The Power of your Smile! “A smile costs nothing, but gives much. It enriches those who receive, without making poorer those who give. It takes but a moment, but the memory of it sometimes last forever. None is so rich or mighty that he can get along without it, and none is so poor that he can be made richer by it. A smile creates happiness in the home, fosters good will in business, and is the countersign of friendship. It brings rest to the weary, cheer to the discouraged, sunshine to the sad, and it is nature’s best antidote for trouble. Yet it cannot be bought, begged, borrowed, or stolen, for it is something that is of no value to anyone until it is given away. Some people are too tired to give you a smile. Give them one of yours, as none needs a smile so much as he who has no more to give.” About four decades ago, I was collecting short sonnets that had an important message. I filed them in an envelope labeled “Food for Thought”. I was clearing out one of my office moving boxes called “Miscellaneous Items” and was pitching items when I ran across that envelope. Now for my message. Calling all Kiwanians! Your Kiwanis Club needs you! If your club is going to grow, it needs your commitment to bringing in a new member as soon as possible. All Kiwanians should be concerned about the future, since all of us will be living there. First things first, get prepared to recruit a new member. Document some talking points about the importance of Kiwanis service in your community. Identify some of the opportunities in gaining new friendship, listening to different community leaders talking about what is happening in their area of influence. Identify some of your clubs service project successes. Keep in mind that, “People do not gravitate to what you say; they gravitate to how you feel about what you say. They follow your passion”. All Kiwanis clubs perform meaningful service work. Identify a few of them in your talking points. A talking points document is a bullet list of items that you want to guide your conversation with a new member prospect. Be aware that “People do not join clubs; people join people doing meaningful things”. Your presentation should be no longer than three to five minutes. Rehearse your presentation. Include several hooks in your presentation that makes the prospective member ask you questions. This starts the dialog process. Make a prospect list by reviewing your clubs membership composition. Once you have four to eight names you are ready to make your initial visit. Always leave the prospective member with a membership application brochure and invite them to attend one of your meetings or service project. I would like every club in the District to have net growth. Let’s make it happen. Yours in Kiwanis Service,

Bill

The Kiwanis Club of Columbia welcomed South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley to their lunch meeting on June 26, 2014. What was to be a normal club meeting turned into a terrific interclub with representatives from the Kiwanis Club of Aiken, the Kiwanis Club of Columbia Northeast, and the Columbia Golden K joining the Columbia club for an informative program by Haley. In total, the Columbia club hosted 33 fellow Kiwanians from all parts of Division 23. Following Haley’s remarks, the audience was invited to ask questions. Kiwanians took the opportunity to ask interesting questions on education, healthcare, and the economy. After a member asked a question on the topic of medical marijuana, Haley cheerfully remarked, “you guys aren’t holding back. This isn’t your normal Kiwanis Club!” Haley is the latest in a long line of governors the Kiwanis Club of Columbia has hosted. According to accounts in The State newspaper, the first governor to address the Columbia Kiwanis Club was Governor Thomas McLeod who spoke to the club on nearly ninety years ago on January 20, 1923. In addition to Governor Haley’s remarks, the Columbia Kiwanis Club took the opportunity to induct two new members into the club, Debbie Stoner and Nancy Hutto.

On their final day of the school year, the principal and teachers of North Canton Elementary School expressed their appreciation with a “Recognitition Luncheon” for the support given to them by the Waynesville Kiwanis Club and

community partners, Evergreen Corporation and Champion Credit Union. Grants provided by the Waynesville Club have financed the upgrade of the school playground equipment, dictionaries for third graders, Leapfrog Gaming Program and a firing kiln for the art class. Each year, the Club awards approximately $33,000 in grants to schools and organizations that support childrens' programs in Haywood County.

1…Step Forward to Share in Charlotte It’s time to tell our stories about the many good things that are going on in our clubs with very young children. This is one of Governor Bill’s most important goals for our Carolinas District. We have been asked to present two workshops at the district convention in Charlotte, August 22-24. Please step forward to share your story. Let me know by August 1 if you are willing to be one of the three clubs to share at one of two sessions (we need six clubs). 2…Send a Brief Description of Your Club’s First 2000 Days Initiative Also, even if you are unable to share what is going on in your club in Charlotte regarding the 2000 initiative, please send me a brief description so that we have a big picture of what we are doing district wide. I will share them in written form in Charlotte. Many thanks for all the good things you are doing for our young children. We are “making a difference” in many young lives. Thank you.
