of mounting new works, we have secured the rights to do a new version of Wil-liam Mastrosimone’s The Woolgatherer. There

are plans for William Mastrosimone’s Extremi-ties to be revived on Broadway next season. Mr. Mastrosimone will be in Cape May to work with us on this new version of his hit play which gained national attention in the 1980s when it played at Circle Repertory Company in New York of which Cape May Stage’s Artistic Direc-tor Roy Steinberg was a part. We have also applied for the rights to do Red, which won the Tony Award for Best Play this season on Broad-way. Roy Steinberg will play the role of Rothko, the abstract expressionist painter. Christmas time will be more traditional next season with This Wonderful Life based on the screenplay It’s A Wonderful Life.

birds that rate an ode or two, birds that visit terminally depressed American writers, birds that make good pie fill-ing... or oven stuffing roast-ers... or hot sauce swizzle sticks over Monday Night Football.

Sedge Wrens are just plain not-everyday birds. Not here. Not without a measure of luck or skill. Once birders see all the everyday birds, they start anticipating the less-than-everyday birds.

Like the Sedge Wren. They start ascribing added

value to birds whose appeal harks to a whisper, not a shout, and whose winsome qualities take effort to appreciate.

So there I was. Walking along. Paying scant attention to the Bald Eagles f lying around. The Great Horned Owls sitting out. The Snow Geese and Black Ducks f lying all over and the dozen or so other birds that I might have studied and appre-ciated were it not for the fact that a little bird, tucked in the grass next to the road went “chap chap.”

It takes time. Not unlike learning to distinguish the qualities of a fine port which, like the Sedge Wren, is some-thing served later and after-wards. Sipped and savored.
